She was at home, preparing to leave for the clinic, as Claudette prepared Susannah for the day, when she got the worst call of her life, that William had been shot.
She rushed out of the house, without her hat, but didn't care, as she made it to Tate Street. Once she arrived, and saw an ambulance wagon, with a group of people, standing around, then saw him on the gurney, she pushed herself through the crowd, "let me through, let me through, he's my husband," and ran to his body, "William"
"He's still alive, doctor" Thomas said
She felt his pulse and nodded, "take him to my clinic"
"But doctor, Julia, shouldn't he be going to the regular hospital?"
"I won't have Dr. Forbes, or any other doctor treat him. I will do his surgery. Now put him in the wagon, to the women's clinic or I'll do it myself"
"Lads" Thomas said as the constables put him in the wagon, and Julia got in as well.
When the doors closed she grabbed his hand, "my love, please don't leave me," as she kissed his forehead
When they got to the hospital, Julia instructed the lads, and some orderlies to take him inside, and prepare him for surgery.
As Margaret came through the hallway, "Julia, I'm here. Do you need anything?"
"Your assistance. I am going to do his surgery"
Margaret was speechless, as Julia grabbed tools, "Julia, are you sure that's wise?"
Julia turned to her, "either help me or don't" as she left to the surgery room, and Margaret followed.
Once they got William into a hospital gown, and onto the surgical table, they prepared for surgery, as she checked his pulse, "pulse is steady, but need to find the punctured wound"
The women searched, when Margaret saw a bullet, that was reflecting off the light above, "there, Julia" as she pointed, "I see it, and it appears fragments as well."
Margaret, checked the other side, "nothing on the other side, so it didn't go all the way through"
Julia nodded, and was relieved, "I'll put a metal plate in," when she grabs William's hand, "William, my love. I'm here and will do my best. Please, stay with me."
Margaret, then hands her the anesthesia, and places the mask over his mouth, and checks his pulse again, "he's ready."
It was as a good half an hour into the surgery, and Julia kept asking about his pulse, as she continued picking out bullet and skull fragments, "it's still steady, Julia."
The fragments hit some nerves, but thankfully didn't punctured them, as she grabbed the last bits, "time for the metal plate," which she knew was the trickiest part, as she took a breath, "you can do it Julia" Margaret said with reassurance
She slightly nodded, and placed the plate in his skull, moved it slightly around until it fit, and breathed out, "ok, hard part is over. Pulse check?"
"Still steady" Margaret said
"Good, now time to stitch him up."
When surgery was done, Julia and Margaret cleaned up the tools, as William was placed in a room, under both their care, despite many orderlies, remarks.
Julia came in to check on him, and saw Thomas, "inspector, has he…"
He shook his head, "nothing."
As Julia checked his on vitals, she says, "I want 2 guards posted at his door at all times, inspector"
He nods, "lads" as 2 constables walked out and stood against the hallway wall.
She checks his pulse again, "William, can you hear me?" As she lifts his lids, his eyes were moving, "good I added a metal plate to your skull. You should be awake soon."
"Why are you talking to him?" Asked the inspector
"His eyes moved, inspector. That's a good sign that he heard me"
"Mm" is all the Inspector said
"Now, I'm going to get some supplies and come back" as she caressed his cheek
"We will watch him" said the inspector, and looked at George and Higgins
Julia smiled as she walked out and saw Margaret bring in flowers, "I brought some flowers. I hope they help" and smiled
It was later evening, as the inspector, George, Watts and lads kept interviewing witnesses, Julia kept checking on William.
"It's strange, he should be waking up." As she checked his pulse, "no, no"
"What's wrong?" Asked Margaret
"His pulse, is weakening. Oh, my love. Please stay with me"
"How's he doing now?"
Julia lifts his lids and sees his eyes are moving, "no better but his eyes are still moving, but still his pulse is still weakening."
Margaret placed a hand on hers, "he'll be alright. Why, don't you go home and get some rest."
"I can't leave him. What if…" she begins crying, "what if…he doesn't make it, and I wasn't here."
"I'll stay at his side all night. Go home, see your daughter, and get some rest."
Julia nodded as she wiped her tears, "you're right" as she got up, "but what if he doesn't make it? How do I tell, Susannah, her daddy won't be coming home?"
"Have faith, Julia. He'll make it."
Julia nodded slightly as she grabbed her coat and headed home.
