Seeing demons could be annoying, Xander decided, as he spotted a female demon taking one of the same classes he was on his first day at UC Sunnydale. Especially since there wasn't anything he could do about Kathy Newman while they were in class. Afterwards though, he caught up with her.
"Can I talk to you for a minute? Privately." He asked, politely. "I'm Alexander Harris, we have class together."
"I remember seeing you." Kathy nodded. "Sure, I've got a free anyway. Did you need some help with the assignment?"
"No, I just wanted to let you know that I'm aware of the fact that you're a demon. What kind, I'm not sure. But I can see your other face. Word of warning, there are others around Sunnydale that will also be able to see your other face. We're going to be keeping an eye on you, like we do all demons that pass through Sunnydale. For the record, vampires are automatically destroyed on sight. Demons are researched to determine if they're a threat. If we determine that you're a threat or catch you harming a human in anyway, you will be destroyed. This is the only warning you get."
"You can see - ?"
"The glowing blue eyes, the veiny skin, torn skin look? Yes. So what kind of demon are you? A little good will can go a long way here."
"Mok'tager, we're from another dimension. We don't prey on humans, no need, you have nothing that could sustain us anyway."
"A Hell dimension, like where the Hellmouth goes?"
"Hellmouth? There's a Hellmouth around here?!" Kathy had been wary of the human boy and his ability to see her. That he didn't attack her on sight and just delivered a warning had her relaxing a bit and trying the good will approach, but a Hellmouth?!
"Yeah, unfortunately we've had some problems with some who try to open it. A vampire and the Sisterhood of the Jhe, specifically."
"I've heard of the Sisterhood, they exist solely to create apocalypses. How did you stop them?"
"Destroyed every one we encountered in our town before they could find and open it."
Kathy felt a chill of fear go through her, how had humans managed that? Jhe were strong! "What are you? Why does it matter to you?"
"I'm what's known as a Grimm, have you ever heard of the Grimm?"
"Yes, we avoid contact with your dimension because humans have no interest for us, but from time to time it has happened. Enough that we learned of the Grimms and the Slayer, both. I don't want to hurt anyone, I just want to experience life away from my people."
"Well, like I said, as long as you don't hurt anyone, we won't come after you."
"But my father will. He considers me too young to leave home. I had planned a means of hiding from him, but if you can see my true face, I'm uncertain I'd be able to hide from you and you could lead him to me."
"A worried father looking for his daughter? Yes, I would and to date, I haven't encountered anything I can't see a demon through, including a soul, since I couldn't even see the soul."
Kathy was already wavering on whether to stay in the human world, a Grimm who could see her demon face, others who could see her and a Hellmouth, all added up to, this was a bad idea. It wasn't like she wanted to be prey for anyone herself. But hearing that he'd see her regardless of if she had a human soul or not, made her decide to abandon her plan to steal her roommate's soul to hide from her people. This Grimm would see her father or his employees and lead them straight to her and even if they couldn't see her because of the human soul, the Grimm would. Her shoulders slumped. "I think I'll just go home. Between Grimms who can see me and my father looking for me and a Hellmouth that some demons want to open, I think I picked a bad place to try to experience the human realm. Maybe I'll try again some place else. Pylea might be a nice place to try, they have the Grooselug tournaments, I hear they can be very exciting."
"I'm not familiar with Pylea or a Groosalug, so I can't comment one way or another. Maybe once your father lets up, you can try again. Just keep to that no hurting humans thing and you never have to worry about Grimms or the Slayer having a reason to come after you."
"I appreciate you not killing me on sight and giving me a chance."
"The only reason I would have to kill you on sight would be if I saw you hurting a human or had reason to believe you'd already hurt or killed someone. It's why vampires are destroyed on sight, after all, because we know they hurt, torture and kill humans. My partner and I destroyed a nest here on campus last week that had five vampires in it. They'd actually taken over a former fraternity house and were preying on students. If you did stay, you'd see us doing regular patrols around the campus at night to make sure another nest doesn't get set up like that."
Kathy decided she'd made the right choice. Sooner or later her father would come looking for her and the Grimm would lead him right to her. She could kill him, but he'd said there were others, likely his partner was a Grimm too and would be motivated to find who killed him. Not that killing him would be easy if the stories were true.
"I'll be gone in less an hour. It won't take long to pack what I have. Pylea is sounding better every minute."
"I'll just come with to be sure. I'm sorry, but I don't really have a reason to just trust you."
"No, you don't. Once you've researched Mok'tagers you'll know I didn't lie, but I'll be gone before then." Kathy agreed and let Alexander escort her back to her dorm room, where he stood in the doorway and watched her pack and then open the portal back home. Yes, Pylea sounded much more fun than a town with Grimms and a Hellmouth in it.
Yes, seeing demons could be annoying, Xander decided, but also really weird, because it seemed some of them weren't that different from humans. Kathy, if that was her real name, just seemed to want an adventure and had an overprotective father that worried about her. He wished her luck and his research later confirmed Mok'tagers didn't prey on humans, so letting her go seemed the best solution.
