May the 4th to all of you! In honor of Star Wars Day and the release of the Bad Batch, I have decided to begin a story set in a galaxy far far away. This fanfic is set during Star Wars Rebels, one of my favorite Star Wars series to date. I love the lore and characters Dave Filoni had created, and brought closure to the Clone Wars (before it was revived). And to answer this question: Yes...this is somewhat of a Ezra x Sabine story, but don't get excited for something overly fluffy.
Enjoy!
Chapter 1
The Gauntlet, the former ship of the former Sith Lord Maul and formerly known as the Nightbrother. Floated through space quietly as one of its engines sparked and flames emitted from it.
After helping what was left of Phoenix Squadron escaped the clutches of the Empire, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Chopper departed the planet Atollon with the remnants of the Rebel cell. However during the battle, several TIE Fighters managed to deliver a few shots onto their ship, destroying one of its engines. To make it even worse, the hyperdrive was damaged in the process as well, so they unexpectedly dropped out of hyperspace mid-way with their allies. Now the Gauntlet floated in the abyss that was space with little power.
"Life support is still active." Sabine muttered as she checked the ships systems for like the hundredth time
"Good." Ezra replied as he leaned back in his seat, "How long until we run out of power?"
"At this rate…" Sabine replied worryingly, "A few days, maybe less."
Ezra sensed her fear and tried to comfort her, "Relax Sabine, Kanan will find us. They all will."
"Let me guess." she sighed, "Trust the force?"
"Well that depends, what do Mandalorians trust the most?"
"Their clan." Sabine retorted, "Which I just back only to get separated from once more...though that's not your fault."
Chopper, who was at a nearby terminal, made a bunch of beeping noises as he waved his mechanical arms frantically.
"What is it Chop?" Ezra asked him
"Chopper's picking up a nearby planet we can land on for survival." Sabine muttered
Relief quickly swept over the two as they realized they weren't going to suffer in the cold vacuum of space.
"What planet is it?" Ezra questioned, "Is it Imperial?"
Sabine looked at the data Chopper showed her, "Hmm, according to Chopper, the planet's located in the Unknown Regions."
"That means we're in the Unknown Regions too." Ezra muttered, "What else is there?"
"Not much." said Sabine, "Doesn't show up on any Imperial data banks."
"So, we stick to the shadows, avoid contact, and survive." Ezra muttered
"Pretty much." Sabine replied, "Chopper, set a course."
"Whoa whoa whoa, who said you can bark orders on my ship?" Ezra asked her, it was obvious he was joking a bit
"Uh, this is a Mandalorian ship." Sabine retorted, "And I'm a Mandalorian, so it's mine."
"Hey I'm the one who stole it from Maul." Ezra further added, "I used to get you and help from your family."
"You don't even know Mandalorian hardware." Sabine shot back, "So you're still alive because of me and my knowledge of this ship."
"It's mine!"
"No it's mine!"
Chopper then interrupted their childish conversation with a loud series of grumpy beeps. THe two turned to look at him.
"What!?" they shouted
Chopper then announced that they were approaching the planet, and soon entering its atmosphere.
They noticed that the planet was composed of five continents, one subcontinent, and various oceans. The terrain was a myriad of greens, blues, greys, reds, browns, whites, and tans. The planet also only had one moon, which appeared to be broken. Almost as if something rammed into it and shattered its side.
"What happened to the moon?" Sabine muttered upon looking at it
The two then heard an alarm going off on the ship's console. A system that was needed for planetary reentry was offline...the shields.
"Uh, should the shields be on for reentry?" Ezra muttered worryingly
"Umm…"
The Gauntlet began to enter the atmosphere with no shields protecting it. The front of the ship began to burn up on entry.
"We're burning up!" Ezra shouted
"Chopper! Divert all power to the shields!" Sabine ordered at the droid, who quickly got to work. The Gauntlet quickly stopped overheating.
"Hold on!" Sabine shouted as the ship crashed into the ground before stopping. The jolt from making contact with the ground made the two fly out of their seats. The ship stopped after a few seconds.
Both teens climbed back into their seats, a bit dizzy after the crash landing.
"You ok?" Ezra asked Sabine who was still getting up
"I'm good." she replied, "Let's see the damage."
It was already nighttime, with the moon handing in the sky. Ezra was currently moving supplies out of the ship along with Chopper, while Sabine was examining what repairs needed to be done. It was convenient that the Gauntlet landed in a clearing, allowing for them to set up camp.
Ezra put down the last crate they need to make camp before turning to his friend, "How bad is it?"
"Well the good news is that the Gauntlet is still fully intact." Sabine began as she approached him, "Flight, weapons systems, and other systems are still online. As for shields, I can get those back up in no time."
"And the bad news?" Ezra asked
"The bad news is that life support is down." Sabine added, "We can't go beyond the atmosphere, and the hyperdrive is damaged. Repairs for that will take longer. Even with those repaired, fuel is still low."
"Then it's a good thing I found spare fuel in the storage room." Ezra said to her
Sabine smiled, "That's good to hear. Now we just have to fix a hyperdrive."
"How long will that take?"
Sabine sighed while looking at the ship, "At this rate, forever. I'll drop a beacon for now. Until then, settle in for the long haul."
Ezra then looked at the surrounding forest, from what he could tell, the leaves of the tree were a bright red while the grass was a blueish-green. Closing his eyes, reached through the force to try and get a better understanding of the planet. He was surprised to feel a deep connection to it and the force. Light existed alongside darkness. However the darkness suddenly became more focused and concrete. Opening his eyes, Ezra noticed a massive wolf-like creature standing just a few feet away from him. It had black fur and white bone armor with red out linings.
"Uh, Sabine?" he said to his friend with slight worry
"What is it Ezra?" Sabine answered, not bothering to turn around
"We're not alone." he replied
Sabine turned to see the creature staring at them, "Whoa…" she muttered
The wolf growled a bit before looking at the young Mandalorian. It growled even louder before howling and charged straight at her.
"Look out!" Ezra shouted before igniting his lightsaber and managed to cut off the arm of the wolf. The creature howled in pain before Ezra slashed it in the chest, killing it. Just then, several more of the wolves emerged from the forest and attacked them. Sabine, using her jetpack, flew up in the air to avoid the claws. Using her two WESTAR-35 blaster pistols to shoot at the creature's heads. The blaster bolts did damage to their bone armor, angering them even more before Sabine threw several detonators on the ground. The bombs exploded, killing several wolves in the process. Until one of the wolves managed to slashed her with its claws, knocking her to the ground.
"Sabine!" Ezra shouted as he took down another wolf. He quickly tried to run over to her, but was cut off by several more of the creatures. As for Sabine, she landed on her back before getting back up to see the wolf who attacked her. Unlike the others, this one was bigger and had more armor on its body. The creature howled before charging at her. Instead of avoiding the attack, Sabine reached for something on her belt just as the creature reached her.
WHISH!
The creature stopped suddenly and fell to the ground. In her hands, Sabine held a lightsaber similar to Ezra's. The only difference was that the blade was a deep black outlined in white. Its sound was more of a whistle as well.
Ezra quickly finished off the rest of the wolves before seeing Sabine alive and well.
"The Darksaber…" he muttered, "I forgot all about that. Didn't you give it away?"
"Not yet." Sabine replied as she deactivated it, "What were those things?"
"I don't know." Ezra muttered before looking back towards the Gauntlet, "Chopper!"
The astromech appeared from behind a crate near the ship before making several, grumpy beeps at the two.
"Good to see you two buddy." Ezra retorted, "Whatever those things were, I could sense their emotions. Fear, anger, pain, sadness. It's almost like they feed off of it."
"Well, I highly doubt they're the only ones." Sabine added, "Until then, we should get some rest."
"You do that." Ezra replied, "I'll take the first watch."
Morning came rather quickly, as the two teens were now both asleep on the ground in the middle of the camp...until Chopper pinched Ezra's nose with his robotic arm.
"Ow! Chopper!" Ezra hissed as he woke up, the droid was laughing hysterically, but quickly stopped once he noticed the boy's glare.
Sabine, who was still sleeping, woke upon hearing Chopper's laugh.
"What's going on?" she muttered tiredly
"Oh you know." Ezra said, equally tired, "Chopper."
"Makes sense, so what do we do now?"
Ezra looked at her, "You asking me? We're stuck on a planet with scary wolves, with no contact beyond the planet."
"Then what do you suggest we do?" Sabine asked him, "Mr. Jedi?"
"Har har." Ezra retorted, "I say we look around. There might be more to this planet than we think."
Sabine thought for a moment before nodding, "That's actually not a bad idea. You and I will search the surrounding area for anything that might help. Chopper, you stay here, see if you can make repairs."
Chopper then made a bunch of grumpy sounds in annoyance.
"Because I'll be making sure Ezra here doesn't do anything reckless." Sabine answered while lightly punching the young Jedi's shoulder
"Hey!" Ezra hissed
Chopper made a sighing sound before turning back towards the Gauntlet, while the two teens made their way into the forest.
"This place gives me the creeps." Ezra said out loud as he and Sabine walked through the forest, "Something about this planet seems...off."
Sabine sighed, "I have to admit, I agree. At least the colors here are vibrant."
Ezra couldn't help but chuckle, "Of course you immediately think of art."
"It's what I do." Sabine replied, "Along with-"
"Let me guess, explosives?" Ezra guessed, smirking at her
"...Yes." Sabine grumbled, "We should head back to the ship. You know, before Chopper finds a way to fix it and leave us behind."
"Good idea."
Before the two could head back however, they heard the faint sounds of howls, screams, and gunfire off in the distance. The two turned back around to hear better.
"What...was that?" Sabine muttered
Ezra narrowed his eyes as his expression grew dark. He could feel the fear and negativity flowing through the air, "Nothing good. Come on!"
The boy then broke into a mad dash, leaving Sabine behind.
"Ezra, wait!" she shouted before getting on comms, "Ugh, Chopper stay put, we'll call you if we need anything."
Sabine followed Ezra through the forest until they came across a village. The place looked ravaged, several buildings were on fire.
"What happened here?" Ezra muttered in disbelief. Sabine then got a closer look with her rangefinder built into her helmet.
"More like happening." she said, "Several figures wearing white garments, red wolf symbols on their backs, white masks, robust-looking rifles. They're rallying hostages into the center of town."
"Sound like stormtroopers." Ezra chuckled darkly, "They're transports on the edge of the village."
Sabine then shifted her look to the edge of town, "It looks like they're loading cargo of some kind. Food, weapons, could be anything. I can think of only one thing…"
"Stealing." they both said at the same time. The thought both made their blood boil, reminding them of the treachery committed by the Empire on various worlds. Ezra finally had it and started to walk toward the village. He then felt a hand grasp his arm.
"Ezra what are you doing?" Sabine hissed at him
"Sabine, those people are being abused by those guys." Ezra said to her, "We have to do something. If it were the Empire, what would you do?"
The young Mandalorian sighed, "Alright, what did you have in mind?"
Roman Torchwick walked through the town as members of the White Fang raided various buildings in the area. Some of them were pulling families out of their homes and holding them in at the village center. While some were doing that, others were tasked with robbing various dust shipments that the town had, and were loading them on the bullheads they had docked nearby.
"Must you people be so destructive?" Torchwick muttered
"We think of it as payback, boss." a WF goon said to him, "These humans will be examples for our cause."
Torchwick rolled his eyes, "You sound like Adam now."
Suddenly, ever so faintly, Torchwick heard the sound of something spraying nearby.
"What was that?" he muttered, "Did you hear that?"
The goon looked at him, "Heard what?"
The sound came again, a bit louder this time, "Now I hear it. It's coming in this direction."
"Follow me." Torchwick ordered him and two other White Fang operatives. They rounded the corner of a nearby building, where they found the source of the noise: it was a figure in pink and purple armor, spray painting a purple symbol onto the side of the building.
Torchwick looked at her confused, he glanced at his party who simply shrugged in confusion. He then looked back at the figure.
"What are you...doing?" he asked in confusion
"What does it look like?" the figure asked, now identified as a female due to her voice. Though she sounds like she knew they were watching since they saw her, "It's called art."
"Well...stop doing what you're doing!" Torchwick asked, still in confusion as to what the point was of spraying graffiti, "You're coming with us!"
"Pff, ok." she replied before turning around her head and face were concealed by a pink and purple helmet, with a 't' shaped visor, "Make me."
Torchwick gestured at his companions, who raised their rifles at the girl. Once they raised them however, they noticed that she disappeared.
"Huh?" one of them muttered until they heard a whistle nearby. They looked over to see that the girl was now standing on top of another building. The goons then opened fire, but she easily dodged the shots before jumping back onto the ground.
"Heh, you call that 'shooting'?" she chuckled while leaning against the wall, "Looks like you guys could use some time on the practice range."
She then ran off deeper into the town, while an angered Torchwick got on his scroll.
"Adam, we have an intruder." he said, "Alter everyone at once."
Once was done, he and his WF companions ran in the direction the girl went.
"Over here, Skull Faces!" she heckled at them while running in the other direction, which prompted them to shoot at her
"You guys are too predictable!" she shouted from another direction, which angered them even more.
"What book did you guys read for combat?" she added, "It's probably a short one!"
"Argh!" Torchwick sneered in frustration, "How is she doing that!?"
"What's that noise?" a goon asked
They all looked back at the graffiti the girl drew on the wall nearby. As they approached, they saw a gray, semi-circular object stuck in the middle of the symbol. A red light was beeping, and picking up its pace every second.
"Oh no…" Torchwick's eyes widened upon realizing what it was. He quickly pushed his companion out of the way as he ran off.
"GET BACK!"
Just as he said those words, the object detonated. Destroying a good portion of the building while dispersing not only smoke and fire, but also a cloud of purple mist in the process.
The explosion was seen from every corner of the village. Not even a few seconds later, most of the White Fang was heading in the direction of it, including several who were guarding the hostages.
"Watch them!" a goon ordered to his men, while he and several others ran off. Once they disappeared, a boy in orange attire jumped into the scene.
"How's it going?" he said before reaching out with both hands, the rifles in all of the Faunus' hands were pulled from them and quickly tossed aside.
"Get him!" one Faunus shouted before they all charged at him. The boy did the same, while removing some hilt that was attached to his belt. The both did a spinning maneuver in the air, as the hilt he was holding produced a bright green blade that seemed to be made of energy. He managed to slash one of the goons before rolling under the leg of another. Before the goon could react, he felt something shove at full force into the wall of a building, knocking him unconscious.
Ezra smiled in satisfaction before turning to the hostages, "Get to safety! Go!"
He didn't even have to say it twice as they all started fleeing into the forest. Ezra panicked, knowing that those creatures were still in the woods.
"Wait!" he shouted, "Don't go in there! There are monsters in the forest!"
"We know!" one man replied, "But we have a safe house in the caves just outside town that are safe from the Grimm! We're heading there now! You and your friend deal with the White Fang!"
Ezra simply nodded before turning around to see Sabine finishing yet another starbird on the side of a wall. She then met up with him in the village square.
"Looks like your idea world out better than I thought." she chuckled
"Did you set the charges?" Ezra asked her
Sabine simply took out a detonator and activated it. The ships docked outside then erupted into an explosion, along with various colors. However, something on board the ships also produced ice, rocks, even electricity for a small second.
"Wow…" Ezra muttered, "What was all that?"
"I...don't know." Sabine replied just as surprised, "But I liked it."
Ezra then contacted Chopper, "Chop! Are you good on your end!?"
Chopper answered, to which Ezra replied with, "Good. Bring the ship around."
"So did you find anything about these people?" Sabine then asked him while removing her helmet
"Not much." Ezra answered, "Those monsters in the forest, the people call them the Grimm. As for the people attacking the village, they're called the White Fang."
"Speaking of the latter, we got company." Sabine muttered, narrowing her eyes at an approaching craft. The ship hovered in the air before its doors opened, and out jumped two figures. The first Sabine recognized as one of the men who was chasing her. He wore a white coat and bowler hat. He had fair skin, green eyes, and orange hair. His attire was partially covered in purple paint; a scene both teens found hilarious.
The second was a boy that seemed slightly older than them. He had spiky red hair, and fair skin. His eyes were covered by a narrow white masked with red outlinings. He wore black robes with a symbol of a rose on his back, a sword was firmly in his grasp. On top of his head, were a pair of horns.
"Hey buddy." Sabine said sarcastically to the paint-covered man, "That's a good look for you."
The man groaned, while the boy on the other hands growled in anger.
"Humans...how colorful." he sneered
"Well aren't you just a ray of sunshine." Ezra quipped, "But don't, my friend here might have color that fits you."
The boy growled even louder, Ezra then activated his lightsaber, while Sabine donned her helmet, and took out her blasters.
"So, what business did you two have in this town?" Sabine asked, slightly demanding
"I don't speak to lower life forms, human." the boy retorted as he pointed his sword at them, "These people were to be made an example. To show that the Faunus are superior."
"The what?" Ezra questioned before Sabine poked him
"Ezra." she muttered, "Look at his head."
The two looked at the boy's horns on his head, then the answer hit them both.
"You're not human…" Ezra said to him, "Who are you?"
"I am Adam Taurus, enforcer of the White Fang." he announced, "You have now been branded an enemy of the Faunus."
"Yeah...we have that brand from a lot of people." Ezra quipped, "So let's get this over with."
Ezra then used the force to push Adam back. The humanoid was thrown off his feet and shoved into a ground at full force. Once he got back to his senses, he noticed Ezra jump in the air with his lightsaber in hand to strike him. Adam rolled out of the way before drawing his blood red sword, he tried to slash at Ezra, but the young Jedi was proven to be far faster than him. Ezra then leveled his lightsaber and, just as Adam did the same. They both swung at each other, but as both blades made contact, Ezra's bright emerald green lightsaber simply cut through Adam's crimson red metal katana. The remains of Adam's sword fell to the ground, with an orange scourge mark on it.
Adam looked shocked at what happened. His expression quickly turned into a sneer
"You…" he growled
"Sorry." Ezra muttered before Adam pointed his scabbard, which was now shorter in length. Suddenly, he fired several bullets from it. Ezra surprised by this, but quickly rectified it by jumping in the air, dodging each shot before doing a spinning maneuver like he did before, and cut the weapon in half.
As for Sabine, she used her jetpack to get an advantage on the paint-covered man. She flew at him at full force, sending him flying into the village's fountain. The man lifted his cane of all things at her, and the bottom of it opened to reveal a small scope. A bullet then fired out and hit Sabine's chestplate, but did little damage, making her stumble only a bit.
"Argh!" she grunted before putting her blasters away
"You'll have to do better than that." the man chuckled
Sabine then drew the Darksaber in retaliation and flew at him once more, she then slashed his cane in two before knocking him into a nearby Adam.
As the two tried to get back up, they looked up to Ezra and Sabine pointing their blades at them both.
"Yield!" Sabine ordered
Adam heaved at them before sneering, "What kind of huntsmen are you?"
The two teens looked at one another before Ezra smiled while looking up in the sky, "We're not huntsmen...we're rebels."
With that said, Sabine grabbed him and flew up to a passing Gauntlet, leaving the two criminals behind…
