A/N Howdy folks! Got another chapter for you, but it will be two weeks before the next chapter will be posted. I'm going with my Girl Scout group to Savannah, GA for the week! My beta is a rock star powering through laryngitis to get this chapter finished! She is amazing.
So the first paragraph is the mental image I had in my head as I started this "little" story. I do hope you enjoy, it's one of my favorite chapters! Also bonus points to whoever knows the little cameo I have in here!
Felicity quickly pulled her hand away from Moira, picked up the check and proceeded to tear it into pieces. She opened and closed her mouth a few times before she said, "I'm sure in that dossier that you have on me it shows that my father walked out on my mom when I was a kid." She paused for a second to think of the right way to say this. "What this baby needs is a present father figure, but only if that is something that Oliver wants to do. I'm not going to force him to be a part of his child's life but it will be his decision and his decision alone!" Felicity's face lost some of its anger. "I believe that you think what you are doing is protecting Oliver, but he also has to take responsibility for his actions just as I have to. This is not something that our parents can "fix" for us! I have hopes and dreams that this child is not going to make easy, but I know that I will achieve them. You are right about one thing though, there is nothing that I won't do to make sure this kid has the best future possible even if it means that I have to turn down two million dollars to do it." With that she handed Moira back the torn-up check, and stood up. "I think I'm going to wait for Oliver." She didn't get a chance to finish her sentence because the front door opened and a young woman's voice called out.
"Mom, why did Ollie have to come pick me up? You know how annoying it is hearing all my friends say how hot he is!" Oliver's laughter followed and filled the foyer.
Felicity had walked towards the sound of Oliver's voice and the two met at the entrance to the drawing room, "Hey," She said shyly, twisting her hands nervously.
"Hey," he replied. "Felicity, I'd like you to meet my little annoying sister Thea." Felicity smiled at the girl who looked to be about twelve. "Thea this is my friend Felicity." With the introductions out of the way he ignored his sister and addressed Felicity. "You want to go and talk up in my room?" Felicity nodded and Oliver led her away.
Thea looked at them as they walked off a puzzled expression on her face. "Hey Mom, who's the goth chick that Oliver went with?"
Ignoring the question Moira asked her daughter, "Do you have any homework?"
"Mom," she sounded so put upon, "It's the last week of school! Of course I don't." She sighed, "I'm going to see if Raisa has any good snacks out." Dropping her backpack in the middle of the floor Thea wandered off towards the kitchen.
Moira sighed as she picked up Thea's backpack and moved back into the drawing room to gather up the dossier and the pieces of the check and took everything back into her office. She poured some of her good whisky and took a sip relishing the taste. Her meeting with Ms. Smoak hadn't gone to plan, but Moira did like how she had held her ground. She admired a woman who had gumption. As of right now she would see where this took them, but she was sure that a cocktail waitress's daughter wouldn't turn down five million dollars if things started to go bad. After all you couldn't put a price on your children's or grandchildren's futures.
***ARROW***
Upstairs Oliver got Felicity settled in his room leading her to his desk chair while he had a seat on the end of his bed. He was nervous about seeing her in person for the first time since they had found out about the pregnancy. After talking to his mom last week, he had felt better, but he knew that once his dad found out he was a dead man walking and his dad was due back in town the next day. Putting that thought out of his mind he focused his attention on Felicity, and tried to be a good host. "Do you want something to eat? Raisa, our housekeeper, is an excellent cook."
Felicity was sitting quietly and nervously gnawing on her cuticle, "I think that I'm too nervous to eat. Plus, your mom already asked."
Oliver nodded not knowing what to say next, so they both sat there quietly for a while, neither knowing how to start the conversation that they needed to have.
"So," Felicity finally broke the silence, "Do you want to be involved in this kids' life? We can do all sorts of planning and documents and legal crap and bribes, but it all boils down to do you want to be involved in our child's life."
Her comment about bribes confused him, but he had been thinking about this answer from the moment that Felicity had called him until now. He opened his mouth to reply, but Felicity held up her hand and stopped him from talking, "Before you say anything, I'm going to tell you what I told your mom. When I was a kid my dad left. I know from first-hand experience how hard it is to grow up without a dad there. I would like you to be a part of our child's life, but I'm not going to force you to be part of it. My mom and I are proof that our kid can be raised just by me and have it turn out just fine. Well maybe not just fine, a friend did say that I have daddy issues." She stopped herself mid-ramble and took a deep breath. "I know that your mom wants to throw some money at me and make us go away, but I'm not like that."
"Wait," Oliver said confused, "When did Mom try to give you money?"
Felicity cocked her head and looked at him, "Did you not know that Moira talked to me before you got here and offered me two million dollars to tell you that I had a miscarriage?"
Oliver's mouth fell open in shock. He had not known that! Standing up he started to make his way towards the door. Felicity also stood up and gently placed a hand on his arm. "Wait, we need to have this conversation first and I need to know your decision. Then you can go and talk to your mom after I leave, because honestly, she scares the crap out of me. And not too many people scare me. Growing up in Vegas you get to know a lot of different people and I'm babbling, again." She snapped her mouth shut and sat back down.
With a sigh Oliver did the same. He reached out and took her hand and looked into her eyes, "I promise you that I didn't ask my mom to do that."
After looking into his eyes for a second, she said, "I believe you. Now to the question at the center of all this. Do you want to be a dad to our kid or not?" She took her hand back and sat back in the chair watching him like a hawk.
He took a deep breath, "I don't know if I told you about my best friend Tommy Merlyn." Felicity looked puzzled. "I realized from a young age that his dad was a horrible dad and I always told myself that when I did have kids that I wanted to be a better dad than that. If I took the easy path and told you that I don't want to have anything to do with our baby except for giving you money I would be acting just like Mr. Merlyn. So yes, I do want to be involved in our child's life." It felt like a load of bricks had been lifted from his shoulders admitting that out loud. He smiled and repeated himself, "I want to be a good dad to our kid."
A smile grew on Felicity's face, and she let out a huge sigh of relief, "I am so glad you said that. I kept imagining myself as my mom in sky high heels and tight dresses working the tables to support our kid like she did. And by tables, I mean she is a cocktail waitress not a stripper or anything, not that there is anything wrong with being a stripper. Those people have to earn a living too! Oh, would you please stop me!"
Oliver grinned, "I think it's cute." She blushed at the compliment.
"So, now that that has been decided. Here are some of things that I will not change for this kid or for you. First of all, I will not be dropping out of MIT, I have a full ride scholarship that I worked my butt off to achieve and I will need that education to help to provide for us in the future." She waited for him to acknowledge what she had said.
"Okay, that's understandable."
"Second, I don't want us to get married just because we are having a kid together. If we start dating and you desperately want to get married we can talk about it then." Felicity looked very determined.
Oliver nodded, "So," he paused, "Right now, I'm kinda dating someone."
Felicity nodded, "I know, after the whole," She made several motions with her hands that Oliver couldn't quite figure out. "My roommate Linda, told me who exactly you were and I may have done a little research on your family and that included your on and off again relationship with Laurel Lance."
"Just so you don't think I'm a complete douchebag, we were on a break and not dating when we slept together."
"That's between you and her, but I am glad that I wasn't party to you cheating. Right now, we are two people who will soon have a child in common and are working to become friends."
That made a few things clearer to Oliver, "Are there any more questions?" Felicity sighed, looking like she wasn't sure how to say what she wanted to next. Oliver rubbed the back of his head and said, "Let me guess, my arrests?" Felicity nodded. Oliver looked down at the floor trying to put into words what he was thinking. "I know that I've done some pretty messed up things."
"I think peeing on a cop would have to be my favorite," Felicity said dryly, and then added with a straight face. "Please don't teach our kid to do that."
Oliver felt ashamed for the stupid stunts that he had pulled, "I'm going to try my best not to do anymore dumb stuff like that. I can't promise I won't ever make a mistake again, but I am going to put in the effort. I need to be better, and I have to set a good example for the baby."
Felicity nodded, "Thank you, but I do have to say that that paparazzi kinda deserved to be hit, but that's not what we're going to teach our child."
Nodding in understanding and relief that Felicity hadn't told him that he was beyond help Oliver asked, "Anything else?"
"Not that I can't think of right now, but I'm sure a few will pop up." Felicity replied. "Do you have any questions or things you won't change for me?"
"Maybe, but right now I can't think of anything." Oliver's phone chirped in his pocket. Pulling it out it he saw that it was a text from Thea. He slipped the phone back into his pocket, "That was my sister letting us know that supper is almost ready. Before we go down there let me warn you, Thea is a typical twelve-year-old spoiled brat. So, don't be surprised if you get hit by a thousand and one questions. And no, I haven't told her about the baby."
"That raises another question. Do you want to be telling people? And if you do, what do you want to tell them?" Felicity asked.
"I don't know, do you want to tell anyone?"
"The only people who I've told is my roommate and you." Felicity shook her head, "Well actually my roommate told me that I was pregnant. First, because she figured it out before I did, and she was the one to read me the pregnancy test. I was too nervous." She stopped her babble there.
He smiled at her rambling, and answered with "The only person I've told is my mom but I don't know who she has told. My dad's going to kill me after he finds out, so we may have had this talk for no reason at all."
Felicity laughed, "I'm sure that your dad won't kill you." She thought for a few minutes, "Maybe we only tell family and if you want, any close friends."
Oliver's phone dinged, it was Thea again letting him know they were waiting for them. Oliver stood and offered Felicity his hand, "It's time for supper. And I told Raisa no nuts."
"You remembered!" Felicity said happily as she accepted his hand up and they made their way downstairs to the dining room. The table had been set for four places, with Moira seated at the head of the table with Thea on her left. Oliver sat in the chair closest to his mom leaving Felicity the chair beside him.
Everyone sat quietly as Raisa served the drinks, wine for Moira and Oliver, water for Felicity and Thea. She then brought out the serving platters of food before leaving the dining room.
"So, Ollie" Thea started out as she shoved a forkful of salad in her mouth. "Who's the gothic chick?"
"Thea!" Moira reprimanded, her voice sharp. "I didn't raise you in a barn, chew, swallow, then talk. Also, please remember your manners."
"Sorry Mother," she said none too convincingly as she rolled her eyes. Then looking at Felicity, "Greetings mysterious stranger, perchance you could inform me of your Christian name."
"Really Thea?" Oliver asked dryly, "I already introduced her to you earlier." While Moira merely shook her head.
"It's Felicity," Felicity answered with a smile. She then froze and shoved a bite of salad into her mouth. Oliver bit back a smile realizing that Felicity wanted to say more, but was hiding behind food.
"So, Felicity," Thea started again her eyes not leaving her prey. "Why are you dining with us tonight?" Felicity's eyes shot to Oliver, and Oliver was trying his hardest not to grown out loud. "Well?" She asked impatiently.
Oliver started to speak when Felicity beat him to it, "Well, you're going to be an aunt. Can you pass me the green beans they look delicious."
"What?" Thea screeched.
While Moira turned her disapproving glare on Oliver, "Couldn't you have come up with a better way to announce it?" But Oliver ignored her and was staring at Felicity open mouthed.
Felicity calmly pushed her chair back and quickly stood up, "Could you point me," was as far as she got before her eyes rolled back and she passed out. It was only Oliver's quick reflexes that kept her from toppling into the floor.
Moira stood up and took charge of the situation. "Oliver bring her to the sitting room, I'm calling the doctor."
Oliver scooped her up and quickly took her to the sitting room where he laid her down on a couch and propped her feet up. Not knowing what else to do and worried that she was really sick or that something was happening with the baby, he squatted beside her and held her hand. Moira walked in holding her phone, "Dr. Hank will be here shortly."
"Did I kill her?" Thea's voice quivered as she asked the question. Oliver and Moira turned to see her standing in the corner of the room arms her hugged around herself with tears streaming down her cheeks.
Moira quickly walked over to her youngest and enveloped her in a hug. "No darling. Whatever is going on, it isn't your fault."
A quiet moan came from the couch, and Oliver refocused his attention to Felicity. Her eyes blinked open and she slowly looked around. Then she looked at Oliver, "Frack, I fainted, didn't I?"
"Yes." Oliver answered simply.
She squeezed his hand, "Help me sit up, will you?"
His eyes opened in alarm, "Stay laying down, the doctor is on the way."
Felicity shot him a look, "I can't afford a house call doctor." Seeing the look of panic on his face she quick assured him, "Don't worry I'll see a baby doctor when I get to Vegas. I think I'm still on my mom's insurance."
Oliver looked over at his mom who was moving back toward the couch and glared at her for making Felicity think that she had to pay for everything. "This is non-negotiable, you passed out. It could be something serious to either you or the baby."
Fire flared in Felicity's eyes, "Non-negotiable? You don't tell me what to do. This is my body so I'm in charge." She then attempted to sit up, but quickly laid back down when she got dizzy and draped the hand that Oliver had been holding over her eyes.
Moira stepped in before the argument could start up in earnest. "Ms. Smoak, Dr. Hank is on retainer so we aren't paying anymore for him to come by, so don't worry about the billing, and while we can't make you get checked out I think it would make everybody here feel better." She paused, "With that in mind are you okay with getting checked out by Dr. Hank?"
"Yes, Mrs. Queen," came the quiet reply.
"Thank you, and please call me Moira."
Felicity moved her hand surprised, she started to answer, but the ringing of the doorbell interrupted, and Moira left to get the door. Oliver stood and moved around to the back of the couch while Thea found a seat where she was out of the way, but could still be part of everything that was going on. A second later Moira and a gentleman in his mid-thirties carrying a large case walked in.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Hank," he addressed the room, then walking over to Felicity he said. "You must be my patient."
"That would be me," she said with a small wave. "Felicity Smoak."
"Nice to meet you Felicity Smoak. Is it ok to examine you and talk about medical information with the people in the room or would you be more comfortable if they leave?"
Oliver started to object to the thought of leaving, but was quickly silenced by a glare from Felicity as she said. "I guess it's ok."
"If at any point you change your mind and feel uncomfortable or want to discuss something in private just let me know and we'll make that happen, okay?" Dr. Hank said earnestly as he sat down beside her in a chair that Thea had pulled up for him. Felicity nodded. "Let's get some information first. Mrs. Queen said that you are expecting and just passed out."
"We were at dinner and I stood up quickly and then the next thing I knew I was waking up on this couch." Felicity said. "And then when I tried to sit up a few minutes ago I started to get dizzy again."
Dr. Hank took off the stethoscope he wore around his neck. "I'm going to check your vitals really quick." He then proceeded to listen to her heart, take her blood pressure, and checked her respirations. "Your blood pressure looks to be a little bit low, is it ok to check your blood glucose levels? I'm going to have to prick your finger for that one."
Felicity grimaced, "Go ahead."
"Don't worry it's just a tiny prick and will be over before you know it. So, is this your first baby?"
"Yeah," She laughed "I'm, ouch!' She yelped as he pricked her finger.
"Sorry," he then took the finger and squeezed a drop of blood out onto a test strip the little machine beeped a few times. Looking at the results he said, "So it's my professional diagnosis that both your glucose level and blood pressure are low. To combat that you need to eat and drink regularly. When was the last time that you ate anything?"
Felicity looked sheepish, "Maybe this morning? I've been nervous about flying out here to see Oliver and that combined with my morning sickness, which doesn't just happen in the morning, contrary to popular belief, I haven't been able to eat very well today. Then I fainted before I could really eat anything at supper which looked really good, but now I'm sure I've ruined."
Dr. Hank chuckled, "Try ginger chews to help with the nausea. Also having something like crackers and ginger ale on your nightstand. So as soon as you wake up try a few crackers and a few sips of ginger ale. A lot of women said that helps keep the sickness manageable."
"Thank you," Felicity said glad to get some more information.
"I also have a portable ultrasound machine here; would you like to see if we can see the baby or at least get to hear the heartbeat?" Dr. Hank offered.
"Yes!" Felicity said excitedly.
"How far along do you think you are?"
Felicity snorted a laugh, "I know exactly when the baby was conceived, it's been eight weeks."
"Okay. Now I need you to be honest about this question. How full is your bladder? The reason I ask is a full bladder this early in pregnancy makes finding the uterus easier." As Dr. Hank was speaking he was setting up his equipment on the table beside the couch that Felicity was still reclined on.
Felicity's cheeks flushed a bit, "The reason I stood up was I needed to go to the bathroom, so yep got a full bladder."
"Excellent, I'm going to pull your shirt up a bit and the waistband of your pants down. Is that okay?" Felicity nodded. "This might be a bit cool," the doctor said as he squirted gel on her lower abdomen. By then Thea and Moira had come around to the back of the couch to stand with Oliver so that they could also see the screen of the ultrasound machine on the table.
"Now if you were at an OB/GYN's office they would be doing a transvaginal ultrasound as an abdominal ultrasound is less conclusive, but we should be able to at least hear the baby's heartbeat." Dr. Hank said as he slowly moved the wand around Felicity's lower abdomen.
"I don't see anything," Thea complained.
"Well at this early in development if we do see the baby it won't really look like a baby, but more like a bean. Give it a few more weeks to start looking more baby like." Hank hummed then grinned, "There is it!" Oliver leaned in and he thought he could make out a bean like shape. It was hard to believe that one day that would be an actual baby, his baby. "Okay family, would you like to hear the heartbeat?"
Several voices all said yes at one, with a chuckle at the anxious family Dr. Hank switched a button and a quick whoosh-whoosh noise filled the air.
"Should it be that fast?" Oliver asked concerned.
Moira laid a hand on Oliver's arm, "Babies hearts beat much faster than adults."
Dr. Hank nodded, "Mrs. Queen is correct, and everything looks and sounds great." He took the wand off Felicity's stomach, and started to clean the gel off. "Would anybody like pictures?" He received several confirmations, and nodded pushing a few buttons. "So, I'd follow up with your regular OB/GYN to get a more precise due date. I would give you one but every time I try I am abysmally wrong." He handed the four pictures of the ultrasound he had printed off to Felicity and quickly packed his equipment up. "Bring her some food to eat and Felicity should be just fine in about thirty minutes." He looked at Felicity, "Congratulations and it was a pleasure meeting you!" He picked up his things and made his way out of the room with Moira escorting him.
"Thanks Doc," Felicity called as she started to sit up and Oliver hurried over to help her get into a sitting position, and took a seat beside her. Thea stood in front of the two, looking sheepish.
"I'm sorry I acted the way I did, and thanks for letting me stay and see the baby." Thea said.
Felicity smiled at the girl, "I'm sorry I blurted it out the way I did. It has to be a shock to you."
"Like totally," she started to say more when Moira appeared in the doorway.
"Thea, can you come help me please?"
"But Mom!" Thea protested, gesturing towards Felicity.
Moira gave her daughter a 'you will obey me now' look, one that Oliver was very familiar with and with a huff Thea left leaving Oliver and Felicity alone. Felicity was still staring at the ultrasound pictures.
"How are you feeling now?" Oliver asked gently.
"Weird," she chuckled. "Like, I knew I was pregnant but to hear and see the baby." A tear slid down her face, "It make it so much more real."
"Yeah," Oliver said hoarsely as he tried not to get choked up. "I still wasn't sure if I wanted to be a dad or not, but that," he pointed at the pictures. "Changes everything." He turned to Felicity, sincerity shining in his eyes, "I promise to do everything that I can to be the best dad that I can be to that little one."
Felicity nodded, "It's not going to be easy. I mean we don't even really know each other that well at all. And we come from completely different ends of the socioeconomic scale."
Oliver smiled, "I don't even know what that last word means, but we'll find a way to at least be friends and maybe something more."
"It's a good thing you're cute." Felicity said dryly.
Oliver was momentarily taken aback because that was the same thing that Laurel had told him a week ago, and he had some hard decisions to make concerning his girlfriend. "Dinner!" Thea called as she brought in two plates, their mother following behind her daughter with two trays to place the food on.
"I thought it would be easier to bring you a plate in here so that way you don't have to come back to the dining room." Moira explained as they set the trays for Oliver and Felicity. "I'll send Thea back with dessert and drinks."
"Thank you, Mrs." Felicity stopped herself when Moira raised a perfectly maintained eyebrow, "Sorry, thank you Moira. And not just for supper, but for bringing Dr. Hank in."
Moira nodded, "And thank you for including me in my grandchild's first check-up, now Thea and I will be in the kitchen if you need us." She gave a slight smile and retired to the kitchen. Thea came in a second later with two plates of dessert and their drinks. She set them down then gave them a quick grin and scurried out.
"While this looks and smells delicious, I really need to pee," Felicity said as she slowly stood up. "Where is the bathroom?"
"Through that door and to the right," Oliver said as he pointed at the door at the far end of the room. "Did you want any help or are you okay?"
"I'm good, thanks. I'll holler if I need any help." Felicity said as she hurriedly made her way to the restroom.
Oliver nibbled at his food while he waited for Felicity to return, but thoughts of Laurel were in his head. He really needed to decide how important she was to him and either break up with her or as she was pushing him to do, start looking at apartments together. It was time, as Tommy would say, time to shit or get off the toilet.
A/N: Let me know what you think!
