Hi guys! Welcome to another one shot story! Originally, I was gonna post it on Father's Day since we all love daddy Edward here, but I had a lot going that I didn't have to get this done before posting it. Plus, I didn't know if people are going to be spending time on Father's Day so I decided to hold it off. But this story was only right that we honor him with a special tribute to him and Renesmee who will be in this story along with Jacob. A heads up before you read this in case you're not comfortable reading this. Bella is part of the story but… not in the usual way. She's in it but… look I'm just warning you incase you can't handle it. This is a story about Edward and Renesmee. So you have been warned. I hope you guys like this story. Oh! And there's no POV for this story for once. I'm narrating it all if you get what I mean.
Edward, a police detective, is hoping to solve a case that has been left unsolved and will not rest until then. His actions however is neglecting him from his actual duties. Will someone be able to remind him of what's important?
It was a quiet evening here in Forks, Washington, if you count the sound of pouring rain. After all, the city is known to be the coldest and wettest part of Washington. The population is around four thousand people live here which was why you don't see many out at night except for a young white, blonde women who was walking across the bridge carrying her umbrella over her head from the drizzle as she just needs to get to town to pick up some groceries.
She was on her phone and didn't pay attention behind her when he a car came out so fast, that it didn't honked when it skidded towards the woman who turned around but was too late when the car made impact causing her body to flew into the windshield and fell to the ground, dropping her things.
No sound was made other the person trying to reach out to the woman on the other end of the line along with the pouring rain. No one was around other than the motionless woman and driver of the car, who put it in reverse and drove around the woman, not looking back as if nothing as happened while the woman laid dead, blood coming from her.
Meanwhile, in the neighborhood in Eclipse Street, a light blue single family home that consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room along with a garage and nice backyard owned by Edward Cullen had only one light on inside.
Edward Cullen is the police detective of Forks. He has been on the force since being in his twenties and has done nothing but hard work to move up in the ranks to become a police detective. His skills and deductions, and catching criminals has earned a reputation to being the best on the force. What he's proud of the most is his reason for doing it and that's his family.
He married Bella Swan, his high school sweetheart right after they graduated and she has been Edward's biggest supporter. And if that wasn't enough, they had a beautiful daughter together, Renesmee who is seven years old now and Edward's pride and joy.
Another person also lives with the Cullens right now, a sixteen year old boy named Jacob Black. Jacob's mother was a friend of Bella's and both she and her husband had to work overseas for the year. So because of it, they decided to let Jacob live with the Cullens posing as his guardians as he transfers over to Forks High for his junior year where he will stay for the year until he moves back.
Jacob adapted easily living with the Cullens. They get along great but the person who likes the most is Renesmee as the two developed a close relationship like brother and sister. She would even call Jacob her big brother. Jacob's school life treated him well too. He made some friends and hangs out with them and his school work is no laughing matter as he gets all As and Bs in class, though he's not what he considers himself an honor student.
Inside the Cullen resident, Jacob and Renesmee were sitting in the living room, watching TV on a Friday evening. As Renesmee's favorite show was on, Edward comes into the room with a tray of three steamy mugs of hot chocolate as he sat down on the couch and set the tray down.
"Renesmee, here." He offered as he held out a personalize pink mug for his daughter.
Renesmee got his attention as she saw the mug. "Looks good! Thanks daddy!" She smiled as she blew in her mug before taking a sip.
"And here's one for you, Jacob." Edward said, offering a green mug to him.
"Thanks." Jacob smiled as accept his green mug.
"It's the least I could do." Edward smiled as he picked up his personalized blue mug. "When I got married, I promised Renesmee's mom that no matter what, I would always make the beverages at the house." He looked at his mug as he sighed. "It's become a bit of a habit since I'm always busy on the force." He chuckled.
"Good batch." Renesmee said happily after drinking her hot chocolate as Jacob admired Edward the kind of man he is. Even when he's busy on the force, whether it's cracking down a case or catching criminals, Edward shows to be a good father and husband to his family.
Edward smiled at his angel as he turned to Jacob. "Drink up while it's still hot." He said.
"Smells great." Jacob said as he took a sip.
"Hey daddy," Renesmee said as she got up and walked towards him. "Will you read to me?" She asked as she had book in her hands.
"Sure, which book you got there?" Edward smiled.
"This one." Renesmee held out a book that appears to show a Disney princess of Cinderella on the cover. But before Edward could make out what it reads, his phone started ringing.
"Just a second." Edward sighed as he pulled out his phone. "This is Cullen here." He answered as Jacob and Renesmee watched him worriedly since they knew what it means when someone calls Edward at this late at night. "You what?!" He responded in outrage. He looked at his daughter as his expression softens before he sighs. "Okay, I'm on my way." Edward said before he hung up.
Renesmee watches as Edward got up and grabbed his jacket.
"Sorry, I gotta work." Edward said, unfortunately. "I might not make it back tonight."
"Yeah, I understand." Jacob said as Edward walks out the front door. This was not new to him. He's used to it by now.
"Have a good day." Renesmee said as she sadly watches her father closed the door behind him. She's used to this all the time. She's used to her father leaving like this. This system has always been a routine for Renesmee ever since.
The rain was still active as the police cruiser was moving with Edward by the wheel and by his side was his partner, Emmett McCarthy. Emmett is a transferred detective from Tacoma. And although Emmett is quite the jokester, even with jokes that are not appropriate to children, he takes the job seriously when it matters the most and it thanks to Edward who trained Emmett into being a proper detective… most of the time.
"A hit and run near La Push, huh." Emmett said when they heard the call and are now coming over to see what happened and hopefully the victim is okay. That's when Emmett realized something. "Oh damn, now that I think about it, your wife passed away in a car accident too, didn't she." He said as he turned to Edward.
Edward was focusing on the road through the rain, but his hands were gripping the wheel so tight from what Emmett said.
Two years ago, Bella was on her way over to pick up Renesmee from preschool. She was walking her way over there when suddenly she was killed in a hit and run incident. When word got to Edward of what happened to her, he was shocked and sad as he arrived at the scene where Bella died, but mostly angry at how the person would just hit his wife and drove off without an ounce of concern or owning up to his or her actions. When Bella was laid to rest, Edward was determined to put whoever did this to Bella would not only be behind bars, but will pay for their actions and bring his wife justice.
The problem was that because no one was around to witness it other than Bella and the driver, there were no clues to identify who it was nor the vehicle that was involved. Because of it, there was nothing to go further, but the case was still open in case something comes up. Still, Edward was not going to give up on this case, even if he had to do this by himself. As he works at the station, he also spends time investigating on the hit and run incident trying to find clues of the perpetrator responsible for his wife's death. Unfortunately for Edward, for the last two years, Edward's progress has come empty handed. But he's not stopping, not until he brings justice for Bella.
Sure, his time with work and the case causes him to leave Renesmee alone at home a lot but Mrs. Cope, their next door neighbor looks after her. That was before Jacob came to live with them. For a guy Jacob's age, he sure is mature. Even not minding looking after his daughter at night while Edward works that includes sacrificing time with his friends from school. As for Renesmee, Edward couldn't bare seeing his daughter without her mother. Nor could he tell her about the hit and run other than explaining to her that her Bella died in an accident.
"Yeah, she was." Edward answered. "Who knows, maybe it's the same person that caused this one. Let's find out." He said as he drove the two of them to the destination of the scene, hoping Edward could find clues to the murder of his wife.
It was Saturday morning in the Cullen house, and Jacob was in the kitchen preparing a lunch meal for Renesmee. Despite not having any experience in the kitchen, he was able to prepare meals pretty well.
Jacob was cutting the skin of the apple when something sliced through his skin.
"Ah!" Jacob hissed as he sat his knife down on the counter and looked at his finger. Blood was slowly oozing from the cut he accidently made. I can cook, but I can't handle tools. Ironic. He thought as he looked around to find the first aid kit. That is if he's able to find it.
Jacob looked around the living room to see if there's one lying around. Renesmee came downstairs and saw Jacob opening up a cabinet.
"Huh, what's wrong big bro?" She asked worriedly.
"Nothing, I just need some first aid. That's all." Jacob said as he found a white tin. However, when he opened the lid, there was no first aid or even a band-aid. Just some markers, pens and glue and other office supplies you would need. But there was one object in the tin that caught his eye. "Huh?" Jacob picked up what appeared to be a photo. As he examined it, it shows a scenery which appears to be a beach and there in the center was Edward and his daughter sitting on a blanket. The person next to Edward was a woman with long brunette hair who appears to look similar to Renesmee having the same hair style as hers, almost like seeing an older version of Renesmee.
"Oh! That's a picture of mom!" Renesmee exclaimed when she saw the photo and Edward handed it to her to see. "It's from our day at La Push Beach. This is where it went." She said, happily.
"Did you lose it?" Jacob asked as he looked at the photo of Renesmee and her parents together. Renesmee's face then went sad as she shook her head.
"Uh-uh," She said. "It's just one day, dad took mom's pictures and put them all away."
"Really?" Jacob said, having a confused look. It seems odd for a husband to put away the memories of his wife, especially from their daughter.
"It was after the car accident, when she died." Renesmee said, causing Jacob to be taken by surprised as it would explain it. Renesmee once told Jacob and his friends that her mother passed away in a car accident and it was sad to hear about it.
When Jacob met Renesmee, she was once quiet and shy, and would just watch TV or read books. Once Jacob invited Renesmee over with his friends and they all played with her, she started warming up to Jacob hence the brother and sister relationship.
"It's sad." Renesmee admitted. "But I don't know much more than that because daddy never talks about it." That's when Renesmee became nervous as she looks at Jacob. "What do you think? Can I keep this picture without daddy getting mad at me?" She asked.
Jacob smiled as he held out his hand. "How about I ask him for you?" He said causing Renesmee to gasp as she nodded her head eagerly.
"Thank you!" She exclaimed as she gave Jacob a hug which he returned. Afterwards, Renesmee helps Jacob find the first aid kit and offers to put the band-aid on his finger.
"I feel bad." Renesmee said after she got the band-aid secure around Jacob's cut. "Daddy's been sad since he lost mom."
"I know." Jacob sighed as he felt bad for Edward, seeing what he's going through losing his wife, leaving him to look after his daughter alone.
Renesmee then smiled. "But still, I love him, a lot!" She said.
"And I'm sure your dad feels the same way about you." Jacob smiled.
"Yeah, I think he does." Renesmee said. That's when she realized something.
"What is it?" Jacob asked.
"I love you too, big bro." Renesmee happily said catching Jacob by surprised but still smiled seeing how the little girl has his heart.
On a Saturday afternoon when it is sunny on a rare day, Jacob's friends were gathered around at a table at Forks Mall. Embry, Quil, Sam, Jared, Paul, Emily, Claire and Kim were waiting for Jacob to come. Normally, they would be hanging out together like this on the weekend, but instead, with exams coming for the semester, they have to study and do the mountains of homework they were given as they prepare for the exams. Something that no one is looking forward to.
Claire groaned at the books laid out in front of her. "If god is so awesome, why did he created this stupid thing called exams?" She complained as she had her head down, feeling like giving up, even thought they've been here for only ten minutes.
"Quit bitching and just study already." Paul said in annoyance as he was trying to look at his math textbook.
"Hey Embry, I'm craving for a Coca-Cola." Claire said to him.
"Then get up your ass and just buy one." Embry said like it was that obvious as he watches Claire and her fits.
"I don't wanna!" Claire whined as she buries her head in her arms. "Just get it for me and I'll do you a solid. I'll let you borrow my notes I copied off of Kim's." She offered.
"Whoa, you mean it?!" Embry asked as if he couldn't believe his eyes. But then something occur to him when he frowned. "Wait a minute, I could just borrow them from Kim myself. At least I can read hers." He pointed out.
"Almost had him!" Claire said.
"Hey there!" Jacob called causing everyone to turn to see their friend coming over.
"Oh hey man!" Quil greeted him and then notices who's holding Jacob's hand. "Oh that's cool, you brought Renesmee along with you." He said as everyone else greeted Jacob and Renesmee.
"Yeah, she's made some plans with your brother." Jacob smiled.
"And I've been waiting!" Everyone turned to see Quil's younger brother Brady who is around Renesmee's age running over to them. "Nessie's here!" He said excitedly causing Renesmee to giggle. That was the nickname Brady gave her since he could never pronounce her name right. So he called her Nessie for short. "You ready to play?" He asks her.
"Sure!" Renesmee smiled and turned to Jacob. "Okay Jake, study hard. If you get the highest score in the class, I'll give you a present." She said.
"Great, I'll hold you to it." Jacob smiled to her.
"Come on, let's go!" Brady said as he and Renesmee took off to the playground near the mall.
Embry just sighed. "Man, it's times like these, I am actually jealous of that kid." He said. That's when Kim lifted her head up when was helping Jared out.
"No more stalling." She said. "Let's start off with the table of trigonometric identities."
And so they did as everyone tries to help one another going over the things to prepare for the exams while helping out on the homework. As did, Jacob's mind was thinking about Renesmee's parents. It's sad hearing about what happened to Renesmee's mother. What's worse is how Edward's is left to deal with taking care of his daughter by himself. It must be hard to juggle a job and raise kid on your own. If that's the case, why would Edward spend most of his days at work and come home late? Why did he put away all the photos of his wife and hid them from his daughter? Come to think of it, the way Edward leaves at night when he gets a call whenever he, Jacob and Renesmee are together and not come home until later at night seems odd. It's understandable since he's a detective, but it couldn't wait until morning?
Look at Jacob himself. His parents left him to stay at his mom's friend's place while they're overseas and they still keep in contact with him. Even sending him his birthday present last month. A thought comes to when Jacob tries to understand about people who loses their spouse and how they cope with it. And the only logic explanation, surely, Jacob hopes that Edward isn't spending more time with his job than his only family.
It was later that evening, and Jacob and Renesmee are home after Jacob's study session with his friends and Renesmee's play date with Brady. Edward wasn't home as he is probably still at work. Jacob was just doing the dishes and got done when he heard the front door open.
"I'm back." Edward called as he came in and hung his jacket up and sat down on the couch looking exhausted.
Jacob dried his hands before coming over to the living room to see Edward all worn out. "Um, hey,"
"Oh hey, Jake, what is it?" Edward asked.
"Well, I came across this," Jacob said as he held out the photo he found earlier and showed it to Edward. When Edward saw the photo of him with his wife and daughter, he didn't say or react to it, only stare into it. "It made Renesmee really happy. I thought maybe we could leave it out."
Edward sighed. "Well, you seemed to know her better than I do. So it's up to you." He said, not even looking at Jacob. After all, every time now when Edward comes home from work, he would see the closeness Jacob and Renesmee are to each other. Renesmee appears to be comfortable to Jacob than she had been before he came to live with her and Edward.
Jacob was confused about it… and mostly concerned about what Edward said. That's when Renesmee came in.
"Daddy! You're home now."
Seeing Renesmee, Edward's eyes lit up at his pride and joy, his life.
"Hey kiddo, what's up?" Edward asked her with a smile.
"Well you see, I," Renesmee looked nervous as she held a form in her hands. "I have this thing at school, and I…"
"Well, what is it?" Edward asked. Renesmee couldn't answered as she looked to be struggling. That's when she suddenly dropped the form and clutch onto her stomach.
"Ah! My tummy hurts!" She cried causing panic to Edward and Jacob.
"Are you okay?" Jacob asked her in concern as he got on his knee. Renesmee didn't answer as she whimpering.
"Did you eat something you shouldn't have?" Edward asked as he got up and came over to her.
"My tummy feels stingy. It really hurts." Renesmee cried.
"O-Okay, just stay calm." Edward said trying to calm his daughter down as he was telling himself that. The last he needs his daughter to see is her father feeling distressed. Then, something came to him. "Wait, haven't we been through this before? Did it feel like it did last time?" He asked as another kind of panic came to him afraid of what it could be.
"I… I'm not sure." Renesmee said, weakly.
"Damn it!" Edward hissed as Jacob looks at Edward to see if there's anything he could do to help. "Where did I put that medicine?" He said to himself as he got up. But before Edward could go look for it, his phone rang. "Shit, are you kidding me?! Now, of all times?" He asked in annoyance as he pulled out his phone. "Yeah, this is Cullen here." He answered as Jacob watches him. "Emmett, I can't talk right now," Edward was about to say more, but was cut off. "What? A hand written letter? For me? Is it for Charlie? When did it arrive?" He asked urgently, as Jacob listens seeing Edward less concern about what's happening right now. Edward's eyes flashed. "You forgot to tell me?! You dumbass! I'm on my way!" He said in outrage as he hung up.
"Daddy?" Renesmee called, confused what's going on as she and Jacob, him being astonished at what is happening, watch Edward grab his jacket and was at the front door. Edward just stopped there.
"I'm heading out." He said, not looking at the two of them. "Jacob, th-there should be some cold medicine in the first aid. Take care of her." Is he for real?! Jacob thought in disbelief.
"But she's –" Jacob couldn't finish as the front door was close and Edward was gone, leaving Jacob alone with Renesmee still crying out in pain from her stomach as Jacob just couldn't believe his eyes.
What kind of father would just leave their child in a moment of need for some paper at work? He thought. Jacob just couldn't believe Edward's actions, abandoning his daughter when she needed him the most and he chose to take the call he received over her. Jacob wonders if there's more to Detective Edward Cullen than he was told from his family and friends.
Jacob found the medicine he needed and gave it to Renesmee. He got her to sit down and rest as he put on the TV for her to watch and make her feel better.
"How are you feeling? Better?" He asked her.
"Kind of." Renesmee answered as she watches the nature channel and see a baby penguin reuniting with its parent. "Hey big bro, I have a question. Do you think daddy's my real father?" She asked causing Jacob to be taken aback.
"What?" Jacob said in complete shock of her question.
"It's weird," Renesmee said as she looks at her lap. "But I just have this feeling sometimes I'm not his real daughter."
"Why is that?" Jacob asked in astonishment. It was just hard to believe someone Renesmee's age would ask such a question, or even believe such a thing.
Renesmee turned and looked at Jacob. "Because, the way he acts, daddy cares more about the bad guys than me." She said with a hurt expression on her face. "I'm sick, and he rushed out and left me."
Jacob was just stunned as he was pained to see Renesmee feel this way being treated by Edward. And yet, Jacob wasn't sure what to do or say. Jacob knows Edward's job is to catch criminals of their wrong doing, and Renesmee should know that too. But I guess the way Edward's been acting, Renesmee sees things differently. Jacob looked and notices something on the floor.
"What's this?" He said as he picks up a paper and recognizes it as the form Renesmee had in her hands before she dropped it from the incident.
"That's mine." Renesmee answered. "They passed it out at school today. The teacher told us to have our parent sign it. They said they have to put down the time they could make it."
Jacob reads the form and sees it's for a parents or guardian to come to school and observe their kids in class. Below it shows the list of time and dates of availability of when they can arrive.
"But daddy won't come," Renesmee said sadly. "When he can choose between me and work, he picks work."
Jacob looks at Renesmee seeing how sad she is. He looked at her and then at the form in his hands seeing what he must do.
"Let's ask him when he gets back and see what he says." Jacob assured her with a smile. That there, cheered up Renesmee.
"Okay, good idea!" Renesmee said as she got on her feet. "I'm going to bed now. Goodnight."
"Alright, goodnight." Jacob said as he watches her go upstairs for bed. When she is gone, Jacob looks at the form and hoping he can find a way to convince Edward to come his daughter's school event.
The next day was a rainy Sunday, and the weather was not making things easy for Edward.
"Dumbass!" He yelled at Emmett as he slammed his hand on his desk causing things to shake that sure enough the entire building would've heard that. ""I don't know," won't fucking cut it! It's a detective's job to keep looking until he solves the case!" He stated as he threw his sheets of paper on the table, causing Emmett to flinch, and abruptly got up and stormed out of the office.
"Y-Yeah, okay, sorry." Emmett apologized tensely as he watches his partner disappear. Emmett let out a deep breath.
Geez, this guy is one screw loose away of going haywire like my wife after she gave birth to our son last year. He thought. Things haven't been going well lately with everything going on, it's really putting Edward on edge before any minute, he could have a heart attack, even if he doesn't look like that age to have one. It gets worse since he's still on the case involving the hit and run incident that took away his wife. Emmett doesn't blame Edward. If that happened to him, he'd be the same way… just not as crazy as Edward is right now.
Emmett began gathering the papers that Edward threw and got them straighten out, when Jacob came in.
"Emmett?" Jacob called causing Emmett to look up.
"Oh hey dude, what's up?" Emmett said.
"Is Edward here?" Jacob asked.
"Nah, he just stepped out, but he should be back soon." Emmett said as he looks the papers in his hands to be sure they look good. "Go ahead, have a seat and wait." He offered.
"Cool, thanks." Jacob smiled, pulling up a chair and sat down as Emmett sighed.
"Man, Edward never gives up." Emmett said making Jacob to be curious. "It's like he's always on the case. He ever like that at home too?" He asked Jacob.
"What do you mean?" Jacob asked in confusion, now even more curious seeing how Edward has been acting lately.
"Well you know how we caught that kid who claims to admit he was responsible for all the murdering cases?" Emmett asked and Jacob nodded hearing about those incidents since he moved to the city. "Edward apparently is certain that the guy isn't the serial killer since the last victim he killed didn't fit the pattern to the other victims. So he's researching on his own. And on top of that, he's gone totally nuts over the recent hit and run cases – " Emmett suddenly stops himself. "Ah shit! Back to work! Back to work!" He panicked as he took the papers and dashed out of the room.
Confused, Jacob turned and saw Edward coming in.
"Oh hey there." Edward greeted Jacob.
"Here," Jacob said, handing out a duffle bag to Edward. "The change of clothes you asked for."
"Great, thanks a lot." Edward said in appreciation as he took the bag.
"Um, one more thing," Jacob said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the form from Renesmee's school. "This, from Renesmee."
"What is it?" Edward asked as Jacob gave him the form and read what it says.
"They're doing some parent teacher thing where you come and observe the class." Jacob explained to him. "They want to schedule you, but need to know a time."
Edward shrugged. "Any time is fine." He said. "I'll fill this out later."
Jacob looks at Edward. "Are you coming home tonight?"
Edward just sighed. "I doubt it. Is Renesmee feeling any better?" He asks feeling worried about his daughter.
"I think she's finally recovered." Jacob answered. "But…" He hesitated, not sure how to bring up about how Edward left her last night.
"But what?" Edward slowly asked.
"N-No, forget it." Jacob said.
There was silence as Edward looks at Jacob and then finally speaks. "Hey, you got a minute?"
"Sorry for the wait, here's your order." The waitress said, putting out two plates of food for Edward and Jacob.
"I haven't eaten a bite since lunch." Edward said as the two are at the diner where Edward invited Jacob over to join him.
"And here are your two to-go orders." The waitress says to Jacob as she held out two bags of takeout trays Jacob orders for when he gets home for him and Renesmee to eat later since Edward probably won't be coming home tonight.
"Great, thanks." Jacob said, putting the bags aside as the waitress went on to do her usual duties.
"I've been meaning to tell you about something for quite some time now." Edward said to Jacob as he pulled out a folder from his suitcase, causing Jacob to be curious. "It's about Bella's car accident." He said, handing it to Jacob.
Curious, Jacob took the folder. "What's this?" He asked.
"I got a call last night from Charlie, my father-in-law and former boss." Edward explained as he took a bottle of ketchup and pour some on his burger. "I asked him to look into his daughter's hit and run case again and his results came in. Check it out."
Jacob opened the folder and saw file after file about the incident. First, it shows a photo of Bella Swan as the victim of the accident. Then, it shows the scene of where she died along with the time and date which happened two falls ago around one p.m. The next file shows of something that came in recently, something Edward mentioned.
"It was a white Tesla, but it would appeared that they weren't supposed to be out until this year. There were reports of Tesla models being stolen in a heist a few years back as it shows no records of registered vehicles at that time until the next year." Edward said causing Jacob to look up at him. "We checked the records and no one had purchased a vehicle like that at the time. Then, just last week, a similar incident happened again. We're just getting started. With this investigation, it's critical." He said as he took a bite of his burger.
Jacob just sat there taking in what he was told. A hit and run incident? Jacob didn't remember hearing anything about that when he was told. No wonder Edward is dead set at work. He must be trying to find whoever drove that car, that took his wife's life away. That's when it came to Jacob.
"Renesmee doesn't seem to know it was a hit and run. She said it was an accident." Jacob slowly said as if he figured out something. "Why didn't you tell her that?" He asked.
Edward froze when he was about to pick up his drink and then snapped. "You weren't there!" He said and his face morphed into pain as he went on. "It's… hard. Bella was on her way to pick up our daughter. Then that person hit her." He closed his eyes. "It was a cold day, and no one saw it happened. No one found Bella until it was too late. By the time word reached to me, Renesmee was still stuck at that preschool. Out there all by herself, all alone, waiting for a parent who would never come."
Jacob was stunned hearing this. It's sad enough to hear what happened to Edward's wife, and to see how everyone is going through, but what's sadder is what Renesmee must have been going through just waiting her someone to pick her up and no one came and she ended up alone until Edward came, wondering what happened to her mother.
"I could barely face my daughter, let alone tell her the truth." Edward said as he hands were shaken. "It's her father's job to catch criminals, but when it comes to this guy, I don't have a fucking a clue to go on! I'm not giving up though. I will not rest until I catch that person responsible for taking away my wife and mother of my child. He or she will pay for their actions!" He said determinedly with fire in his eyes.
Jacob can see why Edward is so set on this case, but he knows there are problems more at stake than this.
"But think what it's doing to Renesmee." He said to Edward.
"What do you mean?" Edward asked with a raised eyebrow as if he dared someone to speak up against him.
"You're so focused on this case," Jacob pointed out. "That even when she was sick, she –"
"She's the reason I'm doing this!" Edward snapped causing Jacob to flinch. Edward regretted that as Jacob remained silent, but Jacob wouldn't understand how important this case is for him and Renesmee. "Mind your own damn business." He said to Jacob, not making eye contact with him.
"Yes sir." Jacob said slowly as he reluctantly drop it and the two men ate their food without another word.
Later that night, Jacob was at home with Renesmee as they were eating the food Jacob brought back from the diner.
"Hey Jacob, where's that paper?" Renesmee asked, referring to the form she had last night. "Did daddy fill out the form for me?"
"Yeah, he said any time is fine." Jacob answered with a smile. Part of him hoping Edward keeps his word.
Renesmee looks like she could hardly believe it. "You mean it? Daddy's really gonna come to school? Yay! I'm so happy!" She exclaimed, looking so excited.
"It's a big day, isn't it." Jacob said.
Renesmee nodded her head. "It's my very first parent teacher conference!" She said. "My friends said that all of their parents are going to come too."
Jacob smiled to see Renesmee in high spirits after yesterday. Though he hopes Edward doesn't go back on his word due to work, especially with the conversation the two had earlier. Jacob wonders if Edward's doing the right thing and to tell Renesmee himself about what really happened to her mother so that she can understand.
Pushing that aside, something else came to him. "Oh, by the way," Jacob got up and left the kitchen, and return moments later. "I thought you'd like it framed." He said and handed out to Renesmee a photo frame where it shows the photo frame of Renesmee with her parents they found earlier.
Renesmee smiled big seeing it as she hugged it close to her. "Thank you!" She said to him and then stared at the photo frame seeing how she and her parents look happy together then. "Hey big bro, when you die and leave this world, what happens?" She asks.
"Well, then you go to a place called heaven." Jacob answered.
"Mm, good! That's what I thought. So mom went to heaven, didn't she?" Renesmee said.
"That's exactly where she went." Jacob smiled. "And I'll bet she'll be watching your parent teacher conference."
"Yeah!" Renesmee nodded with a smile. Then a thought came to her. "When I die, do you think that I'll go to heaven?" Her question made Jacob confused. "Because if I did, I could see mom." She said as smile at the thought while looking at her mom in the photo.
Jacob just smiled. "Well, that's a long way off for now." He gently said.
"Okay." Renesmee said as continues staring at the photo. "I really want to see mom."
"You will one day." Jacob said, rubbing Renesmee back before telling her that they should finish dinner before going to bed for school tomorrow.
It was Monday which means Jacob has to be at school. Thankfully, the exams he and his class had weren't so hard. However, Jacob didn't care about his results came out to be. He's more focused on the situation that's going on between Edward and Renesmee; Edward with this hit and run case obsession and Renesmee being left out of the truth of what became of her mom.
It was lunch time and despite being a cloudy day, Jacob and his friends had lunch outside together. As they were eating, Jacob turned Emily for a task.
"There was an accident near La Push Beach about two years ago. Do you think you got any information on it?" He asked her. Emily's family works at the news article in Forks. So if anything goes on in the city of Forks, Emily would be the person to go to.
"Hmm, I could probably look into it right now. There has been a lot hit and run news lately." Emily said as she pulled out her phone and looked up on in the archives of articles. "Hmm, here, is this the one?" She saw the date of the article Jacob read out loud for their friends to hear. "A hit and run reported in Forks. The victim was a woman in town, named Isabella Swan."
"That woman was Renesmee's mother." Jacob said causing everyone to be stunned of the information.
"Oh yeah, I kind of remembered that." Sam said. "Poor Renesmee, it was the talk of the town for a little while."
"So did they ever catch the person who did it?" Jared asked.
Sam shook his head. "No, not that I remember." He said as everyone turned to Emily, who was scanning through the article.
"According to this here, there were no witnesses who saw the accident. She wasn't found until hours later. And because there was no evidence about the vehicle, there was nothing the police could do about it, but the case has remained opened." Emily said, looking up from the screen with a sad look on his face. "This must be a hard case to solve if they have no clue who did this." She said to Jacob. He was disappointed that he couldn't find any more information that could give Edward more leads.
"Yeah, I know." He said.
"Oh man, that's so awful. I just wanna kick that asshole's ass!" Claire said angrily.
"Tsk, nothing good could ever come from running. Pussy." Paul scoffed as his fist tightened feeling pissed now. He would like nothing more than to knock some sense into that person for running from his actions.
Everyone else was agreeing, expressing their anger for Renesmee's pain.
"You know, I do feel bad for Renesmee's dad," Embry said to Jacob about Edward. "I mean, the guy's a detective. This has got to be eating him up inside."
Jacob sighed remembering the conversation he had with Edward and how it went. "Yeah, I think it is." He said.
Edward was in his car that night near his house after work. He was once again digging in on his wife's case. Truth is, he's been in his car for awhile as he was reading through the files he got from his father-in-law about what he found so far. Still no clues that could lead to finding that person responsible for his wife's death. He's been at dead end after dead ends now. Part of him thinks it's time to call it quits, but then again, how will he face his daughter who has no clue what happens? Could he put it upon himself to tell Renesmee the truth? How can he live like this if he doesn't fulfil his wife's wishes and avenge her? Could he be able to face Renesmee this way? That's probably why Edward is so determined to find the perpetrator. Edward closed his folder as he sighed before getting out of his car.
Jacob and Renesmee getting the pizza that they ordered in the living room when they heard the front door opened.
"I'm home." Edward called tiredly.
Renesmee's face lighten up as she rushed over to greet her dad. "Welcome back!" She welcomed him. "Lookie, lookie daddy! It's mom's picture! I put it right there!" She said happily as she points at the photo Jacob framed that's placed next on the cabinet next to the phone.
Edward looked at the photo and just sighed. "Great," He tiredly said.
"Remember when we took this picture, daddy? When we went to La Push?" Renesmee asked excitedly.
"Let's talk about it later, okay Renesmee?" Edward said as he was too exhausted to talk about it.
Renesmee's face fell and was disappointed at how Edward acted as he walked passed her and sat down on the couch with Jacob sitting near him by the coffee table.
"Okay, um daddy, remember my school form thing?" Renesmee asked, hopefully.
"Yeah, what about that?" Edward asked as leans back on the couch.
"Um, well, where's the paper?" Renesmee curiously.
"The one I gave you to sign yesterday." Jacob remined him.
"Oh, this thing." Edward said, lazily pulling out the paper from his jacket.
"You sure anytime is okay?" Renesmee asked hopefully.
Edward sighed. "Yeah, fine." He said. "But you should know the chances are I won't make it."
Renesmee let out a gasp as she everything inside her felt like she was given a dog only for that dog to be taken away.
"I'm sorry but I'm so busy, I can't afford to take the time off right now." Edward said unfortunately.
At those words, Renesmee felt broken to hear that her father would be at work rather than be with her on the biggest day at her school. Jacob was just as shocked as Renesmee is as he couldn't believe Edward would go back on his word to attend at his daughter's school event. Hearing this got Jacob very upset seeing Edward this way.
"But you told her you would!" Jacob argued.
"It's okay." Renesmee said before Edward could speak. Both men turned to see Renesmee with her head down. "You don't have to come." She quietly said as her tiny fists tightened. "You'll have to work on a case. You have to find a bad guy." She then looks up with tears in her eyes. "You care more about those bad guys, more than you care about me, don't you, huh? Just forget it!" She cries as storms out of the room.
"Renesmee, wait!" Edward called out, but Renesmee didn't respond as her footsteps were heard going up the stairs. Edward let out a sigh of frustration. "Great," He said, sarcastically as he ran his hand through his hair. "What has gotten into her lately?" He asked, not once seeing his daughter act like this before.
"She was really hoping you would go to this." Jacob said to Edward, being very unhappy. "Now you've gone and disappointed her."
Edward sighed knowing how bad he feels. "I can't help it, I gotta work." He defended. Hearing this, made Jacob even more pissed at Edward's excuse.
"That may be, but I really think you need to spend more time with your daughter." Jacob stated.
Hearing this, hit a nerve to Edward. "Watch it." He growled in warning.
"Tell her about the hit and run. Tell her what actually happened!" Jacob demanded.
"I told you to mind your own fucking damn business –" Edward suddenly froze.
"There was… a hit and run?" Renesmee asked in shocked. Jacob's eyes widened and turned to see Renesmee standing there, hearing the conversation.
Even more great. Edward thought sarcastically, seeing what Jacob has put him in now.
"It's not something you need to know about." Edward said to Renesmee.
"Why not?" Renesmee asked.
"You don't!" Edward snapped causing Renesmee to flinch.
Renesmee couldn't help feeling more hurt now that her dad yelled her, something she didn't even do. Why didn't her dad tell her that her mom died from a hit and run? Why is he so mad now?
"Daddy, why are you mad at me?" Renesmee asked, her lips trembling. "Why me? And how come you never listen… to anything I say? Never!" Her words stung Jacob hearing Renesmee this way. Now he's not sure what to do.
"You're stupid daddy! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!" Renesmee cried, stomping her foot.
"Don't you dare talk to your father like that!" Edward angrily yelled as he stood up abruptly.
"Why shouldn't I? It's not like you care about what happens to me anyway." Renesmee pointed out. "I don't know what I did, but it's clear, you hate me." Edward gasped in shock at how his daughter thinks this way. But what she says next, shocks him even more.
Renesmee let out a sniffle as she looks at her dad right in the eye. "You aren't real! It doesn't matter because you aren't my real dad!" At those words, Edward froze where he stood, shocked at his own daughter's words. Everything inside him was like a bullet went right through his heart… the same way when he heard the news about his wife.
Not being able to take it anymore, Renesmee took off and ran out the front door, crying before anyone could stop her.
"Renesmee!" Jacob called as he scrambled off the floor and went after her.
"Why would you say that?" Edward called out in complete astonishment as he follows after them.
When Edward came out, Jacob was there, but no Renesmee. They looked around and she was somehow nowhere to be seen. And it's already getting late at night.
"I'll look around the neighborhood and see if she's near the playground." Jacob said to Edward.
Edward nodded. "Okay, I'll go see if she's out in the streets. Let's hurry." He said.
"Right." Jacob nodded and the two went separate directions.
On his feet, Jacob scans around the neighborhood, hoping Renesmee didn't take off too far. But who knows. Jacob hopes that's not the case. Minutes later, Jacob couldn't find Renesmee anywhere in the neighborhood. Not even at the nearby playground. Jacob sighs as he can't help but worry about Renesmee. She has every right to be mad, but being out at night is dangerous for her. That's why Jacob won't stop until he finds Renesmee and that she is safe and sound. The question is, where would Renesmee be?
Jacob continues looking around until he heard footsteps coming behind him.
"Jacob!" He turned and saw Edward catching up to him. "Did you find her?" He asked frantically.
Jacob shook his head. "No, nothing. She's nowhere to be seen." He said.
Edward can't help be worried. Just where would Renesmee go if she were this upset?
"Did she mention wanting to go anywhere lately? Anything you could think of?" Edward asked Jacob.
Jacob thought for a moment. "Hmm, no, not really." He said. But then, something struck Jacob when it came to him. "Wait, there was something," He slowly said as he remembers the conversation he had with Renesmee when he gave her the frame photo of her and her parents.
"When I die, do you think that I'll go to heaven? Because if I did, I could see mom."
Edward gasped in complete horror when Jacob mentions it.
"No, she wouldn't." He said. No way his daughter would do such a thing.
Before either of them could think, a siren was heard, and they both turned to see an ambulance driving by with it's siren on. The two watch as it drove passed them, heading somewhere.
"It's heading to La Push beach." Jacob said as Edward gasped.
At those words, scenes were flashing right in front of Edward's eyes. Without thinking, Edward took off to where the ambulance could be heading. "Edward, wait!" Jacob called, but Edward didn't listen.
Edward was running as fast as he can, not caring that his legs will give out or that he is out of breath. Not when he's about to come across what he fears.
"Renesmee," Edward said to himself as the memories of Renesmee playing with her mom were replaying in his head. The last happy moments they had together as a family.
Bella, please protect her! Protect Renesmee! He thought as the memory of him sitting at Bella's grave with Renesmee on a rainy day came in his head, he feared to have history repeat itself.
"I'm begging you!" He cried as he picks up the pace and heads to La Push.
Moments later, Edward arrives at La Push, and goes down when he saw her near the ocean.
"Renesmee," Edward said, breathlessly as he was relieved to see his daughter, her back to him as she sat on the sand, almost close to the water. That's when Jacob caught up and saw what was going on.
"Thank god, you found her." Jacob said in relief. He was glad that Renesmee is okay.
Edward didn't say anything. Though he's glad Renesmee's alright, he was sad, especially with what happened back home. What can he do now that he found his daughter, who claims he's not real to her?
"Jacob, I think you should go to her." Edward said, causing Jacob to be confused. "Listen, you're the family member she trusts the most right now. Chances are, she's most likely to listen to you than me." He said sadly. Some father I am. He thought.
"You're still running from her." Jacob said, causing Edward to be taken by surprised when he turned to him. "You're her father and Renesmee needs you the most. It's time to stop what you were doing and focus on what's important here, and that's your daughter."
Edward stare into Jacob's eyes to see he was serious about this. But it's more than that, the way Jacob spoke to him, reminds Edward of how Bella spoke; stubborn but knows when it comes to what's important. He turned to where his daughter sat, still in the same place. Edward hesitated before he walks over her.
Renesmee, still teary, stares into the ocean until she turns her head when she heard footsteps and was surprised to see it was her father.
"Daddy." She said as she slowly gets up when her dad approaches her.
"So this is where you've been." Edward said.
Renesmee didn't say anything as she turns and stares into the ocean. "When mom was still with us, you and me and mom would come here and play around near the ocean and make sandcastles together. It was just the three of us."
"It was." Edward said as he sadly thought of the memories he shared with his wife and daughter.
"Why mom? Tell me, why did you have to leave?" Renesmee said as she starts crying. "Daddy, I just wanted to see her so bad!"
"Renesmee," Edward said sadly.
"Daddy, ever since then… you forgotten about mom." Renesmee cries as she was wiping her eyes even though she can't stop the tears from through. "You hid all of her pictures, and you never ever talked about her." She turns and looks at her dad. "Do you hate her now?"
"Sweetheart, you got it all wrong." Edward said gently as he came over to Renesmee and got down to her level.
"What am I, daddy?" Renesmee's lips trembled. "Do you hate me too now?" She asks and just couldn't hold it in anymore as she cries.
"Silly girl," Edward said soothingly. "You know I could never hate you. And I'm sorry I made you feel this way."
With that, Renesmee continues crying as she threw her arms around her dad allowing Edward to pull her close to him.
"Renesmee, please forgive me." Edward cries as she continues to do so.
From a distance, Jacob watches the two of them as he smiles seeing how the two are reconnecting. A tear came out of his eye, and he didn't bother to wipe it off as he continues watching Edward and Renesmee embracing by the ocean where the moon shines.
A few days has passed since then, and the relationship between Edward and Renesmee is slowly rebuilding. Though Edward still works, he made sure to come home as expected for Jacob and Renesmee and every time he receives a call from work, Edward would only go unless if it's actually an emergency. Since then, Edward has been focusing on has job and that's taking care of Renesmee. After what he went through, he must never take that for granted ever again.
Jacob and Renesmee were in the kitchen as they were preparing some meals for the next day.
"You know what, big bro?" Renesmee said. "You know how ever since mom died, I've been kind of lonely? It got me thinking, maybe dad's been lonely too."
Jacob looks at Renesmee at what she said.
"So I said I won't cry about that anymore." Renesmee smiled. "It's my job to do what she did so that dad won't be lonely."
"That's nice of you, Renesmee." Jacob smiles, happy to see how the two are patching up with forgiveness.
"And you and me can work hard together!" Renesmee said.
"Cool, sounds like a plan." Jacob said. And that's when the front door opened.
"I'm home." Edward called.
"Daddy's here!" Renesmee exclaimed as she rushed out of the kitchen. Jacob followed until into the living room and saw that Edward had come in and placed a white cake on the coffee table.
"Hey guys, have a seat. I'll get the silverwares." Edward smiled.
Jacob and Renesmee were curious as they sat down and Edward came back with plates along with silverwares and mugs of hot chocolate.
"You know, I've been thinking." Edward said as he sat down. "This is a special day for all of us."
"Really?" Renesmee said.
"Yes, it's the day when the three of us became one big family." Edward smiled to her.
"What about before?" Renesmee asked as she was referring to when Jacob first moved in with them.
"Y-Yeah, you got a point." Edward said and cleared his throat. "Well then, this is the day we finally make it official." He said.
Renesmee tilted her head. "Hmm, okay." She said and turned to Jacob. "I'm not really sure what he's trying to say, but look, we have cake, Jacob!"
"Yep." Jacob smiled. He then looked down on the table and notices something next to his plate. "Uh Edward, this cup," He pointed out to the gold mug when it's design is exactly the same as Edward's and Renesmee's mug that they would always use.
"As of now, it's your own personal cup. Please use it. It'll make her happy." Edward smiled to him.
Jacob was surprised and touched at Edward's offer as it made Jacob smiled. "I'll take good care of it." He nodded.
Edward nodded as well. "Oh, before I forget." Edward reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded paper and handed it to Renesmee.
Renesmee unfolded it and see it's her school form of her parent teacher conference. She then notices what was written on it.
"Every day is something…" Renesmee tries to understand what it means as she looks at her father.
"It means I'll be there anytime they want. I promise." Edward said as he smiled. At those words, Renesmee's eyes lit up as she burst into happiness seeing that her dad will come. With that, it was time to eat as the three of them enjoy their delicious, sweet cake.
"Families, go through a lot together." Edward said during their celebration. "They laugh, they cry, they bicker, they're meant to share their whole long lives with each other. And well, that's a good thing."
"Mmhmm," Renesmee smiled as she nodded her.
Edward then sighed. "But unfortunately, I was trying to avoid that by chasing someone who would run away. And, you're the one who made me realized that. So, thanks for that." He said to Jacob.
"I did it, because we're a family." Jacob said with a smile.
Edward nodded. "I'm still not giving up. I'll find the person who hit your mom. I promise." He said to Renesmee. "But I won't use that as an excuse to stay away anymore. It just be part of my job.
You see, this isn't just any town, this town is my town. It's the place where you and Renesmee live. It's special to me and that's why I'm gonna live on, protecting this place. As a detective... and as a father." Edward said.
"Daddy, you're cool!" Renesmee smiled.
"That's right, super cool." Edward smiled causing him and Renesmee to laugh.
Jacob gave out a laugh as well as he turns his head and looks at where the photo frame of Edward and Renesmee with Bella. And next to it was another photo frame of Edward and Renesmee with Jacob at La Push that was taken yesterday.
And that is the end of this story. I know some of you guys are probably not happy because of Bella not being alive in this story or how they never found the person responsible for Bella's death. I could've added that in the end, but that wasn't the point of the story. Edward has been affected by his loss so deeply that he's been devoted to not only solving the case, but also to his work that he's neglecting on what's really important right now and that's his daughter who needs him since her mom died. Jacob was there and had to get Edward's ass out of his head to understand that since he cares about this family so much. I'm sure Bella would want that as well aside from finding the person who did this to her, but she wants her daughter to be taken care of by her only family aside from Jacob. So I hope you guys like this short story even if you didn't like this kind or it made you cry. I do appreciate you guys for reading this. Please review.
