It was noon, lunchtime. Students gather in the school cafeteria to choose their meals from various food options. The cafeteria looked clean and orderly, with white tile lining the floor with rows of beautifully crafted wooden tables and benches.
At one table, Wulf sat with Rena. He had a tray of piping hot food but hadn't taken one bite yet.
He stared at his meal, three pieces of crispy fish, thin fries, a bowl of vanilla pudding, and a clear plastic container with ketchup. Not quite the healthiest items, but it was all certainly tasty to him, and he felt he should indulge himself after everything that happened last week.
He sighed, fidgeting with a fry in his hand out of boredom. He was waiting for Kat, where could she be? Surely, she didn't blow him off. And of course, the more he waited, the colder his food got.
After scanning the entire room, Rena looked at Wulf next to her, noticing his troubled expression. She put her arm across his upper back, planting her furry paw on his right shoulder.
"Wulf, what is wrong?" She asked.
Wulf blushed a bit, feeling her sudden touch on his shoulder. "Uh, well. It's nothing."
Rena knew he wasn't exactly being truthful. "Is it about Kat? She seems to be taking a bit of time."
He sighed again, then nodded. Rena brought her other arm around him to pull him into an embrace.
"Don't worry, Wulf. I'm sure she will be here soon." She reassured him.
His blush increased, and he slowly wrapped his arms around her waist to hug her back. However, a voice calling behind him interrupted him before he could finish embracing her.
"Wulf?" He craned his neck to see who it was.
It was Kat, holding her food tray and looking at the sight of the two embracing with a judging raised eyebrow. Wulf was surprised as Rena gently let go of him.
"Oh, Kat! You're here." He said, trying to regain composure.
"I see Rena is with you." She said getting closer.
Now near, Wulf was able to see her meal of choice. A steaming bowl of Tomato soup with a loaf of bread.
"Uh, yeah. Rena is with me of course." He glanced at Rena. "Is there a problem with that, Kat?"
Kat sighed. "Well, I said we should spend some quality time together. Not spend time together with Rena."
Kat's clear expression of sass caught him off-guard, and even Rena took notice. He raised his legs over the bench he was sitting on and turned his body, now completely facing Kat.
"Well, I'm sorry. I just feel comfortable with her at my side.". He explained, hoping Kat would take it easy.
She sighed. "Please, I just want to be with you. Don't you know you can store her in your Digivice?"
Wulf was a bit confused, only having a vague idea of what she meant. He unclipped his digivice from his belt and looked at it. Kat approached to look at it as well.
"See? It along with all Digivices have a storage system that allows a Digimon to transfer their data and essence into it, essentially a mini home for them." She explained as everything in Wulf's mind clicked together.
Although it now made sense to Wulf, he still wasn't sure if he should do it. He loved being near Rena and felt it would be disrespectful to just cast aside into his digivice.
However, Rena herself decided to chime in, turning to face Kat as well as placing her hand on Wulf's shoulder. "It's quite alright, Wulf. I'm ok with being stored on your digivice for now. You've wanted this moment, and I don't want it to be ruined for you."
But that was just it for him, he wasn't very sure he wanted this anymore. If Kat was going to act like this and demand Rena be stored away as if she didn't matter, then Kat just wasn't someone he wanted to be with right now. Especially since he knew he loved Rena way more than he did Kat.
"No, Kat. I'm sorry, but I would just like for Rena to be with us." He pleaded, refusing to change his mind.
With a pout, Kat rolled her eyes, wishing Wulf wasn't doing this. She marched to the end of the table on his right and planted her tray down, then turned to look down at Wulf.
"I'm sorry, I just want to be alone with you, and I thought you would've wanted it as well. What, do you just need her at your side 24/7? She's just a Digimon, not your caretaker." She powerfully stated as she crossed her arms.
Wulf just couldn't believe what he just heard. He had never heard anything like this out of Kat's mouth before. He didn't just feel offended for himself but was primarily offended at how she spoke about Rena.
Rena stood up, maintaining a stern look at Kat. "Kat, that's not a very nice thing to say.".
Suddenly, Wulf stood straight up, glaring at Kat. Something inside him snapped something that was practically bottled up for months.
"I love Rena, she is wonderful, cares for me, and understands me. Don't you dare speak about her in that way?" He told her, asserting an attitude Kat had never seen from him before.
"Kat, we have been dating since the beginning of the year. Despite this, we have barely done anything together, and you always hang out with your friends more than me. I understand you like your friends, but you're my girlfriend, and I genuinely used to love you, but we never did anything I wanted to do with you until now." He explained more, his deep blue eyes penetrating her own brown eyes.
Kat stood in silence processing the information bombarded on her. Then, she focused on one crucial bit uttered by Wulf.
"Used to?" A disappointed and even slightly angered look emerged on her face.
She glared at Wulf herself as his face practically started to melt and his glare died down. He sighed as his shoulders slumped over looking at the tiled floor.
"I'm sorry, Kat. I just- "Kat broke eye contact with him and grabbed her tray, leaving him in the dust as she turned around and walked away. She dumped her bowl of soup and bread into a trash can and passed through a large exit door.
Wulf stood there shocked and speechless, the weight of what he had just done crashing down on him. Rena stood stunned as well, then slowly walked up to Wulf from behind to comfort him.
As he felt Rena wrap her arms around him from behind, he couldn't help but feel but slight comfort in her presence. But unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough as he still felt a pit in his heart open over what had just happened.
He turned his body and hugged Rena tightly, smushing his cheek against her soft and pretty face. Rena tried reassuring him, her beautiful and gentle voice ringing pleasantly through his ears.
"Wulf, I'm sorry. It's going to be okay, I'm here for you." She whispered.
He just hugged her tighter, trying to let his desire for her fill the pit in his heart. It just wasn't quite enough, however, sighing as he noticed a few students sitting and eating craning their necks to glance at him and Rena.
"Rena, I love you so much. Thank you so much for being at my side." He slowly let go of Rena, looking into her eyes. "You're wonderful. I think I need to be alone, at least for a moment."
"I understand, I'll wait here and watch over your meal." She said, letting go of him as well.
Wulf managed a slight smile at her, before going to head for the bathroom. As soon as his face left her eye contact, his smile faded.
Walking between rows of tables and benches, he reached a small hall for two bathrooms, heading right into the men's restroom.
Luckily, it seemed empty for now, and despite being a bathroom, it was as clean as the cafeteria. Wulf entered a stall and pressed his hands against the wall, staring straight down into the bowl of the toilet below him.
He just couldn't believe what had just happened. Was it his fault? Should he not have said that? He did feel bad for Kat, but a part of him was also trying to inform him that perhaps he had a point and that she had been acting wrongly in their relationship.
Just thinking of that word prompted him to close his eyes and sigh. Relationship, something that he knew was no longer happening between him and Kat. With that outburst, he knew it was over between him and her.
Just as he started to feel depressed over this, he started to imagine the one who truly cared for him. His mind began to think about Rena, how beautiful and amazing she was, and how much he loved her.
A small part of him still couldn't believe he had a crush on her like this. But he truly didn't care, Rena was a beautiful girl and he loved her.
Then he thought about it. It was upsetting to him what had happened just now with Kat, but with how rough their relationship was, perhaps it was for the best that it was now over. Though he did wish the end went better than how it did.
And of course, now that he wasn't with Kat anymore, there wasn't anyone standing between him and Rena.
He knew he wasn't going to try asking her out now, in fact, he wasn't sure if he should ever do that. But at least she could now be the one girl he always had on his mind now. She truly was one of a kind to him.
He took his hands off the wall and left the stall, passing by someone who entered and was washing their hands.
Exiting the bathroom, he walked over to Rena, who turned her head to see him approaching. Her ears perked up and she stood up off the bench.
Before she could speak, Wulf abruptly hugged her tight again. He then looked into her eyes.
"You are so wonderful, Rena." He smirked.
"Thank you, Wulf. You are very kind." Her smile spreading across her snout was adorable to him, and he blushed in response.
As he let go of her, Rena unveiled a small slip of paper in her hand. Wulf looked down at it curiously.
"What's that?" He asked.
"While you were in the bathroom, two boys approached me and asked me if I wanted to try 'Digimon Fighting'. Of course, I know a lot about fighting Digimon, but what they described sounded rather interesting. I accepted their offer, and they wrote something onto this paper." She handed it to him.
Unraveling the pure white paper, Wulf read out loud the contents written in jet-black ink. "3:00 PM, after school ends. CR-4 2F."
Rena put her hands on her hips. "What could those letters and numbers mean?"
Wulf thought to himself, putting the paper in his pocket. "Well, 2F means the second floor of the facility. I believe CR means Community Room, which are rooms that house clubs formed by students. So, CR-4 means the fourth numbered Community Room."
With the text decoded, Wulf nodded at Rena. "I'm more than happy to try this out with you."
"I also believed that it would perhaps help get your mind off things," Rena told him.
"Aw, don't worry Rena. Just being together with you helps me with that." She chuckled upon hearing this. She looked at Wulf's tray, still sitting at the table.
"You might want to eat your food, you deserve a good meal, Wulf." He went back to his seat and sat back down with Rena. As he began to dig into his food, he felt curious about what would happen in the community room later. What could be so interesting about it? For now, though, he was focused on enjoying his food.
