"Mija, you can't keep flying off the handle like that. Once that new law passes-"
"I know, alright!" Lucia "Luz" Noceda yelled at her mother Camila. A ball of light danced around her hand, like a dog chasing a squirrel around a tree. "That bastard deserved it though. He called Vee a wetback mutie dyke. Fucker is lucky all I did was break his nose."
Camila sighed, as she pulled out a pamphlet, "Mija, I know you don't want to go here, but this school could really help you with-"
Luz grabbed the pamphlet, stuffing it in the pocket of her green bomber jacket, "Mom, I'm not going to some stupid boarding school in New York! I just-" Luz felt her tears start, as she tried in vain to keep them in.
Camila felt her own tears start to well up at seeing how much pain her beloved oldest daughter was in, "Mija, I get it. I don't want you to go either, but I made promises when you and your sister were born to protect you both. This is how I do that. Those bigots in Washington want nothing more than to take away your freedom, your very lives. I have signed petition after petition, went to the rallies, even marched onto the Senate floor itself. Nothing is gonna stop that law getting passed and passed soon. Just...please. A few representatives from the school are going to be here later today. Can you just talk to them? For me?"
Luz wanted to say no. She wanted to yell and scream that it wasn't fair. Instead, she took a deep breath and looked into her mother's eyes, "Sí, mamá. Lo comprendo. Te amo tanto. Can I just...sit outside for a bit? Might go on a walk to the old cabin and just chill in nature, you know?"
Camila frowned. She knew what Luz meant by "chilling" but the reality was, she had smoked too when she was Luz's age. If she came down on her now, Camila would be one of the biggest hypocrites in all of Gravesfield. "Fine, but don't spend too long 'chilling'. I am gonna make something to eat for when your munchies kick in, ok?"
Luz turned away, her face going red from embarrassment. "Yeah, cool, thanks mamá. Tell Vee I'm sorry about missing her ball game. Again." Luz spoke softly, more tears starting to fall as she left the house and sulked into the forest. As much as she hated disappointing her mamá, disappointing her younger sister Violeta absolutely killed her. She was supposed to be the big sister, supposed to be an example, yet Vee could control her...ability, far better than Luz ever could. Just another thing she failed at. As Luz made it to the cabin in the woods, she pulled out one of her joints. Her friend Winona hooked her up whenever Luz needed, and it really did help her focus and calm down. As she lit it up, she thought about how fast the world had been changing lately. In just about 10 years, costumed heroes had gone from something you only saw in newsreels and comics from WWII, to everyday occurences. Mutants had been pushed into the forefront of people's minds, and of course the bigots had a field day, finding a new "other" to hate.
"Fuck!" Luz shouted to the sky, the rage and frustration she had been feeling for the past few months starting to overwhelm her. She just wanted to be a normal goddamn teenager, and instead she had this...this thing inside her that made her a freak. An outcast. A Mutant. As she sobbed out her hurt and self-loathing, she felt a rumble. She stood up, looking around. What the hell was that? She heard a cracking sound and another rumble. Suddenly a giant head appeared over the tops of the trees. Some kind of giant ass robot was staring down at her.
"Mutant detected. Extermination authorized," a robotic voice spoke, as the robot raised a hand and pointed it at Luz. A hole in the palm opened up, and a beam of light shot forth. Luz's last thoughts were of her family. Would Mamá, Mom, and Vee even know what happened to her out here?
"GET THE HELL AWAY FROM MY KID!" A voice shouted, as some kind of protective shield formed in front of Luz, the laser from the robot slamming into it. From out of seemingly nowhere, Eda Clawthorne, Luz's other mom, appeared and began firing off fireball after fireball, her orange hair with grey streaks catching the light of the sun. They slammed into the robot, causing it to explode, falling to the ground.
Luz ran up to Eda, crying, "MOM! I thought you were at Kamar-Taj!" She shouted as she hugged her mom.
"Your mom told me you've been having a hard time. The Sorcerer Supreme agreed that I needed to be here for my family. Oh baby, are you ok? You're not hurt are you kiddo?" Eda asked, looking her daughter over.
Luz laughed, hugging Eda even tighter, "Oh, Mom, you're home! I'm fucking perfect!"
As the two women hugged, they felt another rumble. Before they could react, a second robot walked out from behind the tree line. "Mutant detected. Mutant sympathizer detected. Extermination...authorized." That horribly tinny voice spoke. The robot raised both hands, as it poured down laser fire on the two women. Eda raised a shield in time, but it was taking all of her power to hold it.
"Kiddo, get to the house and get you, your mom, and Vee out of here! Get to New York, find 177A Bleecker Street, and tell Stephen Strange what happened here. He'll get you in contact with SHIELD. Lucia, light of my life...I love you. Thank you for welcoming me in." Eda spoke, her shield starting to crack under the continuous attack.
Luz wanted to say something, anything, but words failed her. However, before Eda's shield could fully break, a red beam of light struck the robot in the chest, and a blue blur slammed into one of its legs, causing the robot to fall to one knee. The blue blur turned out to be a blue-furred man wearing blue and yellow shorts, and the red blast of light had come from a man with some kind of visor on his face, also wearing a blue and yellow outfit of some kind.
"Your fight is with us, Sentinel! Shadowcat, get them out of here," the man with the visor yelled, pointing at Eda and Luz. Just then, the head of a girl around Luz's age rose up from the ground. She wore a similar outfit to the visored man and had short brown hair. She smiled at Luz, and Luz felt her face get a little hot. She never could resist a pretty face.
"Heya, my name's Kitty, and I'll be your rescuer this evening! Now hold on tight and just keep running," The young woman said, grabbing Luz's hand.
"Like hell you're getting rid of me that easily Summers! Kitty, get my daughter out of here. I'm staying here to help out. No one shoots lasers at my kid and walks away," Eda barked out, running back towards the fight.
Before Luz could shout at her mom to stop, the other girl, Kitty, was pulling her through the forest towards where the street was. What really freaked Luz out though was the fact they were running THROUGH trees, not around them. Luz tried to fight against the other girl, but while Luz had some experience with fights and the like, this girl was obviously well-trained. Finally, after they had been running for a few minutes, Luz was able to slip away, falling to the ground. Luz tried to catch her breath as Kitty walked up to her, trying to pick her up.
"W-what the hell was that thing!?" Luz shouted, staring up at the mysterious girl.
"That was a Sentinel. It's a machine designed by a man named Bolivar Trask to hunt down and either capture or exterminate Mutants. Us." Kitty spoke softly as she finally helped Luz up to her feet.
"Wait, they hunt us down? Can they detect Mutants?" Luz asked, a rising panic starting to form in her throat.
"Yeah, why?"
Luz's face paled, "Vee..." she whispered. Suddenly, the sound of an explosion sounded in the direction of Luz's house.
Earlier...
Violetta Noceda, Vee to her friends and family, was lounging in the room she shared with her big sister Lucia, her tail slowly flicking in annoyance. Not at Lucia, but at that racist homophobic asshole whose nose Lucia had broken when he started in on Vee. The only reason he had even started yelling at her in the first place was because he had caught Vee and her...girlfriend? Ex? Girl she had a crush on, Clara, holding hands, and he didn't like his perfect head cheerleader daughter hanging out with a "mutie dyke" like Vee. She didn't know Clara was still in the closet when she had asked her out after that game, and never would have asked her if she had known. Not every parent was Camila "I'll accept you for who you are no matter what" Noceda or Eda "Fuck the rules, be yourself" Clawthorne. Adding on to that was the fact Vee had been in her natural form when Clara's dad had saw them, and ever since her X-gene had presented itself when she was 11, Vee's natural body had more in common to that of a giant snake rather than a human. Her jaw could unhinge, her eyes blinked vertically rather than horizontally, she shed her skin, and she had scales. SHE HAD A GODDESS DAMNED TAIL! She felt her tears well up as she glanced at her phone's background. It was her and Clara, and Clara was giving Vee's face a peck on the cheek as Vee giggled. Her real face. It was the first time she had let someone outside her family willingly see who she truly was, and it meant so much to her that Clara had accepted her. She heard the door open, and quickly tried to dry her tears. It didn't work, as Camila rushed into the room giving Vee a big hug.
"Mamá, I really l-like Clara. What if her dad presses charges? What if he does something horrible to her? What if she h-hates me for accidentally outing her!?"
Camila ran her fingers through her youngest's hair, whispering loving words in Spanish to her, "Hush mija. I'll take care of everything, just like I always do. Your mamá knows how to deal with jerks like that. Maybe introduce him to la chancla?" she laughed softly.
Vee smiled, that bit of levity really helping her calm down, "Um, can we make sancocho for dinner tonight? I really need some comfort food after, well, everything."
Camila gave her youngest a kiss on the forehead, "Of course mija," she said, hugging Vee closer, "We can start after those school representatives come over. I really think you and Lucia would thrive there, mija. I just hope your sister understands that all I want is to protect you girls."
Vee nodded, letting herself melt into her mom's warm embrace, her tail coiling around her mother. Just as she was about to let go, she felt the house shake. That's weird, they didn't usually get earthquakes in Connecticut. Then all hell broke loose. An explosion sounded from somewhere in the forest, which caused Camila's head to rocket up and begin looking around. Before she had a chance to do anything more, the roof of their house imploded, as a giant robotic fist slammed through it.
"Mutant detected. Extermination authorized," a robotic voice spoke, as giant hands started to peel the roof off their house. Vee screamed, as Camila grabbed her and began rushing towards the stairs. Just then, another fist slammed through the roof in front of them, cutting off their escape. Vee was sobbing, as Camila looked in the direction of her room. Could they make it before-
"Leave the women alone, baiseur. Your fight is with me!" A thick Cajun accented voice shouted, as a series of explosions sounded outside. The arm blocking the Noceda's escape lifted up, and they didn't stop to question why. They ran out the door, and saw a giant purple robot standing outside, as a man with a staff was tossing glowing playing cards at it, which then exploded on contact. Just then, a man seemingly made out of metal ran up to them, getting between the two women and the robot.
"Keep running! We'll take care of this. Logan, are you ready?" The metal man said, in a thick Russian accent.
"Thought you would never ask, bub," a shorter man in bright yellow spandex with metal claws coming out of his fists ran up and jumped up on the metal man's shoulders. Getting into position akin to a javelin thrower, the metal man hurled the smaller man directly at the robot, his claws outstretched in front of him as he slammed into the robot's chest like a human fastball. Camila and Vee ran into the street, away from the battle happening around their house. Camila felt herself trip, and would have fallen flat on her face, but inches before her nose would slam into the ground she stopped. She was soon lifted upright, and her feet placed on the ground, as Camila saw two figures approaching. One was a flame-haired woman, her hand outstretched towards Camila. The other was a bald man in some kind of levitating chair. His face held a certain warmth and kindness, and Camila knew she had seen that face somewhere before.
"I apologize for the circumstances of this meeting. I have already contacted SHIELD and Damage Control, and the damages to your home will be covered. Now-" before he could finish his sentence, the giant robot fell to the ground, a massive explosion erupting from it. The man sighed, "Logan does love to make a mess of things. As I was saying, my name is Professor Charles Xavier, and I believe we have a meeting about your daughters Mrs. Noceda."
It finally clicked for Camila. This was the headmaster of the school she wanted to send Vee and Lucia too. He had been a guest speaker at one of the pro-Mutant rallies she had been too in DC, and it was there she had gotten the pamphlet about his school. Camila was about to speak when she heard someone calling out her name. Camila turned and saw her Lucia, her light, running out of the woods, a young brown-haired woman following close behind. Another explosion sounded in the distance, from the direction Luz had just run from. Did more of these things attack her in the woods?
Xavier smiled as Luz made it to her mother and sister, throwing a giant hug around two of the most important people in her life. "I am glad to see you safe, Lucia. Now, to me my X-men!" Xavier called out, as the people who had been fighting the robot earlier began walking up to them. The man with the playing cards smiled, as he walked up to Camila and kissed her hand, causing the older Latina to blush.
"Enchanté de vous rencontrer, belle dame. Name's Remy LeBeau. Glad to see you and your petite fille are safe." The man spoke, his thick Cajun accent doing...things for Camila.
"Hands off Gambit, she's taken," A voice spoke. Camila spun around, and there she was. Eda Clawthorne. Her wife. The woman who had taken a broken family and put the pieces back together. Camila ran up to her as Eda exited a portal, tears streaming down her face, and kissed her passionately. Sure, the flirting from the man was nice, but the love her and Eda shared was like oxygen to Camila. It was something she needed for her very survival, and like oxygen it burned so, so very hot.
"Ew, that's gross moms," Lucia said, causing the two women to pull apart. Camila and Eda's hands found each other, fitting together perfectly. As if they had always been meant to find each other. As if they were made perfectly just for each other. After her Manny died, Camila had convinced herself that she would never feel that whole again.
As they held hands, more people came out of the woods, a blue furred beast and a man with some kind of visor over his eyes. They walked up to the rest of the group, the visored man going to stand between the red-haired woman and the clawed man. Professor Xavier looked around, a warm smile on his face. "Well, I had hoped we could have this meeting inside, but considering the state of your residence, it might be better that we speak outside, at least for the time being. Damage Control should be here soon to fix this. Now, Mrs. Noceda, Mrs. Clawthorne, what do you hope for your daughters to achieve if they were to come to my school?"
Camila took a deep breath, "We just want them safe Professor. Can you promise us that?"
Xavier floated forwards in his chair, his hand grabbing Camila's free hand gently, "Mrs. Noceda, I swear to you that my school is the safest place on this planet for your daughters. Can I tell you a secret, Mrs. Noceda? Sometimes I awake in the middle of the night, thinking of those who would try and harm my students. Then...I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who comes to my school looking for trouble," he gestured with a smirk to the assembled Mutants surrounding him.
As Camila and Eda looked at each other, trying to figure out their answer, Luz stepped forward, "I'm going. If more of those Sentinel things are gonna keep coming for us, I am not gonna stay here and put my family in danger. What about you florecita?"
Vee was still shaken up, so Luz placed her hand on her little sister's shoulder, causing Vee to nuzzle it gently. That one comforting touch calmed her, and Vee looked into Xavier's eyes, "Me too. I-I wouldn't be able to live with myself if anyone g-got hurt because of me." As Vee finished speaking, the assembled group heard the sounds of aircraft above. Two Quinjets were overhead, slowly lowering to the ground. Multiple dumptrucks and construction vehicles drove up the road, all with "Department of Damage Control" emblazoned on the side. The Quinjets touched down, and the first person out was...
"DIOS MIO, IS THAT CAPTAIN AMERICA!?" Lucia shouted, fighting every urge to run up to the literal embodiment of justice. Captain Steve Rogers ran up to the group, nodding at the man in the visor before holding out his hand to Xavier, which the older gentleman promptly shook.
"Professor, it is good to finally meet you. Fury is dealing with a few other classified missions right now, so he sent me to get the details about this Sentinel attack. I take it you are Mrs. Noceda and this is your family," the Captain asked, smiling at Camila.
Camila tried to think of words, as she smiled back, "Uh, yes. Camila. This is my wife Eda Clawthorne and my daughters Lucia and Violetta. I, uh, wow. Captain America."
Cap laughed, as he shook each of their hands in turn, "Yeah, I have that effect on people. I just want to assure you, this heinous attack was not authorized by the US Government, and Director Fury is making this case a top priority. The repairs to your house should be done relatively quickly. On a more personal note, " Stever looked up at the sky before turning his face towards Camila and Eda, unshed tears forming in the corners of his eyes, "I am so sorry this happened to you and your girls. That new Mutant Registration Act kicking around Washington is sickening to me. It's the very thing I fought against in Germany, and those fools can't even see that. Know that no matter what happens in the future, I'm on your side. Now, I would like to speak to Professor Xavier alone, if that's ok with everyone."
The assembled group nodded, Xavier moving forward in his chair, "Very well. First," he raised his hand to both Luz and Vee, smiling warmly as they both shook it, "I would like to welcome you to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Follow Cyclops and Jean to the Blackbird after you say your goodbyes. We can send for your effects after everything is fixed. Camila, Edalyn, I will send you a schedule for holidays and visitation as soon as we touch down back at the mansion. Captain Rogers, we can have that debriefing now."
Lucia and Vee turned to their moms, Lucia throwing her arms around Camila, "Mamá, te queiro mucho. Más que la vida misma. Mantendré a salvo a nuestra pequeña flor. Te lo prometo." Walking up to Eda, she gave the taller woman the same bone crushing hug she had given Camila, "Eda, look after mami. She'll need you to be her rock. Te quiero."
Eda gave her oldest a kiss on the forehead, tears flowing freely, "Te quiero luz de mi vida. You stay safe too. Vee, keep your idiot big sister out of too much trouble, k?"
Vee smiled, wrapping Eda and Camila in a tight embrace with her tail, "Of course Mom. Te quiero."
The two girls walked away with the group of mutants, as Eda and Camila watched their two wonderful, amazing, perfect daughters start the next chapter of their lives. They both knew it probably wasn't going to be easy, but as long as they stayed together, the Noceda-Clawthornes could handle anything.
Midnight
Camila Noceda sat in her study, unable to sleep. After the events of the day, it was understandable. In her hands was something she hadn't touched since before her Manny had died. A Smith & Wesson 500 Super Magnum, which she stripped and cleaned with a practiced precision. A false wall was open, revealing a veritable arsenal of weapons, ranging from assault rifles to two adamantium katanas. As she finished on the magnum, she heard a ringing. A ringing that she hadn't heard since Manny had died. Opening a drawer in her desk, she pulled up the false bottom, and there it was. A non-descript black phone, with the number calling only showing up as private. She didn't want to answer, but she knew if she didn't, bad things would happen. Clicking the answer button, she held it up to her ear.
"Green. Winter. Chariot. Twenty-four. Tango."
Camila wanted to say no. She wanted to say she had a family. She wanted to say so many things. Instead, she only said two words. Two words she thought she would never have to say again, after Manny's death.
"Hail Hydra."
Author's Note: OH SHIIIIIII- Ok, just a few things. Lucia/Luz is going to be using her beta design, while Vee in this story will be using Luz's canon design. Her other form post "Thanks to Them" will show up later however! Clara is the cheerleader girl with the pink stripe from "Lying Witch and the Warden". As you can probably tell, this story just scratched my writing itch so much, and I just couldn't stop. More "Light of the Gods" and "Witch Among the Stars" will come, but this story is just...doing something for my inner writer. Next chapter is going to be called "Iron Mage," and you can probably guess what's gonna happen in it from the title. I hope you enjoy this story, and hopefully chapter 2 isn't as long as this one!
