AN: Thank you for the reviews and all the views this last week! I really appreciate them!
One Week Later
Kimberly woke with a scream as she felt hands on her arms and she struggled against them. She had to keep Thomas safe. She could not let him die for her. He was the important one. He was the one that had to live. She continued to struggle and she slowly recognized a voice nearby. She had to get to that voice.
"Let me go," Thomas growled as four of the male staff had him pegged against the wall as he strained to get to her. She had started screaming a couple of minutes ago and they had immediately pulled him away from her. "She doesn't know where she is, but she knows me. Let me go."
"Tommy," Kimberly said as a half sob, half whisper as she strained against the hands again. "Tommy!"
"Let. Them. Go," Robert forced through gritted teeth as the doctors spun around to see him standing in the the doorway and they immediately let go of the both of them. Thomas hurried to Kimberly's side and held her to him as she sobbed. What had she seen? What could have possibly kept her out of it for this long? "Paper and pen."
"Why?" a nurse scoffed as Robert glared at her before pointing for her to leave the room. He did not have time to teach at the moment and he knew that Thomas did not have the patience for it either. Any other day he would have explained prophets, soulmates, and the tenuous balance they had at best when one of them had been hospitalized this long. His nephew and Kimberly were on the most extreme end of this balance.
"Anyone else have stupid questions?" Robert asked as they all shook their heads no. "Paper and pen. Now."
Over the last week, there had been multiple meetings about her condition. There was one thing that they all agreed on- she was likely to come out of this and immediately begin writing. It was the one thing that all of the prophets could agree on. It was also the one thing that Thomas did not want to see happen. He had spent the entire week at the hospital and had only stepped away for a few moments when Theo had forced him to shower and eat.
"Hey," Thomas said as she locked eyes with him and threw herself into his arms. "I got you, you're okay. You're safe."
"Paper," Kimberly forced out as he nodded and then handed her a notebook and pen. He pushed the table across the bed and watched as she sank into writing. He closed his eyes for a moment before he looked up to see Theo standing across from him.
"I'm going to go give her dad a call- just so he knows," Thomas said as Theo nodded and he headed out of the room to find a phone. As much as her dad was not a fan of her being a prophet, he had started to warm up to him over the last several months. This last week, while trying, had brought them together even more.
"We just need to keep food and water available. We don't know how long this will last," Robert said to the staff and they all nodded. "We also need to keep an eye on him. It's been a lot on him, even if he has been holding it together so far."
"Where'd he go?" Kimberly asked as she looked up and pegged Theo with a hard stare. While her mind was racing with prophecies, her body knew when he was nearby and she desperately needed him nearby for this.
"He's calling your dad, he's coming right back," Theo said as Kimberly nodded and then went back to writing. Theo let out a sigh before he took a seat and Robert then sat down next to him. "What is it?"
"We did a lot of tests," Robert said as Theo nodded and then looked over to see Robert struggling to find words. "She's."
"You stop right there," Theo said as he nodded to the door and they both walked out. "She can still hear us and understand us. It's something that Amelia always reminds me about- especially when I make an ass of myself. What's going on?"
"We're detecting a trace amount of human chorionic gonadotropin," Robert said as Theo shook his head that that meant nothing to him.
"A trace amount of what?" Thomas asked as he walked up behind Robert and Robert let out a sigh. He had not wanted to tell Thomas just yet. He wanted to get a chance to run more tests, but he did want to give Theo a warning. This could change everything and he wanted a chance to discuss this with Theo on how it might be best to break it to Thomas.
"HCG- it's a hormone that women produce…" Robert trailed off as he saw the lightbulb click for Theo as he turned and walked off. "It's only a tiny trace, so we can't be sure of anything."
"Cut the doctor talk- what does it mean? What else is wrong with her?" Thomas asked as Robert let out a groan.
"She could be pregnant, but the amount is so small that I wanted to do more tests before talking with either of you about it," Robert said as Thomas took in a deep breath and then nodded. "You're taking this surprisingly well."
"This last week has been hell. I just want her awake and healthy and in this world," Thomas said as he looked between the two of them. "I'll freak out later- for now, I'm just going to enjoy that she's awake."
"How much more can she have to write?" Thomas asked as he looked around at the stacks of notebooks. He had started going back training this week as he was preparing to move to the Upper Academy and even though he wanted to stay with her, he knew it was important he hone his skills. Amelia had confirmed it while she was unconscious. Kimberly's powers were going to bring her more problems and he needed to be able to protect her. That was his job and he didn't want to fail at it.
"I don't know," Amelia said as Thomas let out a groan of frustration. He had dealt with this well, but they all knew he was nearing a breaking point. "Do you want to take the afternoon with your classmates?"
"No. I want her here. Present. Where I can talk to her and just…" Thomas trailed off as he placed his head in his hands. Amelia placed her hand on his back and he quickly shrugged it off. He did not want prophet comfort. He wanted his wife. "I'm sorry Aunt Amy…I just…"
"I get it. Actually Theo probably gets it a lot better than me," Amelia said as Thomas barely nodded. "These are impressive, Thomas. She's more powerful than we realized."
"I don't care how impressive they are…I just…" Thomas trailed off again before he stood up. "I'm going to go grab dinner. I'll be back in a bit."
"He really needs you back," Amelia whispered as she touched Kimberly's shoulder and got pulled into the vision that Kimberly was in. She felt a moment of panic as this had never happened to her before, but relaxed into it. She couldn't do much to pull herself out of this, but she hoped that Theo would somehow be able to help.
"Ames?" Theo questioned as he grabbed her arm and was surprised when a bolt of electricity went through him. He pulled his hand back as he stared at the both of them. The terror ran through him for a moment, before he gritted his teeth and then pulled her arm away. The pain ran through him, but he immediately felt when she was back with him. "Hey Ames."
"Thank you," Amelia whispered as she shook in his arms. "Theo…she's seeing Kiros."
"I don't know what that means," Theo said as he leaned back so that he could look in her eyes and he saw the true fear there. There were very few things that terrified her anymore, but for some reason this did.
"Kiros is a prophet killer, he's the prophet killer and he only comes after the strongest of us. We need to prepare Thomas. We need to prepare him that he could lose her," Amelia said as Theo shook his head and she just nodded as she leaned into him and he held her close.
"Please don't tell him," Kimberly said as they snapped around to look at her and she closed the notebook in front of her. "How long has it been?"
"Nearly two weeks," Theo supplied as Kimberly nodded and she looked around the room at the stacks and stacks of notebooks.
"They're not in order," Kimberly said as Amelia shook her head. They had stacked them in order as she finished them. "No- it's wrong."
"We can fix that together as we review them," Amelia said as she grabbed both of Kimberly's hands, trying to center her. Kimberly pulled away from her and then scrambled out of the bed and started frantically arranging the books. "Keep Thomas out- I don't think he'll be able to take this."
"Why would you say that?" Theo asked as Kimberly started creating different piles. "She's up and moving around. That's good."
"She's still not with us and this…this will just hurt him to see more," Amelia said as Theo nodded and he looked up to see Thomas standing in the doorway, the pain he was feeling evident on his face. Amelia turned around to see why Theo had stilled and she walked over to Thomas. "She wants to come back, but I can't pull her out of this. It's too important that we get this right."
"Why? Why is it so fucking important that we let her go through with it?" Thomas ground out as Theo glared over at him and for the first time in his life he met Theo on level footing. He had been pushed too far with this and was finally breaking. "You both know. What aren't you telling me?"
"You're the strongest cadet I've ever seen. It would only make sense that your soulmate would be the strongest prophetess we've ever seen. This- all of this- it's going to change our world as we know it. We can't disturb this," Amelia said as Thomas turned away from her and slammed his fists into the walls as he let out a scream. Kimberly stilled as she heard his anguish and then carefully picked her way through the notebooks.
"Tommy," Kimberly said as she grabbed both of his arms and stopped him from continuing to pummel the wall. "I will be back with you soon, I promise. Just hang on for a little bit longer."
"Please hurry," Thomas whispered as she reached up and pulled him down for a surprisingly passionate kiss. She then pulled away and went back to rearranging the notebooks. Thomas squeezed his eyes closed as Theo wrapped his arms around him and he desperately tried to think of a way to help Thomas to just hang on. Nothing came to mind- so he just held him and Thomas didn't push him away.
