He stood inside the buzzing school. His heart raced as he glanced around. He hoped no one noticed his nervousness. The anxious boy took a deep breath and squared his shoulders, preparing himself for what he was about to do. It was now or never he had already decided. With one final prep talk to himself, the student with oddly colored hair stepped forward and knocked on the open locker door.
"Hey Lucy."
His voice was barely audible over the clinking of metal.
"I...was wondering if you'd like to go to prom with me?"
Natsu winced, feeling his cheeks heat up as soon as the words were out. What if she said no? Horrible images of rejection flashed through his mind. What if she chose to go with somebody like Gray or Leo? Before he could dwell on the possible worst-case scenario, brown eyes met his. She looked at him cautiously for a moment. Her lips were pursed in confusion. She stood silent testing to see if this was another one of his pranks. His face remained even as he held his breath. A slow smile spread across her face.
"Really?"
She asked in surprise.
"You want me to go with you?"
Pink lips curved into a true smile as she observed him with red cheeks. Natsu nodded slowly. A feeling of relief suddenly lifted off his chest. The hard part was over. Now he just needed an answer. Natsu returned the smile as he saw her shift in place. He couldn't believe it. She was actually considering it!
"Of course!"
He coughed into his hand after his voice pitched. Lucy's eyes twinkled like a little star.
"I mean…wouldn't want you to miss out on such an awesome event."
Natsu added in a hurry. He was beginning to feel a little self-conscious about the whole thing. Magnolia High's class clown knew he probably didn't have a chance with her, with her being so popular and all, but he had to at least try. He'd be kicking himself all the way back home to Zeref if he didn't. The pink haired boy bit the inside of his gum, trying to not think about the fact that other friends of his likely already asked her first. For all he knew she could be taken. Lucy's smile grew wider.
"I'd like that."
Her voice barely carried over the other students in the hallway. Natsu's heart soared. He grinned back at her, feeling a warmth spread through his chest.
"Seriously? Because I'd like that too."
Her head nodded with honesty. He slowly backed away from her locker, laughing as a group of her friends came rushing over. He knew they were preparing to bombard his now prom-date with questions.
"So…see you tomorrow?"
Her locker door closed quietly as the jovial blonde held her books close against her chest.
"How about we meet after seventh period? You can walk me home."
Lucy's cheeks reddened. Natsu couldn't help but notice how cute she looked when she was embarrassed. He agreed, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Sure. I don't have anything better to do."
She giggled out loud at that.
"Homework exists. Did you forget Natsu?"
One look at the brilliant girl was all that was needed for her to get the message. He still spoke anyway.
"Like I'm doing that."
