With Courage I Will Face

Arc II: Pewter

Chapter Ten: Welcome to Cerulean City

While Ash was safely escorted out of Mt. Moon to the Route 4 exit, Miguel climbed their way out of a narrow tunnel towards the Route 3 exit. There was just enough room in the tunnel for them and the backpack they carried, proud to have outsmarted the teen in the cavern.

"One fossil is better than two after all." Miguel found themselves muttering as they pulled themselves above ground.

Their lab coat was full of dust and scrapes now, and their glasses had collected enough that they needed to be wiped off. They began using their undershirt for that, as the lab coat would've made it worse. They were startled to hear another voice speak to them.

"That depends on what happened to the second one, you know." Jessie commented. Miguel put their glasses back on to scowl at Jessie, James and Meowth who were assembling parts of a hot air balloon. They hesitated at a response.

"I lost it." Miguel told them. "In a battle. I had to give it to him, or he wouldn't leave me alone."

Jessie and James exchanged a look and immediately stopped what they were doing to round on Miguel.

"The boy with the Pikachu?" Jessie asked slyly. Her smile said she already knew the answer. Miguel nodded.

"That won't go over well with the boss, you know. That you handed over part of the haul to someone who marched in determined to put an end to Team Rocket's operation." James told them. "It'll make you look like a push over."

"But I still have one! A fossil! I didn't give him everything. I kept one for the boss, see?" Miguel fished another fossil out of their backpack. Jessie and James both made a show of rolling their eyes.

"Please, you think the boss won't ask where the rest of your share is?" James asked, shaking his head.

"The… the rest?" Miguel asked, hesitantly. They both nodded in unison.

"One fossil isn't enough to stay on his good side, you know. Every other Rocket has leaps and bounds more to offer than that. I think Archer even has a fossil too, so you can bet the boss isn't gonna care about yours." Jessie flippantly.

"Especially knowing that you willingly gave some of the haul away to that twerp." Meowth offered too. Jessie and James nodded.

"Yes, I believe he'd be more mad than glad once he hears the whole story." James assessed with a shrug.

Miguel couldn't contain a squeak, and Jessie laughed at their dismay.

"Grow up, we've all failed before, I'm sure he won't be too hard on you, Roger." Jessie said with faux sincerity.

"My name's Miguel." Miguel replied in a mixture of anger and confusion.

"Not for long, after you share your story with him, he won't even bother to remember your name. He'll call you whatever name he wants, and you'll answer to it." James chimed in. He was much more sincere, though Miguel wasn't sure that was a good thing.

"Unless…" Meowth started but trailed off, quickly grabbing Miguel's attention.

"Unless what?" They asked urgently. "How can I fix this?"

"There is no 'unless', Meowth is just trying to rile you up, Roger." James patted their shoulder.

"It's Miguel, the super scientist." Miguel told them again. Both Jessie and James chuckled lightly. "There has to be some way, right?"

"Please, not unless you want to pawn your whole story off onto someone else and make them take the blame." Jessie said, waving her hand around. "But nobody would be dumb enough to take the fall for something like that. Letting a fossil go, and putting it in the hands of someone who's declared themselves an enemy of the organization, who dares stand in our way repeatedly? Tough luck, kid."

"Besides, if you have the fossil, ya have to see him, and he'll grill ya then. No way outta that, Roger." Meowth added.

"Are you saying as long as I have this, there's no way out?" Miguel did not bother to correct Meowth on their name this time. "Do you really think the boss will focus more on what I don't have than what I found?"

"Oh, there will be no focus on what you found at all." Jessie even sounded sincere now, and Miguel nearly chucked the fossil to the ground in frustration.

"And he can see a lie a mile away, knows all the right questions to ask." James added, clicking his tongue.

"What should I do, then, if I want to stay with Team Rocket?" Miguel was practically pleading.

"You're dunzo, kid." Jessie said simply. "Unless you expect to shove that off on someone else to give to the boss while you pretend like you even tried to hold that twerp off."

Miguel didn't think twice before they dropped the fossil in their backpack and pushed it into James' arms as they raced away from Mt. Moon. Jessie, James and Meowth watched them go for a few moments before breaking into near cheshire grins.

"Like taking candy from a baby." Jessie commented. James and Meowth laughed.

"Or money from trainers." Meowth added.

James moved over to the hot air balloon basket. The basket was a light green, designed to blend in with the forest environment they were mostly surrounded by to help camouflage it when not in use, with practically their entire lives stashed inside already. He put the backpack into the basket carefully, smiling at their new possession.

"Welp, a successful days work. Let's get back to Viridian City for now and hand this over to the boss." James said. Jessie and Meowth grunted their agreement, and Jessie grumbled a little.

"And don't forget the stupid briefing we'll have to sit through where they go over this mission." She said. "Not looking forward to that part at all."

"You know what they say, Jess." Meowth started. Neither Jessie nor James answered him, as they knew what he was going to say and wanted no part of it. "The boss wants what he wants and gets what he wants."

So, Jessie, James and Meowth headed off as soon as their Meowth-shaped hot air balloon filled with air.

As the sun set behind the imposing figure of Mt. Moon, Ash, Misty, and Brock sat around their campfire for the night. All of their Pokemon were out and about, relaxing after their eventful day.

"I can't believe you found a Clefairy, Ash." Misty said in awe. Ash smiled.

"Well, she found me is more like it." He said wryly. "I told you; we were totally lost in there and it would've taken us forever to even get out the way we came in, let alone finding a path out. We're lucky Clefairy took pity on us."

"That's incredible too. I wonder what made it decide to do that? I mean, there's plenty of people that get lost and in there every week that just have to find their own way out. Clefairy don't make a habit of just guiding any lost trainer in Mt. Moon." Brock noted next.

"If you really want to know…" Ash paused briefly, as if debating on going forward. "I think it was because she saw me clearing Team Rocket out of the cave, and that was the Clefairy's way of saying thank you."

He didn't want to sound crazy, and he knew how it might sound, but he could feel in his heart that was the case. He just hoped Misty and Brock believed him. Or at least didn't laugh at him.

"That makes sense." Brock said simply, nodding along.

"Clefairy are some of the rarest Pokemon in Kanto, I bet they'd much rather take their chances with you than Team Rocket." Misty added.

Just like that, a weight was lifted from Ash's shoulders.

"I found a few things in there that some Team Rocket members left behind that might be useful. And I won something in a battle from another scientist, but I think they were with Team Rocket too." Ash moved to his discarded backpack, pulling out all his valuables.

"A few potions, an escape rope, a TM and… a shiny rock?" Misty assessed the items. Ash put the CD into his Pokedex and booted it up as Brock reached for the purple-colored rock.

"The TM is for Bullet Seed. That could be useful later." Ash noted as Brock inspected the rock.

"I think this is called a star piece. You can tell because of the shape, and the shining purple color." Brock scratched his chin with his other hand. "It's probably worth a decent amount of money." He handed it back to Ash, who was digging through his bag again.

"And what do you make of this?" Ash's tone was teasing as he pulled the fossil out of his bag next, leaving Misty and Brock stunned.

"Is that…?" Misty started, and Ash nodded with a smile.

"The scientist gave it to me, but I think it was just to get me out of the way quicker." Ash said, looking down at it. "I want you to have it, Brock."

Brock quickly started to protest, and Misty couldn't keep the smile off her face.

"Yeah, it'll be something to symbolize the start of your journey! You're not just a kid anymore playing in the caves, you're on your own Pokemon journey now!" Misty said excitedly.

"What am I gonna do with it, anyway? I couldn't sell it knowing how much it means to you." Ash agreed.

Brock relented and took the slab of stone from Ash to hold on his lap. He stared down at the protruding shell-like shape, touching it with his fingertips.

"Some places are getting closer to fossil restoration," Brock supplied. "Are you sure you wouldn't,"

"I'm sure." Ash interrupted quickly but confidently as Brock stared down at the fossil.

"Thanks, Ash." Brock said almost quietly, hoping it conveyed that this was the single nicest thing anyone had ever done for him.

"Where's my super cool mystery gift, mister Ketchum?" Misty teased, crossing her arms, and looking at Ash's backpack.

"Isn't my friendship gift enough for you?" Ash joked back. She pretended to think about it.

"Maybe for now," She paused a beat. "But you're on thin ice."

They all shared a good laugh before they started moving about and getting ready for bed. None of them had tents to set up, so they laid out a few sleeping bags surrounded by a fire small enough they felt comfortable not having anyone keep watch, sectioned off by a ring of rocks.

After exchanging a few 'goodnight's, the three drifted off to sleep after their first eventful day as a traveling trio.

The start the next morning wasn't super early, oping instead to carefully gather everything up and wade through Route 4 carefully to avoid running into more of Team Rocket. The trip to Cerulean City shouldn't take them very long, and Ash wasn't planning on challenging this gym immediately either.

Despite his excitement to challenge the Cerulean Gym, much like the Pewter Gym, he wanted a chance to collect his bearings and see how much training was needed before hand. He had a pretty impressive streak going so far, having only lost to Misty in a few training sessions, and he wasn't eager to break that by rushing into a gym battle.

They talked aimlessly as they trekked, Ash noting he wanted to call his mom and sister again as well as Professor Oak soon to tell him about his progress. He was eager to show off his Pokedex logs and see if the professor had any errands for him, and Brock suggested checking the trainer boards once they reached Cerulean, until the conversation drifted back to the Cerulean Gym. Namely, Misty's sisters.

"You said your sisters were the Sensational Sisters, didn't you Misty?" Ash asked. "Can you tell me anything I should know, or are you on their side?"

"Believe me, I'm not on their side at all." Misty grumbled. "I'd love to watch you smack them all down a little, but my one sister Daisy does pretty much all the battling for the gym. She's the only one who's smart enough to realize that the money the gym gets from the League is what funds their water shows and without it, they'd need other jobs."

"Sounds like they're more performers than trainers." Ash commented, and Misty let out a sigh.

"You can say that again. I was always the only one who liked battling with Pokemon, they always made me feel like that was a crime growing up. But it sure saved their asses when I was coaching Daisy on how to be a gym leader." Misty replied. "All I can really tell you that you couldn't find online yourself is that she loves to decide on rules on the fly, so don't be surprised if you have to do a 1-on-1, 2-on-2 or 3-on-3." She paused. "Substitutes too, sometimes she doesn't let the challenger do them and sometimes they're okay for both sides."

"I think I understand why you left home. She sounds…" Brock lamented but trailed off, but Misty finished happily.

"Irritating, I know. But that's sisters for you." She said.

Ash didn't want to point out that that was not, in fact, his sister, but thought better of it. He was about to ask about why Misty had set out on her own in the first place, when another trainer in red grabbed his attention with a shout.

"You! Would you care for a battle?" A girl in a red skirt asked cheerily, and Ash didn't hesitate to accept.

"You bet! I'm Ash, and this is Pikachu. Are you a Master Trainer?" Ash introduced. She smiled happily.

"I am! I'm Master Trainer Rena, nice to meet you both." Rena held up her Pokeball, and Ash squared his stance.

"Bulbasaur, go!"

"Pikachu, I choose you!"

The familiar green plant-like Pokemon appeared across from Ash and Pikachu. Rena's was bigger than Leaf's was, which was to be expected as Leaf's was a younger, less experienced one. He relished the challenge.

"Bulbasaur, use Tackle!" Rena commanded.

Bulbasaur shot forward with shocking speed for such stubby legs and nearly connected with Pikachu, but he dodged of his own accord before Ash needed to shout.

"Growl, Pikachu!" Ash replied.

Pikachu bared his teeth at Bulbasaur, growling lowly. Bulbasaur cringed away from Pikachu as Rena called her next order.

"Vine Whip!"

"Dodge it!"

Bulbasaur reached for Pikachu with thick, dark green vines coming from either side of its bulb, but Pikachu leapt to the side before either could make contact with him.

"Again!" Rena shouted, and the vines shifted direction.

"Get in close, Pikachu!" Ash cried out.

Pikachu charged forward, avoiding one of the vines again but one struck his side hard enough to fling him over. He groaned and Bulbasaur raised his vines to strike again, but Ash was quicker.

"Thunder Wave!"

Golden rings shot out of Pikachu's electric sacs, growing the further they got from him until they were big enough to encompass Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur hesitated as they surrounded it, its muscles seeming to lock up as the vines were about to strike Pikachu.

"A direct hit!" Misty noted with joy from the sidelines.

"You can shake it off, Bulbasaur! Use Razor Leaf!" Rena shouted.

Bulbasaur nodded, retracting its vines, and instead replacing them with razor-sharp, crescent-shaped leaves from underneath its bulb as well. They shot forward at Pikachu in a flurry. He dodged a few, but still got hit by multiple as it got harder to react in time. Pikachu felt another one slam into his side, and he wished he could be faster.

"Pikachu, shake it off, okay? Just wait for your opening!" Ash said confidently, and Pikachu couldn't help but trust him.

He did his best to dodge the remaining volley of leaves, still getting nicked a few times but nothing severe, until Bulbasaur's paralysis played its part. Bulbasaur's body locked up more than before and small sparks of yellow appeared, and Ash seized the chance.

"ThunderShock!"

Pikachu shot off the attack without issue, striking Bulbasaur true. It groaned in pain, but it didn't fall. Ash and Pikachu could feel each other growl in dismay and narrow their eyes. Rena smiled and commanded Bulbasaur again.

"Vine Whip!" Rena commanded.

Bulbasaur used its vines again, moving to strike Pikachu the moment its electric barrage ended. This time it went better for Pikachu, taking the first few hits before becoming better accustomed to their speed and being able to dodge them. As Bulbasaur backed him against a tree, Ash shouted out again.

"Cut that tree down with Brick Break!" Ash ordered.

Pikachu replied swiftly, turning with his tail already glowing and cutting the tree by the base. The would-be stump was even shorter than Pikachu and the rest of the tree came toppling forward. Pikachu was already out of the way, but Bulbasaur had to jump to avoid the sudden falling obstacle.

"There, now use ThunderShock again!"

Electricity arced out of Pikachu again, striking the air-borne Bulbasaur with the practice of firing ThunderShock's against not only his avian team mates, but the seemingly endless amount of Team Rocket's Zubat in Mt. Moon. This shock did more damage to Bulbasaur, and it looked much more exhausted this time after it hit the ground roughly.

"Get back up, Bulbasaur! You can do it!" Rena encouraged her dual-type to get back to its feet. "Get back up and use Sludge Bomb!" Bulbasaur struggled back to its feet and obeyed. Out of the top of its bulb, it fired multiple globs of brown sludge into the air that rained down on Pikachu.

Ash had to do a double-take at the attack.

"Block them as best you can with Brick Break!" Ash countered.

Pikachu fired up the fighting-type attack again and swatted at what came close to him. He dodged several and smacked at several more until Bulbasaur let up, unable to continue firing at the rate it was going.

"I sure wasn't expecting a Sludge Bomb from Bulbasaur, that was so cool!" Ash praised. Rena seemed grateful, if a bit bemused, by the statement. "But we're still gonna win! Pikachu, use Brick Break again! On Bulbasaur!"

"Grab it with Vine Whip!"

Pikachu ran forward as Bulbasaur shot out another pair of vines. Pikachu dodged the vines twice, then three times until it was just beyond swinging distance from Bulbasaur before the grass-type caught up with him. One vine wrapped his tail and the other started to encircle his body. Pikachu growled and tried to wriggle free, but the vines just held tighter. Rena let out a victory huff, as if she thought the battle was won, but Ash smiled larger.

"Hold on just a minute longer, Pikachu!" Ash cried. Pikachu fought and fought for what felt like hours, but was hardly a few seconds, before Bulbasaur's body betrayed it again and locked up. Pikachu felt the vines go slack around him and knew this was their moment.

"ThunderShock, let 'em have it!"

Pikachu unleased another ThunderShock on Bulbasaur, who seemed to take more damage due to the proximity. Bulbasaur slowly was forced to release Pikachu and slumped down, unable to battle.

"Alright! Wait to go, Pikachu!" Ash dashed forward and scooped Pikachu off the floor and into a hug that the mouse couldn't help but at least try to return.

"Well, I'll be." Rena said, recalling Bulbasaur. "It's been a while since we lost to any electric Pokemon like that."

"It was nothing. Thanks for a great battle, Rena. It's super awesome that Bulbasaur knows Sludge Bomb, that really caught us off guard." Ash complimented her. She played with the hem of her red skirt.

"Most Master Trainers do it, we teach our Pokemon a pretty advanced more for its species. It helps as a trump card a lot." She said.

"I bet. Let's battle again one day, huh?" Ash suggested. Rena smiled as she reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out a small red button with a Bulbasaur image stamped onto it.

"You bet. Here's your Bulbasaur button, you've earned it." Rena presented it to Ash and bowed her head.

Ash and Pikachu both did the same, and the trio continued on their way.

The temperature dropped dramatically as they crossed off of Route 4 and over the threshold into Cerulean City. The city was right next to a flowing river that gave it a different atmosphere than the other cities Ash had passed through.

Pallet Town was small and quiet. Despite technically being only a short distance away from the water-path of Route 21, it was decidedly not part of the cities environment to the point that most forgot about it. Viridian was connected to its beautiful, lush forest pretty directly which held a river and a plethora of smaller lakes but somehow that only added to the forests glow while Pewter was decidedly a mountainous, cavernous city. Cerulean was the first city that the sight of water felt both significant and seamless.

"What's first, guys?" Brock asked as they all seemed to become refreshed by the moisture in the air.

"It's still really early, we can get all our Psyduck's in a row and still have practically a whole day." Misty added.

"Yea, you're right. We should head over to the Pokemon Center so we can start with getting our room. I can look the trainer job boards from there and check out any current events." Ash suggested.

"That'd be nice, knowing we won't have to sleep on the ground for a couple of days." Misty agreed.

They passed through the town, with Brock making a note of the police presence outside a few of the houses.

"I wonder what's going on over there…" He muttered out loud. "And if I could be of any service to Officer Jenny?"

"Oh no you don't, I'd recognize that voice anywhere." Misty cut in, grabbing him by the elbow. "That's the sound of a love-struck boy, and I'd be ashamed if I let a love-struck boy go wandering all over my city and straight to bothering Officer Jenny."

"Ah, hey, I promise it's in good faith!" Brock protested, but they continued moving anyway. They were all slightly deterred by the large crowd and their last tangle with Team Rocket, but it was that that made Brock speak up again. "We should talk to her anyway, you know." All traces of goofy infatuation gone from his voice. "About what happened on Mt. Moon. I'm sure that's the sort of thing the police would like to know about."

"You're probably right." Ash agreed, glancing back. "But we can check in at the Pokemon Center first, I'm sure a few hours won't matter much."

It wasn't long after that they made it to the Pokemon Center. Nurse Joy asked them how long they'd be in town, and since it was going to be at least a few days she gave them keys to a bigger room. This room wasn't actually much bigger square footage wise but had two sets of bunk beds in it to maximize occupancy since they said they would rather share.

Ash and Misty both picked the same positions as last time they encountered a bunk bed while Brock dropped onto the bottom bunk of the other set. They all took a few moments to drop their bags and unpack their essentials, no use carrying dead weight around town with them the next few days.

"So, what's the plan for today?" Misty asked out loud. "What's our to-do list?"

"Well, I've definitely got training to do before I challenge the gym. And I want to check the trainer boards to see if there's any jobs I can do. Professor Oak said he'd give me jobs sometimes, but the trainer boards could be an easy way to train and make some extra money and be helpful down the line for his research." He paused. "I can do that at anytime before we leave, though."

"Money is always good because we for sure should go shopping again. With three of us we'll need to restock before we head out, who knows how long it'll take to get from here to wherever we go next." Brock added.

"Same objectives as usual then, got it." Misty summarized. "We could go visit the gym first if you wanted, Ash. I should probably make sure my sisters haven't let all the water drain out before you go in expecting a battle."

"And don't forget Officer Jenny. We said we should stop by and speak with her, too." Brock threw in again. Ash and Misty nodded, and just like that most of the plans were finalized.

"What kind of training did you want to do, Ash?" Misty asked, glancing over at him.

They could see Misty's sisters and Officer Jenny before even the middle of the afternoon if things went smoothly, and it wasn't even eleven o'clock yet. They had time to discuss Ash's strategy before heading back out.

"Well, that battle with Rena had me and Pikachu sweating for the first time since…" Ash paused, thinking back to the hundreds of Spearow chasing them across Route 1. He could still feel their beaks pecking at his arms. "We battled Onix. ThunderShock and Brick Break weren't very effective against Bulbasaur, so I think it's time for Pikachu to learn another attacking move. Something with a wider range of effectiveness."

"It is strange Pikachu hasn't seemed to pick up any normal-type attacks." Brock piped up.

"I think that's where we'll start. I was reading about Pikachu in the Pokedex a few days ago and saw a couple good choices, like Quick Attack." Ash said. Misty and Brock both nodded.

"And the others?" Misty asked further. Ash scratched his cheek.

"I think mostly just stamina training, probably dodging better too. They're both flying-types so dodging will always be one of their strongest points compared to other types, and Pikachu's a great Pokemon to practice against so they can build up to shaking off electric attacks a little easier too." He answered finally. "They're probably overdue for some grooming too, I'll probably take everyone out to the woods again today or tomorrow."

"Sounds like you've thought most of this through already. I can't say I'm surprised, though." Brock commented. Ash smiled sheepishly.

"What can I say, I have a one-track mind. Pokemon are all I can think about when I'm laying there trying to go to sleep." Ash said, smiling at Pikachu as he crawled onto his trainers lap.

"Pokemon are all you can think about at all, Ash." Misty said sternly. Brock laughed from his side of the room.

"Sue me." Ash shot back. "So, where to first?"

"I vote my sisters first." Misty said simply, standing up. Ash and Brock mimicked her and Pikachu perched himself on Ash's shoulder, ready for departure.

"I can't believe you're so eager to seem them, Misty. It didn't sound like you guys were that close from they way you were talking on the way here." Brock observed.

"I'm not, if we went there second, I'd have to make up some other reason why I have to leave, but if we see them first, I have a great excuse to leave when I've had enough." She replied almost too happily.

Ash, Pikachu, and Brock all sweat dropped as their bedroom door closed behind them.

And curtain fall for chapter ten! I hope this was entertaining, I know Route 4 isn't the most exciting place for a chapter setting but there was a lot of things I wanted to include before we jump into this MONSTER of an arc I have planned for Cerulean City. Jessie and James cameo in the beginning, we may see them again soon but it might be a hot minute until Ash sees them so I wanted to include this part sooner; I want to stress that while Jessie and James are semi-competent at their jobs here compared to the original anime, I'm going through great lengths to show that they are mostly masters of the art of bullshitting. They will be riding Ash's coattails through every encounter with their higher-ups in Team Rocket and profiting from his exploits. This also gives more incentive for them to follow him around in addition to their suspicions about Ash's Pikachu.

I have changed the Sensational Sisters characters a bit, as hinted here. The way they were shown in canon was obviously not going to work with the way I want gyms to be handled here, much less gyms in the Big Eight. But fear not, Ash and Misty will still have a battle before the sun sets on the Cerulean Arc.

And what's this? Brock gets a fossil? Almost like he should gave gotten one of those in the first place. Crazy. Anyway.

Speed Reader: Thanks, I'm glad you feel that way! I'm trying to find a good balance throughout here, I'm glad it seems to be working for most people.

LinariusMoon: AW I appreciate that so much! I'm glad you're enjoying it, I hope to have something more for you soon!
