The Christmas Gift

I remember the day
I was told they were coming
I was hanging decorations
By the Christmas tree

Upon the table
I was standing by
Rested a wreath and plate
Holding lit candles three

I was almost finished my task
Looking to check all was done
When I noticed Nya by the door
And biting her lip with worry

Hidden behind her back
She held something in her hand
So I made my way over
And begged her tell her story

I don't like seeing her this way
It almost breaks my heart in two
But before I could say anything
She showed what was in her hand

At first I was confused
For it looked like a stick
But as she begged me focus
I realised it meant something grand

Two little lines peered back at me
Within its tiny screen
My brain had to take a moment
To register what that meant

Nya even called my name
For it seemed that I had froze
But then a grin split across my lips
For she held a great present

We had been trying for so long
Near a year I'd have to say
And to hear of this right now
It made my heart just sing

I wrapped my arms around her
And maybe did a little spin
And to hear Nya's relieved giggles
My heart took to wing

I wondered what we'd be having
A little boy or little girl
But as my lips touched Nya's
I guess I kind of knew

Boy or girl it did not matter
For they'd be loved equally the same
Okay more like spoilt
By their aunts and uncles too

I never did get back to decorating
Just kept holding Nya in my arms
Swaying gently with happiness
And maybe a tear in my eye

Which was how the others found us
At the end of the day
But with how we were that moment
We missed the soft smile from Kai
