Title: Care to Dance?
The walls of the Great Hall were covered in sparkling, silver frost, with hundreds of garlands of mistletoe and ivy crossing over the starry black ceiling. The house tables had been replaced with dozens of smaller, lantern-lit ones, each sitting about ten people. The area gave off an enchanting blue hue that caused Christina Rivers, a young Hufflepuff with bright purple hair and sparkling blue eyes to stare in awe. The Great Hall was full of students and Professors belonging to houses Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Gryffindor and, of course, Ravenclaw. The Ravenclaw students danced romantically on the ballroom floor with their partners, and despite house Gryffindor being known for their bravery, none of them were dancing, instead staying close to the wall or sitting at one of the tables. The Slytherins were stuffing their faces at the buffet which caused Christina's face to twist in disgust. Lastly was her house, the Hufflepuffs. It was no surprise that none of the students from Hufflepuff were out dancing. They were known for being the quiet house for a reason. The majority of them liked to sit by the window during a rainy day with a good book, and being forced to attend anything that involved interacting with people wasn't considered to be a good time for any Hufflepuff.
Christina stood at the entrance of the Great Hall, hoping to make a quick getaway. It was already past midnight and all she wanted was to put on a pair of sweats and enjoy the rest of her night in peaceful quietness. She was just about to go for it when her eyes caught sight of a Slytherin boy who stood a couple of steps away from her, not indulging in his house mates' gluttonous behavior. Christina had to admit, the boy was kind of cute with his long, jet black hair that reached down to his shoulders and his pale expression that only made his eyes pop out more.
Christina didn't know what came over her and before she could stop herself, two words left her mouth, leaving her absolutely horrified. "Second thoughts?" Christina didn't know why she said it but now it was out there and there was no taking it back.
The boy looked over and Christina could feel her heart stop beating. He spoke in a low, menacing voice. "What?"
The air seemed to leave Christina's lungs as she unconsciously took a step back. Anything that she could have replied with disappeared from her mind as his obsidian coloured eyes never left hers. Christna quickly considered walking away to go back to her dorms with at least some of her dignity still intact. She tried to talk herself out of the insane boost of courage she was feeling but as usual her mouth was moving before her brain had a chance to stop her. She held out her hand towards him. "Do you care to dance?"
This night could end in a disaster for Christina. This boy could walk away right now, and she would be the talk of the school for the rest of the year. The girl who asked a boy to dance and got turned down. She would be humiliated. But to her surprise, the boy didn't walk away or make some kind of snide remark. He took her hand and led her out on the dance floor.
Christina could feel a shiver go down her spin as she felt his thumb graze over her knuckles as they positioned to dance. Christina looked down as the boy took his other hand and placed it on her waist. Hesitantly, she placed her hand on his shoulder and slowly they began to waltz.
Christina did her best to follow the boy's lead, occasionally looking down to see her foot work. She did her best to ignore the prying eyes of their peers, just wanting to enjoy this moment, but when the boy suddenly stiffened, Christina knew something was off. She looked up to see his eyes focused on something in the distance. She followed his line of sight and soon saw what he was looking at. He was staring at another couple that was dancing not far from them: Lily Evans and James Potter, one of the number one couples at Hogwarts. This time, Christina stiffened as she realized just who she was dancing with. "Severus Snape."
Christina could feel Severus flinch at the mention of his name, holding her breath as he looked down at her. "Now that you know who you are dancing with, will you flee like all the others?" he asked, patiently waiting for an answer, his eyes even darker then before. Christina, who was still feeling the rush of insane courage gave a simple answer. "No."
Not about to break free from the boy that everyone feared, she kept a tight hold as he placed both of his hands on her waist, lifting her up and spinning her around with all the other girls on the dance floor.
