The Phoenix
I once lay on the roof top
Watching as the sun went to bed
Making wistful patterns in the clouds
That danced above my head
I had not expected company
To join me in my thoughts
To tell the truth I was hiding
For with melancholy I was caught
My guest was not someone you're familiar with
For they came on gilded wing
The golden light shone bright on blue
Just its beauty made my eyes sting
It looked at me knowingly
With its amber eye
Even so I held my breath
For it looked like it would cry
I'm not sure why it would shed tears
Especially being by my side
For if it was what I think it was
I had no fresh injuries to hide
But still it raised its gold trimmed crest
And opened wide its beak
It sang to me a melodic tune
Its only description being unique
It seemed to sing of sadness
Yet there was power in its song
Like it was trying to give me hope or something
Trying to help me carry on
And when its song was finished
It flapped its wings at me
Then hopped to the edge of the roof
To an area that no one else could see
It sent me back one final look
Before it spread its wings out wide
Blue flames appeared from that point on
All I could do was watch on horrified
To think that such a beautiful creature
Could set itself alight
With shimmering blue and gold flames
I swear it gave me a fright
But just as quickly as it arrived
It took off into the sun
Dancing and swooping as rays met flames
Like it was happy to have met someone
When night time fell and I returned inside
The others asked where I had been
I told them of my gorgeous guest
Though they did not believe what I had seen
And yet I find that quite okay
For what I say next is true
Because being with that phoenix
Reminded me of times with you.
