Marcel led the way to the room on top of the church, where he was keeping Davina. Elena and Rebekah were right behind him. "Just tread lightly. She's been through a lot, and she's not very trusting, especially of other witches."
"We'll follow your lead," Elena assured him.
"For now," Rebekah added.
Once inside, Marcel saw Davina. She was sitting in a chair, which she immediately stood from when she saw that he wasn't alone.
"Marcel?" Davina asked concerned.
"It's okay, D. They're not going to hurt you. They're here to help," Marcel assured her.
Davina looked directly at the dark-haired girl. She was a witch, a strong one. Davina could sense nothing but power coming off of her. "She's a witch."
Elena tentatively took a step inside but kept her distance so she didn't spook the girl. "I am a witch, Davina, but I don't mean you any harm. I just want to talk to you. My name is Elena Mikaelson."
Rebekah tried to walk inside, but she couldn't. She needed an invitation. "Elena, I can't get in."
"Davina, invite my friend, Rebekah in. I promise that she won't hurt you," Marcel assured her.
"You can come in," Davina said hesitantly.
Rebekah walked inside and went over to Elena.
"Is she the witch you were telling me about?" Davina asked Marcel. Marcel had told her a couple of days ago about a new witch in the Quarter, one he couldn't control.
"Yeah, but you don't have to be afraid. I talked to her tonight. She doesn't want to hurt you. She was actually concerned for you," Marcel said.
Davina looked suspiciously at Elena. "Why?"
"Because I don't like children being used in a political war, which seemed to be what was happening at first. When I spoke to Marcel, I realized it might even be worse than that, but I need to hear the truth from you. I've heard sides from Marcel and the New Orleans' witches. You're the only one who can tell me what actually happened," Elena said.
"Why should I? Why should I trust you?" Davina asked.
"I know you have no reason to trust me. The only thing you know about me is that I'm a witch, and I'm guessing you're not very fond of witches right now. But not all witches are bad. I want you to tell me the truth so that I can help you. I'm in a position to do that," Elena said.
"D, she's a powerful witch, more powerful than the other witches. She may even be more powerful than all of them combined. Her family is powerful too," Marcel said. He wasn't sure he fully trusted the Mikaelson's, but he'd seen the look in Elena's eyes when he told her about the Harvest Ritual. She was livid. No matter what else, he was sure she was not on the side of the other witches.
"Davina, right now, all I'm asking is for you to confirm what Marcel has already told me," Elena said.
Davina nodded after a moment. If Marcel had already told her, there was no harm in just confirming it, so she did. She told her everything that happened from the moment she found out she was participating in the ritual until all her friends were murdered. "We didn't know that was going to happen. Then they were just dead."
Elena was furious. She had been pretty sure that what Marcel had told her was the truth, and it infuriated her, but it was worse actually hearing it from the young girl that had to live through all of that. She wanted nothing more than to round up each and every New Orleans witch and murder them all. "I'm so sorry, Davina. This never should've happened."
"Do you know what it's like to have your own mother try to have you killed?" Davina asked in tears.
"Yes, I do," Elena said quietly. She found she had quite a few things in common with this girl, including the indifference that they were treated with by their own mothers. At least Elena had her father afterwards to help her through it. With the exception of Marcel, Davina was alone.
"Really?" Davina asked in surprise.
Elena nodded. "My mother wanted nothing to do with me when I was born. No, it was actually worse than that. She wanted me dead. When I was born, she gave me to a witch with the belief that she'd have me killed. My adoptive father and his brother also wanted me dead."
"Why?" Davina asked curiously.
"Because of what I am. I'm not just a witch. I'm also part vampire. My father is a vampire, and my mother was turned just after I was conceived," Elena explained. This wasn't something she offered up to many people, but Davina was starting to trust her. The least she could do was offer her trust as well.
"But how is that possible? I thought vampires couldn't have kids," Davina said.
"That's the consensus. As far as I know I'm the only one of my kind. It turns out it can be possible with magic. My mother wanted to trap my father with a kid before she found out what he was, so she went to a witch to ensure she'd get pregnant. When she found out the truth, she hated me," Elena said.
"I'm assuming this woman is already dead, so I can't kill her myself, right?" Marcel asked. He abhorred people who harmed kids, and the fact that Elena was technically a family member made it that much worse. However, he was fairly certain Elijah would've killed anyone who became a threat to his daughter.
"You have met my brother, right? Of course, she's dead. He would never allow anyone who harms his child to go on unpunished. That's something you should keep in mind," Rebekah told him with a smirk.
Marcel grimaced. Yes, he was well aware that Elijah Mikaelson was going to have more than a little to say about his attempt on Elena's life.
"I'm sorry," Davina said to Elena.
"It's okay. I got through it. I have a father who stood by my side through it all and made me see that what other people did wasn't my fault. You don't have that, so I'm going to say it. What those witches did was on them. Don't take responsibility for it," Elena said.
"My own mother believed more power was more important than my life. I mean, I guess she believed that I'd somehow come back, but she was willing to risk my life on that blind faith. She cared more about that than me," Davina said miserably.
"I know. Believe me, what you're saying to yourself, I did too. My mother was a horrible person. I knew that before I even knew she was my mother, but it still broke something inside of me to know that she wanted to hurt me. It made me feel horrible about myself. If it weren't for my dad, that feeling might have consumed me. What your mother did was her fault, not yours," Elena said firmly.
"Thanks. Do you really think you can help me?" Davina asked.
"I will. I'm not entirely sure how yet, but I will. Those witches won't hurt you again," Elena promised.
"I'll be right back soon, D," Marcel said before motioning for Elena and Rebekah to follow him out of the room. "Thank you for being so nice to her."
"I know what she's going through. I won't let it consume her. But she can't stay here, Marcel," Elena said.
"No, it's okay. She's safe here," Marcel assured her.
"That's not what I meant. She's a teenaged girl. You can't keep her in that room forever. It will just become a prison for her, if she doesn't see it that way already," Elena said.
"I know it isn't the best solution, but there's no other option. I can't bring her back to the house because it's the first place the witches would look. I can't take the risk that they would find a way to get their hands on her," Marcel said.
Elena was quiet for a minute as she tried to contemplate other options. Her first thought was to kill the other witches, but that would probably bring more attention to her than her family would like with Dahlia out there. "Maybe she can stay with us for a while. I can protect her."
"Elena, I don't want to seem insensitive, but we have our own enemies to deal with. I'm not certain inviting a teenager to live with us under those conditions is best for her or us," Rebekah said.
"What enemies? You brought your enemies into my city?" Marcel asked irritably. The last thing he needed was to deal with enemies of the Mikaelson's. He had enough to deal with.
"No, we tracked the enemy here. That's what I was doing when you tracked my magic the first time we met. I was looking for someone. Let's just say that Davina isn't the only witch being targeted for her power," Elena said before turning to Rebekah. "I know we have our hands full, and I also know it might not be the safest option to have Davina with us, but it's better than leaving her here.
"Wait, I wanna know more about this threat that you're talking about before I even think of trusting you people with Davina," Marcel said.
"The threat is after me, not her, and I have no reason to believe this person has even discovered my existence yet. Look, it would only be until I found a way to deal with the other witches," Elena said.
"Why won't you tell me who this threat is that is after you?" Marcel asked.
"Because I don't know if I trust you yet. You did try to kill me. Look, why don't you just come with us and talk to the rest of the family for now? We can figure the rest out there," Elena said.
Marcel looked extremely nervous. The last thing he wanted right now was to be in the general vicinity of Elijah Mikaelson. He was a powerful vampire, and he knew it, but he was not deluded enough to think that he was stronger than the Originals. "Uh, maybe you should explain things to your family by yourself for now."
Elena smirked. "Aw, is the King of New Orleans afraid of my daddy."
"Yes," Marcel said matter-of-factly.
"Then you're not as dumb as I thought you were. Come on. I won't let anyone kill you. Although, I don't promise not to let them hurt you a little," Elena said with a wry smile before heading downstairs to the church with Rebekah right behind her.
Marcel reluctantly followed them.
