"Rising Tensions"
By Elena Ibis of Thoth Familia
It has been nearly half a year since Loki and Eris Familia's historic dungeon dive, and much has changed in Orario since then. After nearly losing their lives on the 51st floor due to a lack of information, they had returned in both triumph and anger. In a public statement, Finn Deimne, the leader of Loki Familia, had denounced the Guild for withholding information too strictly from exploration familias.
The Guild has been known to only provide details on upcoming floors, prioritizing the closest ones while the further ones received far less. That policy had almost led to the trailblazing expedition ending in disaster after they had far exceeded their goal. The subsequent public outcry eventually led Guild Head, Royman Mardeel, to issue a public apology and implement a change of policy to allow information in full for up to ten floors in advance.
Since then, an era of justice had begun in Orario. At the forefront, the leader of Eris Familia, Satou Kazuma—otherwise known as the "Hero of Justice"—began a long and grueling campaign to push back at the evils plaguing the city. Despite claiming that it just happened spontaneously in front of him, Kazuma had been instrumental in stopping at least a dozen terror incidents, obviously having discovered the devious plots long beforehand!
Cowed by his near prophetic detective work, Evilus had been driven from the public eye, forced to slink around the dark corners where they rightfully belonged!
Not willing to take it lying down, however, there have been a few attempts on Kazuma's life. The most well-known occurred two months ago in the casino district. During the trip to allegedly "test his luck," Kazuma was assaulted by two competing assassins. If he had used his full abilities, he would have easily downed such evil-doers. However, in the interest of public safety and collateral damage, he sought another way. There, the Hero of Justice pitted the two assassins against each other! In their moment of weakness, he struck hard and fast, subduing them!
Unfortunately, the assassins—barely clinging to their disgusting lives—had narrowly escaped his venerable hand of justice. Even though he could have sought them out himself—and most likely succeed before the week's end—Satou Kazuma decided to give other rising stars a chance at greatness by putting out an absolutely exorbitant bounty using his hefty winnings from that night. Not only was it large enough to put a mid-sized familia on the map, but Tsubaki Collbrande had even promised two full sets of equipment—one for each assassin captured or killed!
It had put this reporter's heart ablaze to see so many seekers of fortune in the weeks that followed, guided by justice. While it is unfortunate that the bounty still hasn't been cashed in to this very day, it has prevented other would-be greedy and filthy assassins from testing their insufficient and lackluster prowess on our Hero of Justice.
Of course, that is not all that had happened in Orario as of late!
Having been completely overshadowed by Loki Familia's grand achievement, Freya Familia arranged an expedition to the deep floors in retaliation. However, before they could dive deeper than the 35th floor, tragedy struck, forcing the familia to retreat from the dungeon under unknown and rather suspicious circumstances. No official statements were released by Freya Familia about the incident, but my sources have informed me of several internal conflicts amongst the expedition, ultimately leading to its early dissolution.
With Loki Familia now placed firmly at the top of the city, Evilus had been driven even more into hiding. To further cement this, familias of all sizes have started pledging themselves to keeping Orario safe. First and foremost among them are Ganesha and Astraea Familia, both of whom have increased patrols to safeguard the future of our city. Already, many collaborators of Evilus have been arrested.
However, it is not just because of their valiant efforts alone!
Information provided by citizens has also been crucial, such as the tips from the mysterious Silver-Haired Masked Thief! Seen occasionally hopping over rooftops by eagle-eyed witnesses in the night, she has been known to sniff out the secret, scrupulous dealings of Evilus, causing great fear in those associated with those abominable familias. As always, if you know friends or family members who conduct these small deals with Evilus thinking that it hurts no one, convince them to stop! If you don't, they too might one day find themselves on the chopping block!
However, recently, ill-tidings have been heard, whispered on the streets and in taverns. Brutal attacks inside and outside of Orario's walls as well as in the reaches of the dungeon are starting to increase. It's a villainous call to arms, seeking to strike a blow back at the recent tide of justice. As such, tension has been steadily rising in the city of the gods.
But never fear, for Eris Familia is here!
Ever since their meteoric rise in less than a year, the great dungeon city of Orario had experienced one shock after another. This reporter has documented every single feat of theirs, accomplishments that have never rung out so clear in the history of the city before (back issues are available upon request to Thoth Familia. Eris Familia was first featured in issue 45678). From the inventions of Kazuma who enriched our lives with products such as board games and menstrual pads to valiant Aqua whose casual art has inspired many. Some say that looking at those pieces even empowered them to do better in their everyday lives and have even taken to visiting them routinely.
An explosion always rings out at noon, like clockwork. And that's because of the explosion extraordinaire, Megumin, who is always willing to showcase her magic for all to see (don't miss out on our exclusive interview with her on issue 45696). While other mages conserve their energy and hide their spells, she is always willing to inspire the next generation of spellcasters!
The valiant knight, Darkness, can always be found at the training grounds. However, due to her selfless nature, she always takes this time to train others instead of herself. While others teach by hitting wooden dummies, she does it very differently. She allows her students to strike her very own body! Not only that, but she even gives accurate and critical advice on how to inflict more damage! Such selflessness that this reporter has never seen before! Truly, an example of the exemplary men and women that fill Eris Familia.
Many have sought to join the ranks of their worthwhile family of adventurers, but none have managed so far. That's because only the best, truly shining examples of both strength and kindness, are allowed into their familia! Maybe you too might one day be allowed to join the grand aegis under the goddess Eris, but in that case, you will want to familiarize yourself with all the news issues regarding their accomplishments! Due to Kazuma's selfless donation of his invention, the printing press, we are now able to make copies much faster. However, supplies are still limited so act fast, otherwise you might have to wait for the next printing.

Rose
"...nine paragraphs on the past, one paragraph about the titled issue, and the rest is for propaganda and sales marketing." Rose lowered the newspaper with a frown. "Sounds about right."
There was a cheery laugh in the background.
"Geez, Rose! You look even moodier than usual!"
Rose dropped the newspaper and let out a long sigh. There was only one person who had ever spoken to her like that, and that was her childhood friend, Neze Rankett of Astraea Familia.
"Neze. You're back from your expedition already?"
Astraea Familia had undertaken an expedition recently to investigate a possible Evilus hideout within one of the safe floors of the Dungeon. The tip had come from the mysterious Silver-Haired Masked Thief, but considering Satou Kazuma had backed up the source himself by staking his reputation on the line, no one questioned the legitimacy of it anymore.
"Just got back, actually," Neze replied as she gingerly took a seat on the table next to her. "How ya been, Rose? I know I haven't dropped by in a while, but it's been so busy lately."
Rose glanced toward the mountain of paperwork on her desk. She knew how tied up Astraea Familia had been with Evilus these days. In fact, most of the paperwork on her desk was related to Evilus. A good sized chunk of it, however, could be attributed to a certain truant and his familia who kept skipping her meetings.
"Oh…" Neze grimaced. "That's rough. I guess you've been busy too, huh."
"Yeah." Rose sighed again. "I guess so."
"Kazuma still giving you trouble?"
"You don't know the half of it…" Rose grumbled in response. "Not only does that guy keep skipping my meetings, but he keeps avoiding me! Trying to get him to do paperwork is worse than pulling teeth!"
Rose ran a hand through her hair.
"And since he's so rich, he just pays off the late fees. The only way I can get him to sign his paperwork or show up to my primers is when I actually get my hands on him. It's like a never ending cycle of cat and mouse!"
Neze just laughed.
"You find that funny?" Rose glared daggers at her.
"Just a little." Neze gave her a bitter-sweet smile. "It's just rare to see you so invested in one of your adventurers, you know? Ever since what happened to Wirbel…"
"..."
Invested? Was she getting too invested? Damn it, she was, wasn't she? After all that talk about never getting too close to an adventurer again, here she was making the same mistake all over again. Neze was a different story since she already had a prior relationship with her, but Kazuma was someone who she had only met last year.
What the hell was she doing?
Didn't she already know that she was only going to hurt herself again in the end? Adventurers didn't live very long, and they'd all meet their end in the dungeon someday. Why did she have to care so much about whether Kazuma and his gang of idiots showed up to her primers or not?
Rose ran her hand over her hair again and sighed.
"...yeah, I guess you're right, Neze."
Before she even realized it herself, she had gotten herself too invested in one of her adventurers again. It was stupid to think that it would turn out differently this time since there was no end to adventuring. They wouldn't stop; they would go deeper and deeper until their luck finally ran out. The stories may have painted it as going out in a glorious blaze of glory, but she knew better.
Rose had seen the bodies herself.
"Hey, cheer up, Rose!" Neze put a hand on her shoulder. "It won't end the same way as before. Probably."
"I didn't realize you became a fortune teller, Neze," she dryly replied.
"My captain's got her eye on him, you know," Neze said with a laugh. "Isn't it obvious he's special by now?"
Neze wasn't wrong.
Kazuma and Eris Familia continued to break the norm and shatter records, starting from the moment they arrived in Orario. He wasn't just some run of the mill adventurer like Wirbel had been. It wouldn't be wrong to think of him as an honest to god up-and-coming hero. However, that didn't make her feel any better since heroes always took on the most dangerous of missions.
The fact that Eris Familia had already reached the 51st floor—with Loki Familia's assistance—after only a year was a testament to that. Kazuma and his familia could possibly be special, but that didn't mean anything in the face of their unforgiving occupation. How many had she seen lose their lives already? Far too many, if she had to count.
Even the mighty Zeus and Hera's familias had eventually fallen in the end, and they were thought to be all but invincible.
"...I hope you're right, Neze."
Rose really did. She didn't think she'd have the heart to keep at it with this job otherwise.

Alise
There was a large circular wooden table at the center of the room where the members of Astrea Familia were all gathered around. A map had been laid at the center of the table with a bunch of markings on it, detailing potential Evilus bases and sightings. Alise didn't really like having formal meetings like these—she preferred to keep things more laid-back—but they were still necessary at times, especially when dealing with a threat like Evilus.
The city of Orario had been making a ton of progress lately, meting out justice and punishing those Evilus evil-doers. A lot of it was thanks to Kazuma and his establishment of the AETF, the Anti-Evilus Task Force, which was currently made up of mostly volunteers from Loki familia, Ganesha familia, Astraea familia, and hired hands. The fires of justice burned so brightly within his heart that her junior was even willing to fully fund the AETF out of his own pocket.
"Alright, everyone. Let's talk about our next target," Alise began as she pointed out a specific location on the map. "Going off the tip from our mysterious silver-haired benefactor, there's a potential Evilus hideout here in the Pleasure District."
"Tch." Lyra clicked her tongue. "It's going to be a pain dealing with Ishtar in her territory."
Ishtar Familia and Astraea Familia did not exactly have the greatest of relationships after all. A lot of crime tended to happen in the seedier parts of the city like the Pleasure District so the two familias often butted heads.
"That's true." Alise nodded her head in agreement. "We can try to avoid a confrontation with them as best as we can, but don't let them get in our way either. They won't be able to refuse our entry since we have the backing of everyone in the AETF."
"...I wouldn't be surprised if Ishtar familia was aware of those hideouts and withholding information," Ryuu stated with narrowed eyes.
"Now, now, Lion," Kaguya interjected with a smirk. "Just because you're a prudish elf doesn't mean you can let your beliefs cloud your judgment."
Ryuu bristled at that and glared at the swordswoman in question.
"You know that's not what I'm doing! And I'm not a prudish elf!"
"Oh? I suppose you're right about that." The smirk on Kaguya's face grew wider. "I forgot that you had already given up your chastity to Kazuma."
The blush that appeared on Ryuu's face was so intense that she could have been mistaken for a tomato. She opened her mouth to respond, but for a brief moment, no words came out.
"T-t-that's not what happened, and you know it!" Ryuu adamantly denied once she found her voice and slammed her hands on the table. "I already told you all it was a misunderstanding!"
"Oh my! Still trying to cover things up?" Kaguya put a hand over her mouth and laughed. "I wonder how our dear captain feels about you stealing her man~"
"Why youuuuuuuuu!"
Lyra just sighed and gave a light-hearted shrug. "Looks like that's it for this meeting."
Alise just laughed in response. "I guess you're right."
She supposed that it was fine to have a break once in a while.
They had all been working extra hard lately dealing with Evilus after all. Neze had already gotten up from her seat and was currently in the process of trying to stop Kaguya from teasing Ryuu anymore before things escalated. It was never anything serious, but Kaguya just loved teasing Ryuu more than anyone. Even Alise had to admit that it was funny to see those two always arguing with one another.
"Although…all jokes aside, I'm curious." Lyra glanced over toward her captain.
"Hmm?" Alise tilted her head. "About what?"
"You know what. About our resident Hero of Justice."
"Kazuma? What about him?"
"How do you really feel about him?" Lyra asked as she watched Neze separating Ryuu and Kaguya. "The rumors are starting to grow after he was seen using your magic, Alise."
"He's my cute little junior!" Alise smiled. "And… I really want to see where his 'justice' manages to take him."
"Is that really all?"
"What do you mean, Lyra?"
"I'm just saying it's fine if that's all there is to it," Lyra answered as she watched Neze 'bonk' Ryuu and Kaguya over the head. "But if not, I think you should make your move sooner rather than later."
"..."
"With how quickly his fame is growing, the suitors after him will be increasing as well." Lyra turned her attention back toward her captain. "If you're serious about him, Alise, don't miss your chance and regret it later. That's all I'm saying."
"..."
After having said her piece, Lyra made her way over to Neze to help her with breaking up Kaguya and Ryuu.
Hmmm.
Alise blinked as she thought about it. Actually, that was a good question. How did she actually feel about Kazuma? If she were to be honest, she had never actually thought about it before. She enjoyed being around him, that much was obvious, but did she want more?
She enjoyed mentoring him and watching his growth as an adventurer, especially when he was working hard to accomplish his goals. And then there was the fact that he was one of the few people who actually seemed to 'get' her. It was really, really rare for her to find like-minded individuals, especially in this unjust world of theirs. Not only that, but they always had fun when they were together. The amount of times that he made her feel so excited was crazy, more than anyone besides her goddess.
Alise put a hand under her chin and hummed in thought.
In all honesty, how did she feel about Kazuma?

Bete
Bete Loga stood in front of The Moonlit Keep, his eyes tracing over the familiar outline of his familia's home. The streets were pretty much empty since the sun had already set. He wasn't sure how long he had been standing there in front of the doors. Hell, he wasn't even sure how many days it had been since he had last returned here; he had lost track after the first few weeks of drinking and fighting in the dungeon. He had slept in so many different places, most of them so dirty or disgusting that he wouldn't have done it sober.
In fact, today was probably the first day that he had been completely sober in over a month.
"...might as well get this shit over with," Bete grumbled to himself, just before he pushed open the Moonlit Keep's large double doors.
He stepped inside, tracking in his dirty footsteps. However, he didn't pay that any mind as he walked down the familiar path toward his patron god's room. Vidar didn't live in any fancy room or anything like that. Instead, the god stayed in a plain old room like the rest of the familia. That was one of the things that he respected about the god; Vidar didn't care about any of the bullshit and was always straight to the point.
The door to Vidar's room was already open. It sounded like someone else was in there, but it was hard to make it out. When he got closer and caught a whiff of the other person's scent, he couldn't help but grimace. Of all the people who could have been in there at this time, it just had to be Selenia.
Whatever. It was a good chance to knock out two birds with one stone then.
"We should think about what we're going to do about—" Selenia's sentence died unfinished in her throat when she noticed him step into the room. A myriad of emotions flitted across her face; surprise, shock, and regret…?
Vidar's expression was as statuesque as ever. His god never showed what he was thinking and had a poker face that was truly worthy of the gods.
"Bete," Vidar simply stated. "You've returned."
Selenia tentatively raised her hand toward him before pulling it back toward her chest, as if she was unsure about what to say to him.
"I wanna talk, Vidar," he gruffly replied.
"Speak then."
"I want to leave the familia."
"What!?" Selenia questioned, shock evident on her face. "Why?"
If Vidar felt any of the same emotions as Selenia, he didn't allow it to show on his face. Instead, the god simply regarded him for a moment in silence. Bete always hated it when Vidar did that; it always felt like the god was seeing right through him.
Damn gods and their divinity.
"...very well," Vidar eventually replied. "I will allow it."
"Lord Vidar!?" Selenia shouted, as if betrayed. When the god in question didn't respond, she turned her attention back toward Bete. "Why, Bete? After everything that happened, you're just going to leave?"
"..."
Bete didn't immediately respond.
Selenia was someone who he had known since the beginning. He knew that his personality didn't do him any favors, but she had still tried her best to involve him with everyone in the familia. She was a good familia captain, and if he were being completely honest with himself, probably his most important friend. At one point, he had thought that she, Vani, Jiruna, and the rest of the familia along with himself were going to become the strongest in the city.
Thinking back to it now, he had been a fool.
In this cruel world, only the strong survived. The weak had no place on the battlefield, no matter how hard he tried to drag them along. Jiruna and Vani were prime examples of that. Those weaklings… they couldn't even react in time, much less fight. They shouldn't be near the battlefield, much less be adventurers. They just needed to stay hidden away forever in their damn holes.
And if they wouldn't…he'd force them to.
"Why?" Bete forced himself to laugh. "Isn't it obvious?"
"What…?" Selenia looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?"
He twisted his lips into a cruel smile, baring his fangs.
"I'm sick of being held back by trash like you! Vani and Jiruna, always going on and on about their big dreams! All bark and no bite! What a fucking joke!"
He stepped closer to her, twisting his expression even more in spite of his tattoo—his fang—burning on his face.
"And you're no different, Selenia! Don't you have any shame? Going on and on when you're all no different than the trash on the side of the road!"
He raised his voice even more.
"Freezing up in fear because of Evilus! Dying so pathetically in some random ditch in the dungeon! I should have realized how worthless you all—"
A harsh slap cut his tirade short. Selenia glared at him with tears in her eyes. Her hands were still shaking.
"...how could you say something like that, Bete?"
He just cackled in response, ignoring the burning sensation on his face.
"What's wrong with calling trash, trash, huh?! Why don't you curse yourself for being born so weak and talentless instead!"
Selenia's hand shot up once again, slapping him across the face once more. Bete could have easily blocked it, but he didn't. He'd let her have this, at the very least. She couldn't even look at him anymore before she ran out of the room without saying a single word.
"I never wanna see your goddamn face again!" Bete yelled after her retreating form. "Never come outta your goddamn hole again, ya hear me!?"
Bete let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding in. As he watched the last of her form disappear around a corner, the realization of what he had just done was finally starting to settle in. He wasn't wrong. He wasn't wrong, damn it! So why did it still hurt so damn much!?
"...Bete, that was not how you should have gone about it," Vidar eventually commented. "That way of doing things will only hurt you and everyone else in the end."
"...piss off and unlock my damn falna already."
He didn't need Vidar to tell him what he already fucking knew. The fang on the side of his face was already burning more than ever.
The god simply sighed before he pulled out a small knife.
"I hope you find the meaning of your fang someday, Bete."
~o~
It didn't take Bete very long to find the person he was looking for.
The rookie he had met when he was in line at the Guild house on that random day had already established a reputation that far surpassed his own. Killing that bastard Olivas, leveling up in less than a year, clearing multiple Monster Rexes, and the list went on… Satou Kazuma and his familia were exactly the type of people he was looking for.
The kind of crazy strong bastards that he couldn't imagine ever losing to anyone.
"Bete?" Kazuma raised an eyebrow as he approached. "What are you doing waiting outside our gate?"
Bete got off of the wall he had been leaning against and stood in front of the Eris familia captain, looking him straight in the eyes.
"I want to join your familia."
Kazuma just blinked in response.
"...eh?"

Freya
From one of the highest floors in the Tower of Babel, Freya stared down upon the city of Orario. It was a very familiar action, something that she did often enough to spot those who could pique her interest. However, there was currently only one who she wanted to see, and it wasn't hard to find her from here. The brightest glow, brilliantly incandescent, was almost too easy to spot. Even as she watched, the muck that surrounded her seemed to lighten, her presence alone raising them from the mud whence they came.
"My dearest Aqua…"
Freya's ardor burned bright, and it wasn't simply one thing that she loved about her.
No, it was everything. From her beauty to her clumsiness, all of that made Aqua so irresistibly adorable that she could hardly hold herself back. Possibly the only reason that she hadn't stolen Aqua away was because a year had not yet passed since the girl's entry into the city. She didn't know—and couldn't find out—just how long Aqua had been in Eris Familia, so she erred on the side of caution. After all, a mortal could only leave their familia a year after they had joined; a rule that was implemented to prevent mortals from continuously hopping from one familia to the next.
It was only a little longer before a year's time, but it felt like forever. Of course, Freya could not abstain from being near her; she had visited her love frequently, both as a goddess and in her mortal disguise. They had even drunk wine together on this very floor of the tower and in her mansion. She had spoken to her and touched her, softly and gently, to engrave her existence on the girl's mind and to be the only one for her.
Yet, Aqua still couldn't get her name right, showing that her efforts had less than ideal results. Honestly, it was frustrating beyond all measure. She had done everything from seduction to outright saying her own name multiple times, so much so that it felt like she was speaking in third person. Not even writing down her name seemed to help, yet all of this was not done out of spite; it just seemed that the girl simply didn't care enough to remember.
That wasn't unforgivable, but it was certainly aggravating. The fact that she remembered Loki's name, but not her own was perhaps the most vexing of all.
If she took her to bed and the girl spoke out the wrong name, even her ardor would cool in an instant. When the act was finally committed, it needed to be in the best circumstances to create the most passionate of memories. There was only one chance to get it right since the memory would forever stay with her for eternity. As such, everything had to be absolutely perfect. She could not and would not accept any other alternative.
Only when the distant bright glow disappeared into a tavern did Freya finally turn her eyes away.
"Ottar," she spoke without turning around. "Why did my expedition fail?"
"...it is due to my incompetence."
The boar-like giant stood a few steps behind his goddess, waiting patiently like a statue. The expedition's failure—her commandment to him—weighed heavily on his conscience. He was ready for whatever punishment she would mete out to him. His loyalty was such that if his goddess told him to stay still like that, he would have stood there until his last breath, dying on his feet.
That was the expanse of his love—inexhaustible and enduring.
"You have always been a strong fighter, and I have already known that your leadership was your weakest point," Freya murmured, more to herself than him. "Do you think I would blame you for that?"
The boaz warrior stayed silent.
"Conflict among our familia is normal, but there is a time and place for that. To do so on an expedition that I ordered…" Freya turned around to look him straight in the eyes. "Have I been too trusting?"
Ottar quietly bowed his head.
Freya already knew what intentions that the leader of her familia had, but it was also a fact that the familia's healer had accidentally been seriously wounded to the point that potions could not solve the problem. It had required their fastest, Allen Fromel, to bring her back to Orario.
The expedition's end, however, came when they had nearly lynched the offender. It was almost too late by the time that Ottar intervened, though it shouldn't have gotten to that point in the first place.
"It's no fault of yours. You simply lack the skills to manage people," Freya said. "But you can learn them."
Ottar silently listened.
"Take the pallum girl, Liliruca, under your aegis. Mentor her; teach her well. Make sure she lives." Freya turned around and looked back out the window. "Maybe something will come of it."
"Does she have your interest?"
"No, but she's important to Aqua so, for now, she is important to me." Having not found the one she was looking for outside the window, Freya glanced back at Ottar. "But if she's hopeless, feel free to abandon her. I will think of something else."
The boaz warrior bowed his head once more.
"Your will shall be done."
