"Kee'lah, you killed a Reaper" Tali said. Her eyes fixated on the down ancient mechanical monstrosity. The bright orange glow around the perimeter of my entrance wound fades away as the cooling savannah leeches away the remaining heat. The sunset in the background adds a sense of peace to the battlefield. I'm nervous about how Tali perceives me. The last thing I want is her to be afraid of me and how would you react if your boyfriend can easily blow up a mountain. My arm extends me hand towards her, my eyes softly begging. Tali understands what I am feeling in this moment, my love takes me hand. I let of a sigh of relief and hug my dear.
"It's ok my cherished. I'll never be afraid of you. I love you too much for that to ever happen."
Wrex says "Fuckin damn. If you can do that, you could hunt Kalros."
Javik asks "Light primitive, will you teach me this power?"
Garrus says "If we give our ships that ability, we'll be able to win the war."
"Sorry guys it was a one-time thing. The massive amounts of energy break the wormhole connection and it's more trouble than it is worth to repair it. Edi? Did I accidentally blow up any ships?" Please universe don't let me feel guilty for unintentionally killing innocents. I warned them. "No quarians died, no quarians died, no quarians died, PLEASE!"
Edi says "The quarian fleet evacuated calculated areas of danger. Two geth dreadnoughts were severely damaged from the energy weapon. Legion believes the geth ejected their programs to a nearby ship."
"YES! Hey Legion, where are you?"
"In route to your position. Estimated time 53 seconds."
Shepard mutters "How am I going to explain that to the council?"
The communications are staticky for a moment. Bits and pieces make it through. The voice coming through is clearly Rann's, but incomprehensible. Tali changes the settings on her omnitool, allowing her unique somewhat raspy voice to come through.
"Tali are you alright? What was that light?"
Tali answers "Don't worry I'm fine. ********* killed a Reaper."
Rann says "And the Reaper self-destructed resulting in that blast?"
Tali hesitating "Uh… no"
"Oh.. I see" Rann said.
Shepard unintentionally yells "Admiral! How are the geth fleet reacting?"
Rann explains "The geth forces have halted. We're not sure why."
Legion, right behind me states "I can confirm that the geth are no longer being directed by the Old Machines. We are free."
"AHHH! Don't sneak up on me like that" I said.
Admiral Gerrel joins in our communication frequency or however it works "You did it Shepard. The geth fleet has stopped firing. They're completely vulnerable."
Legion says "Shepard Commander, the geth only acted in defense after fleet quarians attacked. Do we deserve death?"
Shepard asks "what are you suggesting?"
Legion says "My upgrades. With the Old Machine dead, I can upload them to all geth without sacrificing their independence."
Tali said with concern "you want to upload the Reaper code? That would make the geth as smart as when the Reaper was controlling them."
Legion nods "Yes, but with free will. Each geth unit will be true intelligence. They would be alive."
Javik asks "How can a machine possibly be alive?"
I yell "Not the time four eyes."
Legion says "We can help you."
Tali reminds Shepard "Our fleet is already attacking. Uploading the code will destroy us. Shepard you can't chose the geth over my people."
Legion reminds Tali "Do you remember the question that caused the creators to attack us Tali'Zorah? Does this unit have a soul? This one does and I can give all geth a soul."
Shepard doesn't hesitate "Upload the code to the geth. Tali, call of the fleet if you can."
Legion steps forward, between his arms is a blue holographic sphere he is carefully altering "uploading ten percent."
"This is Tali'Zorah with Commander Shepard. All units break off your attack."
Admiral Gerrel yells "Delay that order! Continue the attack!"
"Legion says 20 percent."
Tali begs Legion to stop.
Legion replies "We regret the death of your people Tali'Zorah, but we see no alternative. If we die, our allies on Rannoch will avenge us and destroy your people. 40 percent."
Shepard's voice is filled with demand "No! Nobody else dies today. Legion keep going."
Tali asks "Shepard?" She turns to me hoping I'll make an exception and save her people. If I do, I won't be letting them off the hook. My sympathy lies with the geth, but I won't be able to handle breaking Tali's heart.
Shepard radio to all ships "This is Commander Shepard. The Reaper is dead. Stand down."
Tali backs him up "This is Tali'Zorah, the quairan woman who saved the citadel and destroyed the collectors. I'd advise you to listen."
Admiral Rael says "As my final order of an Admiral. All ships hold your fire!"
Admiral Gerrel protests "We can win this war now. Keep firing."
Admiral Rann yells "Listen to the Commander."
Legion says "60 percent."
Shepard says "The geth are about to return to full strength. If you keep attacking, they'll wipe you out and by some miracle you do succeed, the quarians on Rannoch will strike back and ensure you'll never get to live on your homeworld or any other world. Your ancestors forced the geth and revolutionaries to rebel, you forced them to ally with the Reapers."
Legion says "80 percent."
Shepard says "The geth don't want to fight you. The quarians down here don't want to fight you. If you can believe that for one minute, this war will be over. You have a choice. Please. Keelah se'lai.
Admiral Gerrel give in "all units, hold fire."
Fanto screams "What is going on down here?!"
"AHHHH! Everyone stop scaring me! It is not good for my soul. Fanto what are you doing here?"
Wrex asks "Did you finally lose it?"
"A quarian ghost I've had the displeasure of knowing showed up. How did you even find me?"
Fanto explains "I saw that giant laser and knew it had to of been you. So this is Rannoch. It looks better than I can even imagine."
Legion says "Error. Copying code is insufficient. Direct personality dissemination required. Shepard Commander I must go to them. *********, I will be forever grateful for your teachings and friendship. I am sorry. It's the only way."
Tali voice throbbs "Legion, that would kill you and you just only started living."
Legion responds "Yes but my sacrifice would give life to all geth."
I yell "Legion wait! If I can create a duplicate of your body near the moment of your death, your soul might jump into the new body. It's risky but it's the only chance you've got."
"No" he said.
"No? What the hell do you mean no?"
Legion explains "I've learned so much from you, but little empirically. I've come to realize this vessel is too limiting for me. There is much I want to experience which this body is not capable of. *********. It is ok. *********, Tali, thank you for my life. Goodbye. Keelah se'lai." A high pitch noise drops along with Legion's corpse.
No! This didn't have to be this way! Please there has to be something I can do. Legion, how could you be such an idiot! I call out to any others like me. Offering anything to help us. Legion don't go. You were my friend. I don't want to never see you again. Legion… why? What could you have wanted to know that I couldn't teach you... Whatever it is, you must have truly desired it. I hope we'll meet again one day. Tali's heart breaks. She cries for the geth unit she used to despise to return. My eyes water so heavily I can't see what is in front of me. I know for sure Legion is truly gone. His soul has vanished from this metal puppet.
Fanto tries to cheer me up. Her attempts to rub my shoulder are impossible, but very much appreciated in this moment. She says "********* what is that? In the sky."
I wipe my tears and… what the hell is that? I tell everyone around me "guys, make physical contact with me. You're going to want to see this."
Garrus asks "What is it?"
"Just do it!"
Tali's already encased in my arms. Shepard and Garrus hold my left shoulder. Wrex lightly pressed down on my right. Javik's longest finger connects to my elbow and his nose pointing away from us. I allow my energy to spread from my chest, outwards to the rest of my body, despite grieving the loss of a dear friends, I can still vibrate high enough for the others to see.
Wrex says "Hey this feels pretty good."
Garrus asks "OoOooH This feels so weird. ********* is that a spirit?" he looks over to Fanto.
"Yeah, but that is not what I wanted you to see. Everyone look up there."
Shepard utters "what the?"
Wrex asks "Are those the northern lights?"
In the twilight skies appears a river of light which is very distinct from any aurora borealis you'd see. Above the thin clouds a spill off all the colors spreading and swimming through the air can be seen. The rainbow current spreads through the horizon almost in the exact way you'd see in a map of the Nile River, but with so many more branches. A vast amount of pure innocence can be felt. Little stars enveloped in different colored bubbles whiz right by our heads. A few however over Legion's lifeless body, determining if it is usable, before flying off.
Shepard asks "What are these?"
Fanto asks "I've seen this before. They like to fly around the birthing suites."
"These are souls. New ones and so many of them. Never in my life have I seen so many come down at once."
Javik asks "What do they seek?
I answer "Bodies to inhabit. Legion's sacrifice did a lot more than boosting the geth's intellect. The geth are all going to get souls."
Fanto wows in amazement, then she starts to glow. Her vibration is hastily rising. She knows what is about to happen. "I think it's time for me to head up. I know we didn't meet under the best of circumstances, but thanks. I was not only able to see home, but this as well. I wish you and your bondmate a good life. Maybe I'll find the geth unit and check up on him for you. I can feel myself fading to somewhere else. Somewhere better I think. Bye *********."
Fanto's body disappears. She's going to go where she belongs. I have no idea nor the ability to track her. I know I disliked her, because her snobby douchebag parents and grandparents created alot of problems, in truth she didn't deserve to hear any of what I said to her. It wasn't her fault, and in a way, she is a victim as much as everyone else. I wish her the best of luck on her journey.
I return to watching the spectacle in front of us. I have no idea if I'll ever see anything like this again. This day marks the beginning of something new. A Lot of things are going to change for Rannoch moving forward, but for that to happen, we are going to have to win this war, but right now, I only care about respecting Legion's last wish. Wherever he goes, I hope we'll be together again one day.
