Out There
Chapter 3
A day in September had changed Gil Grissom's life; he had been happier than he ever remembered and had felt himself to be in a constant state of simple contentment for weeks. Rarely, he experienced a moment of anxiety, briefly thinking the woman he loved would decide to leave him but then she would appear at his side, gently touch him, kiss him, smile against his skin. And his thought would disappear.
Looking at the slim white wand on the bathroom cabinet, he struggled to process what his eyes were seeing. Not in a bad way but in a way that appeared to defy logic yet he could not keep a smile from forming across his face.
A pregnancy was not planned. Years ago, they had tried for months before realizing they needed expert assistance—then that had not succeeded. By the end of round three of IVF, they needed an emotional break and what happened after that—his fault, his blundering apprehension and doubts—had been the beginning of their separation.
After all this time, softly he laughed, after all this time, at an age when both of them had dismissed thoughts of having children, before him was surprising evidence that they had created the beginning of—of a baby.
His fingers rubbed across his eyes before he checked the results again before leaving the bathroom.
He had been out of the bedroom for less than a minute yet Sara had managed to put a couple of pillows behind her head. Her face was as pale as the white pillow case; there were dark crescents under each eye. The trash can was still beside her. As he approached the bed, she closed her eyes.
"Hey," he said, "you want to see or you want me to tell you that's it is positive?" Sitting on the bed, he placed his hands on both sides of her head and leaned to kiss her. He felt as if his entire body was smiling.
After the kiss, she said, "I don't know how this happened."
He looked at her in amusement and then laughed. "We know how it happened—I lost count—or stopped counting." He laughed, saying, "After my butt got blistered, I stopped counting." Kissing her again as he held her face, he said, "I've already got a name for a girl—you can name a boy."
Sara tried to smile as she said, "Oh, Gil." Her voice quivered.
He crawled into bed, wrapped his arms around her, and held her tightly. He said, "I think we are both uncertain—surprised by this—and definitely need to—to see a doctor." He kissed the top of her head before continuing. "I'm happy about this—I hope you are—will be when you feel better. We never got this far, did we? All those injections—god, I was useless, wasn't I? And now," he tightened his hug and smiled as he said, "We'll work it out—whatever happens."
Sara sighed heavily before she whispered his name again. Her voice was stronger and did not quiver. Turning her head, she sought and found his lips, kissing him with surprising passion; her hips arched against his as she brought her long slim leg across his, sliding it up toward his belly with clear intentions.
With a simple movement, he shifted so he was above her. Her hands tugged at his shirt and, in the manner of lovers, both continued to kiss the other as clothes were removed in a surprising urgency. The trash can she'd been hugging disappeared off the bed.
When he met her eyes, the only thing that mattered in the whole world was satisfying the dark hunger he could see in her eyes. This was her desire, her demand and he responded.
He felt wave after wave of pleasure pulsing, grasping, gripping him as the woman he loved climaxed. Then he gave a muffled groan, held her tightly until they were both exhausted into a sweet lethargy.
…Sara had left the testing stick near the sink; she had never had one late period in her life time so she was reasonably sure the test would show as positive. All she could think about was the effect a pregnancy—and a baby—would have on her dearly loved Gil. He had lived on a boat for months; he was so excited to be on this research ship and had plans for another project as soon as this one finished.
Her mind quickly flipped from worry to one of giddiness; two grown adults having sex multiple times a day and neither gave a thought to birth control. Her hand covered her face as she suppressed a laugh that turned into a quiet sob. Pregnant at forty-four, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean—dear god, they had done so much trying for a baby and now, surprise! Another sob as she thought about another possibility. She might not be pregnant for long.
Then her husband returned, much more excited than she'd thought he would be, gentle and charming as he talked and held her. And in a way unique to him, he calmed her fear and managed to lift her mood.
In a blink, her emotions turned to desire, an intense craving for his physical body. Her body, already damp and warm, responded to her thoughts. He sensed her need, holding her, sliding his hand along the inside of her thigh. In a fever of desire, she touched every part of him that she could reach, stroking, feeling him pushing into her until hundreds of sweet pulsing shivers flowed throughout her body.
She heard his muffled exclamation of satisfaction, felt his muscles grow rigid and relax seconds later. When he stirred and met her eyes, she managed a small smile before asking, "I want to know more about the name you've already decided on for a daughter."
For two or three heartbeats, he did not move, then asked, "Are you all right?"
Sara laughed and the sound floated out of the bed as soft as a cloud before saying, "I'm better." Her finger traced around his left eye, along his nose, to touch his lips. "Thank you, Gil—for being you." Removing her finger from his lips, she kissed him.
