Chuck vs Egypt

Chapter 14

Once they had arrived on the boat, Sarah and Zondra had gone straight to their room. "What the hell, Sar?"

Sarah explained what she and Chuck had gone through, and therefore where Set had come from.

"You know that all sounds like fantasy or some crazy science fiction, don't you?" Zondra said.

Sarah shrugged. "Maybe, but Chuck and I experienced it together, so we weren't dreaming. And Seth returned with us."

"Mr. Broody," Zondra muttered.

Sarah looked closely at her friend. "Does he interest you?"

Zondra blinked. "Just because you fall for a guy, doesn't mean I do, too." She thought about the time that Sarah had been away. "Did you? While you were there?"

Sarah had always been good at hiding behind a mask for the job, but couldn't stop the flush on her cheeks.

Zondra eyes sparkled. "You did!" she exclaimed. "Was it everything you hoped for?"

Sarah smiled. "Better. He's the one, Zee."

The normally taciturn woman grinned and clapped her hands. "Good for you both! I take it he's thinking the same."

Sarah nodded. "We love each other."

Zondra pulled her into a hug.

"I'm meeting Chuck in the bar," Sarah said as they parted. "We've spent so much time together that parting is difficult."

"You'll have to share his bed, Sar. I don't want to watch or listen to the two of you."

Sarah wanted to, but… "He might have to stay with Seth, at least for the first night, to help him acclimate to being here." Sarah paused in thought.

Zondra misinterpreted what her friend was thinking. "I'm not sleeping with an ancient husk, if that's what you're thinking."

Sarah refocused on her friend. "He wouldn't, Zee. The woman he has always loved had left him. He came here with us because he's absolutely devastated."

Zondra thought about that and muttered, "Doesn't happen to men very often."

"Oh, come on," Sarah scoffed. "I'm sure it's very common."

"They usually bounce right back," Zondra challenged.

"Chuck didn't."

Zondra snorted. "And you think he's typical?"

Sarah smiled dreamily. "No. He's definitely not." She then thought of the Ennead. "Seth's thousands of years old and has been in love with Nephthys for probably at least a thousand of those. Now he's here in the twenty-first century, he's definitely not typical. He's the only one of his kind left here. The others must all be dead by now. He definitely needs our support. He needs friends."

Zondra took all that in. "I can be a friend."

Sarah clutched Zondra's arm. "Thank you, Zee."

"But you'll owe me one."

Sarah happily nodded, stood and pulled her friend up. "Let's go and drink to that."

"We have to change first," Zondra pointed out.

Sarah looked at what she was wearing. Modern clothing felt strange now, but she knew what she wanted to wear.

Chuck and Set had found the bar first. No sign of Sarah. Chuck was disappointed but guessed that she was having a long discussion with Zondra.

So, he introduced Set to twenty-first century alcohol.

Set raised his brows after his first drink. "What is this?"

"Whiskey," Chuck replied.

"It's good. Not like ambrosia, which I know I'll miss, but this will be good to drink." He finished his glass. "But maybe not all the time."

"Oh, we have plenty of other drinks, but I thought this would be good after the experience of coming here."

Sarah and Zondra walked into the bar. Chuck blinked when he saw Sarah in a stunning short dress that showed off her lovely long legs. God, he loved those legs!

Sarah grinned as she saw his expression.

Chuck forced himself to stand. "What'll you have, girls?"

Zondra raised a brow. "Girls?"

Chuck waved at his drinking partner. "You're young compared to my old partner here."

"Less of that, Chuck," Set warned.

"Sorry," Chuck muttered. Turning back, he asked again, "What'll you have?"

They were about to tell him, when Set said, "Can I try something weaker?"

Sarah looked at Chuck. ""What did he have the first time?"

"Whiskey."

Her eyes widened. "Well, you can't spend the evening drinking that. How about some red wine? I'll have the same."

"And me," Zondra said. "Maybe a Shiraz. That should be a strong enough taste to mask that of the whiskey."

Chuck called the waiter and ordered as the two women sat.

Looking at the Ennead, Sarah said, "You must be overwhelmed. We were."

"I was probably more prepared, but the noise and so many people!"

"This is quite quiet," Chuck said. "There'll be more during the day."

"It'll take some getting used to," Set said.

"You'll find the lack of a replicator hard," Sarah told him.

"I expected that," Set replied.

"Replicator?" Zondra asked.

"Like in Star Trek," Chuck said.

Zondra looked at the three of them. "So, no food prep or cooking back then?"

"It makes drinks, as well," Sarah said, "But it doesn't always get it right."

"Recreating what I ate and drank will not be possible here," Set remarked sadly.

"No, so you'll have to try lots of new tastes and decide what you like," Chuck said. "I'm still doing that now and I'm twenty-eight!"

Set didn't look excited by that.

"Do you like spicy food?" Zondra asked.

Set looked blankly at her. "Spicy?"

"Oh dear. This is going to be challenging," Zondra said.

"I'll try what you suggest," Set said.

The wine arrived and Chuck suggested Zondra taste it, saying, "I'm not a wine buff." She was pleased with being offered, and with the wine.

When Set tried it, he nodded. "It's good. I will definitely eat what you do, Zondra."

She smiled but warned him, "You might not like everything I do." Zondra then turned to her friend. "What do we tell Red?"

Sarah hadn't thought about that.

"Why does she need to know any more than everyone else?" Chuck asked. "Someone I knew in the past has reappeared and will be hanging around with us on the tour." He looked around. "It's true, isn't it?"

"Yes, but she, at least, will want more details," Sarah said.

"So, use what I'm setting up tonight," Chuck responded. "The home details."

"But what if people know LA? Carina certainly does."

They talked for the next hour to develop a believable backstory. Ideas were bounced around, some squashed, some accepted, some embellished.

Chuck summed up what they'd decided, "So, you've lived for some time in LA, but in a trailer park. You've just come into money from a lost relative, moved to the place I'll set up near where I live and you want to explore the world. I knew you from school." Chuck was pleased with the story.

"It's probably as good as it's going to get," Zondra said.

Set smiled. "You're not the most optimistic person," he observed.

Sarah laughed. "He's got you there, Zee."

Zondra glared at her friend. "You know this is seriously wrong, Sar. We're breaking so many laws."

Sarah did, but answered, "So, what would you have us do? He's here with us and has no one else to help him."

"I didn't mean to cause problems," Set said.

"Shush!" both women said.

Set looked taken aback. Chuck hastened to say, "In our time, women are quite forceful." He smiled as he said that.

"Obviously," the Ennead replied.

"I'm not going against it, but it is a serious situation," Zondra said.

Sarah sighed. "It is, but an important one."

"Tomorrow we go to the Valley of the Kings," Zondra said. She looked at Set. "Will you join us?"

"I have to." He looked at Sarah. "For the cover." She nodded and smiled at him. "What else could I do, anyway?" he asked.

Zondra looked at him, seeing how he sat, his uncomfortable posture expressing as much as his words. She found herself sorry for him, although that wasn't in her nature. She would have to think more about that when she was alone.

"The tombs will be adorned with carvings and images of the gods. They won't be as you and the other Ennead actually appeared, but the guides will probably point out which are which and tell more of their story, along with the pharaohs associated with them." Sarah paused and then added, "We'll be there for you, if you need us."

Set looked at her and then at the others. "Thank you. I'm not used to kindness. Appreciation from the humans who I interacted with, but not kindness." He couldn't continue. Thoughts of his earlier days with Nephthys just made the end seem worse. "I need to get some sleep." He stood, and Chuck did too.

Chuck looked at Sarah. "I'll see you tomorrow." Saying it made him feel upset, but he knew they had to part tonight.

She stood, cupped his face and gave him a lingering kiss. "Hopefully just for tonight," she whispered.

He hugged her and then pulled away. He walked off with Set.

Zondra had watched all of it.

Set had slept well, which surprised him.

There was much about this existence that was similar to his time, but a lot that wasn't. He pondered the differences.

One of the biggest was how his mind reading ability had changed. In his own time, he was better at doing that than many of his people, but here, he could read deeper. It had been a shock initially and he had to avoid sinking in too far or it would interfere with his normal interactions. The 'noise' from multiple minds was therefore something else he had to contend with and he'd had to build a barrier to those thoughts, but had only managed to dull that to a background noise so far. It added to the generally increased noise level of people and their traffic. He was going to have to get used to this.

Other than that, there was less moisture in the air, even here on the river, but that was inconsequential. Being unable to drink the fresh water was certainly different. The lack of tools he was used to was very frustrating.

As had been mentioned last night, the lack of a replicator was going to be difficult. That meant no ambrosia, which would be a real challenge for him. However, he knew these things were part of what he'd taken on. They might all be upsetting, but he'd chosen this new life, rather than stay feeling his wife was almost within reach. That would hurt more than this complete irreparable separation.

Nephthys would be long dead now. He had to stop thinking about that. When it had finally filtered into his head in bed, he'd cried himself to sleep. He'd not done that before. He was always strong, or angry. His sadness about her never returning to him had driven him to this venture, but even that was tinged with enough anger that he'd not cried. Her being dead was even more devastating than he could've imagined, somehow.

He looked at himself in the mirror before going to join Chuck and the others for breakfast. He'd changed his underwear and t-shirt for ones in his bag. He had pants that only reached his knees which would keep him cooler in the heat outside. He hoped this appearance would enable him to blend in with the others in the group.

Sarah had missed her boyfriend overnight. It wasn't just the amazing sex or the warmth he provided in bed, although both were significant. It was his presence that made her feel good. Good about herself, even. She felt loved when she was with him. She knew he still loved her when they were apart but when together she felt whole, no emptiness present.

She and Zondra had stayed awake for some time. Sarah had related what had happened to them in more detail. None of their love-making, obviously, but all the interactions with the Ennead and their technology.

Zondra still found it hard to believe, but Sarah knew she'd be the same if their situations were reversed. Hell, she still struggled with it herself and she'd lived it!

They were now walking into the restaurant area for the buffet breakfast.

She spotted Chuck and Set sitting at one of the tables away from the others. She hastily grabbed some things from the buffet and headed over to join them.

Set was staring at the food on his plate.

He'd followed Chuck around the buffet, but it hadn't seemed appropriate to ask questions. His persona in this time would presumably know what everything was.

Chuck had skipped over a number of items that looked interesting and initially Seth had planned to only eat what Chuck did, but the smell of some of the cooked food was too good to miss.

So, here he was with more on the plate than he could probably eat. However, some things may look or smell good but taste awful, so it was probably sensible.

"Hello, Seth," Sarah said as she arrived at the table with some fruit and a glass of what Set assumed must be orange juice.

"Hello, Sarah. Is that all you're having?" Set asked.

"No, I'm going to get coffee and two chocolate croissants as well. I just couldn't carry it all in one go. You've either got a large appetite or you're testing a variety of things."

"The latter," he replied.

Chuck stood and said, "I've been told they come around offering tea and coffee, which is why I couldn't find any earlier." He gently put his arm around Sarah's waist and kissed her cheek. "Hi, Gorgeous."

Sarah beamed at him as he pulled away. "Hi, Chuck. Missed you."

"Missed you, too," he said. He was sitting opposite Set and she sat next to him, their shoulders in contact.

"Don't start already," grumbled Zondra who put her bowl and juice down at the seat next to Set. "Hi, Seth."

"Hello, Zondra," he replied. He looked into her bowl.

"Yogurt and muesli," she said. She looked at Chuck. "Where do we get coffee?"

Chuck pointed at the waiter who was approaching them with a large flask. "Coffee?" he asked.

"Please," three of them said.

"Me too," Seth added.

"If you want milk, it's on the buffet, but I can bring a jug," the waiter offered.

"Please," Sarah said.

As the waiter went to get that, Chuck looked at her. "I thought you had it black."

She smiled. "I do, but I thought Seth might want to try it with milk."

Set looked at her. "Thank you."

Zondra looked at Seth. "How was your first night here?"

"Strange, but hopefully I will get accustomed."

Chuck knew better because he'd both heard Set crying and they'd talked about it briefly. Set looked at him and shook his head slightly. Chuck kept quiet.

Set looked at Zondra's bowl which she hadn't yet touched. "Wanna try some?" she asked. She grabbed his unused spoon and scooped out some of the mixture and handed it to him. She watched as he tried it. "I like it," he said.

She nodded to the buffet area. "You mix them yourself."

Chuck commented, "There's a fro-yo shop near the Buy More that my buddy Morgan works at. Lots of strange mixtures requested. Particularly by Morgan."

Sarah shuddered. "I hate yogurt."

Chuck looked at her. "I'll have to stop imagining you licking frozen yogurt off your finger."

She grinned. "Would you find that sexy?"

He nodded. "But then anything you do is sexy."

She bit into her croissant, slowly, looking at Chuck while she did it. He was frozen, watching her.

"Stop it, Sar!" Zondra hissed.

"Are they normally like this?" Set asked.

"She never used to be," Zondra growled. "He obviously brings out the worst in her."

"Or the best," Sarah said.

"Definitely the best," Chuck added.

"I might try this fro-yo shop," Zondra commented, as much to change the topic as anything.

"It's called Orange Orange," Chuck told her.

"Isn't that the chain where the girls wear tight orange t-shirts and very tight white pants that only reach their knees?" she asked.

"And orange pumps," Chuck said.

"Sounds like you are very well acquainted," Zondra teased.

"Maybe too well," Sarah muttered, glaring at him.

Chuck looked at her. "I'd probably never have managed to place an order if I'd seen you in that gear."

Sarah's frown disappeared and she grinned.

"Mind you, before that, it was a Wienerlicious. I now have the image of you in that outfit."

Sarah laughed. "Sounds like a bit of cosplay is in order when we get back to LA." His eyes really lit up.

"Ready for some tombs?" Zondra asked. She was looking up at Seth, but he knew she was deliberately changing the subject for all of them.

"I find this fascination with death rather disturbing," he said.

"These aren't just any old tombs," Zondra explained. "They are the tombs of pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians worshiped these men almost as much as they did their gods. They believed they should take their wealth with them, but also their stories. Tomb robbers, sometimes the academics that opened the tombs, stole the relics, but the murals and carvings are still there."

"The carvings and art work in those tombs are priceless in themselves," Chuck added.

"So, we're going to see these murals and carvings?" Set asked.

"Yes," three voices replied.

"Very well."

Carina walked into the restaurant while they were still eating. She stopped as she spotted them, looking surprised.

Walking swiftly over to their table, she said, "You both found men!"

Sarah could see the storm clouds building in Zondra's eyes. "I have, but that's Chuck's friend Seth who joined us last night."

Carina eyed Set up and then moved her focus to Sarah and then on to Chuck. "Well done, Chuckles. No one's been able to thaw Blondie out for a long time." She grinned. "I assume she's thawed out completely."

Chuck looked flustered, but Sarah answered. "Toasty."

Carina grinned. "Great!" She looked at her watch. "I need to grab a bite to eat before we go." She headed over to the buffet.

Zondra turned to Set. "Watch out for her. She's trouble."

Set was looking pale. "Yes," was all he managed to say.

Chuck was suddenly glad he couldn't read the minds of others.

Chuck and Sarah were seated together on the bus. Zondra and Seth were behind them. They were all sitting near the rear, away from the others, so there was no problem talking freely.

"The pharaoh Ramesses II went against the Osiris-loving past and focused on you," Zondra said.

Set frowned. "Why?"

"You were seen as the god of war by then."

His face darkened. "The lies spread by Osiris."

"Probably." She thought about the valley they were heading toward. "Maybe skip the tomb of Rameses II."

"Sounds like a good idea," he muttered. "It's going to be hard enough with this focus on death pervading the place."

"The artwork is going to be amazing, though," Zondra replied.

"Really?" he asked, doubtfully.

"You'll see. The descendants of those you were with included some amazing artists as well as architects."

They had stopped briefly on their way to the valley to look at the two amazing statues, the colossi of Memnon. These statues of the pharaoh Amenhotep III stood in front of his ruined mortuary temple.

"They obviously liked him," muttered Set.

"Or he liked himself so much that he made them transport the stones and carve these," Zondra said.

Their Egyptologist told them, "The statues are made from blocks of quartzite sandstone, quarried 420 miles away and transported overland as they were too heavy to have been transported upstream on the Nile. They are sixty feet in height and weigh seven hundred and twenty tons each. As you can see, one is made from a single stone piece, but the other has been rebuilt by the Romans from multiple pieces."

"Impressive," Set commented. "I wonder if the Ennead helped them, at least with the transport."

"I guess we'll never know," Chuck said as he joined the two of them. "Come on, we're getting back on the bus to continue to the valley."

The first tomb they visited was that of Rameses IV. It was amazing.

Ramesses IV apparently had a team of one hundred and twenty working on his tomb, which was two hundred and ninety feet long with three slowly descending corridors, followed by an enlarged chamber and then the burial chamber. Beyond that was a narrow chamber which couldn't be entered, with side chambers.

What was amazing was the scenes on the walls and ceilings, telling stories of the pharaoh. Some of it may even have been based on true facts, but most was definitely showing the mythology. The artwork was stunning.

In the middle of the burial chamber stood the sarcophagus, which was broken.

Set had to admit that the artwork was impressive, even if it did depict the mythology around his people's time with the ancient Egyptians.

He decided to try to distance himself from the mythological gods, which in itself wasn't difficult as some of them had the animal heads shown, but they weren't always depicted like that and he occasionally overhead guides mention who some of the figures were.

Thankfully, there were no paintings of him or Nephthys on the walls, and he was able to ignore the others.

Chuck had wanted to see Tutankhamun's tomb and remains, so had bought tickets for all four of them.

He was excited as they walked down the steps, single file. It wasn't a quick process as so many people were in front of them. Zondra and Sarah were in front, then Set and finally Chuck.

On one of the many halts, Set turned to Chuck. "So, this child became a pharaoh at age nine? That's crazy."

"Not only that, he was married to his sister," Chuck replied.

"And he died ten years later?"

Chuck nodded. "He changed his name and the main god worshiped. He was originally Tutankhaten. His father worshiped Aton, but he restored the temples of Amon."

"Why?"

"I have no idea."

The queue started moving again, so they fell silent.

The tomb was quite small so once they got down there, it didn't take long to see everything. The murals were stunning, of course, but the mummified remains, behind glass, were also of interest, although most of the body was covered in cloth. The head and feet were exposed.

Mummification was a complete surprise to Set, he would ask about this later. When they trooped out, that is exactly what he did, because they all decided to have a coffee before continuing.

Chuck answered him. "Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife when someone died, but only if there was a form the soul (they called it the ka) could repossess after death. They believed that the only way to do this was if the body was recognizable, hence the mummification."

"This was not something taught by the Ennead," Set said quietly. "We cremate the dead."

"Well, they got the idea from somewhere and it stuck with them."

"So, these tombs were to protect the mummified bodies from harm too?" Set asked. His three companions nodded.

After finishing their coffee, Chuck and Sarah went to see the tomb of Rameses II, the one that Set had been advised to avoid, but Zondra wanted to see another that had required additional payment and she'd bought two tickets, so she and Set went to the tomb of Rameses IV/V, another spectacular tomb with amazing murals.

Set found Zondra to be an interesting companion. She didn't talk much, which he appreciated. He tried not to read her mind. He was blocking that capability due to the large numbers of people in close proximity.

Zondra was obviously completely awed by the tomb, but didn't gush like Chuck had. Thinking about it, Set realized that Sarah had been quiet, too. Is that something about all women in this time, or just these two?

His question was quickly answered by the two couples that followed him and Zondra into the tomb. The men were relatively quiet, but the two women were garrulous, to put it mildly. He then wondered if it was Zondra and Sarah's jobs that caused them to be quite quiet, or if it was in their nature.

There wasn't much time left after those tombs, so the four of them waited for the rest of the group before hopping on the rides back to the bus parking lot.

Before returning to the boat, they visited the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh. Her tomb was included here, beyond the Valley of Kings, presumably separated due to her sex. It was an impressive piece of architecture with three massive terraces rising above the desert floor and into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari.

It included shrines to three gods of importance to Hatshepsut: Hathor, Anubis and Amun. Having met all three of them, Sarah couldn't help thinking of the real Ennead rather than their mythological characters. She already missed them, even though she didn't really know two of them that well. However, Hathor, in particular, had been a friend.

Reaching the first terrace and seeing the shrine to Hathor, Sarah felt tears trickling down her cheeks thinking that the Ennead, who she'd only hugged the day before, was now long dead.

Chuck wrapped his arm around her and pulled her in for a hug. She buried her face in his chest, knowing he understood how she was feeling.

Others walked around them, giving them odd looks, but fortunately none approached them to ask what was wrong.

Because of how Sarah felt, the two of them didn't mount the steps to the second terrace, but walked back down and headed to the café.

Already sitting in the café with an ice cream in his hand, they found Set. He looked up as they walked to his table. "I couldn't face going in the temple. Shrines to people I knew were just too much."

"I started crying when we got to the shrine for Hathor," Sarah confessed.

Set looked almost tearful himself.

"We'll leave here soon," Chuck said. He looked at Sarah. "D'you want an ice cream?"

She looked thankfully at him. "Please." She looked at what Set was holding. "What've you got?"

"Mango ice cream lolly," he replied. "I had no idea what it was or would be like, but I like it."

Sarah grinned and looked at Chuck. "I'll have the same."

She turned back to Set. "How're you coping?"

He took a lick of his lolly before answering. "Struggling to stop it dripping on me. It melts quickly, even here in the shade."

She laughed. "That's not what I meant, but you're right. Ice creams of any sort in this heat is a challenge."

He smiled and then answered her real question. "Seeing the names of Ennead, and even their mythological images, is quite a painful experience. Knowing they're all dead now is heart-wrenching." He licked the lolly again before adding, "Even Osiris."

She placed a hand on his free wrist. "It must be."

"I'm the only one left," he said quietly.

A drip from his ice cream landed on the back of his hand, just missing Sarah's. She withdrew her hand and he licked the ice cream to remove other drips before licking the back of his hand.

"If you want to talk about it, I'm here," Sarah offered. "Chuck is too, but I know more of them."

He looked at her and even though his pupils were as black as his irises, she felt she could see the loss. It wasn't just the loss of his wife; it was everything and everyone he knew.

"Thank you, Sarah. I probably will." He paused for a moment. "At some time, I'd like to know how Nephthys was when you saw her, but not yet. It's all too raw at the moment."

Chuck arrived and handed Sarah her lolly. He had the same. "After this, we'll return to the boat for lunch and then the cruise will start." The two of them looked at the Ennead to see his reaction to the concept of a cruise.

"I look forward to that," Set said.

"It's hard seeing reminders of those that are no longer with us, isn't it?" Chuck said.

"It is," both replied.

"My parents died when I was eleven," Chuck said. "My sister and I had to move to get away from the home where everywhere we looked, we saw something reminding us of them. Dad's mom took us in, but even then we saw reminders of dad. It was hard for quite some time. When she died, we moved to a small apartment in a rough part of LA, but Ellie was old enough to be seen as my guardian by then."

This was more than he'd shared with Sarah before.

He continued, "However, we still have things with us. Mementos. We can now look at them fondly, remembering the good times with mom and dad, and gran. It just took a while."

"You're dripping," Sarah said.

Chuck looked down at the small pool on the table. He quickly started licking his lolly to prevent the loss of any more, while using the paper napkin he'd brought to mop up the mess.

"I know that I will come to terms with it all, but it is hard at the moment," Set said after finishing his lolly.

"You can turn to us for any emotional support you need," Chuck said.

Set smiled at him. "Thank you. Both of you. I might be leaning on you both, particularly while here in Egypt."

"Anything you need," Chuck said.

Sarah nodded. "I'm not used to it, but the same goes for me."

Set looked at her. "I get the impression you and Zondra lead very different lives to Chuck here."

She thought about that. "Zondra and I face the darker side of humanity in our jobs. It makes you somewhat jaundiced. My past wasn't great, either." She looked briefly at Chuck. "I haven't told Chuck any of that and should before sharing, but until I met him, I'd never really been happy."

Set nodded. "Something good that's come out of the ancient past?"

She grabbed Chuck's free hand. "I'd like to think we'd have gotten together fully by the end of the tour, but our time in the past accelerated things."

"Good," Set replied. "And I think coming back here with you will be good for me… eventually."

There was nothing either of them could say to that.

Half-an-hour later, Zondra found them. "Come on, you three. We need to get on the bus. Lunch awaits."

Set was hungry, but wondered what he'd be eating.

A/N: I loved the Valley of the Kings.

Are you happy they're back on the tour? What d'you think of the new addition to the team?
