Chapter 5: The Truth
Lana's POV:
I woke up to the sound of the gong, signaling that it was time to start the day. I sat up and stretched then I quickly got dressed. For my clothes, I picked out my team RWBY shirt from my favorite anime, RWBY, and my RWBY Blake streetwear leggings. I am a big fan of RWBY. I have been since I was a kid. I heard about the show from my friends in the village.
After I got dressed and brushed my hair, I had a quick snack before meeting Master Shifu outside along with the rest of the Five.
"Good morning, Master!" We all said. Everyone was here except for Po.
"Panda! Panda!" Shifu shouted. Shifu went to his room and opened the doors. "Wake up!"
I looked around the room to find Po missing. Where was he? Shifu smirked when he found Po's absence. "He Quit," Shifu said happily.
"I'm still here." I piped up.
"Not for long," Shifu said sharply. My face fell with disappointment. I looked at the Five but they didn't offer me any support. Well, Viper did exchange a sympathetic glance towards me. We walked up the stairs to the courtyard where the Five were discussing what to do without Po. I felt some anger boiling in my body. How could my dad leave me like that? After he promised me he would help me? Some father he is!
"What will we do now, Master, with the Panda gone? Who will be the Dragon Warrior?" Viper asked.
"Well, we still have Lana to deal with. All we can do is resume our training and trust that in time, the true Dragon Warrior will be revealed." Shifu said. My heart sank when Shifu said those words. Why does he not see me as the Dragon Warrior?
"But Shifu, I am-" I started, but Shifu cut me off sharply.
"No! Since the panda has gone back home, you will go back home too." Shifu said firmly. I said nothing else, knowing that there was no way I could convince him. When Shifu opened the doors, my eyes widened in shock. There was Po, in the middle of the courtyard, doing a split on some logs.
"What are you doing here?!" Shifu yelled angrily.
"Dad? I thought you left!" I shouted.
"Hi! Good morning, Master! Yes, I'm still here Lana. I thought I'd warm up a little bit." Po said. Po grunted. He continued to do his stretches, but he struggled to move.
"You're stuck," Shifu said.
"Stuck? Nah." Po said. Po attempted to get out of the logs. "What? Stuck? Nah. This is one of my... Yeah, I'm stuck."
"Help him," Shifu said. Po seemed embarrassed.
"Oh, dear," Crane said. Crane grabbed Po by the pants and pulled him up while flapping his wings.
"Maybe on three, one, two..." Po started as Crane began lifting him up. Po catches his breath when Crane manages to get Po back on the ground. "...three. Thank you."
"Don't mention it," Crane said.
"No, I really, I appreciate..." Po said.
"Ever," Crane interrupted him.
"You actually thought you could learn to do a full split in one night? It takes years to develop one's flexibility! And years longer to apply it in combat!" Shifu shouted. Shifu threw up two boards in the air. Tigress jumped up after the boards and did a full split while breaking the boards with her feet.
"Wow," I whispered to myself. I still admired the Furious Five even though they didn't like me and Po. Maybe in time, they will warm up to us. Po watched with amazement when Tigress landed on the ground. The debris landed on top of us. One of the broken pieces landed on Po's head. I sneakily grabbed a piece but Shifu noticed before I could hide it.
"Put that down! The only souvenirs we collect here are bloody knuckles and broken bones!" Shifu yelled. My heart pounded as Shifu yelled at me. I wasn't used to being yelled at. My dad's never really yelled at me. For some reason, this seemed to amuse Po.
"Yeah!" Po shouted in between chuckles. "Excellent!"
"Let's get started," Shifu said.
"But I thought you didn't want me here?" I said, confused.
"Since your dad stayed then I guess you're training with us too," Shifu said.
"Yay!" I said, excitedly.
"But don't expect me to go easy on you," Shifu said. Shifu snapped his fingers at the Five. They gathered around him. Po and I got into our fighting stance.
"Are you ready?" Viper asked us as she readied herself.
"I was born re..." Po was interrupted when Viper repeatedly hit Po with the end of her tail.
"Ow!" Po cried, being thrown into the air. Without a warning, Viper wrapped her tail around my wrist and threw me into the wall. I landed hard on my back.
"Damn, that hurt!" I whined, rubbing my head.
"I'm sorry guys, I thought you said you were ready," Viper said.
"That was awesome! Let's go again!" Po said excitedly. Shifu snapped his fingers again. This time it was Monkey's turn. Po and I grabbed some poles. Monkey prepared himself. Monkey twirled his pole around and managed to hit Po. I tried to attack Monkey, but Monkey was able to hit me too. Po blocked one of Monkey's moves, but he was hit in the head. Next, it was Crane's turn.
It was hard to keep balance on the balancing bowl. Po fell inside before Crane could take a hit at us. I attempted to take a hit at Crane but I fell inside too. I thought Mantis was gonna be easy to beat, but I was wrong. Mantis did not go easy on us. Mantis kept crawling on us, hitting us over and over again. The training continued until sundown. Po chuckled. I didn't think this was funny. My body was really sore. I was even bleeding in some places. Sweat dripped down my body as I was exhausted.
"I've been taking it easy on the both of you. But no more. Your next opponent will be me." Shifu said.
"Oh no," I muttered.
For some reason, Po seemed hyped up. "All right! Yeah, let's go!" Po shouted. The Five exchanged nervous glances at one another.
"Step forth," Shifu ordered. I reluctantly stepped forward. Shifu begins spinning us while lecturing us at the same time.
"The true path to victory is to find your opponent's weakness... and make him suffer for it," Shifu said. Shifu slammed us to the ground. Shifu grabbed Po by the nose.
"Oh, yeah!" Po shouted. Shifu slammed Po on the ground again.
"To take his strength and use it against him... until he finally falls..." Shifu said. Shifu kept kicking Po until he pinned him to the ground. "Or quits," Shifu added.
"But a real warrior never quits. Don't worry, Master, I will never quit." Po said. Shifu twirled Po around again. Shifu kicked Po hard in the stomach, causing Po to go flying over the door, plummeting towards the stairs.
"Dad!" I cried. Po screamed as he landed hard on his head. Po fell all the way down the thousands of stairs. The Five and I watched Po's painful descent.
"If he's smart, he won't come back up those steps," Tigress said.
"But he will," Monkey said.
"He's not going to quit, is he?" Viper said.
"He's not going to quit bouncing, I'll tell you that," Mantis said. Mantis laughed at his joke. Viper hissed at him angrily.
"What about me?" I asked, nervously.
"You will go home," Tigress said firmly. My face fell with sadness.
"I think we should let her stay if Po does come back up the steps," Viper said. I sighed. I decided to go down the stairs to check on Po. As I figured, Po was in a lot of pain. I helped Po back up the stairs and into the Jade Palace. When Po and I got inside his room, Mantis and Viper started doing acupuncture therapy on Po but all it did was make him in more pain.
"I thought you said acupuncture would make me feel better," Po said.
"Trust me, it will. It's just not easy. Finding the right nerve points under all this..." Mantis said as he was poking Po with small needles.
"Fat?" Po said.
"Fur. I was going to say fur." Mantis said quickly.
"Sure you were," Po said while rolling his eyes.
"Who am I to judge a warrior based on his size? I mean, look at me." Mantis said. Po turned to look at Mantis but he didn't see him.
"I'm over here," Mantis said. Po yelped when Mantis poked him again.
"Maybe you should look at this again," Viper said, holding up the sign.
"Oh, okay," Mantis said.
"I don't think it's going to work," I said.
"We're working on it," Mantis said.
"I know Master Shifu is trying to inspire me and all... but if I didn't know any better..." Po said. Po laughed nervously.
"It almost seems like Shifu hates me. And Tigress hates me the most too." I said sadly. I felt a few tears in my eyes.
"I know he can seem kind of heartless... but he wasn't always like that. And Tigress doesn't hate you, Lana. Tigress is trying to protect you." Mantis said. My eyes widened. She was protecting me?
"From what?" I asked.
"According to the legend, there was once a time when Master Shifu actually used to smile," Viper said.
"No!" Po said.
"Yes," Mantis said.
"But that wasn't before," Viper said.
"Before what?" Po asked. Suddenly, Tigress walked through the doors which startled me a bit.
"Before Tai Lung," Tigress said.
"We're really not supposed to talk about him," Crane said from the other room.
"Well, if they are both going to stay here, they should know," Tigress said. My curiosity grew. I knew a bit about Tai Lung because my dad told me some stories about him. But I was eager to know more.
"Guys, guys, I know about Tai Lung. He was a student. The first ever to master the thousand scrolls of kung fu. And then he turned bad, and now he's in jail." Po said nervously.
"He wasn't just a student," Tigress said. I listened closer as Tigress began telling the story of Tai Lung. "Shifu found him as a cub... and when the boy showed talent in kung fu... Shifu trained him. He believed in him. He told him he was destined for greatness. It was never enough for Tai Lung. He wanted the Dragon Scroll. But Oogway saw darkness in his heart and refused. Outrage, Tai Lung laid waste to the valley. He tried to take the scroll by force. And Shifu had to destroy what he had created. But how could he?
"Shifu loved Tai Lung like he had never loved anyone before. Or since. And now he has a chance to make things right. To train the true Dragon Warrior. And he is stuck with the two of you. A big fat panda who treats it like it's a joke." Tigress said. Tigress got angry when Po made a weird face.
"Oh, that is it!" Tigress yelled as she raised her paw to slap him.
"No, wait! It was my fault!" Mantis shouted, trying to stop her. Po fell and landed on his stomach. I cringed when I saw lots of needles poking through his back.
"I accidentally tweaked his facial nerve. And may have also stopped his heart. Sorry, Lana." Mantis said. I just covered my face with my hand.
"Lana. We need to talk." Tigress said firmly, surprising me.
"O-Okay," I said, nervously. I followed Tigress to her room. When we got to her room, I sat down next to her. I looked at Tigress. I can tell she is worried.
"Lana. Were you listening to me when I told you about Tai Lung?" Tigress asked me, her tone was serious.
"Yes," I said.
"There is more to that story. It involves you." Tigress said.
"Me? What does it have to do with me?" I asked.
"Shifu found you sometime after he found Tai Lung. Shifu raised you as a baby. When you were little, Tai Lung attacked you when he was refused the Dragon Scroll because Oogway had always said you were the rightful Dragon Warrior. This made Tai Lung furious. After Tai Lung was arrested, Shifu was worried about you and your safety. So he gave you to Mr. Ping. That's when Mr. Ping and Po adopted you." Tigress explained.
"How do you know all of this?" I asked.
"Because Shifu raised me too," Tigress said.
"So does that mean... You, me, and Tai Lung are siblings. And Shifu is my father too?" I said. My heart was pounding.
"Yes," Tigress said.
"But why didn't he tell me this when we first met?" I asked.
"Because he was trying to protect you. And Lana. I am not being mean to you. And I don't hate you. I'm just protecting you too. I don't want Tai Lung to hurt you again." Tigress said.
"But he is in jail now, isn't he?" I said nervously.
"He is. But Shifu said he fears he may escape soon. And when he does then he will get revenge on you and everyone else." Tigress said. My mind raced with fear. Tai Lung sounds scary. Tigress put her hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry, Lana. If he does escape, I will protect you." Tigress said. Tigress then did something that surprised me. Tigress pulled me into a hug.
"Thanks, Tigress," I said. When Tigress walked away, my mind raced with thoughts. This new information was a lot to process. I can't believe Tigress is my sister. But Tai Lung is my brother too... If Tai Lung came back, I would be in danger because I would be Tai Lung's main target.
