Chapter 4: The Light
Ever since I've been here in this mansion, I've felt different things overtime. Confusion. Obedience. Fear. Kindness. Dread. All circling the thoughts of the elder Mikaelson brother. I was confused when he "disappeared" and felt lost for a while until Rebekah came back. I felt dread and fear once I found out what Klaus did to him and then again when I found out that Elijah Mikaelson is my soulmate. An immortal being. A man that has known how to court women since probably his human days. I felt kindness with him for a moment before he was dragged away and then kindness again with Hayley.
I guess in a way it's Stockholm syndrome, but in a weird way. I felt like Hayley and I have become friends as we're usually the only ones home and we're apparently both stuck here until Elijah comes back and Klaus takes over the French Quarter from his adoptive son back in the day. Which is how I know and I'm probably the only one that knows about Hayley having a small crush on her baby daddy to say.
She doesn't like to talk about it a lot, but I've noticed the signs. When he's in the room and they banter, it's like they both are playing a game of cat and dogs. Who will fall and who will win the chase? It's quite entertaining to see and know that Klaus feels the same, but it's sad to know he's deciding not to act on those feelings.
Currently, I was sitting on the couch with Hayley, who was flipping through a book while she talks to Agnes. Over at the coffee table, Rebekah sits and types on a laptop, looking for shutters to find Elijah. "I told you Agnes, I feel great!" Hayley says, smiling as I flip to the next page in my book. It's a romantic erotic book that Hayley recommended to me and I really like it, but I skip over the erotic stuff a lot as I didn't feel I was quite ready for that. Especially when everyone is nearby.
Agnes sighs as she says, "You are overdue for a checkup."
"What am I gonna do? Pop into the Quarter for a quick ultrasound? A pregnant werewolf escorted by a witch? Nothing to see here!" Hayley replies with a some snark as I giggle, before I decide to stop reading. I put in the bookmark and look up at Rebekah, who rolled her eyes.
"A lot of women would kill to have a child. It strikes me as odd that you're not taking better care of yours," Rebekah says, voice tight with jealousy and I sigh, feeling bad as Hayley does the same.
Agnes gives Hayley a small smile and says, "I know a doctor out in the Bayou, off the beaten path. Now, I took the liberty of making an appointment for you. Tonight, after-hours, just us. Vampires will never get word of it."
Hayley thinks for a moment and rolls her eyes in reluctant agreement. "Okay, fine. Bayou-baby-doctor it is."
"I'll go with you, so you're not alone," I offer up, resting a hand on her shoulder and Hayley smiles, nodding her head before she decides to leave the room with Agnes. Klaus walks in soon after and laughs at Rebekah when he sees her. I ignore him as he glances at me for a moment and I go back to my reading.
"Please, sister, tell me you're not still at it with the internet search. How does one begin, anyway? Just type in "anonymous attic?"" He teases, making me annoyed as I try to get back into the book.
"Someone has to find Elijah, even if I have to search every bloody attic in New Orleans," Rebekah retorts and I let out a small smile before blushing as a erotic scene comes up in the book and I skip over about ten pages or so.
"Like looking for a needle in a rather large pile of needles."
"I remember details about the attic Marcel took me to. There were shutters on the windows behind Elijah's coffin," She says and I look up in thought for a moment, still blushing and I ignore Klaus' teasing smirk at me.
"Well, that should narrow it down immensely. Myself, I prefer actual strategy as opposed to mind-numbing labor. Marcel's delay in returning our brother makes me suspect he's no longer in charge of the situation. If Davina's loyalty to Marcel is strained, perhaps the young witch will be open to discussing a new alliance," He explains, making me roll my eyes at him, annoyed beyond measure.
Rebekah smiles tightly at him, annoyed as she says, "As usual, your power grabs are more important than rescuing your brother."
Klaus just shrugs as he says, "I prefer to think of it as killing two birds with one stone. Rob Marcel of his secret weapon, bring our brother home."
What a good brother he is...
It's dark when Agnes drives Hayley and I up to the obstetrician in the Bayou in her car. I look around to see a rookery clinic in the middle of the woods, making me feel nervous. Hayley looks around as she asks, "This is the doctor's office?" Making me wonder the same question.
Agnes just gives her a reassuring smile as she says, "Dr. Paige is only this far out because Marcel's men kept terrorizing her patients. Go! She won't bite!" I felt nervous as I get out of the car, Hayley following me and we walk towards the clinic.
After a few tests, Dr. Paige is giving Hayley an ultrasound, and I smile as I can hear the fetal heartbeat. I was in the room with her, holding my friend's hand as I sit near her. The doctor smiles at us before saying, "Your baby's heart rate is perfect."
"I knew it. She's a tough one, like her mom," Hayley says and I chuckle at her as I let go when Dr. Paige chuckles and hands her a tissue to wipe the ultrasound gel off of her abdomen, which she does. As Hayley sits up, Dr. Paige notices Hayley's crescent-moon shaped birthmark on her shoulder, and she smiles tightly. I look over as I adjust Hayley's sweater over her birthmark.
"That's a unique birthmark," She says, but we just ignore the comment.
"We're pretty much done here, right?" Hayley asks before her phone beeps at her. The same goes for me and my eyebrows furrow as I look down at my phone to see a group chat from Rebekah, asking us where we are. I look over to see Hayley text her back where we are.
"Your blood pressure is a bit high, I've got something for it," Dr. Paige says and we nod our head. I watch as as she walks away, to where Agnes is waiting in the next room. Suddenly, a wolf howls loudly, startling Hayley and I. We both get up to look out the window and we see a car's headlights approaching, which makes me suspicious and anxious. Dr. Paige returns with her medication and I walk casually over towards the door, ready to lock us in.
Hayley sighs, feeling anxious like me as she says, "Ahh, you know, I'm-I'm actually not that good with pills."
"Heh, neither am I, truth be told," Dr. Paige says and sets the medicine cup on the table and starts preparing something. A group of intimidating-looking men walk into the clinic and whisper something to Agnes. Hayley turns around to see Dr. Paige preparing a syringe, and the doctor lunges at Hayley to inject her with it. Hayley grabs her arm and pushes it away from her, headbutts the doctor to disorient her, and then stabs the syringe into the doctor's neck, causing her to pass out onto the floor. When the men in the lobby see what happened, they run toward the door, but I quickly turn around to shut and lock it before they can enter. One of the men rattles the doorknob as I run towards the window and Hayley uses her wolf strength to push it open. I shove her out of the window and she lands on her feet, making a break for it as I jump out the window, landing on my ass. Quickly, I make a run for it and follow behind Hayley.
After running for a while, we decide to fight back as I grab a trunk off a tree. Hayley and I hide behind trees as the men chase after us. They run past us, making me hold my breath before I run out with Hayley. She runs up to on and kicks the first man she encounters in the gut before knocking him to the ground. I tackle one to the ground, his head hitting the ground before I swung the trunk at him a few times to knock him the fuck out.
Hayley then jumps and kicks the second man down as well as she snaps his neck. A third man tries to attack her, but she grabs a knife from his hands as I kick his back, making him fall into the knife. When another man lunges toward Hayley, she grabs his shotgun and knocks him to the ground, and kills him as she kicks him and beats him in the head with the butt of the gun. As Hayley crouches into a defensive position on the ground, her eyes flash gold as she looks around for any more threats. I look around before gasping as I didn't see a large man and he puts me in a headlock. Hayley growls at him, ready to pounce before suddenly he falls to the ground, neck snapped. I turn around to see that it was Rebekah and I sigh in relief.
Rebekah smiles at us as she says, "Have to say, I'm impressed."
"How did you find us?" Hayley asks, curious as we both are leaned over, panting.
Rebekah shrugs her shoulders as I stand and says, "Your text got me halfway, vamping here did the rest. Who are they?"
"Witches. Warlocks. Whatever," I respond, looking around to see more men with flashlights in the distance, running towards us.
Rebekah's eyes widen as she looks at us and says, "There're more of them. Run!"
Hayley reluctantly heeds her warning as we both make a break for it, turning around and start running again before we hear a gasp behind us. I kept running until I notice and hear Hayley yell out, "Rebekah!" I stop, turning around to see Rebekah down and with an arrow in her heart. My eyes widen in horror when I see Hayley is shot in the shoulder with an arrow, which seems to be coated in something that causes her to pass out and fall to the ground as well. I quickly run over to Hayley, yanking out the arrow and putting pressure on her shoulder. I look up as I see the men nearing and so I decided to drag Hayley behind a log to hide her from view. I stand up, ready to call Klaus, when an arrow soars through the air, but I dodge it.
"What?" I asked, confused by myself before more men come into view and one of them looks at the log Hayley is hiding in. He looks at me with a glare as he flicks his wrist, his knife coming out. My eyes narrow as I felt anger, pure raw anger at these people. These men, which seem hellbent on killing Hayley and her baby and all of us. I didn't come here to die. Not today.
Put out your hand.
I didn't know what to do as I jump at the voice suddenly in my head. Feeling afraid and angry, I put out both palms of my hands to face the men. They're eyes widen before they make a run at me, but suddenly...
Light came pouring out of the palms of my hands. My eyes widen in amazement as the men scream in pain as they were tossed back by the light and as they were engulfed in it. The light kept pouring out as they screamed, before I stopped by closing my hands and the light was gone. I let out a shock gasp, hand covering my mouth in fear as I saw that the men were... dead. Burnt alive by the looks of it with half their faces melted off or their ribs showing through. It smelt horrible and all I heard before I passed out was a howl nearby.
"Rose! Rose!"
I gasp, sitting up in shock and fear as I look around, whimpering. But I pause as I saw that it was Hayley who woke me up. My eyebrows furrow as I notice we're not surrounded by trees like before, but near a river stream. "Where are we?" I ask, before she sighs in relief as she gets up and shakes her head.
"I don't know... Let's head back. I think the wolves saved us," Hayley says and I nod my head as I stand up. I didn't know if what happened... really happened. That the light pouring out of my hands was real. That those men died by my hands by being on fire or something. So I decided to keep this to myself as I look around the woods surrounding us as we get closer to the bayou clinic, hopefully Rebekah and Klaus are there...
I pause as I noticed Hayley struggling and put her arm around me as I kept walking while carrying some of her weight so she doesn't pass out on me or her daughter. "Hayley! What happened? Tell me what happened," Klaus yelled, panic feeling him as we finally saw him and Rebekah on the steps of the clinic.
Hayley, feeling exhausted, says, "I can't remember." Klaus anxiously examines her for any wounds, holding her shoulder and he observes her as Rebekah walks over to us.
"You've completely healed. There's not a scratch on you."
Hayley rolls her eyes as she says, "One of the perks of being a werewolf, remember?"
Klaus just shakes his head and says, "No, not that fast." Rebekah wraps an arm around Hayley protectively and off me as I pant and sit on the steps.
"Leave her alone!" Rebekah says before shaking her head at her brother.
I think for a moment as I connect the dots and says, exhausted, "It's the baby. The vampire blood- Klaus' vampire blood- in her system. It can heal any wound."
Klaus turns and stares at me incredulously, his eyebrows furrowed for a moment as Rebekah finishes off by saying, "Your own child healed you."
Klaus smiles at Hayley as she looks at him with wide eyes. Then, Rebekah looks between Hayley and I. "How did you two escape? You both were outnumbered, unarmed? Those men were burnt to a crisp and ripped apart."
Hayley furrows her eyebrows as she said, "I thought it was the wolf. I know- or think -it's trying to protect me. But you said, burnt?" My eyes widen as everything comes to a halt as I look down at my hands, my heart pounding in my chest. So it was true. I really killed those men by burning them alive? But, how? I'm normal. I have been since I was a baby I thought. I've never gotten into many fights, but still. This light has never appeared before in my life and neither has that voice before.
"Rose?" Rebekah says, breaking me from my mind. I realize that she was kneeling in front of me with furrowed eyebrows and I was panting, like I couldn't breathe. "Breathe, Rose." She went to take my hands but I pushed her hands away- the light flashing out of my hands as suddenly Rebekah was tossed ten feet away from me.
"Rebekah!" I yell, afraid she was burning but I saw no smoke as she stood up, brushing herself off as Hayley looked at me with wide eyes. Klaus narrowed his eyes as he stood near Hayley. I ignore them as I ran over to the blonde and examine her for anything burning as tears stream down my cheeks. "Rebekah, are you-you alright?" I ask with a shaky voice before sniffing as she nods her head.
"What the bloody hell was that?" Klaus says and I look at Rebekah with fear in my eyes.
"I... don't know..."
