Chapter 6: Missing
Chase and Rocky continued to cling to the log they landed on for dear life as the mudslide continued to carry them away. Though not as intense as it was earlier, it was still extremely dangerous with all of the debris getting carried away. Just minutes ago, Skye had been separated from the two of them after Rocky's unsuccessful attempt to pull her and Chase back onto more stable ground.
"Skye!" Chase continued to shout. He was so very desperate to find the cockapoo. Unfortunately all he saw was a muddy stream and the trees of the forest. He glanced up as Jake's Mountain grew further and further away. Before long it was just a tiny speck. Tears began to form in his eyes.
"Chase," Rocky said. "What are we gonna do?" However, the police pup ignored him. His eyes were still darting back and forth looking for Skye.
"Chase?" Rocky said again. Still no answer.
"CHASE!" this finally got the German shepherd's attention as he looked at Rocky. He said nothing, but Rocky knew he would be listening. "What are we going to do?"
Chase finally stopped thinking about Skye long enough to analyze his surroundings. It still looked much too dangerous to try to jump off the log and swim to the edge of this quasi-stream.
"We should probably stay put," he said finally. "It's too risky to try to jump off now."
"But Jake's Mountain is so far away now."
"Our safety is more important right now. Once we find a safe spot to leave this log, we'll head back towards Jake's and look for Skye, together."
That certainly wasn't the answer the mixed breed was hoping to hear. After having to deal with the tornado and now this in the same week, his sense were kicked into overdrive. He refused to share with anyone the fact that he had been having nightmares involving the tornado the past few days. Sighing, he slumped down on top of the log and tried to find a comfortable enough position to lie down, close his eyes and rest for a bit.
Chase also lied down on the log and tried to find a way to get some rest and recover his strength. His thoughts kept drifting off to Skye as the image of her falling from his grasp kept replaying back and forth in his mind. He wanted nothing more than to hold her in his paws. A specific memory began replaying in his mind, one that he had hoped he'd never have to go through again but would also love to experience once more. It happened the day Skye got lost on her way to Jake's, and though Chase had hoped she'd never get lost again, he certainly wouldn't mind having another one-on-one interaction like the one he had with her that night.
Chase and Ryder were pulled off to the side of the road leading up to Jake's Mountain. His drone was deployed and out scanning the area for the missing cockapoo. Everest and Ace had made their way down from the resort to aid in the search.
"There she is!" Chase said with excitement upon finding Skye with his drone. Inside, he was super relieved that his crush was found. He continued to watch through the drone's camera feed as Everest deployed her vehicle's sled attachment for Skye to ride on the trip back to Jake's. Once she and Everest started heading that way, he brought his drone back.
Chase was so eager to get to Jake's and see Skye that he was begging Ryder to get going. Ryder quickly called Marshall up to give Skye a checkup and then he and Chase took off for the resort.
After Skye's checkup and watching Ace do some nighttime trick flying, the pups headed back inside. Ryder suggested that Skye spend the night there and Chase immediately volunteered to stay and keep watch over her. Although hesitant at first, Ryder agreed, as without Chase, Skye still may have been lost in the woods.
Chase and Skye were in the spare bedroom at Jake's lodge. Skye was lying on the bed doing her best to find a comfortable sleeping position in spite of her sore paw. Chase hopped up and sat down near her.
"How are you doing Skye?" he asked.
"Much better now that I've had some food and have warmed up a bit, but it's still pretty cold in here," she said with a shiver.
"Would you like me to go get you another blanket?"
"If you wouldn't mind," she said with a smile.
Chase dashed off to the living room and returned soon after with a rather large blanket.
"Whoa, Chase, I don't need a blanket that big," she chuckled.
"Oh, uh," Chase said, doing his best to hide his blush. "Just in case I get cold, I thought we could share it since it's super big."
"Okay!" she said, trying to hide her wagging tail.
In the middle of the night, Skye woke suddenly, having a terrible nightmare about her getting lost in the snowstorm again. This woke Chase too, as the German shepherd was a relatively light sleeper which helped him with staying alert for anything that could go awry.
"What is it Skye?" he asked with concern. He sat up and turned on the lamp on the night stand and examined the cockapoo next to him. She was shivering and he swore he saw that she was sweating and maybe even crying, if the tear stains on her face were any indication.
"I think it was just a bad dream," she said. She couldn't bear to look him in the eyes since she was full of embarrassment.
"It certainly didn't sound like it," Chase replied.
"I just dreamt that I got lost again but this time no one was able to find me," she finally replied, lowering her head.
"Don't worry, Skye," he said, moving closer to her. "That's never gonna happen again." He placed a paw on her shoulder and she instinctively moved in for a hug, which Chase gladly accepted.
"You promise?" she whispered.
"I promise," said Chase.
Chase bolted awake. He took a second to look at his surroundings. "Where are we?"
"I have no clue," said Rocky, who, after examining himself and seeing all the dirt and mud in his fur, began to shake himself off. "Looks like I might need a bath when we get back," he said not so enthusiastically.
"We should have never closed our eyes," said Chase. "Now we have no idea which way takes us back towards Adventure Bay."
"I wouldn't say that," Rocky said. "We can follow the sun since it sets behind the Lookout. We'll just have to travel west."
"Wow Rocky, how did you know that?" Chase asked, amazed at the mixed breed's intelligence.
"When you do enough reading, you pick up on a thing or two," Rocky answered, doing his best to be modest about his intelligence. It certainly wasn't a secret that he was far and away the smartest of Ryder's pups. The argument could be made that Skye was the next smartest, but her book smarts were nowhere near the level of Rocky's.
The two pups looked towards the sky and noticed that the sun was directly overhead.
"Looks like we'll have to wait for a little bit before we set off," Rocky said.
"And it seems that it's been over a day since we last saw Ryder," Chase said. He could still see the image of his owner shook still, on his knees, and crying as he, Rocky and Skye were taken away by the mudslide.
The two pups ambled over to a nearby tree and lied down. That's when Rocky noticed something in the grass. He walked over to the mysterious item and gasped upon seeing what it was.
"Chase, come here!" he called over to the German shepherd.
"What is it?" Chase asked as he jogged over, but his eyes widened upon seeing what Rocky had found. There, in the grass, was Skye's pup tag. The PAW Patrol symbol was cracked and there were a couple wires hanging out. Chase immediately grabbed it and held it close. "She's gotta be nearby."
"We don't know that for sure," Rocky said. "The mudslide took her in a different direction than us. For all we know her collar came off and got washed away with the two of us." He didn't want to hurt the police pup, but he certainly had to be realistic with him. This didn't stop Chase from shouting her name to see if she was in fact nearby. He kept this up for about five minutes, with no success.
Eventually, Chase stopped shouting Skye's name and walked back over to the tree they were resting under. He cradled Skye's pup tag and whimpered, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. Rocky came over and placed a paw on his shoulder.
"Can you keep a secret?" Chase asked, not looking up from Skye's pup tag.
"What is it?"
"I have a crush on Skye," Chase said, his face turning a bit red from embarrassment. This was the first time he admitted his feelings for the cockapoo to anyone.
Rocky wanted to respond with "I know," but he felt that Chase needed love and support so he instead said, "Really? That's adorable!"
Chase turned to him. "You think so?"
"Yeah," Rocky said. "Maybe you should tell her once we find her." Rocky realized, and even hoped, that this was the 'something bigger' Zuma was referring to that would get Chase to confess his feelings to Skye.
"Oh, I don't know about that," Chase said. "Maybe she doesn't feel the same way."
"And maybe she does," Rocky answered. "You'll never know unless you tell her." Rocky then decided to lie down and rest a bit more before the long journey back to Adventure Bay.
Chase, thinking about what the mixed breed had just told him, also lied down, still holding Skye's pup tag between his paws.
Ryder stormed into Rubble's room at the Foggy Bottom hospital. If he was to reconvene with all of his remaining pups, this was the best spot since they were all there. Jake and Everest tagged along for the trip, ready to lend a hand, or a paw in Everest's case.
"Ryder!" Marshall yelled, running over to his owner. "Where's Chase?"
"I don't know," Ryder said. "He and Rocky and Skye were all taken away by the mudslide.
"Then we have to go find them!" Marshall said, running towards the exit.
"Marshall wait!" Ryder said, but his words were empty to the dalmatian. All he wanted to do was to find his best friend, no, brother, before something bad happened to him. He hopped into his firetruck and sped off towards Jake's Mountain.
"We should go after him," Jake said.
"Everest, can you go stop him before he gets too far?"
"Sure thing, Ryder." Everest took off out the door and followed the dalmatian.
"What are we going to do, Ryder?" Zuma asked.
"We're going to have to follow the path of the mudslide and look for them," Ryder said. "Who knows how far it took them or even where it took them, but we'll have to start right away before…" he was suddenly interrupted by his pup pad.
"Hello, Ryder here," he answered. It was Farmer Al.
"Ryder, I need your help. Cornelius fell into the river and needs help!"
Ryder tried his best to hide his irritation. After a couple seconds he said, "Don't worry Farmer Al, we'll be there soon."
"Thanks Ryder."
After Ryder hung up, he looked at Zuma and Rubble. "Zuma, we have to go help Farmer Al save Cornelius."
"But Ryder," the chocolate lab said. "What about Rocky and Chase and Skye?"
"We'll have to help Al first, then we'll immediately head off to find them."
"Okay," Zuma tried hiding his disappointment, but Ryder could tell he was upset. Not that he blamed him or anything, he wanted nothing more than to find his pups too. He called Marshall and told him he was needed to make sure Cornelius was okay. The dalmatian reluctantly agreed.
"What about me, Ryder?" said Rubble.
Ryder sat down next to the bulldog and gave him an apologetic smile. "Unfortunately you're still required to stay here for another two days."
"Aww," Rubble replied with a whimper.
"Don't worry dude," Zuma said. "We'll find them and bring them home." This was enough to at least get a smile out of the bulldog before Jake, Ryder and Zuma left the hospital. With nothing else left to do, Rubble turned on the TV to continue rewatching Apollo the Super Pup.
Skye had just arrived back at Jake's chalet after being found by Chase's drone. After a quick checkup from Marshall and some time outside watching some trick flying from Ace, she and her rescuers went back inside. Ryder had just told her that she would be staying at Jake's for the night. When Chase volunteered to keep her company, she swore her heart skipped a beat.
She was sitting in the bed in the guest room at the chalet, wrapped in a blanket. Soon there was a knock at the door and Chase walked in, having removed his super spy uniform.
"Oh, uh," Chase said, "just in case I get cold, I thought we could share it since it's super big."
"Okay!" she said, trying to hide her wagging tail. He was so sweet, and she was so glad that he was the one who technically found her.
She was shivering and sweating and maybe even crying, if the tear stains on her face were any indication.
"I think it was just a bad dream," she said. She couldn't bear to look him in the eyes since she was full of embarrassment.

"I just dreamt that I got lost again but this time no one was able to find me," she finally replied, lowering her head.
"Don't worry, Skye," he said, moving closer to her. "That's never gonna happen again." He placed a paw on her shoulder and she instinctively moved in for a hug, which Chase reciprocated.
"You promise?" she whispered.
"I promise," said Chase.
Skye awoke with a jolt. After realizing she had just woken up from a dream, she frowned at the fact that Chase was unable to keep his promise. That's not to say that she was mad at him. Unforeseen circumstances caused them to be separated and her to be by herself…without her wings…and without her pup tag to call anyone or even be tracked by its GPS.
She got up, stretched her legs, and that's when she felt the pain. Her back right leg was achy and she noticed a small bruise when she looked back at it. Must have injured it during the mudslide, she thought. She whimpered once she remembered that very mudslide separated her from her owner, her friends, her crush. She wanted nothing more than to be back at the Lookout with the rest of the pups.
Skye gazed at her surroundings. Nothing but grass and trees in all directions. I wonder how far from home I am.
As Skye began walking in the direction she believed would take her home, she noticed something in the grass nearby. She walked over to it and gasped upon seeing what it was. It was Chase's pup tag, or whatever was left of it. The communicator was smashed and a couple wires were showing, but it gave her hope that Chase was nearby.
"CHASE!" she shouted as loud as her puppy lungs would allow her. No answer. Again, she shouted his name, again, no response. After about five minutes of this, she was forced to accept that he wasn't nearby. She cradled his pup tag in her paws and whimpered. She had been in this sort of spot before: alone, needing to be rescued, scared. With nothing else to lose, she took Chase's collar and pup tag, put it on around her neck, and continued on in the direction she was heading. However, she failed to notice a pair of eyes watching her from the shadows.
"Thanks for coming, Ryder and Zuma!" Farmer Al said, greeting the two as they arrived at his barn. "Let me show you where Cornelius." The two followed him down to the river where they did in fact see Cornelius. The poor hog was stuck clinging to a branch.
"Zuma, go get your hovercraft and bring it to the edge here. We can launch your buoy for him," Ryder said.
"Let's dive in," the water pup said before going to get his hovercraft. That's when they heard the sound of a familiar siren. Farmer Al and Ryder turned around to see Marshall pulling up with his ambulance. Ryder smiled, knowing that this was probably the last thing the dalmatian wanted to be doing right now.
"Thanks for coming Marshall," the boy said with a smile. "Zuma's going to bring his hovercraft over. Can you launch his buoy to Cornelius while he jumps in to help put it on him?"
"Sure thing Ryder," Marshall said.
"Once he's looked at, we will go find our missing pups."
"Hold on a second," Farmer Al interrupted. "You said you have missing pups?"
Ryder and Marshall turned to the farmer, the latter looking down at the ground.
"Chase, Rocky and Skye got caught in a mudslide," Ryder finally said. "It happened up near Jake's lodge earlier today. We're going to look for them as soon as we're done here."
"I'm so sorry," Farmer Al said, sympathizing with the PAW Patrol's current predicament. "I really hope you find them."
"Thanks," Marshall said with a sad smile. Just then, Zuma returned with his hovercraft.
"Okay Marshall, hop in and launch the buoy. Zuma, get ready to jump in," Ryder instructed.
Farmer Al watched as Marshall launched Zuma's buoy into the river. The chocolate lab then jumped in the river, activating his scuba gear, and grabbed hold of the buoy.
Five minutes later and Cornelius was on dry ground, safe and sound. Marshall gave him a once over and found no injuries.
"Thanks for all your help," Farmer Al said. "Good luck finding your pups!" He bid them farewell as Ryder, Zuma and Marshall took off.
"Okay pups," Ryder said. "Let's head to Jake's and look for the rest of our team. No job is too big, no pup is too small!" Zuma and Marshall howled with excitement as they drove up to Jake's.
