Upon coming to her senses from the magic spell Rosalina cast on her, Calla or rather Lady Emeraldblade as she had entitled herself with, had found herself in a small town somewhere out in the desert, presumably somewhere in the Southwestern part of America like Rosalina had told her.
She began looking around town to figure out to where exactly she was, given that this was the first time she had set foot on her home planet in a long time. As she walked, various clues began to appear in front of her: various signage and insignias related to UFOs, Aliens, and the Supernatural. There were even attractions dedicated to this type of phenomena, such as a theater and a museum.
And then it hit her: aliens, UFOs, etc., all the clues pointed to one location that fit the criteria: Roswell, New Mexico. Lady Emeraldblade was very familiar with the town, given its notoriety when an alleged flying saucer crashed into the barren fields outside the town many decades earlier, causing a huge craze in extra-terrestrial life to that very day, but she had never seen it in-person.
Lady Emeraldblade then decided to ask around for any information about the strange glow her adoptive mother told her about before she left. She managed to find a visitor center in the town and felt that was the first place to look. She walked up to the front desk and asked the person who was attending it.
"Excuse me," she spoke up to catch the woman's attention.
"Can I help you with something ma'am?"
"Yes, I was wondering, has anyone been seeing a strange glow in this area lately?"
The woman just looked at her with confusion, thinking that she was just someone trying to start a surge of interest in UFOs. "Oh, I get it, this being Roswell and all, you think perhaps that there's aliens lurking around."
"Ugh-" Emeraldblade tried to explain.
"Well in all seriousness, I'm afraid I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary lately, but if you are interested, you can check out one of the brochures to the sites and activities available around here."
Emeraldblade nodded in disappointment, but nonetheless didn't let the issue sidetrack her.
For the rest of the day, Emeraldblade continued searching around the town for clues about the glow, she checked the museums and attractions lining the streets, but came up short of any leads. Eventually, the sun began to set over the horizon, and she decided to call off searching for the day and find a place to stay for the night before continuing her search the next morning. As she was walking to find a hotel to rest in for the night, she heard a man's voice shouting from behind her.
"Go, go, go charge!" the unknown individual demanded, "We need to deliver this care package pronto!"
The man was wearing a red overcoat with a matching soldier's helmet which completely obscured his eyes, strangely it didn't hinder his vision one bit. He paired the outfit with a pair of grey trousers, brown airman's boots, a bandolier that held what appeared to be two grenades, and a belt with two satchels attached to the sides.
Behind him was another man with dark skin and a handlebar mustache. There appeared to be an eyepatch covering one of his eyes. He wore a black cap on his head, a red coverall shirt with white sleeves under a brownish-black brigandine, a pair of red pants and black boots. This man in particular looked like he was carrying some sort of large package.
The two men were approaching Emeraldblade rapidly, before suddenly the first man bumped into her, causing both of them to lose their footing.
"Hey, watch where you're going hippie!" the man angrily scolded her. "Can't you see we are in a hurry?!"
Emeraldblade was offended by the man's hostile demeanor but nonetheless attempted to deescalate the confrontation.
"Look, I'm not trying to cause trouble, but-"
"Are you trying to interfere with official ex-Mann Co. business girl?!" the man questioned her, "Because I will not tolerate backtalk from anyone, especially hippies!"
"Wait, I think this is all a misunderstanding, if you could just let me-"
"That's it maggot, for that you will be getting a major ass-whooping… from me!" he responded.
The man suddenly pulled out what appeared to be a rocket launcher, Emeraldblade's eyes lit up with fear as she quickly drew her sword from its holster on her back.
"Screaming Eagles!" the man shouted, as he fired a volley of rocket shells from his weapon, Emeraldblade was startled before quickly ducking out of the way to avoid getting herself killed by the explosive projectile, causing the rockets aimlessly flew off into the horizon.
She then responded by trying to charge at the soldier with a counterattack, but the man dodged her attack by…rocket-jumping?! Yes, it appeared that the man had used his rocket launcher to fire a rocket at his feet to launch himself into the air, he then responded by pulling out a shovel and attempted to melee her with a falling strike. Emeraldblade attempted to block the attack with her sword, but the force of his weight gave in and broke her guard.
"Get a haircut hippie!" the man taunted her arrogantly.
Emeraldblade stood up, not wanting to let this man best her in combat. She then attempted to swipe at him with various swings of her sword. The man managed to block several of her strikes of her sword, before a low strike managed to catch him off-guard and knock him to his feet, he then jumped to regain his footing rather quickly before Emeraldblade managed to swipe at him again, launching him several yards away.
Emeraldblade dashed in his direction as he took out yet another weapon, this time a pump-action shotgun and began firing numerous rounds at the female warrior. She managed to prevent herself from being hit by blocking the pellets with her sword. She then attempted to strike him with a powerful slash, only for him to pull out his rocket launcher once more and rocket jump into the air in the opposite direction, this time instead of striking her with his shovel, the soldier fired three rockets in her direction. She quickly leapt out of the way, narrowing dodging the explosions that followed.
"You got guts girl," the man seemingly "complimented" her, "But my rockets will still beat your swordsmanship in the end."
Emeraldblade stood up and noticed the man reloading his rocket launcher, she took the opportunity to strike him while he was vulnerable. She once again dashed into his direction, but just as it seemed as though she was about to land a successful hit on him, he pulled out his shovel and knocked her back aways. Just as she regained her footing, the man shouted out something that made her heart stop.
"Time to inform your next of kin!" he shouted.
Suddenly he fired yet another rocket in her direction. Emeraldblade couldn't react quick enough as the rocket flew quickly in her direction. All she could do was close her eyes, hoping for some sort of miracle to potentially cheat death. Just then, she felt her hands thrust her sword forward, causing it to block the rocket from hitting her directly, the sudden movement caused the rocket to collide with her sword, resulting in an explosion that made her ears ring afterwards. Once the ringing stopped, Emeraldblade found herself unharmed from the explosion as her sword began glowing brightly.
"Holy Mary, mother of Joseph!" the man reacted in shock.
As her sword continued to glow, Emeraldblade felt her body resonating with energy as she dashed forward to strike the soldier. The man tried to block the strikes with his weapon, but the force of the strikes managed to penetrate through his guard, causing him to lose his footing, he then got up and took a crouching position as he used his rocket launcher to rocket jump once more. When he landed, he tried to fire another volley of rockets at the warrior, only for his weapon to make a harmless clicking noise; he was out of ammo."
"Dauggh, no!" he exclaimed, clearly upset by the sudden turn of events.
Emeraldblade once again sprinted in his direction, before delivering a powerful drop kick that connected with his torso, causing the man to cringe in pain. The man responded by drawing his shotgun once more, but before he could fire it, Emeraldblade swung her sword, knocking it out of his hands. He then resorted to using his remaining weapon by pulling out his shovel in an attempt to counter her, but Emeraldblade had quicker reflexes and managed prevent that from happening by forcing him to block each of her strikes. Eventually, Emeraldblade responded by launching the man with an upwards strike, sending him flying as he let out a loud scream, as he was about to hit the ground, Emeraldblade finished him off by thrusting her sword forward in a piercing motion, knocking him face first to the ground. The man groaned in agony, clearly incapacitated from the battle.
"Ow, my back!" He groaned.
"Listen, I didn't want to fight you, but your actions left me with no choice," Emeraldblade explained "Now could you please explain to me what's going on?"
Suddenly, Emeraldblade heard someone screaming behind her, as she noticed the second man trying to charge at her with a sword by means of a counterattack. Seeing the man approach her very quickly, her only option was to instinctively leap out of the way.
"You've really made me cross now lassie!" the second man shouted angrily at her with what sounded like a Scottish accent.
"Please I don't want any trouble, if you could just hear me out-"
"You try to reason with me girly and I'll shove that sword of yours up your arse!" he interrupted, "LET'S DO IT!"
Suddenly, the man leapt at Emeraldblade and swung his sword in a downward motion, but she managed to shift back several yards behind her to avoid being sliced in half. As the man regained his composure, Emeraldblade countered with a piercing motion in an attempt to knock him back. The attack worked, but man almost instantly recovered by performing a backflip. He then switched out his sword with a grenade launcher and began firing grenade rounds at her.
The second man wasn't as good of an aim as his friend with the rocket launcher, but nonetheless Emeraldblade didn't take any chances and dodged the shots by any means necessary. She managed to dodge every single one by the time she was within striking distance of the man, but just as she was about to hit him, a stray round that had fallen behind her suddenly detonated, launching her forward into the man by accident.
"Huh, wha-?" The man wondered, "That wasn't supposed to happen!"
As she was regaining her footing, Emeraldblade took advantage of the man's distracted state and swung her sword forward, launching him several feet away. After flinching to the pain, the man got up and took out…by all things, a bottle of alcohol.
"Aye, me bottle o' scrumpy!" he said, before taking a swig of the beverage.
After finishing the drink, he threw out the bottle, causing it to shatter on a nearby wall, before brandishing his sword once more. He then lunged at Lady Emeraldblade with great force. She managed to block each attack the man launched at her, before he suddenly kicking her a distance away. After briefly reeling from the unexpected attack, Emeraldblade dashed back into his direction and countered with a backhand in the opposite direction that the man swung at her with his sword, the attack stunned the man when it connected with his face, while a second attack caused by a low swing from Emeraldblade's sword knocked him to his feet. However, just as Emeraldblade was about to defeat him, the man swung his sword with a counterattack, forcing her to evade by jumping back, as she watched as the man regained his footing once more.
"Enough of this," he demanded, "Time to get bluttered!"
Suddenly, he made yet another powerful charge in her direction, but just as he was about to seemingly strike her with a fatal blow, Emeraldblade's sword once more took on a life of its own and absorbed the full blow of the man's attack, causing him to stagger back in shock.
"What magic is this?" he responded, clearly confused as to what just happened.
Once again, Emeraldblade felt her body pulsating with energy, causing her to dash forward to strike the man with several blows of her own. The man initially blocked each incoming attack, but eventually the fury of Emeraldblade's swings soon overpowered him, breaking his guard before launching him back first onto the ground quite a distance away.
"Oh I feel like every bone in me body's broke!" he groan in pain, clearly defeated.
Emeraldblade turn back to where the first man lied, and found him sitting up, she walked over and began speaking to him again.
"Are you okay?" she asked, clearly concerned for his well-being.
"Stay away from me hippie, and keep that manner of magic away!" he shouted.
Emeraldblade then realized what he was talking about, but was unclear how exactly she was able to perform all those powerful attacks.
"Listen, I don't know who you are, but I think we got off on the wrong foot," she explained to the man, "My name is Lady Emeraldblade, who exactly are you?"
"That's not important right now, the bigger question I'm wondering is are you some sort of assassin sent by Merasmus to eliminate us?" he angrily demanded, "Because with all that magic and voodoo and what-not, you seem to act a lot like him."
Emeraldblade was confused, "Wait, who's Merasmus?"
"Don't try to play dumb with me maggot!" he replied, "I'm certain you know a lot about the evil sorcerer by now!"
And then it hit her.
"Evil sorcerer…that sounds like one of the minions Rosalina mentioned to me earlier who is working for Nightmare."
"Rosalina? Nightmare? Who are you talking about maggot?"
"Will you stop calling me that?!" Emeraldblade responded, before calming down, "Listen, I'll tell you everything that's going on if you agree to tell me who Merasmus is."
The Soldier thought about the offer for a moment, before suddenly hearing police sirens approaching the vicinity the three of them were in.
"Alright fine, but we need to get out of here immediately." he agreed.
Emeraldblade nodded before running back to Demoman to help him back up on his feet.
"Thanks mate, whoever you are."
"Call me Lady Emeraldblade."
"Alright lassie, let's get out of here!"
Emeraldblade and Demoman followed Soldier as he led them to a run-down van located behind an alleyway, the van was white and had the slogan "Red Bread" painted on each side.
As they boarded the vehicle, they came across a third man in the driver's seat. This man was tall and slender, and wore a brown safari hat on his head with a pair of black-rimmed glasses with dark-tinted lens. He wore a red shirt with a black vest paired with khaki pants and brown boots. He also wore a single glove on his left hand with a watch around his wrist, as well as a brown quiver on his back. The man was initially glad to see both the Soldier and the Demoman in one piece, but when they noticed that they brought a third person along, he became upset.
"Soldier, who the bloody hell is this lass?" he demanded.
"I'll explain it when we get back to the bunker," He explained, "But right now we need to get out of this place before the cops find us, now drive this van!"
Sniper nodded, and once everyone was on board, he shifted the van into reverse and backed it out of the alley away from the main road to avoid drawing suspicion, he then shifted the vehicle to drive and floored the gas pedal, causing the van to accelerate away from the town as they left Roswell behind. After they were a safe distance from the city, Sniper calmed down before asking about something that was still on his mind.
"By the way mates, did you get the care package?"
Demoman then popped his head out from cabin, before showing him a strange green box made of nylon.
"Aye." He said, causing the two mercs to smile.
