Chapter Twenty-Four
"She looks so different, but…-" Fuyumi trailed off in a soft tone. At the sound of her voice, Natsuo perked up some, glancing away from the screen and to the woman at his side. "At the same time, she looks how I always thought she would by now. Does that make sense?" she asked.
"Yeah," he commented. In all his memories, a very specific image of Kagome remained. The girl on the screen somehow looked just like her, yet still managed to appear so different.
"Shoto mentioned that she's been trained by Sesshoumaru, one of their teachers, since before the start of the school year," Fuyumi spoke again. "She's come so far."
"Do you remember when we were younger?" Natsuo asked. The question shifted her attention to him. "How she'd always cling to Toya?"
She smiled, her face lighting up, as she nodded. "She did!" Fuyumi exclaimed. "Well, he probably clung to her just as much," she added. "Still…" her expression softened, a thoughtful smile coming to rest on her face. "I'm sure he's just as happy by how far she's come," she said.
Natsuo nodded, falling silent as that thought lingered in his mind for a while.
"When dad gave her away, he gave her to his sister," Fuyumi continued, letting her gaze return to the TV in front of them. "From what Shoto said Kagome's told him, she's a very kind woman."
Natsuo was silent as he nodded. Fuyumi wasn't bothered by it, and she looked at him with a smile.
"I don't know about you, but I want to meet her, too," Fuyumi stated, fiddling with her sleeve. "Shoto said that Kagome also has a younger brother now," she continued.
It felt weird, having more family they didn't know about.
"I'm worried for her," Natsuo spoke up. Fuyumi looked at him, a puzzled sheen flashing through her eyes.
"Why?" she asked. He was silent for a few more long seconds before he sighed. He set his chin in the palm of his hand as he kept his stare ahead of him.
"You know how the old man is," he commented. As he said those words, his other hand had fisted into the material of his pants. Fuyumi was quiet as she caught onto what he meant by his words.
She had nothing to say in response as she let her attention return to the screen in front of them.
Making their way up to where the rest of their classmates sat, her prior conversation with Endeavor came creeping back up in her mind. It seemed that, despite how much she wanted to, she couldn't put her interactions with him behind her. It was unfortunate, how his mere presence seemed to be such a plague to her.
It wasn't long before her silence was noticed by Shippo. The auburn-haired fox glanced at her, his gaze lingering on her despondent expression for a long while. When she didn't react, he frowned and reached a hand out for her own. She reacted once he took her hand, but she didn't pull it out of his grasp.
"Is something wrong?" she asked, looking up at him with widened eyes. Shippo shook his head at first, pulling her to a stop as he did.
"You look upset," he finally remarked. Kagome's expression shifted to startled before it faded into a small smile. "You haven't said a whole lot, either," he added as an afterthought. "It's not like you, Mother."
Though no one was in range to catch his comment and really understand it, she still bothered to glance around them. As she did, her eyes caught an identical pair. She looked away not even a full second later. It didn't matter how briefly he'd held her attention, Shippo still caught on.
He scanned the stands for what had caught her attention for a fleeting second. With ease, he managed to locate the source- the miko's pro hero father. Shippo frowned, tugging her close to him as he glared at him from across the stadium.
Kagome shook her head and tugged him along with her. He didn't put up any struggle as he fell into step, letting her lead him by the hand.
"You shouldn't put any effort into intimidating him," she remarked in an off-handed fashion. The words slipped out as if she truly didn't care, but they carried a weight that caused Shippo to frown. "He's going to do what he wants," she continued in a soft tone. "And I'm gonna pay him no mind," she stated. "Nothing positive will come out of it, at least."
That much, she was certain of.
Shippo frowned. He knew of the run in Sesshoumaru and she had with him following her first fight. The silver-haired demon was still agitated because of it. It wasn't hard to end up on Sesshoumaru's bad side, but Shippo knew well enough to know that the flame hero had accomplished the task at a record pace. He also knew that if Kagome hadn't intervened when she had during that interaction, then things might not have turned out so pretty.
"If he knows what's best, then he'll back off," Shippo remarked, a stiff tone lacing his words.
She highly doubted he'd resign so easily, but she kept that thought to herself. Given how he'd sought her out again after her second match proved as much.
They'd almost made it to the area where their classmates were at when a familiar voice called out to them.
"Hey, you two! There you are!" Uraraka perked up at the sight of her coming down the hall. Iida at her side also turned. She dashed over to where they were, meeting them halfway. When her eyes landed on Kagome, Uraraka's eyes lit up. "You totally gave Bakugo a run for his money, Kagome!" she exclaimed. Iida came over to where they were, as well. "It's too bad both of us lost to him," she sighed.
Kagome smiled, shaking her head in a light-hearted fashion. "I don't think it's anything to be necessarily disappointed with," she responded. "We made it as far as we did, and we definitely showed off what we're capable of in the process."
The brunette nodded, determination flashing through her eyes. "I really put everything I had in that match, too," she sighed after a moment.
"She's right," Iida remarked. Kagome glanced up at him. He looked at her with a smile once he caught her stare. "Bakugo certainly didn't pull his punches either," he stated. "Both of you stood against him well in your respective fights."
His words brought a bigger smile to her face. "Honestly, I'm glad he didn't," she admitted. "Though…" she trailed off, a spark of ire infecting her normally jovial tone. "He better be ready the next time we're in Sesshoumaru's class because that punk's going down," she huffed.
Her response didn't surprise either of them.
"You know," Iida remarked. Kagome glanced back up at him curiously. "I don't think I expect anything less from you. You certainly aren't the type to give up so easily."
Uraraka nodded, smiling. "That's just the kind of thing you'd say," she stated in agreement with their classmate's prior words.
"Of course," Shippo chimed in, taking both of them by surprise for a moment or two. The usual finicky temperament he kept up around the majority of their class seemed to have faded entirely. He had adopted a friendly disposition that seemed to stick around. "After all, in a fight without their Quirks, she'll win hands-down!"
His comment made her smile, and she gently patted his shoulder. She knew that if a certain spiky-haired blonde heard that comment, there'd be hell to pay. "I shouldn't underestimate him," she remarked with a hum. It was something she could never do, anyway.
The hair over her shoulders shifted a bit before the two felines perked their heads up from the mass of raven locks. Upon seeing them, Uraraka let out a gasp.
"You have Eira and Enya again!" she exclaimed. At her remark, Iida glanced at where they were settled in. She'd always had them with her at school, so, when she first saw her without either of them, it felt so strange. "I thought they had to stay with someone else during the Sports Festival…"
"They did, but since I'm officially out, Sesshoumaru was able to return them to me," Kagome explained.
"It makes sense," Iida responded. "It's just like when we have classes, and they don't want them to interfere with your training," he explained. Kagome nodded. "Since they have such a strong attachment to you, they have to be taken and monitored to ensure that they don't do anything to get in the way or cause some sort of trouble by attempting to do so."
"It's exactly as you said," Kagome chirped, confirming Iida's explanation. "So when Sesshoumaru took them from me earlier, he gave them off to my mom so she could keep track of them." As she finished saying that, she glanced at Shippo with a smile. "Shippo also went to join them once he got out in the first round," she added.
"So that's where you were this whole time!" Uraraka exclaimed. Shippo grinned as he nodded. "Well… I guess I'm not all that surprised you came back with Kagome then…" she trailed off in thought, a thoughtful smile on her face.
"If Sesshoumaru-sensei was there, you were permitted to stay, correct?" Iida asked. Initially, Iida had expected his finicky temperament to kick back in the moment Shippo looked at him, but, to his surprise, it didn't. He smiled, lifting a hand to brush back a loose lock of auburn hair.
"Yeah," he admitted. His tone was the same friendly one he kept reserved for his friends, and the select classmates he'd warmed up to. "Since they were all here, I wanted to cheer Kagome-chan on with our family."
The comment took a couple of seconds to land, but once it had, both Iida and Uraraka looked at the pair, utterly stunned.
"F-Family?!" Uraraka exclaimed with a shocked gasp. Iida, as well, looked quite surprised. Their responses made Kagome eye them with confusion. "I-I always thought…-" she trailed off, swapping to look at Iida with a slightly flustered expression.
"Y-You see…-" Iida spoke up then, taking the initiative for the brunette. "It's just that we always assumed that the two of you were…- Well…-"
Kagome caught on soon enough. Silence hung in the air for a couple of seconds before she burst out laughing. The pair had no words to say, especially when Shippo laughed along with her, gleaming canines flashing as he bared his teeth in a full grin. She supposed it was a fair assumption, given how Shippo tended to behave around and toward her. The difference between human and demon behaviors was often a culture shock.
"Shippo's just really protective of me." Kagome broke her laugh in order to explain to the two. "But, yes," she continued, " we're family." When they looked at their connected arms, Kagome followed their stares. A smile remained on her face. "Shippo's a fox demon," she stated. "Fox demons just so happen to be some of the most territorial over their family," she remarked. "So his behaviors are completely normal, even if they might come off as excessive by human standards."
She couldn't exactly explain that she was his foster mother without them getting even more confused. She left that little tidbit of information out. After all, they seemed to understand easily enough.
"Now that I think about it like that, it actually makes a lot of sense!" Iida remarked. He thought back to how the fox often shifted in attitude depending on whether Kagome was present. "I admit," he continued, "demon customs are a topic I'm not all that familiar with. Higurashi, you're quite knowledgable on them," he remarked.
Kagome smiled and nodded. "It's something I've just sorta picked up on since I'm Sesshoumaru's student," she stated. Well, that and due to her past. That was another thing she didn't let slip. She wasn't sure how they'd take that one, either.
"We have a lot to learn, then," Urarka remarked. "Not just us, but the others as well," she added with a faint laugh. "They all thought the same as us," she admitted. "Boy are they gonna be shocked when they learn this!"
"Did I miss anything while I was out?" Kagome asked.
"Kirishima just had his match against Tetsutestsu," Uraraka said. "Kirishima won, so that means he'll be up against Bakugo in the third round."
"The next match will be between Midoriya and Todoroki," Iida stated. Kagome nodded and took a step forward.
"We should take our seats before it starts," she said. She was met with agreement by the three with her. Walking in, Kagome and Shippo filled in the seats alongside Uraraka and Iida.
"Hey! Look who made a speedy recovery!" Kaminari perked up upon spotting her. "We haven't seen you up here the whole time," he continued, talking to the newcomer pair.
"Even without Recovery Girl's aid, I tend to heal fast," Kagome explained. She didn't miss the pair of red eyes subtly eyeing her from the side. Bakugo hadn't looked directly at her, but he was staring her down from the corner of his eye, by the look of it. Kagome didn't call attention to it.
"You know, it was really nice of Bakugo here to catch you before you hit the ground," Sero chimed in, leaning forward over the blonde's seat. The remark made a vein pop on Bakugo's head. His comment brought the memory she'd momentarily forgotten about back to mind. Still, she said nothing about it when Bakugo shoved his hand away.
"Shut the hell up before I kill you," he growled. As he did, he looked away from her entirely. She refrained from sighing. She'd thank him, but he'd likely bite her head off for thinking he was trying to be nice.
"Honestly, what can't you do?" Kaminari laughed. "I was totally surprised during our match, you know!" he exclaimed. "I would've told you sooner, but I didn't get to see you after."
Kagome offered Kaminari an apologetic smile. "Sorry," she said. He caught on quickly with what she was referring to, and he shook his head to brush it off.
"What're you apologizing for?" he asked, a grin highlighting his features. "We really can't just underestimate you, can we? It's a one-way ticket for you to wipe the floor with us," he laughed. "I got so used to seeing you not use your Quirk that I got blown back when you went all out!"
Kagome smiled, relieved when it seemed he bore no hard feelings towards her.
As the match was called to start, Kagome let her attention swap back to the area below, blue eyes easily mapping out the two figures below. As fond as she had become of Midoriya, there was no secret as to who she wanted to advance to the next round.
The first events of the fight escalated rapidly. Todoroki made the first move, unleashing a burst of his ice. It ran along the ground, massive spikes of ice shooting up from the ground as it sped toward Midoriya. Just as quickly, Midoriya reacted. He used his smash to block the ice, redirecting its course with a harsh burst of wind.
The ice shattered to pieces as it got blasted back. An icy chill raced through the area as the cold wind carried. A barrier of ice behind him kept the duo-color-haired boy from being knocked back any.
Twice more, the cycle repeated. Each time, the ice got knocked back before it could reach Midoriya. A cold chill seemed to linger even in the stands.
"It's already started?" Kirishima ran in to join them, pausing without making it to a seat. His presence caused a few to look away from the match.
"Oh, hey!" Kaminari said. "Good job on making it to the next round."
"Yeah," Kirishima said, turning to face them. "I'll be fighting you in the next round, Bakugo," he said, fixing his gaze on the spiky blonde. "Let's have a good fight!"
Bakugo didn't look away from the fight, but his expression did change. "I'll kill you," was all he stated in response.
Kirishima wasn't fazed by the remark. He set his hands on his hips, a grin spreading across his face. "I'd like to see you try!" he laughed. "But man, you and Todoroki can both shoot off powerful attacks that cover a lot of ground."
"And you can do it with no time lag," Sero added on.
"I'm not just shooting them off," Bakugo stated. "Don't underestimate 'em."
"Huh?"
"If you overuse your muscles, the muscle fibers tear. If you keep running, you'll run out of breath," Bakugo said. "Quirks are physical abilities, too. They must have some kind of limit."
"Bakugo's right," Kagome remarked from her seat. They looked at her, but she didn't bother to turn her gaze away from the pair fighting below. "Shoto relies heavily on his ice while ignoring his fire," she stated. "Doing so can have repercussions. It can lead to him exhausting his energy, leading to becoming hypothermic in his case." She folded her arms across her chest. "Even though I attempted to keep a balance during my fight against Bakugo, I ended up with the opposite effect. I ended up becoming hyperthermic, which led to me fainting like I did.
"You seem to understand the stakes very well," Iida commented once she fell silent. "It makes sense," he stated then. "The two of you seem to possess very similar Quirks."
"It's no wonder you two get along so well," Sero commented.
In response, Kagome was quiet for a few more seconds before she nodded.
"Yeah, we do," she admitted. She paused and held her hands up in a mild shrug the next second. "But he's a lot stronger than I am with his Quirk," she stated. "While I'm stronger with my physical fighting capability."
"So you mean to say…-" Uraraka trailed off.
"Shoto refuses to use his fire," Kagome stated. "It doesn't matter how strong he is, unfortunately. Without that balance, paired with his attack style, he lacks the endurance to keep it up for extended periods."
"I get it," Kirishima commented. "So, if Midoriya wants to win against the instant-killer Todoroki, then an endurance battle is the way to do it."
Kagome nodded, a frown on her expression. "That's if he can manage that feat."
000
"So, it's an endurance match you're after, is it?" Todoroki remarked as the icy air settled slowly. A few seconds later, he crouched. "I'll end this quickly," he stated as he sent another burst of ice along the ground. Midoriya reacted the same as before, using his smash to knock it into shattered pieces before it could reach him.
While he was distracted by the pain in his shattered fingers, Todoroki didn't relent. Using his ice, he created a bridge up off the ground. Midoriya noticed as he ran across it, reacting to block his attempts to get close with another smash. It shattered his pathway, but he jumped in time to avoid getting caught up in it. Upon spotting his way in, Todoroki aimed a punch toward the ground. Ice shot up at the impact, hurdling towards Midoriya at a rapid pace. In the new proximity, the ice reached him swiftly, freezing him in place mid-air by his foot.
Midoriya saw more ice shoot up behind Todoroki's back, as if he was anticipating another hit like all the others before.
"If just using my fingers doesn't do anything, then…-" Midoriya's thoughts cut off as he prepared a stronger smash by using his whole arm. Through the pain, he was able to see it had different results this time.
As the icy dust cleared, Midoriya was able to see that the split-haired boy had been knocked to the ground by the harsh wind. His barrier of ice had been knocked down slightly. Todoroki maneuvered a large pillar of ice from his lap, pushing it to the side as he stood back up.
"That was a lot stronger than the other ones," Todoroki stated. As Midoriya looked at him, he noticed the splotches of ice stuck to his skin in patches. "Are you trying to tell me to stay away?" he asked.
Midoriya stood stunned as Todoroki got back up on his feet with little reaction. For a moment, a thought raced through his mind. It'd always seemed too uncanny, but now that he knew the truth…-
It came as no surprise to know that Kagome was his twin, especially when the two were so alike when it came to their battle style and mannerisms. Their judgment, their instinct, their mobility… They were so similar in so many ways, that it was almost jarring.
"What?" Todoroki commented. "Are you that beat up from just deflecting and running away?"
Midoriya looked up at him upon catching the question. He was shocked when he noticed a change in Todoroki. Upon closer examination, it was possible to see the slight tremble he had.
"Sorry," Todoroki stated a few seconds later. "Thanks, Midoriya," he continued as he shifted his attention up towards the stand. Midoriya followed his gaze up automatically. He could spot Endeavor standing, observing the fight with a glower on his face. "That guy's face is all clouded over, thanks to you. He's been getting on my nerves all day with the way he's been treating her."
Midoriya gritted his teeth.
"With your arms like that, you can't fight anymore, can you?" Todoroki questioned. "Let's end this, then." With those words, he sent another powerful burst of ice hurdling towards the green-haired boy.
He didn't move at first, staring ahead as the icy attack raced towards him. Before it could make contact, Midoriya reacted. Even with his broken limbs, he still managed to send off another smash.
A hole was knocked into the middle of the ice, taking Todoroki by surprise. He hadn't been anticipating another one, and this time he was successfully knocked off his feet. Just before he could be knocked out of the area, a wall of ice caught him at the area's edge.
"Bastard…" Todoroki clambered back up onto his feet at the ring's edge. "With your broken finger…- Why are you going so far?"
"You're trembling, Todoroki," Midoriya responded. The comment took him by surprise. "Quirks are physical abilities, too. There's a limit to how much cold your body can take, isn't there" Midoriya asked, though Todoroki didn't respond. "Isn't that something you could solve by using the heat from your left side?" Though the comment angered the ice-user, Midoriya didn't acknowledge that. "Everyone's fighting with everything they got, to win and get closer to their dream, to become number one," Midoriya stated. "You want to win with just half your strength?!"
Todoroki offered no response as Midoriya picked his head up to meet his stare head-on.
"You haven't put a single scratch on me yet, you know," Midoriya stated. If possible, Todoroki's icy glare grew colder. "Come at me with everything you got!" Midoriya yelled.
Walking down the hall, Midoriya was startled to a halt when a large, imposing figure walked out from the connecting hall. The appearance was one he knew well, even if it weren't for the latest information he'd learned at the will of his classmate.
"E-Endeavor!"
At the outburst, the flame-covered hero came to a halt. "Oh, there you are," he remarked.
"Endeavor… what are you doing here?" Midoriya asked once he was able to get over his initial surprise. When the older man took a step towards him, Midoriya ended up taking one away from him.
"I watched your fight," he remarked. "You have a wonderful Quirk. You created so much wind pressure just by flicking your fingers," Endeavor stated. "If we're talking power alone, yours is comparable to All Might's."
The comment took him by surprise, and he feigned ignorance. "W-What do you…- What are you trying to say?" Midoriya asked, no longer looking up at his face. The next second, he moved to walk around him. "I have to go."
The way he talked was enough to reassure him that Endeavor didn't know about All for One, and that it was just him making an observation. Still… that was the last person who needed to find out about it.
"It is my Shoto's duty to surpass All Might," Endeavor stated. At the comment, Midoriya came to a halt. Those words left a foreboding feeling in his chest. "His match against you will be a very instructive test bed," Endeavor said. "Please don't disgrace yourself in it."
Todoroki's refusal to use his father's Quirk came back to mind, and, with it came other memories of his conversation with him.
"That's all I wanted to say," Endeavor stated as he started to walk away. "I apologize for bothering you right before your match."
"I…-" Midoriya began. The sound of his voice made Endeavor come to a halt. "...- am not All Might."
"That's obviou-"
"That's obvious, right?" Midoriya interrupted him. He turned to glare at Endeavor from over his shoulder. "Toodoroki isn't you, either!"
"Midoriya…" Todoroki bit out. "What are you planning? Everything I've got?" Anger spiked in him. "Did my damn old man buy you off or something?" he asked as he took off in a sprint towards him. "Now I'm angry!"
000
"Is it just me, or has Todoroki's movement become slower?" Kirishima asked. Kagome gazed down at the area below as the duo-color-haired boy sprinted toward Midoriya. There was no denying it.
"You're right," Kagome remarked from her seat. "Because of his ice, things like speed are being impacted. If something doesn't change fast then…-" she trailed off, not finishing her thought outloud.
She didn't want to doubt his ability to come out on top during this match, but…-
His stubborn determination to shut out their father entirely was only hurting him in the long run, and it pained her to have to be a witness.
The screen in front of him was the long source of light in the otherwise pitch-black room. His nails raked at the skin on his neck in agitation the longer he was seated in front of the computer.
"You must pay close attention. Shigaraki Tomura. These two could become obstacles."
The thought made him scratch at his neck harder.
Though research had been needed, information had come to light. It was frustrating, but for different reasons. Beside him, within view on the desk, was a photo of the raven-haired girl. This one hadn't been touched, yet it'd existed longer than any of the other ones.
"Annoying… how annoying…" Shigaraki grumbled under his breath, fingers stilling for a brief second. Though, as annoying as it was, there was also a brief feeling of satisfaction.
Of course, someone as fascinating as her just so happened to be the child of a pro hero.
Auroua-chan: The second half of Deku and Shoto's fight will be in the next chapter. I wanted to have it in this one, but this one got so long so quick, so I decided to split it up into two.
Anyway,!
Natuso and Fuyumi were able to see Kagome on the televised sports festival! Just like Shoto, they will also meet Kagome's primary family.
That's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
