"I just want to do this once." Kim walked over to her closet and pulled out a dress. She pulled it over her head and was surprised when the waist wouldn't go over her boobs. She dropped it for a moment and stared straight ahead, before feeling Thomas gently tug it off for her. The fear raced through her as she tried to figure out how she could hide her pregnacy for a little bit longer.
"That's fine." Thomas continued about his morning routine going to shave and not noticing that Kimberly had frozen in front of her closet. He wiped off his face as he walked back into their bedroom and realized she hadn't moved. "Babe?"
"I don't know if anything else…that was the last dress that fit. Without it being obvious," Kim muttered and he wrapped his arms around her, gently caressing her ever expanding abdomen. He didn't care if it was obvious. He had wanted to tell everyone when she hit the 12 week mark, she had insisted they wait until closer to 16.
"Then it's obvious. Your dad is coming over tonight so that we can tell him. Unless you're worried about…" Thomas trailed off as he caught the look on her face. It wasn't her dad, it was everyone else.
"They don't know we're married. They know we're soulmates, but that doesn't mean anything to most of them and…I just…I thought I had longer." Kimberly threw other options out of the closet on to their bed, desperate to find something that might work for today. She was finally going to the normal prophet classes and she just didn't want the eyes on her in this way. Thomas watched her for a bit, before he walked over and grabbed both of her hands. He then walked over and picked up the dress she had favored most lately and held it up. "I tried it on yesterday and I look…"
"I know, but this is what you feel best in. So wear it." Thomas reasoned and she shook her head. She just couldn't do that. He then went to his closet and looked for anything that might make her feel better. All of his sweaters now belonged to her, but it was too warm for that. He finally found a light weight flannel shirt, maybe she could make this work. "Do any of your pants fit?"
"Yeah." Kim hiccuped as she dug for a pair and held them up. He tossed her his shirt and then grabbed an undershirt she could wear. "Tommy, you don't have to."
"I don't know if that will even cover it, but it's worth a try. We've got to get going in 5. I don't think Theo will be able to give me an excuse to be late to exams." Thomas pulled together his book bag and she tried on the clothes he had passed her. It definitely wasn't perfect, but she appreciated that he had given her something she felt comfortable wearing. "Hey. I love you."
"Love you too." Kim reached for her bag and he scooped it up before putting an arm around her in a half hug. She didn't know what it was about him, but the smallest things could set her world right.
"Okay- what gives? You never wear Thomas' clothes." Trini sat down with Kimberly in the quad and she leaned back against the table. Kimberly instead faced the table and laid her head down. She was so tired today. Thomas had been up so much later this week finishing out exam prep. Everyone expected him to be the highest ranking in his class and he had put extra pressure on himself to blow the testing out of the water, to get a chance at skipping years in the Upper Academy. It hadn't happened in decades, but he was on track to skip straight to the final year if this week went well. "Kim."
"I'll tell you after he wraps up exams. Promise." Kim sat up and then leaned against her. This felt far more comfortable and she really hoped that Trini wouldn't mind. Slowly the other members of Thomas' class emerged from their combatives exam, but she knew that he would be one of the last ones tested. Partially because of where he fell alphabetically, but mostly because they needed to bring in a different group to test him.
"He's getting the ranger team they pulled out of retirement." Jason sat down on Kim's other side and she looked over at him. She was not sure why he was telling her that. All it did was spike her fear. Thomas was good, but she knew that to be a full fledged ranger- you had to be excellent. She didn't know that this group had regularly trained him before their retirement and that he had taken them down easily by the end. "You okay?"
"Yeah. It's a rest and relax day for us. So there was meditation, yoga, a really good massage," Kim said and Jason gave her a confused look. "There's a handful of things that help keep my powers from being disruptive and that's most of them. They know this time of year is stressful for us and for the cadets, so we get a day or two like this. I mean- we can't exactly do exams. You either are or aren't a prophet."
"That was quick," Trini whispered as Kim blinked her eyes open, unaware that she had nodded off. She felt arms wrap around her and she leaned back against Thomas. He kissed her on the cheek and she sighed, contentedly, in his arms. She was home again. "So…what gives with the clothes?"
"What do you mean?" Rocky asked as he glanced around at everyone and couldn't tell why Trini would ask about clothes.
"She never wears Thomas' clothes," Trini stated and Rocky stared at her before looking up at Thomas. Zach shook his head as he noticed how Thomas was holding Kimberly for the first time. Over the last several weeks, they had started to suspect something had changed with them, but no one had been willing to ask about what it might be.
"You good?" Thomas asked as she nodded and he locked eyes with her for a moment to make sure she wasn't trying to bluff him. Satisfied that she was okay with him telling them, he ran his fingers through his hair and Trini stared at his hand. He had covered the tattoo on the inside of his finger until today. They had agreed it was safest to do that. "Which one first?"
"I mean us being married probably isn't that surprising," Kimberly said as she felt them all stare at her and she then gulped. "Or maybe it is."
"Well…we might as well just finish shocking them. We're going to be parents- in September." Thomas was bear hugged by Jason as Trini let out a squeal and then hugged Kimberly tight. Zach and Rocky joined in and he let out a sigh. This was the group he cared about when it came to reactions. Everyone else didn't matter nearly as much to him.
"Shopping?" Trini asked as Kim nodded and Trini bounced next to her. She spun around on the bench and examined her a bit more closely. "How have you hid that so well?"
"I feel like I just started really showing this week and everything stopped fitting this week too…sooo- that's why I'm in Tommy's clothes," Kim said as Trini hugged her again and then glanced over to see the joy on Thomas' face as well. "Enough about me. How did it go?"
"He was impressive," Theo said as he joined the table and Thomas looked back at him. "They'd like for you to come back for a bit. There's a few things we still need to assess. Kim- if you want to come too…"
"Do you want me there?" Kim asked as Thomas looked between her and Theo before he nodded. "Okay."
They walked across the quad and Thomas felt all eyes on them. No one got called back into combatives. There were other portions of their exams where this normally happened, but it was never combatives.
"Thomas," Judah said as they walked back into the room and he looked up to see the group that had assembled. "How would you feel about coming directly to the team pool?"
"Are…you can't be…" Thomas stared around as he realized all of the elders had gathered here, aside from his father. This was unheard of, but it had always been a possibility. "Kimmie…"
"It's what you want." Kimberly wrapped an arm around him and he thought about it for a moment. It was an honor to be asked to be in the pool, but he knew that the next few years were going to be rough.
"Can I think it over? We need to weigh some things out." Thomas searched around the room until he saw Theo nod and he let out a haggard breath.
"The offer will always stand Thomas. Whenever you want," Judah said and Thomas looked over at Kimberly who just smiled at him and he closed his eyes. He desperately wanted to be on a team now, to give it a better chance to save her. He also knew that he couldn't be on a Power Ranger team and raise a child. That would be exceedingly difficult.
"Hey Dad!" Kimberly chirped as she heard him walk in and glanced back to see that Thomas had grabbed the box for her. "We've got something for you."
"It can't wait until after dinner?" Doug asked and Kimberly shook her head as Thomas passed him the box. Doug carefully unwrapped the box, taking in the excitement on Kimberly's face and the stoicism on Thomas'. He pulled out the onesie and stared at his daughter. "You're pregnant?"
"16 weeks, give or take." Kimberly wrung her hands as he gave her a smile and then walked around the counter to give her a long hug. He had never thought that they would start a family this quickly, but he knew Thomas would take care of her and any children they had. It was actually one of the few benefits of him being in the Power Ranger pipeline. "I know we're really young, but…"
"I'm so glad that I'll get to be a granddad sooner." Doug rubbed her back and he felt some of the panic go out of her. This was not the path that he had expected for his daughter, but he saw now that this had always been her path. She had always been meant to get here.
