Chapter 1: Scent of Danger:

Nancy's POV:

Shaun and I were getting ready to go to Pop Tate's.

"Hold it," says Dad, "aren't you kids forgetting something?"

"I don't think so," I said.

"I got my phone," says Shaun.

"Here's a hint, Habari Gani," says Dad.

We then thought about it. "Right... Kwanzaa," I said.

"Dad, it's not like it's only one day a year," says Shaun.

"Look, speaking as the white side of the family," says Dad, "this was from your mother's side and is a part of your heritage and Nancy, it's also a part of your Birth Mother too, so that counts!"

"Okay, we'll be back," I said.

"Right now, George has something big to tell us," says Shaun, "later!"

We then walked out.

. . .

"Dad sure gets weird about Kwanzaa," says Shaun, "he's not even black."

"Yeah, but you know," I said, "it mattered to Mom."

. . .

We were at Pop's and George showed us the new phone she got. "Okay, I admit," says George, "this was not big announcement worthy. Sorry."

"I do love it," says Bess.

"Yeah, that is pretty cool," says Ned.

Then this guy came in. "Nancy Drew?"

"Yeah," I asked.

"My name is Owen Harris. I thought you'd be working in an office..."

"This pretty much is her office," says Ned.

"And she couldn't afford a black and white scenery, or jazz music, or a narrator," says Bess.

Wait, I am doing that narrating thing. I guess I can afford it.

"Well, I work at the zoo," says Owen, "and four wild cats have gone missing, and everyone thinks I did it! I need your help!"

On one hand, we told Dad we'd be back... well, we could just get back home and then get to the case. "I'll take it," I said.

. . .

Shaun and I got back home. "Good, you're back..." Dad begins.

"Talk later, Dad," I said.

"We got a mystery," says Shaun.

"UUUUUUUUUhhhhhhhhh... okay..."

We then left.

To Be Continued
