Title: Happy Birthday, Harry
Harry wasn't sure how he knew when his birthday was. His Aunt Petunia must have mentioned it and he held onto the information, but ever since he could remember he celebrated his birthday and this year wouldn't be any different. He started his morning off like any other. He made breakfast for his aunt and uncle, along with his cousin, Dudley, who had a second helping of everything before starting on his chores for the day. He cleaned the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms before vacuuming the living room and the bedrooms. Harry soon moved on to sorting out the laundry and putting a wash on before making his way outside to wash the car and work on Aunt Petunia's garden.
Once Harry was finished pulling out all the weeds and watering the flowers that Aunt Petunia would be putting in this year's 'Full Bloom' competition, he went back inside to finish up the rest of his chores before starting on dinner. Since it was his birthday, he decided to cook a meal that he really enjoyed, pasta with garlic bread. He even made more than normal in the hopes of getting the leftovers. No such luck. The moment his uncle came home from work, Harry knew he wouldn't be getting any food. He watched in disappointment as his uncle sat down and loaded his plate up with pasta, same with Dudley. Harry crossed his fingers, hoping that Aunt Petunia would be on one of her many diets and simply tell him to get her a glass of water as she pushed her plate away. Once again, Harry's wish wasn't granted as he watched his aunt take the rest of the pasta and the last piece of garlic bread.
Harry stood idly by as he waited for his family to finish their supper, his heart dropping even further when his uncle pulled out a box of cupcakes, explaining that it was for Dudley for getting a D on his spelling test. Harry kept silent, not wanting to get in trouble as he had his normal supper, a glass of water with a piece of stale bread until it was time for him to clean up the table along with the cupcake that was now on the wall since Dudley threw a tantrum over the fact that the icing wasn't his favorite flavor.
"I want this mess cleaned up and you in bed by the time we get home, you hear me boy?" Harry heard his uncle yell from the front door before he slammed it shut with him and Aunt Petunia taking Dudley out for a new treat or a new toy or anything that would stop the tantrum he was currently having.
Harry did what he was told, quickly washing the dishes, drying them and putting them away before getting a small plate out and scooping the smashed cupcake off the wall on to it along with the icing. He used his finger in an attempt to smear the icing around the remains of the top the best that he could. He quickly cleaned the remaining bits of cupcake off the wall before going into his cupboard for the rest of the night.
Harry placed the cupcake on his mattress before digging though his secret box and pulling out a birthday candle he had taken from Dudley's birthday cake last year. He stuck it into the cupcake before pulling out a flat object that was badly wrapped in christmas paper and set it down next to the cupcake.
Harry smiled in excitement as he sat down on his mattress and picked up his cupcake. "Happy birthday, Harry," he said quietly to himself before closing his eyes, making a wish and blowing out the imaginary flame on the candle and digging in. The cupcake tasted amazing, sweet and fluffy, it was everything Harry hoped it would be.
Next came the present, it wasn't much, a torn up book that Dudley had ruined because he was having trouble reading some of the words. Harry managed to dig it out of the trash one night and used some leftover wrapping paper from christmas to wrap it up for himself. "You guys didn't have to do this," Harry said as he looked over at his toys that lined the small shelf that his cupboard had. Harry's smile only widened as he ripped the paper off, revealing the book he had wrapped for himself a week ago. "It's just what I wanted," he gasped as he held the book up. "Thank you so much!" Harry cried as he flipped the book open and started to read, making sure he had his light out before his aunt and uncle got home.
