Chapter Fifteen
She was quiet as she walked alongside him. The streets were still busy, even in the early evening hours of the day. The streets were alive with noise that ranged from cars to people talking. The two cats dozing on her shoulders were so tired that they didn't stir in the slightest from all the noise around them.
She was lost deep in thought, but not deep enough to ignore the weight of a stare fixated on her from somewhere across the street. She keyed into it, picking her head up and silently searching for the person in question. Before long, her eyes landed on a tall figure with dark hair. Even from here, she could spot how his skin was covered in violent burns- the most noticeable one to her being the burn that covered his jaw and all the way down his neck to his chest.
She nearly paused in her walking when he met her stare head-on, not once bothering to look away when she caught onto his staring. There was something about him that felt so uncannily familiar to her, and she couldn't shake the feeling. In an instant, a familiar face flashed through her mind. With it came plenty of memories. She wasn't able to prevent the tears that started to form.
Toya.
"Kagome."
Sesshoumaru's voice cut into her thoughts automatically. She jumped, immediately lifting her gaze to the demon at her side. Though she'd blinked the tears away before any could fall, it was still too late. He'd noticed them the moment they formed. She shook her head and glanced down at her feet. "I-It's nothing," she said after a few seconds, waving a hand as she said those words. "It's just…" she paused, seeming to think for a minute before sighing, "it's just been a long day."
He didn't argue against her claim, but she could tell he didn't quite believe her. Still, he relented enough to turn and continue leading the path for them. A small smile peppered her face as she closed the distance that'd formed. As she did, she couldn't help but let her attention go back to the figure that'd been watching her. When she looked for him among the crowds, she realized that he'd left already.
Confusion formed within her as she slowly let her attention return to the path she walked.
Had it all just been her imagination?
There was no school the next day. After catching up on a bit of classwork she still had, she decided to go out into the city to do some shopping and other things to help her mother with the chores.
Walking down familiar streets with a list in hand, Enya and Eira each draped over her shoulders. As she chose which one to do first, she was quick to notice the lingering weight of a stare on her back. She slowed her pace as she came to a stop at a crosswalk and subtly glanced over her shoulder for a few, short seconds. Though it'd only been a quick glimpse, she was able to spot the familiar figure from yesterday.
"Mew!" Enya perked her head up when she noticed Kagome's actions, tails flickering some. Kagome shook her head and smiled.
"A coincidence, maybe," she whispered to herself. Once or twice didn't always mean anything strange, after all. She carried on the best she could, brushing his stare to the back of her mind as she continued on her way.

Despite her prior words, throughout her day she couldn't quite shake the presence of his stare. From the corner of her eye, she could easily map out his figure. Sometimes he was closer, others he was further away. She'd finished her tasks for the day, and she paused at a corner store for a few things.
Once she'd bought what she needed- just two bottles of water- she exited the store and quickly located the man she'd been followed by all day and promptly made her way over to him. She was calm, never once finding a need to be alarmed by him. There was nothing about his aura that seemed malicious towards her.
When she paused in front of him, she didn't miss the way his eyes had widened- although, only slightly. She didn't shift any in response, merely smiling as she offered a bottle of water to him.
"You've been following me all day, and I haven't seen you drink anything during the whole time," she stated then. "It's important to stay hydrated, you know," she added, unable to help the soft chiding from seeping into her tone.
"Figured you knew," he responded then. He'd yet to take the water, and Kagome shook the bottle impatiently. When she did, he got the hint and took it from her offered hand. When he did, another beaming smile appeared on her face.
"Yeah, I realized earlier," she said. As she spoke, she shifted her attention so it was at her feet. "But… why?" she asked then. "Have we met before?"
The question went unanswered, but she didn't mind his lack of a response. Once more, she was reminded of a face from her past. It hurt, but it was comforting, in a way. It was nice to be reminded of him. Of Toya. Even if it was from a stranger.
She shook her head, long locks of raven ruffling up some. She picked her head up and once more offered him a gentle smile. "My name's Kagome," she said, introducing herself formally to him. "What about you?" she asked. "What's your name?"
He remained silent for a few more seconds, but she didn't rush him into answering her innocent question. A face familiar in every way peered up at him, bright blue eyes gleaming in the sunlight. The dark hair looked better on her, as opposed to the dyed white.
"... Dabi," he finally said, speaking for the first time in minutes. Kagome blinked and nodded, absorbing the knowledge offered to her. She hummed softly and tapped at her chin with a finger.
"Yeah?" she said then. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Dabi!"
Her cheerfulness took him aback, but not enough for it to show. "Really?" he responded. "That's what you say to some guy who's been stalking you all day?" Despite the way her words made his chest feel happy, he wished she'd be more cautious. "Not everyone you meet is gonna be a good guy."
Kagome tilted her head to the side. "I know," she responded, "but I'd rather be kind until I have a reason not to be." He hadn't really given her a reason to regard him in any other way. "You haven't done anything to hurt me," she said. "Not yet, at least," she clarified then. "Anyway…" she paused and glanced down once more, her smile softening some. "I'm not sure why, but you remind me of someone…" she said. "I guess that might also be why I'm being so forgiving about it."
She fell silent then, her attention turned towards the ground. The cats on her shoulders watched him, still, though. "Yeah?" he asked. "And who's that?" His tone, though flat, made her smile widen as she finally looked up again. Identical blue eyes clashed.
"Well, that's hardly any of your business," she retorted jubilantly. A moment later, she felt a slight ache in her fingers. She looked down at her hand holding her shopping, and she sighed. "I should go," she said then. "The shopping's getting heavy."
Before she could move, he held a hand out. She noticed then that his burns continued underneath his jacket. She blinked owlishly, letting her gaze trail back up to his face.
"What?" she deadpanned.
"I'll carry it for you," he eventually said. Before she could ask why, he held the water he still held up. "In return for this, I guess."
After a bit of consideration, she relented and passed the bags off to him. When she had, she was surprised when he took the lead.
"Let's go," he said.
Kagome hesitated for a bit before rushing behind him to catch up. "W-Wait!" she huffed. Once she caught up, she pursed her lips and glared up at him. "How do you know which way to go?" She hadn't given him any directions!
He glanced down at her, and she almost froze as realization hit.
Oh, right.
"... I don't want to know the answer to that, do I?" she asked, skepticism entering her voice.
He gave a short laugh. "I don't know," he retorted. "Do you?"

He paused just before the steps of the shrine before finally handing the heavy bags back to her. She accepted them with a small smile in place. It was silent for a couple of seconds before she asked a question that had been on her mind for a while now.
"Your burns…" she began, tone soft. "Do they hurt you?"
His skin was decorated with a multitude of staples that she'd noticed, seeming to do their best at patching his skin together.
She glanced down at her now-full hands, and she shifted some of the bags so that she had one hand freed up. With it, she reached out to him without fear. Her fingers grazed his hand, just shy of one of his many burns. He didn't react to her question, nor her touch as her fingers remained against his skin.
She wasn't able to say much else before a chill raced along her skin. An aura far from friendly was approaching fast, and she spun on her heel just fast enough to spot a demon with rough skin approaching her at a quick pace. She dropped the shopping she held just fast enough to rise both arms to shield her face from clawed hands so she could ready herself to attack.
Only, she never got to.
She watched from behind her hands as a blaze of blue flames enveloped the demon before it could even reach her. It succumbed to the egregious injuries quickly. Soon enough, it was nothing more than a smear of ash. Kagome was slow to lower her arms. She glanced over her shoulder, blue eyes landing on the figure with her.
"Annoying bastard," Dabi scoffed as he let his hand lower. As he did, Kagome was keen to notice the way his staples looked worse than before, and she frowned.
"Thank you…" she whispered quietly. While it wasn't often as much nowadays, she still had to worry about demons that wished to hurt her in some form. Usually she was able to handle them swiftly, but this time, someone else had been quicker. She hadn't needed the rescue, but she was thankful for it either way.
She knelt to pick up the fallen shopping, raising back up with a better grip on the bags than she had before. At least nothing had gotten too damaged… She picked her head up and looked back at the man with her.
"See ya," he commented, but before he'd started to walk off, Kagome took a step towards him.
"Wait!" she exclaimed. Her tone got him to pause, and he looked at her with an arched brow. A flush of pink colored her cheeks and she backed up a step. "Let me fix up your staples, at least," she said then. "After all," she paused and glanced down. "You didn't have to help me, but you did." When she was answered by silence, she didn't back down. "I-I know I may not look like much, but I'm good at fixing people up. I-I just…-"
"Fine, if it'll shut your rambling up." He stated, cutting her off before she could say anything else. Instead of being offended, she smiled up at him- far too used to comments like that to let it bother her.
"Oh, it will!" she sang in promise. When she was certain she had everything, she made her way up the stairs. After a few, she paused and glanced back to see if he was following her up. He was.
When she reached the top, she paused and silently searched for the presence of anyone else, only to feel nothing. Her mother was still out, and so were Souta and her grandfather.
"Mom's not here, so we'll just go in through the front," she commented as she opened the door. She led him through the house until they reached the kitchen. She set the shopping down to put up later, and she then nodded toward the table. "Have a seat while I go get the first aid kit!" she called over her shoulder. Before he could say anything, she'd already dashed up the stairs.
He relented and did as she said, sitting down at the table and resting an arm on the hardwood. On the counter in the distance, there was a calendar with dates crossed off. Beside it was a photo of Kagome and a young boy with dark hair.
He heard her thumping footsteps as she made her way back down the stairs. She entered the room, hair slightly mussed, with a first-aid kit in hand. It was bulky and looked to hold every possible necessity in it. She set it on the table and sat in the seat beside him as she opened the kit.
The first thing she pulled out was disinfectant, and she glanced up at him as she took the lid off of the can. "Heads up, this will hurt," she said as she got the spray ready. She paused, seeming to think for a second before continuing, "a lot."
That was all the warning she gave before she sprayed it along his skin, and she gripped his hand to keep him from yanking his arm back. It didn't take long before-
"Ow, hey! What the fuck-!"
"Sorry, sorry!" Kagome responded, setting the spray to the side. "I gave you a warning, though."
He met her sheepish smile with a glare, and she merely ignored it as she went back to work on his arm. She wasn't bothered as she worked, carefully removing staple after staple and fixing skin back in place with a new set of staples. The process repeated as she did the same to several other places on his skin. A while later, she set the supplies out of the way and smiled.
"There, good as new!" she exclaimed. She cleaned up the mess, and, as she did, Dabi rose from his seat. She threw the mess away and cleaned the table before setting the first-aid kit on the counter behind her. She was quick to notice how he'd gathered his coat back up. Her smile returned to her face, and she paused in the doorway. "Guess you're leaving now?" she asked.
"Yeah." She didn't try and stop him this time, merely letting him do as he pleased. He paused at the door and looked back at her. "See ya around."
She knew his words were true. After all, he'd been watching her for whatever reason. She didn't let it faze her any, and she waved goodbye. "Oh, I'm sure," she responded as she heard the door close. His aura got further and further away, and she shook her head.
She had shopping to put away.
Auroua-chan: Shorter chapter than prior ones, but I wanted this one to just focus on them. Any ooc-ness is intended.
So Kagome and Dabi have crossed paths. He showed up a bit earlier in the story, but they never talked then. She's different than others in his eyes, and she's probably the only one he wouldn't harm. [Also goes to say that the Higurashi family won't be hurt by him, either.] Kagome wasn't so wary of him. After all, among her and her demon allies, she's well off in terms of physical strength. She couldn't help but be reminded of someone she loves dearly when she's with him. He protected her then, and he continues to do that now, it seems- just under a new name.
She patched him up some, but she didn't use her Quirk on him. She might one day, though…
When it comes to people like Shigaraki or Hawks with her, Dabi's reactions might be more volatile.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
