Chapter 4: Sins of the Forsaken (Daily Life #2)
Warning: This fic contains intense violence, lots of cursing, character death, gore and blood, sexual innuendos (thanks Maggi- Wait. You're dead now. Meaning there are no sexual innuendos!... Maybe! Hooray!), and possible spoilers for the Danganronpa series, most notably the first one. But hey, everyone lurking in this fandom has at least played the first Danganronpa so no need to worry much there!
With that said, please enjoy!
'Please meet me in the Art Room at 5:00 PM.'
- Griffin Dorter
Isadora de la Vega tucked the note neatly in her school uniform.
It was important to note that Isadora wasn't wearing that usual witch's outfit she usually wore like the entirety of this story. This time around, she was wearing your typical school uniform. This normal school outfit consisted of a white polo shirt with a black, long-sleeved vest. A yellow tie is hidden between her vest and her polo shirt. And finally, she also wore traditional uniform black shoes.
It was bizarre to see her out of that silly get-up, but today was special. Not as special as to wear formal clothing but a special day to showcase who Isadora de la Vega really was! A day to show that she wasn't just a witch but a really good person to hang out with! She wasn't just The Fantastic Isadora de la Vega! She was also just Isadora de la Vega! Ultimate Fairytale Writer!
And who better to show this to than her old classmate and neighbor Griffin Dorter?!
Griffin Dorter was a rather calm individual who usually hung around the background and didn't care what other people were doing as long as it wasn't too much trouble toward him. He minded his own business. He respected what other people did. Generally, he was a really nice guy. Though he and her never talked much back at their old high school despite being neighbors and everything, now that they were both at The Hope's Peak Academy of America this was her chance to get to know the young boy who she really wanted to be friends with!
Fate called to her one early morning when she found a note stuffed in her locker by Griffin Dorter! He must've been thinking the same thing!
He must've wanted to be friends too!
That was what Isadora had thought!
…
Except reality differed greatly from the imaginations of a young girl stuck in a world of fairytales.
…
"Ack!"
Isadora felt a bucket of water fall onto her head. She was completely drenched from head to toe. The amount of work she put into her appearance was instantly wasted by nothing but wasteful water from the facility's toilet. She shivered over the cold. Her mind tried to comprehend what just happened. Maybe one of the students tried to prank someone and she accidentally got caught up in it?
Yeah! That had to be it!
Except… it wasn't. Because giggling started to erupt as students stepped out from behind every corner of the room. Students. Her classmates. Which also included…
Griffin.
Isadora widened her eyes.
"I-It's… really cold," Isadora hugged herself. "Can I get a little help here–"
"See?" Griffin glanced away. "I told you she would come. Right on the clock too…"
Whether there was shame or a look of indifference, Isadora couldn't tell. What she could tell instead was that he wasn't that nice guy she thought he was. He was in on it. He was the one who prepared this for her.
"W-What?" Isadora blinked.
"Eww gross," one of her classmates covered their nose. "She even smells like a witch!"
"Aww man, I really thought she would melt!" another one of her classmates laughed.
"What are you going to do now?" a third taunted her. "Chant some magic spell to make us float?"
"Hahaha!" a fourth couldn't stop laughing. "Look at her face! She's so confused!"
"W-Wait, wh-what's going on," Isadora blinked. "G-Griffin. I… I don't understand. W-What's so funny?"
Isadora couldn't comprehend it. She was their classmate, right? So, why were they laughing at her? Why were they taunting her? What was so wrong with her? She was just like them, right? She wasn't someone lesser! She was the Ultimate Fairytale Writer! She… She was an Ultimate. Just like them… Wasn't she?
"G-Griffin, wh-what's going on?" Isadora turned to Griffin. "I… D-Did you plan this?"
Isadora didn't even dare to move. Even the slightest movement and the cold, disgusting water would slosh around in her clothes. It was such an uncomfortable feeling.
Griffin remained silent for a moment before relenting with a sigh.
"Yeah, I did," Griffin rubbed the back of his neck.
"B-But, why?" Isadora's eyes slightly teared up. Her heart sank. "Th-This isn't funny. It's… It's so mean. I… I thought we were friends…"
Suddenly, she saw Griffin's face turn grim. His face twitched. He wasn't acting indifferent anymore. He was actually irritated.
"That's the problem," Griffin stepped forward. "You thought we were friends. But we were never friends. We were just classmates from an old high school. You were just some girl who lived next door. And you were still that annoying freak everyone made fun of behind your back..."
"Ohhhhh, preach!" an unhelpful student yelled in the background.
The more Isadora let his words process, the more she felt the urge to cry. He didn't really mean that, did he? Did he?
She watched him rub his forehead, annoyed.
"Why did you have to follow me to this goddamn school..." Griffin gritted his teeth, now angry. "I came here because my future was going to be set as soon as I graduate. Not so I can be stalked by a freak like you!"
"S-Stalk–?" Isadora blinked. "N-No. I wasn't stalking… I… I… was…"
"Oh really?" Griffin deadpanned. "You weren't stalking? Really? Then, how the fuck did you end up in the same school as me?! How the fuck did you end up in the same classroom as me? How the fuck did you become an Ultimate like me?!"
"I– I– I– was… I just…" Isadora blinked back tears.
"Oh yeah, that's the look of some creepy girl trying to get with good ol Griffin," one of the female students stated.
"Oooh, you really going to do your admirer like that, Griffin?" another female student stated.
"Come on guys," a student spoke up. "Stop messing with Griffin like that. You heard him. This bitch is a stalker. Can't believe she did everything she could to be with him like that… Freak."
"Freak."
"Ewww. Freak."
"Loser."
"Disgusting schmuck."
Words flew into her head. As a writer, she knew so many words, but to hear such vile words used against her… it was…
It was…
It was too much.
Isadora sprinted out of the Art Room, leaving behind her laughing classmates and ignoring just how uncomfortable all that water was soaked into her clothing-wear like that. More water droplets flowed right out of her eyes.
Ah.
Those were her tears, flying so fast away that she barely had any time to wipe away any of them with her arm.
She thought Griffin was a nice guy.
She really thought things would go differently.
She thought she would finally make a friend…
…
She never thought she would be betrayed so cruelly, though.
Abigail opened her eyes in cold sweat.
Yet another nightmare.
With every passing incident, the nightmares keep getting worse and worse. Just how much longer could she take this? She hugged her knees as she frowned bitterly. She tried to bury herself in her blanket, but nothing was working. Nothing was going to get her back to sleep. She checked the time.
2:00 AM.
This was torture.
Her heart was pounding too hard and too fast to go to sleep.
She didn't want to see that again.
She didn't want to see her like that again.
That's when she realized it.
She was crying.
Her eyes were blurred with tears streaming down her eyes. She let those tear drops fall onto her blanket as she hugged herself in fear. She couldn't sleep. She wouldn't dare to sleep. Tonight, was going to be yet another sleepless night.
"...Ashlen…" Abigail slowly covered her mouth.
Just how many sleepless nights could she handle after...?
(Cafeteria)
By the time morning came around, the Cafeteria was filled with seven people, which granted, wasn't a lot given the number they had originally started out in. These people included:
Arthur, Haruto, Holland, Ina, Jared, Mimi, and Zuri.
"Huh, it seems like Abigail and Cassandra aren't here today," Zuri noted. "Not that I'm surprised with Cassandra, but Abigail? She usually comes to these Meetings a lot nowadays, right? I wonder why she's late today."
"Abigail's been looking a lot more tired than usual," Mimi frowned, looking down. "I think the game is starting to mess with her head, a bit."
"Starting to?" Haruto raised an eyebrow. "We've been stuck in this game for who knows how long? That and we've all lost seven people to this twisted game. I think whatever is going on, is something else entirely."
"Regardless, the Killing Game would be adding to her stress," Ina pointed out. "It is clear that we need to start being careful around her."
"Whoa whoa whoa," Haruto jumped in. "What does that mean? Quit acting like she's some nut job alright? She's just really fucking tired of everything. She's not the type to go and snap, y'know."
"We've assumed that for countless people who wouldn't be the type to go and snap," Arthur interjected.
Holland avoided eye contact.
Jared lowered his hat down.
"Hey asshole," Haruto looked slightly irritated. "Your sister counts too, y'know."
"Half," Ina corrected before sighing. "But both of you have made your points. I am guilty of being driven to my limit but you cannot also doubt that if there is even a slight possibility that Abigail may turn on us, we will have to take extra precautions."
Haruto couldn't believe what he was hearing. They had just started the day and Abigail's absence was already getting everyone to start treating her like she could be the next attempted murderer in their house of attempted murderers. He clenched his fist. What did they know what she was going through? This was such bullshit!
"Well, now that we got that topic out of the way," Jared stepped forward. "What is the general plan for today? I know Haruto and Abigail are supposed to show me the Security Office."
"I'll see if she's still up for it," Haruto grumbled. "If not, then it might just be me instead."
"Don't forget, Holland and I are going too," Zuri pumped her fists up determinedly. "Just so more than one of us have access to this security gig!"
"But of course, I'll be taking on most of the job, so…" Jared pointed out.
"No no, the workload should be balanced!" Zuri pouted.
"Not to someone as unqualified as you, I don't think so," Jared shook his head.
"Hey, if there's anything I know, it's that I try my absolute hardest to get the job done right," Zuri boasted. "So, you need to stop underestimating my potential and let me have a go at this!"
"Fucking children, the lot of them," Haruto facepalmed.
"...And that's why I'm here, I guess," Holland shrugged, stoically.
"Okay, so if you guys are going to be on the Security Cameras all day, I… want to be alone and check out the Ultimate Supermodel's Cell," Mimi stated before glancing down and rubbing her arms. "I… want to pay my respects to... her, if that's fine with you guys."
"You would go alone?" Ina questioned the witch girl. "Are you sure? Perhaps you might need some company. Might I suggest myse–"
"No," Mimi bluntly rejected that notion as she folded her arms.
Ina did a double-take. That was a rejection if she's ever heard one. Truthfully, she was hoping she'd get to speak and hopefully make amends with Mimi. After all, she did get her best friend killed. The least she could do was perhaps come to some sort of positive agreement between the two. She needed that in her conscience…
So, she tried again.
"A-Are you sure?" Ina lost her composure slightly. "I mean, I would love to–"
"Look Ina," Mimi sighed. "If I wanted company, you would be the second-to-last person I would choose."
"Er, I suppose second-to-last is not that bad of a placement…" Ina looked slightly disappointed.
"Last place is Cassandra," Mimi retorted. "The bar isn't really that high."
"Grk!" Ina felt a wind blow against her jacket, which was strange because this sort of thing usually happened during Trials, not Daily Lives. Mimi's power was so exceptional that her words were literally breaking reality.
As expected of someone who studies the dark arts.
But in the case of Ina, she was relatively disappointed in how ruthless she had just been rejected by Mimi. The worst thing she can say is 'No?' Yeah right. That was enough to make a man drown himself in motor oil. Good thing Ina's a woman!
An arm courteously wrapped themselves around Ina's shoulder. Who else would it be but her demon half-brother Arthur Kingston, who seemed less than pleased to see his own sister being treated that way.
"Oh, pish posh, who needs Mimi when you have a brother like me?" Arthur boasted. "I'd say today might be the perfect day to catch up on lost times. Do you agree?"
"I wholeheartedly disagree," Ina rejected. "I had enough half-sibling bonding time yesterday."
"And there is more where that came from," Arthur smirked. "I'll even let you choose where we go today."
Ina folded her arms in thought. Was he serious? She was sure that he was going to default to the Ultimate Snowboarder's Cell. But if he was giving her a choice then…
"The Ultimate Supermodel's Cell," Ina smirked.
"I'm sorry, but you can't choose that Cell," Arthur stated.
"Y-You just said I could choose where we go today," Ina narrowed her eyes.
"I did, but Mimi took that Cell, and she wishes to be alone today," Arthur tapped his head with a smirk. "Try again."
"...Anywhere but the Ultimate Snowboarder's Cell," Ina grumbled, folding her arms together.
"Good ch– Wait," Arthur widened his eyes. "Er… Hmm… I'm not sure if I can agree to your terms and conditions."
"Then say goodbye to half-sibling bonding time," Ina folded her arms.
"Fine, fine," Arthur sighed, slightly disappointed. "No Ultimate Snowboarder's Cell then…"
…
Once the siblings finally settled down with what room they were to bond in, the Morning Meeting came to a short close with Zuri making the closing announcement this time. Jared didn't seem too happy with her taking that spotlight but he bit his tongue and said nothing. After all, there were more important matters to do today, and that was the Security Office.
"Let's get going guys," Zuri nodded. "And if you guys find something, let us know back at the Cafeteria, alright?"
"Of course!" Mimi nodded her head before heading off. "I'll be at Big Sis Maggie's Cell until then!"
"And we'll be at the Ultimate Sailor's Cell," Arthur nodded toward Zuri as held Ina in a tight hug. Clearly, Ina was not amused by this.
"You guys stay here in the Cafeteria for a bit, aight?" Haruto told Zuri, Holland, and Jared. "I gotta go get Abigail and see if she's still up to heading to the Security Office together."
"...Sounds good," Holland nodded. "I'll also make sure these two don't end up fighting each other as well…"
"Great!" Haruto placed his hands on his hips. "Because if they do, I'm punching you. Got it?"
"...On second thought maybe…" Holland didn't like that threat.
"Catch ya in a jiffy," Haruto stated before leaving Holland with the two leadership rivals.
The game designer could only sigh.
"Yo Abs," Haruto knocked on Abigail's door. "You in there? Open up!"
There seemed to be a lack of response. It was concerning. He heard nothing. No one had seen Abigail. And he remembered just how awful she looked the day before. He clenched his fist. Please be okay… At first, Haruto thought about breaking down the door, but he wasn't desperate.
Not yet at least.
He tried again. He knocked once. Then twice. Then three times. And then he started to pound on the door. Once. Twice. Three times.
"Come on, quit playing with me Abs!" Haruto exclaimed. "I just wanted to check up on you, alright?!"
…
The door slowly opened.
Haruto breathed out a sigh of relief.
She was okay.
…
Except, not really.
"A-Abs?" Haruto blinked.
Abigail looked like a mess. She avoided eye contact. It was clear to him that her sleeping habits have gotten worse. They always do seem to get worse and worse. Her face was pale. Eyes slightly drooping. Eyes… They were red?
"...H-Have you been crying?" Haruto blinked, surprised.
Whatever punk-colored eyeliner she used for her eyes was now runny and stained. But it was clear that whatever was going on, Abigail wasn't going to tell him anything. She wiped her eyes and yawned.
"N-No, of course not," Abigail lied.
"Don't lie to me," Haruto looked down. "Look if something's wrong, just tell me, alright? You're seriously freaking me out here."
Abigail rubbed her arms before shaking her head.
"Look, I'm fine, okay?" Abigail stated, walking past Haruto. "Let's just go to the Morning Meeting."
"...The Morning Meeting already ended," Haruto told her.
"...Oh," Abigail paused before frowning slightly. "Then I guess it's the Security Office today. That's what we said we were going to do, right?"
She turned toward Haruto, perking her head slightly.
"Hey, you coming or what?" Abigail asked.
"...A-Are you sure, you're okay?" Haruto asked in return. "I mean, you look…"
"Look, don't make me repeat myself," Abigail folded her arms, grimly. "I'm fine. So stop being such an idiot and let's go."
Without much of a word, Abigail left to go straight toward the Security Office, leaving Haruto behind. He wasn't sure what to say. He tightly kept his fist clenched but it wasn't out of anger or anything. It was… sadness.
He watched Abigail leave and to himself, his mind started to voice out the concerns and questions that were running amuck.
Quit saying you're fine.
Why can't you just be honest and tell me what the fuck is really going on Abs?
Why the fuck do you always have to keep things so secretive?
Why?
Why does it hurt me so much to see you keep hurting yourself like this?
(Ultimate Sailor's Cell)
The moment Ina stepped inside the Ultimate Sailor's Cell was the moment she felt her leg slowly fail to keep her up.
Just being in the room that was so memorable of Yuumi's scent and sights… It was surprisingly much more overwhelming than Ina had originally thought. There was the sailcloth that was used in the previous Trial by Carter, returned to its usual state probably by Monohebi. Needless to say, she didn't have fond memories of the guy who tried to frame her as a scapegoat. Not like she didn't deserve it.
There was Brucey. Ina recalled that was the name Mimi said but she didn't know it was for an actual live shark. Now, how did Ina know the shark was named Brucey? Simple. There was a childishly drawn paper sign taped onto the aquarium window stating "DO NOT TAP THE GLASS. YOU WILL UPSET BRUCEY".
Cute.
There the speargun was returned to its proper place instead of the Evidence Room. It was still coated in Barracuda's and Carter's blood however. And finally, a bunch of maps of different parts of the ocean that Yuumi would've loved to explore if she was still alive and somehow managed to escape.
There it was.
That was the thought that got her to drop onto her knees. She grimaced slightly as Arthur rushed to her side.
"Ina, are you alright?" Arthur blinked. "Perhaps you should've chosen a different Cell rather than a Cell that belonged to a girl you indirectly killed."
"No, a girl we directly killed," Ina corrected, as she glumly stared at the wall of maps.
"Pardon?" Arthur blinked.
"...If I had not wanted to try to kill you over my stupid emotions, Mayu and Yuumi would still be alive," Ina frowned. "And Mimi… she would not hate me as much as she does now. At the same time, you were in the wrong for sending that note to Yuumi."
Arthur said nothing.
"We killed her," Ina glanced at her hands, as if she was imagining them to be stained with both Yuumi's and Mayu's blood. "And I will stop at nothing to atone for what I did."
"No," Arthur shook his head. "You don't have to atone for anything. If anything, I think you've punished yourself enough by being locked up in that Cell. If Mimi can't bring herself to forgive you, then that's on her, not you."
Ina stared at Arthur.
That didn't feel right at all. She didn't agree with Arthur's notion the slightest. Perhaps it was her mentality desperately wanting some sort of closure to her guilt, or perhaps it was because that level of thinking was a "demon's level of thinking".
"Can I ask you something, half-brother?" Ina asked.
"Of course," Arthur nodded.
"...Have you even atoned for your part in Yuumi's demise?" Ina asked.
"...I'd say that I have," Arthur folded his arms. "Nearly losing you, my sister, was punishing enough. I've even made a promise to do everything I can to make sure you escape and bring hell to my family name."
Ina was silent for a moment.
That answer…
She looked down slightly. It was clear she wasn't satisfied with that response. Not as much as she thought she would be. Arthur glanced down toward her before wrapping his arms around her.
"Hey, hey, Ina," Arthur began as he hugged her. "I think you're letting your guilt take over every piece of your state of mind. What happened, happened. Mayu killed Yuumi and she was executed. You can't atone for something that was entirely out of your control–"
"Mayu Mashiro was my friend," Ina said, somewhat regretfully. "Yuumi Kizuchi was Mimi's friend. These two people died because of something we did together. How was that entirely out of my control?"
Ina paused before she added something to her last phrase.
"Out of our control..." Ina frowned.
Arthur said nothing. Ina remained in her saddened stance for a moment. Then she looked up at her half-brother with a curious yet slightly disappointed expression on her face.
"Half-brother?" she asked.
"Yes?" Arthur raised an eyebrow.
"How does none of this trouble you?" she had to ask.
"What do you mean?" Arthur folded his arms together.
"You sent Yuumi to her death," Ina reminded him. "How do you not feel guilt over something like that?"
Arthur stared at Ina blankly before crossing his arms. She wouldn't like it if he ended up saying he got more distracted over trying to make amends with her rather than making amends with Mimi after being part of the reason why she had died. In fact, she probably wouldn't like what he was going to say in general, but his little sister deserves some sort of answer... right?
"You want the truth?" Arthur asked.
"...Of course," Ina nodded.
"Because it does me no well to get hung up over past mistakes," Arthur folded his arms. "I made my choice. Someone died for it. There isn't really anything I can do to make up for anything. And it isn't like I will ever be forgiven for what I've done. And frankly Ina, I doubt the person you wish to please will ever forgive for what you did either."
"...But everyone else has," Ina frowned.
"Yes, but they weren't as close to Yuumi in comparison to Mimi," Arthur told her.
Ina was unsure by what Arthur was saying. She still owed it to herself to make amends with Mimi. To try to make up for what she did, right? Right?
"You have nothing to prove to her," Arthur assured Ina. "You have already apologized. You have already promised that this wouldn't happen again. If she can't bring herself to forgive you, then it's on her, not you."
Ina said nothing in regard to that.
She wanted to voice some disagreement about that, but at the same time, what Arthur was saying felt like a way of assurance to her overwhelming guilt. It felt like it was desperately something she wanted. Closure for that guilt.
"Besides, I have long forgiven for what you tried to do to me," Arthur assured her. "So why can't Mimi? Am I right?"
Ina had to ponder this thought.
"...Then why do I still feel so guilty?" Ina looked down.
"Hmph, it's only natural," Arthur placed a hand on her shoulder. "After all, as far as I'm concerned... Out of all the members of the Kingston family, you are definitely the best and most moral."
Ina slightly beamed upon hearing that.
The best and most moral?
The only good member of the Kingston family.
Even though she was technically a bastard child.
With a sigh, she glanced back toward Arthur.
"Thank you, Arthur," Ina thanked her older half-brother.
Arthur blinked as he watched his sister seem to look in higher spirits than before. He supposed he did a fine job at being her older brother. But knowing Ina, everything he said has probably yet to extinguish that fire in her system. That fire that desperately wished to make amends with the person she wronged.
Needless to say, when he suggested for some awesome sibling bonding time between the two of them, this wasn't exactly what he had in mind...
(Ultimate Supermodel's Cell)
When Mimi walked into the Ultimate Supermodel's Cell, she never expected to find Cassandra there of all places.
The fairytale writer froze.
How could she expect something like this? Or rather, how could this… murderer… even have the gall to stand in the Cell that belonged to one of her deceased friends?
Mimi thought about what she should do.
She could go over there and give her a piece of her mind right now, but there's a high chance that Cassandra would just go ahead and kill her right then and there. At the same time, Cassandra wasn't stupid. If she did that, she was as good as dead. (Of course, Mimi had no idea Cassandra was kind of working with White Collar at the moment so…)
But the decision to go up to Cassandra was kind of decided for her once she saw the Ultimate Scam Artist blindly stare at the stage.
Her eyes were giving away her vulnerability.
Was that a hint of… remorse?
Impossible.
Someone as cruel and horrible as Cassandra couldn't feel remorse. She clenched her fist. Just seeing this girl… this criminal… act like this…
It was pissing her off!
"How dare you," the words escaped her lips.
Cassandra tensed up, turned and put on that smirk Mimi was so used to seeing.
"O-Oh, well if it isn't the little witch freak," Cassandra shook her head. "You know, it would've been more normal for you to have asked something along the lines of 'What are you doing here?' 'Why are you here?' or 'How are you doing?' Y'know, basic manners and shit like that-"
"I know why you're here," Mimi glared at Cassandra. "You really think you can just stay here and mock Maggie like that? She was a good person and you took her life. You have no right to be here!"
Cassandra blinked before narrowing her eyes.
"And since when did the little crybaby start growing some balls, huh?" Cassandra looked visibly irritated. "You think you can get away with talking to me like that?"
"W-Why should I be scared?" Mimi actually kind of was. If Cassandra was going to hurt her, Mimi knew she wouldn't be able to fight back. "Someone has to remind you that you're a horrible person! You're nothing but a sad little witch who has to constantly belittle others because it makes you feel good!"
"And you…" Cassandra was now much more angry at what Mimi was spouting. She doesn't have to take this shit. Not from a stupid little girl like her! "...Are just a little girl who has no idea what the fuck she's talking about. I killed your friend. Keep saying shit like that, and I just might kill you too."
Mimi shrunk a bit.
Honestly, that threat was really damn scary. But Mimi couldn't let her win. For Maggie's sake! She tried her best to tense up.
"A-And if you do, that'll just keep proving what I said," Mimi frowned. "You're a horrible person. You're selfish. You're cruel. And you don't care about anyone but yourself!"
Cassandra froze.
If she really wanted to, she would beat the shit out of Mimi right then and there. But she remembered what White Collar had told her last night.
"Ah, but remember, the rules of the game still apply," White Collar added. "You kill someone else, that won't be so easy to cover up… If you understand what I mean…"
If she kills someone other than Arthur Kingston, there's no faking that execution. She's good as gone from this life. But that did beg the question. Why Arthur Kingston? Why him? She wanted to ask but she was suddenly cut off…
She refrained herself.
She had to.
For her father's sake.
"...And you just keep proving what I say…" Cassandra glowered over her. "You're just a little girl who has no idea what the fuck she's talking about."
The two glared at each other. Normally, Cassandra would storm off but Mimi still had more to say. Or rather, more to ask.
"...Was the money really so important that you had to kill Maggie over it?" Mimi's eyes were starting to sting from tears. Her voice was a little quieter this time around. "Was it really so important that you had to kill someone…?"
Cassandra's intense emotions settled down slightly.
She wasn't angry anymore. Now she was just only slightly remorseful.
But at the same time, it was like what Mimi had said earlier.
She had no right to feel this way.
"...You wouldn't understand," Cassandra grimaced.
"...I wish Barracuda voted for you instead," Mimi frowned.
Cassandra paused.
Another memory.
"...Heartless Miss Mura, who has killed one of their own, and has instead gone to meet with the devil instead," White Collar summarized. "Why would you care about sinners like them? As far as I know, they'll never accept you back into their group after what you've done. So, what other choice do you have to survive? I mean, aren't you a survivor?"
Cassandra clenched her fist.
Her only way out at this point was through the Devil's offer.
She had to kill Arthur Kingston.
…
But could she do it?
Cassandra turned to Mimi with a spiteful and yet pained look. But all Mimi saw was the monster that took Maggie's life. The murderer.
"Well he didn't," Cassandra said. "Because I'm a fucking survivor…"
That was the moment when Cassandra stormed off. She didn't need to take shit from some twerp like Mimi. But the point still stood that her position in this Killing Game was as good as fucked.
She had to get out.
She had to…
…
Mimi watched Cassandra leave and turned back to the fashion runway in the main stage area of the Ultimate Supermodel's Cell. She breathed a sigh of relief. Tears flowed out of her eyes. She had never stood up to someone before. She felt her heart beating quicker than usual.
It was quite a scary experience.
Especially since the person she stood up to was a murderer. In what universe would she have ever stood up to Cassandra Mura? Apparently, this one!
She looked around.
She hugged Sailor Penguin tightly.
"Big Sis Maggie, Barracuda, Yuumi," she quietly mumbled to herself. "I miss you guys…"
(Security Office)
"Wow, it's a little stuffier here than it was yesterday," Abigail tried to breathe in whatever fresh air she could muster out. "Kind of hot too."
It was almost making her feel faint as well.
"...One of the perks of being inside a cave filled with machinery I guess," Holland shrugged.
"Is this the camera system here?" Jared asked, pointing to the left side of the Security Office's control board.
"What does GC mean?" Zuri asked, trying to contribute and learn how this would work.
"Okay, okay, one question at a time, alright," Haruto sighed. "Yes Jared, the camera system is on the left side of the control board. The right side controls everything else in the Mineshaft. Basically, just an On and Off switch for the Minecart System and the Grinder."
Haruto then turned to Zuri.
"And as for you," Haruto began. "We have no idea what the fuck GC means."
"It's the one thing that Monohebi hasn't mentioned," Abigail shook her head. "Probably some history thing around it. But essentially, the GC buttons control the doors to the Ultimate Cells."
"...I see," Jared rubbed his chin. "But wait. There are only three Ultimate Cells, though. If that's the case then what the hell is GC 4? And why are two of the buttons unlit?"
"Again, one question at a fucking time, please," Haruto sighed.
"Look, according to Monohebi, this place is old as hell," Abigail sighed, rubbing her head exhaustedly. "So old that only two of the Ultimate Cell doors actually work. Zuri's Cell and Maggie's Cell."
"And GC 4?" Zuri blinked.
"Who knows?" Abigail yawned.
"Another thing about the doors," Haruto began. "If you go ahead and press one of the lit buttons, the door is closed and you get a timer. Look."
Haruto pressed GC 3 and the 5-minute timer popped up.
"You get 5 minutes to decide to press the button again if you want to keep the door open," Haruto explained. "If you want to keep it closed, just wait out the five minutes. But keep in mind that to reopen it again, you gotta go back down and open whatever door you closed with an eHandbook. And then the door will reboot for another five minutes and then open."
Haruto pressed GC 3 and the 5-minute timer shut off.
"That… is a really stupid system," Jared commented.
"Yeah, why would they implement something like that?" Zuri furrowed her eyebrows.
"Maybe to keep a robot bear from escaping," Holland remarked.
Everyone turned to Holland, confused.
"...Look, I had a weird summer job," Holland flipped a hoodie over his head, slightly embarrassed and not willing to disclose details.
"Now, as for the camera systems themselves…" Haruto gestured to the four buttons they could play around with on the monitors:
Rewind.
Pause.
Play.
Fast Forward.
"You got four buttons," Haruto merely stated.
"According to Monohebi…" Abigail took over this part. "The camera system works like a livestream. It records everything in real time. But if you want to go back and see something you might've missed, you just play around with these buttons. It won't mess with what the camera sees. It'll just mess with the camera monitors themselves."
"I see," Jared tipped his hat. "And judging by the camera monitors themselves, there's a lot of blind spots..."
"Blind spots?" Abigail blinked.
"It's a classic thing for most security camera systems," Jared explained. "But I think White Collar made his intentions way too obvious with the way some of these cameras are placed. I mean, you can't even see half of the Mineshaft in the Mineshaft Security Footage."
"Meaning it would still be easy for someone to sneak past the cameras..." Holland nodded.
"Wow, this really is a complex system," Zuri blinked, rubbing her head slightly.
"At least you don't have to wind a music box…" Holland remarked with a sigh.
Everyone turned to Holland, much more confused this time.
"...Weird summer job, again," Holland cleared his throat.
"Well, that's pretty much it," Haruto placed his hands on his hips. "You guys got it or do you need Abigail or me to repeat something?"
"Oh, Abigail, you said you needed headphones, right?" Zuri blinked. "I assume it's for this camera monitor that says, 'Audio Recording Only', right?"
"Oh yeah, I did say that didn't I?" Abigail had already forgotten.
That's what happens when you don't sleep. Especially one SilverMark16 who sleeps at 6 in the morning cause he's doing shit at night.
"Yeah, these cameras also record audio too," Abigail said. "But the only way to hear it is with headphones."
"I see," Zuri nodded. "Then I'll go ahead and get the headphones from Ultimate Cell supplied here tomorrow morning!"
"Speaking of which, we're going to need to figure out shifts between whoever's going to be monitoring the camera systems of Cell Block S," Jared stated.
"...Well, to decide that we should figure out who wants to do it," Holland stated. "Obviously, Jared and Zuri want the job. I kind of want to do it too but Haruto and Abigail? You two want to have a stab at it as well? You two seem to understand the basic mechanisms of the systems so…"
"Fuck no," Haruto responded. "I have better shit to do than watch cameras all day."
"And I have a sleeping problem," Abigail yawned. "I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help when it comes to surveillance."
"So, it's just me, Holland, and… Zuri," Jared sighed.
"H-Hey, why'd you say it like that?" Zuri pouted.
"...Then we should probably divide it based on a three-way system…" Holland noted. "Someone can take a Morning to Evening shift. The second person can take the Evening to Afternoon shift. And then the third person can take the Afternoon to Nighttime shift. Does that sound fair?"
"I'll take the Evening to Afternoon shift," Jared and Zuri immediately volunteered.
"Well, great start to that idea," Haruto sighed.
"Okay, let me ask a question then," Jared frowned. "Why should you be the one to take the Evening to Afternoon shift?"
"Well, because most of these incidents occur around that time!" Zuri frowned. "I want to act accordingly if something ever happens."
"Okay, then let me ask another question," Jared shook his head. "Why should you be the one to take the Evening to Afternoon shift?"
"That's the same question you just asked before!" Zuri exclaimed.
"Exactly," Jared tipped his hat down. "You're saying that if something happens, you'll be able to run down the stairs and dash straight toward wherever the situation is happening and keep things from escalating without being out of breath?"
"What?" Zuri blinked before pouting. "And you can?"
"I've done it numerous times," Jared boasted. "So yeah. I like my chances."
"Hey, should we… go now?" Abigail blinked, gesturing to her and Haruto.
"No," Jared and Zuri both simultaneously said. "Both of you stay!"
"...But why…" Abigail sighed quietly.
Abigail and Haruto did their job. Why did they have to stay to watch whatever fight was going on, huh?
"Fuck this," Haruto shook his head. "If you both want it so badly, then you both don't get it. Holland, you're taking the Evening to Afternoon shift."
"...Huh?" Holland blinked. That was an outcome he certainly didn't expect. "O-Oh… okay…"
"You know what?" Zuri was slightly disappointed that it wasn't her, but hey, at the same time, it was her boyfriend, so it was still a win in her book. "I think that's fair!"
Zuri gave a small nod toward Holland.
"What?" Jared frowned. "Then what shift am I taking?"
"You can take Afternoon to Night," Haruto pointed to Jared before pointing to Zuri. "And you can take Morning to Evening. Now can we leave?"
"W-Wait, what if I want Morning to Evening instead–" Jared was about to say before Haruto cracked his knuckles.
"Oi, I will beat the shit out of you…" Haruto threatened.
That was when a surprise hit them like a rock. Which was kind of funny because the Mineshaft was filled with rock piles and the likes. But seriously, the surprise came in the form of an announcement…
"Attention all prisoners," came the voice of one Monohebi. "Please report to the Auditorium for a special announcement from your warden and my master, White Collar. Attendance is mandatory. That is all. See you soon."
"Thank Christ!" Haruto sighed in relief, glad that they could finally leave.
"Wait… No, this is a terrible sign," Abigail murmured.
Mandatory attendance?
Auditorium?
Special announcement?
Could it really be? But it was so early…! It couldn't be right?
"...This is a little too early to be happening," Holland noted. "It isn't just me, right?"
"Yeah…" Jared clenched his fist.
"Don't tell me…" Zuri widened her eyes.
It can't be!
…Regardless of whether it was or not, the five, although having differing opinions, could settle on one agreement. This was suspicious. This was unsettling. What exactly did White Collar have in plan for them this time?
Okay, that was technically two agreements and a question but still…
It was hard to think that whatever was going to happen next was going to be a good thing.
(Auditorium)
The surprise announcement came without a warning. After all, that's the point of a surprise! But seriously, for Monohebi to announce that everyone had to be in the Auditorium a day after they had discovered the new Cell Block S rooms was kind of suspicious! There was no way White Collar had another motive planned… No way it could be this early, right?
Once all nine of the prisoners arrived at the Auditorium, they waited to see if their suspicions were true or not…
…And those suspicions only got worse with the appearance of the sinister White Collar and his assistant, Monohebi.
Today, White Collar's grin seemed to be much wider than it usually was. Whatever he had planned, it couldn't be good, right?
"Welcome prisoners," White Collar greeted with a polite bow. He leaned against his corroded cane, maintaining that vile look on his face. "You know, I have quite forgotten just how small the group has become since we started. I suppose after three rounds of killing and executing, you all should know how this will go."
"Wait, is it Minigame time?" Haruto blinked, glancing around. "The fuck? That's so early!"
"Believe me, Mister Walker," White Collar placed a finger over his grinning mask. "You'll need all the time in the world for this one."
"Wait, it really is Minigame time?" Zuri looked definitely surprised by that one.
Haruto was right. This was earlier than White Collar had usually started it and everyone was sharing the same surprised expression that she was. White Collar had also stated that the earlier this Minigame started, the better, which was a huge red flag for whatever he had planned.
"What do you have for us this time?" Jared seemed visibly ticked off that White Collar was still being allowed to force them to play his game.
"Yeah, and whatever it is, I think we all know what we have to do now!" Mimi exclaimed.
They've been forced to play Minigames for three consecutive rounds. With how many people were left, at some point, they all should learn to just choose Trust, right?
"Do you now?" White Collar chuckled, sinisterly. "Those are some strong words, Miss de la Vega. How can you say something like that now that there is a murderer amongst you? And not just a murderer… but a couple of traitors as well."
"Traitors?" Mimi blinked.
"Traitors?" Abigail looked equally confused. "As in… more than one?"
"That is how the English language works, yes Miss Ellsworth," White Collar pointed the sharp protruding end of his cane toward the equestrian. "Today's Minigame will be a classic game of Guess Who. Once the rules of this Minigame are explained, some of your fellow prisoners will be assigned the role of Traitor. The goal of the Minigames is to find out who the traitors are… and kill them."
"Whoa whoa, this seems a little unfair, doesn't it?" Haruto gritted his teeth. "I mean, why the fuck are the traitors the target here? I mean, how many traitors are there gonna be?"
"...Not only that, but we also get one chance to figure out who the traitors are, right?" Holland asked.
"Keh, that's where you're wrong Mister Delaney," White Collar slowly extended out his arms like the cross. "Remember when I said that you'll need all the time in the world for this one? For this special Minigame, it will be played every day until somebody is killed!"
"E-Everyday?" Zuri covered her mouth.
Most of the prisoners' faces slowly paled. A Minigame everyday. That was so much worse than they had thought.
"Monohebi, would you please?" White Collar gestured to his scaly assistant.
"Of course Master," Monohebi nodded. "The rules for this particular version of Prisoner's Dilemma will be quite complex so please pay attention. I will only explain this once."
Monohebi pressed a button on the projector with the end of her tail to help her explain the rules.
"This next round of Prisoner's Dilemma is titled: Guess Who," Monohebi began. "As Master White Collar has stated, this Minigame is available from now until a body is discovered. However, please note that while most Minigames require mandatory attendance, only today's round of Guess Who is. Every other round starting tomorrow is optional. But also note that if you do not attend, your vote will default to Trust and whoever your opponent is, may end up using that to their advantage. And believe me, you do not want that. Any questions so far?"
"So to summarize," Arthur frowned. "Only today's game is mandatory and all other games onward are optional. But at a certain price that will leave us vulnerable…"
"Precisely," Monohebi nodded. "Very good, Mister Kingston."
Arthur really didn't like being congratulated by a snake of all things.
"The ultimate goal for the Minigame is to figure out who the assigned Traitors are," Monohebi continued her explanation. "Which means these Minigames are for investigative usages. Like the past rounds of Prisoner's Dilemma, you have to choose between Trust and Distrust. This is how you will receive your information."
Monohebi showcased two stick figures on the screen with what seemed to be their IDs above them.
"If both players choose to Trust, both of them will receive information," Monohebi explained. "Likewise, if both players choose to Distrust, both of them will receive nothing."
The two stick figures showcased what Monohebi had said. When the two stick figures chose Trust, they shared their IDs and cheered. But when the two stick figures chose Distrust, the two stick figures looked down in disappointment.
"And this information is…?" Cassandra asked, slightly nervous.
She was technically a traitor so does that mean White Collar would be this quick to rat her out? Was this what he meant by surprise? Was this the opportunity he mentioned?
"My apologies," White Collar chuckled. "I suppose I was a little ecstatic when you accepted my deal yesterday. I just thought you'd act as soon as possible. That's all. I mean, I had prepared motivation for you. I gave you trinkets and treats. But you had just reminded me of something. Yes, I forgot one important thing..."
Cassandra breathed a sigh in relief that he wasn't going to kill her or anything but still held her breath for what he was going to say next. Either case, that was fucking scary as shit.
"A-And what exactly is that?" Cassandra asked, a little nervous.
"...Opportunity," White Collar grinned as he placed a finger over his mask's lips. "But until then, no peeking. You'll ruin the surprise."
"Whether your opponent is Innocent or a Traitor," Monohebi answered Cassandra, slightly hissing at her face.
Cassandra didn't seem to notice.
"However, if one player chooses Trust and the other chooses Distrust…" Monohebi slowly began, her eyes glinting. "The one who chooses Distrust will not only receive information about their opponent but they will also get a chance to choose one of the three Advantages previously offered. However, they should also choose wisely, because whatever they choose, is what Disadvantage the player who chose Trust would receive. Oh, and the Distruster gets to also hide their information from their opponent as well."
One of the stick figures then chose Trust while the other chose Distrust. The one who chose Distrust cheered as it then glanced above its head to see three different options while the one who chose Trust fell down to the ground, angry that they had lost.
"Wait, what?" Mimi blinked.
"...You're saying that whoever chooses to Distrust a Trust, they get to pick between having that eHandbook Advantage, the Nighttime Advantage, and money?" Holland blinked.
"Let me provide an example," Monohebi nodded. "If the Distruster chooses the eHandbook Advantage, they will be able to access any room that requires an eHandbook reader. However, this will also mean that the one they Distrust will receive a video of a loved one and will be given 24 hours to save their life by killing someone else."
"I see, so then whoever chooses the Nighttime Advantage will also force their opponent to get a video of their most hated subject and the offer to take their place in the Killing Game," Ina bit her finger. That was her Disadvantage after all!
"And the money?" Jared asked. "How is that one going to work?"
"Well, that's simple," Monohebi flicked her tongue out. "If you have any remaining bounty on your head and choose that Advantage, you will simply dump whatever you have onto your opponent."
"Wait what?!" Zuri looked shocked to hear that.
This was a seriously messed up and convoluted motive!
"For example," Monohebi began. "Miss Auraline. You currently have a one-million-dollar bounty on your head. If you successfully Distrust your opponent, who we will say is Mister Delaney, and choose the Bounty Advantage, you will dump your one-million-dollar bounty onto Mister Delaney and therefore, his one-million-dollar bounty will now equate to two million dollars. Simple."
"S-So you can go above one million now?" Mimi looked definitely scared of these outcomes. "Th-That's crazy!"
"That is the Minigame," Monohebi plainly stated. "Now, as for the motive itself… Master White Collar has already stated that after my explanation, some of you will be assigned the role of Traitor. Whoever kills a Traitor, will get to leave the facility, with no Prison Trial required."
Cassandra froze. This sounded awfully familiar…
"Similarly, in fairness to the traitors, if the Traitors kill an Innocent, they will also get to leave the facility for free," Monohebi nodded her head. "However, if a Traitor kills the other Traitor or if an Innocent kills another Innocent… that's too bad."
"Prison Trial time," Mimi frowned, looking down.
"Which is why both sides are going to want to play these upcoming Minigames," Monohebi stated. "So, if any of them wish to kill someone to leave, they better hope they kill the right person."
"I got it," Ina folded her arms. "Perhaps we should show each other who we are after the Traitors are assigned. That way, we will not have to play this Minigame."
"Counter rule, you are not allowed to show each other whether you are Innocent or a Traitor," Monohebi deadpanned.
"Okay, but one problem here," Arthur frowned. "There's nine of us left. How are the rounds going to be divided up this time?"
"Ah, that's right," Monohebi nodded. "I nearly forgot. For this Minigame, Master White Collar and I have decided to allow all of you to decide who your opponents will be. That way, it feels more like detective work, don't you agree?"
"So, we can decide who we want to pair up against?" Abigail blinked, slightly drooping her eyes a little.
"Of course," Monohebi nodded. "It's first come first serve though. All you really have to do is come up to me and tell me who you wish to be paired with. Since there are nine of you, one person will be allowed to team up with someone. This will give your opponent the chance to possibly knock out two birds with one stone, however. So be mindful of who you choose to team up with and who you will be facing off against. But at the same time, if you are a Traitor, then it's a good way to hide your identity..."
The nine prisoners took a moment to review the information they were just given. It was a lot of information, but it was also information that would make sense the more they played too… But essentially, what everyone (except maybe the audience so this is just to help you) was able to understand was…
This minigame will be played every day until a body is discovered.
Attendance will be optional after today's round.
Trust each other and you both see whether the other person is Innocent or a Traitor.
Distrust each other and you get no information.
Distrust someone who Trusts, and you get both the information and a choice of one of the previous three Advantages.
Whatever they choose, will determine what Disadvantage the Truster gets.
There is more than one Traitor.
If an Innocent kills a Traitor, they go free.
If a Traitor kills an Innocent, they go free.
If an Innocent and a Traitor kills anyone on the 'same side' so to speak, a Prison Trial will start.
You are not allowed to show people whether you are Innocent or a Traitor.
And finally, everyone got to choose who they get to go against this time.
A lot, but that was the general rundown of all that expositional explanation of extremely evil, educational, and entertaining dialogue.
Alliteration is awesome.
"Now then," White Collar clapped his hands together. "That is all for the rules. In about two minutes, some of you will be assigned the role of Traitor. After that, feel free to converse amongst yourselves on who you wish to be paired up with! You only have five minutes to do so however!"
…
Soon, everyone received a ping on their eHandbooks to notify them of what role they received. Once everyone checked their eHandbooks, some faces twitched slightly, and soon, everyone got together to talk about who they would be pairing up against and one was more focused on teaming up with someone. Realistically though, the pairings were so damn easy.
"Abs!" Haruto waved Abigail over to both him and Mimi. "Team of three? You and Mimi versus me? Sound good?"
"I think it'll be better if you teamed up with Abigail though, Haruto," Mimi blinked.
"Yeah, well this way, you can rest easy that I won't Distrust you this time," Haruto gave her a thumbs-up. "I would never Distrust Abs, for sure!"
"...Fair enough," Abigail shrugged with a yawn. "Guess we're a team of two for this round, Mimi."
"I guess so," Mimi was slightly disappointed. She was hoping that Abigail and Haruto got to be together but hey, maybe next time! Right?
...
"Some more sibling bonding time," Arthur extended his arm with a smirk toward Ina, who was currently watching Mimi from afar. Truthfully, she would have loved to play against Mimi and try to prove something to her. After all, most of the way people played this game was proving that they did Trust someone that clearly hated them.
Cough cough, Arthur.
"Ina?" Arthur perked his head.
"...Ah, sorry, half-brother," Ina cleared her throat. "What were you saying?"
"I was saying that we should be opponents for this round," Arthur stated. "With our current status, I know the results will come out quite nicely. Don't you agree?"
Ina folded her arms. She snuck a glance toward Mimi before sighing slightly.
"Sure, I suppose," Ina glumly noted.
Arthur watched her gaze back toward Mimi before sighing. She was still hung up over this guilt. He couldn't blame her. It was as he had said before. She was definitely the most moral out of the Kingston family members.
...
"...I guess we're opponents," Holland rubbed the back of his neck as he glanced toward Zuri. "That is if you want to..."
"Pfft, of course I do," Zuri giggled. "This will be the easiest Minigame out of all of them so far for sure I would think!"
Zuri pumped her fists with a determined look.
"Let's do our best!" she declared.
Holland's face turned a tinted pink.
"...Yeah..." Holland nodded.
God. She was cute.
...
As for the last pair. Well, their conversation went something along the lines of...
"Guess it's just us now," Cassandra deadpanned.
"Yep," Jared nodded. "Guess so."
And then five minutes were up.
…
Monohebi slithered up to the stage, now with the information given to her about what the pairings will be this time around. Pairings? Well, pairings and then a 1v2. Yeah, that's the way to put it:
"Pair A: Abigail and Mimi vs. Haruto
Pair B: Arthur vs Ina
Pair C: Cassandra vs Jared
Pair D: Holland vs Zuri"
"You all know how the rest of this works now," Monohebi nodded before giving her one of her many signature announcements:
"Ten minutes until Prisoner's Dilemma: Guess Who begins…"
"Wow!" Mimi gasped. "A game with Big Bro Haruto and Sleeping Beauty Abigail!"
To recap slightly farther back from the instructions, Mimi seemed to be feeling much better after standing up to the scary Cassandra Mura like that. In fact, she felt better than better. She felt absolutely great! Was this what being strong felt like? Cause goddamn, what a rush!
"Big Bro Haruto?" Haruto blinked before rubbing the back of his neck. "Huh. I kinda like that."
"Sleeping Beauty isn't that bad of a nickname I guess," Abigail yawned. "It's better than Abs at least…"
"Oi, Abs, make sure you and Mimi agree on Trust, alright?" Haruto ordered.
"Idiot," Abigail seemed slightly embarrassed by him doing it anyway.
"Of course, we'll agree on Trust!" Mimi exclaimed. "But Haruto, are you really really sure you didn't want to be on a team with Abigail? I mean, the Sleeping Beauty and her Pri- I mean… Sleeping Beauty and Big Bro Haruto seem like the ultimate dream team!"
"...What was that first part?" Haruto caught her near slip-up.
"Um, we'll agree on Trust?" Mimi blushed in embarrassment.
"No no, the other–" Haruto tried to say before he was interrupted.
"I don't know what Haruto's so worked up about, but the point is, you're going to choose Trust right?" Abigail blankly stared at Haruto.
"Of course, I fucking am," Haruto nodded. "I said I would never Distrust you. And besides, I'm an asshole to only those that deserve it!"
"I didn't deserve it in the first round…" Mimi pointed out. A while callback but it was definitely a memory that popped into her head.
To think that Haruto and Mimi's relationship went from some little kid annoying some angry dude to a big brother and little sister relationship. Honestly, it was quite the development for the two!
"U-Uhhhh, w-we don't talk about that first round," Haruto looked downright ashamed of what he tried to pull.
Regardless, the trio agreed on choosing Trust. Abigail and Mimi were to share a Voting Chamber and choose Trust while Haruto would choose Trust in return. It was the perfect plan and with a trio like them, the results should be pretty obvious! Optimism was key!
Right?
...
In comparison to Abigail, Mimi, and Haruto's little discussion, Arthur and Ina's discussion was similarly quick and easy. Their quote-on-quote hangout was somewhat wholesome… and by wholesome, we mean wholesome for a typical Kingston sibling moment standard. At the moment, Ina was especially satisfied with how Arthur practically called her the best of the Kingston family. But at the same time, it also had her thinking…
…Did that mean Arthur truly acknowledged himself to not be a good person?
Ina stared at Arthur a little more than she should trying to figure this out. Once her half-brother turned to her, she glanced away.
"You are voting Trust, correct?" Arthur asked.
"O-Of course," Ina nodded. "After all, you have proven that you do care about me so… I suppose I also have no reason to Distrust you. And I also care little about the Advantages that will be offered to me anyway."
"You've made your point," Arthur nodded his head in agreement. "While this bounty on my head is troublesome, I wouldn't dare send my bounty over to you. And the other Advantages are quite a bore as well."
Arthur and Ina stood in complete acknowledgement that they were pretty much agreeing with each other here.
"So, this means you will be voting Trust as well, yes?" Ina asked.
"Of course," Arthur nodded toward her with a look of assurance. "I just hope you will do the same for me this time."
Ina glanced away from Arthur before instinctively nodding her head in return.
See?
Quick and easy.
With a hope that both siblings would be true to their word…
...
Cassandra could only look at Jared with uncertainty.
She had a lot on her mind after all. Her conversation with Mimi practically told her that her time in this life was as good as up if she didn't go through with White Collar's plan. And unfortunately, since everyone else buddied up with each other, she was kind of stuck with Jared, whose relationship with her was definitely dwindling into its final days.
"So, guess we're opponents again," was all Jared said.
"...Guess so," Cassandra tried to look as if she was unbothered by this.
"So, let me guess," Jared frowned. "You're going to choose Distrust again, right?"
"Pft, of course," Cassandra crossed her arms. "I can't Trust you because you obviously don't Trust me. You know, since I ruined your image of what Plan B was…"
"...You never bothered to explain yourself to me," Jared pointed out.
Cassandra remained silent.
Of course. She never did. And she didn't want to. After all, how was he going to fare if she went ahead and said, "Hey! Guess what? I'm working with White Collar now! I'm going to kill Arthur Kingston and get out! So, sit tight, alright?"
Yeah right.
Jared wasn't going to accept that. He'll stop her. Just like everyone else.
Speaking of Jared, he noted her silence. With a sigh, he shook his head.
"Guess you're not going to tell me anytime soon, huh?" Jared frowned. "Guess I've made my choice."
Cassandra bit her lip. She glanced away.
She's made things so much worse for herself.
...
Holland and Zuri glanced at each other.
Zuri could tell that Holland was especially nervous of this motive. But her reason was that Monohebi and White Collar had pretty much brought back a motive from their very first round. A motive that forced Holland to go out and attack Titus. She couldn't blame him for feeling that way. And now with the added bonus that if he Trusted someone who Distrusted him and they chose that eHandbook Advantage, he might have to live with the fact that his mother would be counting down to her final hour.
But honestly… that was only one reason Holland was so nervous. The other reason could only be told from Holland's perspective:
…He was nervous if Zuri might end up being one of those assigned Traitors. Would someone here really try to kill her if they found out she was? What would he do to counteract that? What could he do to protect her? So many thoughts flew through his mind. Likewise, if she was Innocent, would any of the Traitors try to target her? She did have a one-million-dollar bounty on her…
No. No.
He couldn't let that happ–
"Hey hey, Holland," Zuri held his hand assuredly. "Don't be so nervous. We'll just pick Trust like we should always do, right?"
"...I… I think you need to pick Distrust," Holland looked down.
"Eh?" Zuri blinked. She didn't expect that. "Why?"
"...Because if you pick Distrust and I pick Trust, you'll be able to get the Bounty Advantage," Holland explained. "You still have a one-million-dollar bounty on your head, and I want to lessen any motive that anyone would have to attack you."
"...But if I do that, you'll end up with two million dollars on your head," Zuri slightly frowned.
"...I'll take that over you becoming a prime target, any day," Holland looked away.
Zuri glanced at him curiously. Her mind registered what he had just said. She understood what was going on. Her cheeks blushed a tinted pink. He really cared that much for her. It was so cute. So sweet. So…
"Holland, you're really silly, you know that?" Zuri giggled slightly toward him.
"...D-Does that mean you'll Distrust me?" Holland blinked.
"Of course not," Zuri told him, holding up his hand and caressing his cheek. "I appreciate you wanting to protect me, but I meant it when I said we'll just pick Trust like we always do. If making you more of a target is what it takes to protect me, then I won't have it. You understand me, Holland?"
Holland blinked surprised.
Was she really okay with this?
Was she really…?
Zuri pecked him on the cheek, secretly, since not many people did know that their relationship was official.
"Let's Trust each other, okay?" Zuri smiled sweetly toward him.
"O…Okay," Holland nodded. He was a little unsure about Zuri's decision, but if this was what she wanted, then he should comply, right?
...
"Ten minutes have passed," came the voice of Monohebi. "The Minigame: Prisoner's Dilemma: Bounty Hunter will begin now. Please step inside the Voting Chambers within the next two minutes. Anyone who is not inside the Voting Chambers within the next two minutes will be unable to participate in the Minigame and thus, their vote will automatically be set to Trust by default. At least one person of every pair must vote otherwise, both members of the pair will be punished. That is all. As a reminder, please step inside the Voting Chambers within the next two minutes."
Hearing Monohebi's announcement, the prisoners hurried to snag a Voting Chamber.
Everyone had scanned their eHandbooks over the Handbook readers, letting the red lights flash green and waiting for the doors to open. Once the doors opened up, they hurried in.
...
Two minutes passed and everyone was already inside their respective Voting Chambers.
...
The door closed. Everyone made it inside the Voting Chambers. Two simple options once again on that Voting Tablet: Trust or Distrust.
…
…
…
…
…
Once the votes had been cast, the Voting Chambers opened back up for the prisoners. One by one, they exited as a projector was turned on. The fourth round of the Minigame had been completed. More will come. Now, it was time for the results.
"Here are the results for the Minigame: Prisoner's Dilemma," Monohebi announced. "Results have been accumulated thanks to the votes submitted by our participants. Thank you for playing the Minigame and good luck."
"Pair A: Abigail and Mimi [TRUST] vs. Haruto [TRUST]
Pair B: Arthur [TRUST] vs Ina [TRUST]
Pair C: Cassandra [DISTRUST] vs Jared [TRUST]
Pair D: Holland [TRUST] vs Zuri [TRUST]"
Holland blankly stared at the results.
Holland and Zuri had both chosen to Trust each other. Which was good, because that meant they Trusted each other, but at the same time, he still couldn't help but feel that the better result would have been him taking a couple of hits for Zuri if it meant she wouldn't be a viable target for if she really was the Traitor or an Innocent.
Speaking of which, Holland had to go and check the information he would have been given by Zuri later.
Right now, Zuri walked up to him with a smile and slugged him on his arm playfully.
"Now what was that about wanting me to Distrust?" Zuri asked Holland.
"...I'm sorry," Holland looked away, slightly embarrassed that he had the gall to try to get Zuri to serve him up on a platter like that. "I just… I just didn't want you to be a target for anyone…"
"And what made you think I wouldn't want the same for you," Zuri cupped his cheeks together with a slightly disappointed frown. "Listen to me Holland. We are getting out together, okay? So please don't suggest something like that again."
Holland blinked before blushing slightly. He supposed he was being selfish there. After all, he wasn't the only one who was willing to look after her. She was willing to look after him too. He had to constantly remember that playing hero was only going to hurt her more than actual help.
"...I understand," Holland nodded. "I just… thought it was the right thing to do."
He looked away, blushing in embarrassment.
Zuri watched him do this and cupped his cheek again.
"And despite me not really agreeing with it, I think it's very sweet that you want to look out for me, Holland," Zuri slowly leaned forward with a small smile. "Thank you."
She pressed her forehead against his.
"...It's hot in here," Holland's face was a deadly shade of red.
Zuri opened her eyes for a moment before realizing her face was blushing too. She's been getting more and more ballsy the more she hung out with Holland. In fact, the more she stayed near him, the more she really wanted to kiss him because he was just that cute to her.
"Y-Yeah, it really is," Zuri stayed in her position for a bit.
What the hell was she doing?
...
Mimi couldn't help but notice Holland and Zuri's little moment.
After all, they were far from being discreet about it. While it was obvious it would happen due to how close they were to each other from Day 1, it got her a little more hopeful to what could happen between Sleeping Beauty and her Prince Charming. Speaking of Prince Charming, Mimi turned to Haruto.
"Thanks for choosing Trust, Big Bro Haruto!" Mimi beamed.
She noticed Haruto wasn't speaking much. The former basketball player was glancing at Abigail from time to time. He held his eHandbook in his hands. His actions confused her. But the moment she turned to Abigail, everything made sense.
Abigail looked a little paler than usual. Perhaps it was the stress of the Minigame?
Which was odd because these results were kind of predictable.
"Um, Abigail?" Mimi asked, carefully. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Abigail rubbed her head with groggy eyes.
"Like hell you are," Haruto frowned. "Don't give us shit and tell us straight up. What's going on?"
He was definitely worried about her. Mimi decided to let Haruto handle this. But no matter how hard he tried to push for an explanation, Abigail kept responding with the same old excuse.
"N-Nothing," Abigail sighed, folding her arms. "I'm fine. Quit asking. You're being annoying."
"Yeah, well, you're kinda annoying me by giving me the same excuse," Haruto looked disappointed in her answer. "Just… talk to us. Talk to me…"
Abigail said nothing.
She kept her arms folded.
But her expression…
…It was that of exhaustion.
And sadness…
...
Cassandra blinked.
What?
Jared chose… Trust?
This… This didn't make any sense! W-Why?! Why would he do that? Doesn't he know the consequences of what might happen if he does?
The world would go crazy because this was the first time Jared has actually chosen Trust in one of these stupid Minigames!
The scam artist turned to Jared with a confused and heightened expression on her face.
"Are you an idiot?" Cassandra was seriously bewildered by his choice. "What the fuck is your game plan now? Why'd you choose to Trust me?"
Jared lowered his hat.
"Why shouldn't I?" Jared merely asked.
"Because–" Cassandra tried to say. "Because I'm not someone you should be trusting. I'm a fucking murderer for God's sake! I'm… I betrayed your Plan B! There should be no reason you should even Trust me in the first place!"
"...Cass," Jared crossed his arms, a serious expression on his face. "...I can tell when someone's in trouble."
Cassandra was surprised by his response.
"You're not telling me what the hell is going on," Jared frowned before lowering his voice so others wouldn't hear. "You're keeping something from me, meaning something big must've happened that night I freed you. Something bad. Or maybe, that's just what I want to believe…"
Jared chuckled to himself.
"...I can't believe you have that much blind faith in me," Cassandra gritted her teeth slightly. She glared at Jared. "Jared Caertas. You're a fucking idiot for doing this."
"...At least you know that whatever it is you're hiding from me, you can trust me with it," Jared told her. "Or… I hope you can. I've already given you so many freebies so why can't you give me this one…?"
Cassandra paused. She bit her fingers. There were so many conflicting thoughts going on in her mind at the moment.
"...Or maybe I'm being scammed," Jared pocketed his hands. "It's really up to you to decide what you want to do with this partnership…"
Cassandra said nothing.
Why did he have to make this so difficult?
Why did he have to make this so difficult for her, especially?
"Fuck you Jared," Cassandra cursed him. "Fuck you for making my job so much harder…"
Jared glanced at her, confused.
This got him more intrigued.
Job?
What job?
And how the hell was he making things harder for her?
...
The Kingston half-siblings faced each other shortly after checking the results that were presented toward them. Needless to say, the outcome wasn't that surprising. At the very least, both siblings had hoped that the other wouldn't betray the other out of nowhere and now, they were glad that they both stood by their word.
"Glad you chose Trust," Ina sighed in relief.
"Of course, I did," Arthur nodded. "I wouldn't go back on my word when it comes to you. You know this well."
Ina folded her arms.
That she does.
The amount of care and effort he puts into making sure she is treated as part of the family certainly feels warm and welcoming. But there was always a lingering question behind her mind. Was she satisfied by this?
After all, this was pretty much what she wanted.
Was it everything she had hoped it would be…?
"Are you alright Ina?" Arthur questioned.
Ina folded her arms and turned to Arthur with a small smile.
"Yes," she merely responded to him. "I think… I am…"
That was good to hear.
…
It had to be noted that White Collar merely stared at the results at hand. His mask's sinister grin had long faded to what seemed to be a look of disappointment. He leaned against his cane as Monohebi remained by his side. He was definitely not happy with the results that came out.
"Yo, White Collar," Haruto was the first to notice. "What's wrong? Didn't think we would all choose Trust, huh?"
"...Well, besides Cassandra that is," Holland corrected. "...But then again, Cassandra is Cassandra so…"
"Yeah, I'm gonna say fuck you and move on," Cassandra huffed as she crossed her arms.
White Collar said nothing as he stared at the screen for a moment. He had to wonder if perhaps he got a little too handsy with showing the Minigame so early. But at the same time… Perhaps this could just work out anyway… Right? He clutched onto his cane, tightly.
"Master?" Monohebi perked her head. "The prisoners expect a response…"
White Collar remained silent for a few moments before his mask widened back into that usual grin.
"Keh," White Collar merely chuckled. "I don't see why this is something to celebrate. Remember. There are more Minigames for the next upcoming days until a body drops. So, while I did hope there would be a little more Distrusters, I suppose the time will come for a future one."
"I don't think so!" Zuri pumped her fists. "We're going to keep Trusting! We're done playing your Minigames!"
"For once, I agree," Jared tipped his hat down. "We've played this game enough."
"...Hm, such optimism," White Collar rubbed his chin. "I wonder how long your Trust streak will last. I'm willing to bet it won't last past today. Keh heh."
"And I am willing to bet that you are worried," Ina smirked slightly. "Worried that no one will play along with your games anymore. Why else would you react this way to our results?"
White Collar remained silent.
He merely kept his cane close to his legs before chuckling. Of course, at this point, it was like he was forcing himself to chuckle. Could it be that they had started beating White Collar at his own game?
"Believe what you will," White Collar placed a finger over his grinning mask. "There's always one bad egg in the basket."
His eyes glinted toward Cassandra for a split second.
No one but Cassandra noticed.
She tensed up.
It was clear he was counting on her to strike.
"Very well then, congratulations on the results," White Collar bowed. "I will see you all tomorrow for the next round. For whoever chooses to participate that is. A clear reminder that the next upcoming rounds are all optional. But I do hope at least one of you shows up… I don't like standing here all by my lonesome…"
"You always have me Master," Monohebi stated.
"...Yes, of course I do," White Collar slightly sighed before returning back to his grin. "Well then. I'll see you prisoners later…"
Then backing away, White Collar soon disappeared with Monohebi shortly following behind. This left the other nine prisoners alone to their own vices.
…
"Guys, did you see that?" Mimi definitely looked the most excited about this. "White Collar looked a little lost for once! We're winning the game!"
"I wouldn't count on that just yet," Jared remarked, lowering his hat. "We still have future Minigames to play. And unfortunately, they won't stop coming until a body drops…"
"Aww man, but we should at least get some points for finally knocking that mean devil man off his snake!" Mimi pouted.
"Speaking of which, surprised you even voted Trust," Haruto noted, somewhat suspiciously. "To Cassandra of all people. What the fuck was that all about?"
Jared lowered his hat even further as he looked away.
"Thought I could change things up," Jared lied. "After all, I haven't voted Trust once in these Minigames. And now that I did, I joined those who are willing to fight against that bastard's game."
Of course, he was keeping out the fact that he still saw trustworthy potential in Cassandra and was doing it mostly in her favor.
"Should've done that in the beginning," Abigail sighed. Though, like she could say anything. She betrayed Titus Round 1. So that comment was both for Jared and for her as well.
"Which leaves that 'bad egg in the basket'," Arthur quoted what White Collar had mentioned. As he did so, he turned to that specific egg… one Cassandra Mura. "Who voted to Distrust instead of Trust."
Cassandra merely rolled her eyes.
"Pfft, like how was I supposed to know the cop was going to vote Trust?" Cassandra scoffed. "I did murder someone. Thought the general default in that scenario was picking Distrust…"
She's not wrong there. Picking Trust would be odd for anyone to do for a murderer. But Jared had his reasons and who were they to question anyone's reasons to Trust or Distrust. Plenty of people here had their own reason to do what they did…
"Regardless, I think we may have a new game plan," Ina folded her arms. "Especially for those future Minigames…"
And almost on cue, the usual announcement began…
"Attention all prisoners," Monohebi announced. "It is now midnight. Curfew hour begins now. As such, all prisoners must report to their confinements. Anyone who is caught outside of their confinements will be punished accordingly. Be sure to review the rules on the Rules App of your Handbook. That is all."
"Well, that's the signal," Jared sighed, scratching the back of his neck.
"We'll meet each other again tomorrow during the Morning Meeting," Zuri nodded her head. "Until then. Let's stay strong everyone! I think we can count today as a win!"
Appreciatively, everyone besides Cassandra shared looks of agreement. If they kept this up, perhaps… just perhaps they'll be out in no time… right?
Once Arthur returned to his room, he closed the door behind him.
Slowly, he untied his white tie and took off his white jacket and black button-up that he wore underneath his clothing. Tossing all of them across the bed, fellow audience members might be thinking they're getting some sort of Arthur strip scene. I'm here to tell you that FanFiction guidelines prevent me from showcasing such content… Maybe. Either case, rest assured, this is just Arthur taking his shirt off just so he can prepare to head to bed.
And as soon as he got ready to time skip the next day, he heard a ping from his eHandbook.
The snowboarder blinked.
Could it be?
The results of the Minigame were out already?
This was his chance to see what role his sister was. Was she Innocent and not much to worry about? Or was she a Traitor that he was going to have to protect with his life? Arthur was admittedly curious to find out.
So, before he headed to bed, he walked over to his eHandbook and opened it up to the corresponding application.
…
Nothing.
The results have yet to be sent out yet.
Then why did he get a ping…?
That's when Arthur saw it.
"W-What?" Arthur widened his eyes. "Wh-What on bloody Earth is going on…?"
He could've sworn that… That he was…
There was a new page for everyone in their Motives Application showcasing what their status was. Were they Innocent or a Traitor? But for Arthur, it was a much stranger sight…
He was…
…
…
…
…
…
Innocent.
…
…
…
No wait.
Traitor.
…
…
…
No!
Innocent!
…
…
…
Traitor…
…
…
…

Arthur didn't know anymore. Because the screen was practically glitching out. Glitching out between Innocent and Traitor. Glitching until it mashed into a confusing mashup between the two roles he could've been. And if it was glitching out then… Then what exactly was he?
And more importantly…
Why was this happening…?
Just watching the screen shift back and forth was enough to bring back something he didn't really miss all that much. Those damn headaches. Those memories…
Why the hell was all this happening to him…?
(Kitchen)
Abigail sipped a glass of water.
She sighed to herself. Her head was killing her. She was getting too dazed. Too sleepy. Too tired for all of this. She was reaching what many people would consider a breaking point. God… she wished there was a way out. She kept sipping that water.
She desperately needed it.
She rubbed her head.
She wondered if she was sick. She probably was. Exhaustion was no joke after all. She chugged the rest of that water and set that empty glass by the sink. God… She couldn't keep living like this.
She had to sleep.
Sooner or later, she had to sleep and stay asleep.
She rubbed her eyes.
She needed to sleep…
…
"Abs," of all places, Haruto came barging into the kitchen, with a concerned look on his face. She rubbed her head. She tried to remain strong. At least, for his sake.
She couldn't believe that out of everyone in this damn place, the one who seemed to care the most was Haruto Walker, that hothead. That… hot…
She shook her head out of that slight daze and tried to act like nothing was wrong.
"Haruto," Abigail snuck out a yawn. "I thought I told you to stop calling me that."
Haruto paused before placing a hand over his hips.
"I'll stop calling you that when you tell me what the hell is going on," Haruto sternly told her. "I mean, look at you. You look even worse than you did this morning!"
"Geez, is that your way of complimenting a lady on how she looks?" Abigail joked.
"I'm serious Abs," Haruto frowned. "You gotta tell me what the fuck is going on. Please…"
Abigail sighed. This wasn't a conversation she was comfortable in having. Why couldn't Haruto understand that? She tried to walk past Haruto, but Haruto blocked her path. He wasn't going to let her leave so easily.
"Haruto, come on," Abigail frowned. "Knock it off. It's literally past curfew. We shouldn't even be out here right now."
Immediately, an eHandbook was roughly shoved into her hands. She blinked slightly before opening it up.
It was Yuumi's eHandbook.
"There, you got the Nighttime Advantage," Haruto gruffly stated. "Just like me. So we can literally do this all night."
Abigail frowned. She was definitely not liking how she was being forced to tell Haruto her life story. No. She wasn't having it.
"Move," Abigail frowned.
"No," Haruto frowned back. "Not until you tell me what's going on."
"There's nothing going on, Haruto," Abigail sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I'm fine. Now let me pass and go and take back Yuumi's eHandbook alright? I don't want this stupid Advantage."
"That's not how this works," Haruto grumbled.
"Well, it is now," Abigail tried to give back the eHandbook but Haruto wasn't going to budge.
Abigail looked very annoyed now. But that level of annoyance softened when she saw Haruto's eyes. It didn't even look like he was irritated or angry like he usually was. Right now, he was helplessly worried. Concerned… for her.
"...Why can't you tell me what the fuck is going on?" Haruto mumbled, biting his lip.
"...Because nothing is going on," Abigail sighed before with every strength she had, she pushed past Haruto's attempt at blocking the Kitchen door. "Now let me go back to my room…"
"Wait Abs, please!" Haruto tried to chase after her.
…
…
…
That's when it happened.
"A-Abs?" Haruto blinked.
Abigail's eyes grew heavy.
…
And she collapsed.
"A-Abs," Haruto had to take a moment to register what the hell had just happened. "Abs… A-ABIGAIL!"
Haruto rushed to Abigail's side as he attempted to shake her awake. He felt her pulse. It was still there but it was weak. Weaker than a normal human pulse. He shook his head violently. Fear and terror were visibly shown through his vibrating pupils.
"No no no no no, come on," Haruto carried the unconscious equestrian bridal-style. "Come on, stay with me. Stay with me here Abigail. Please."
With no other choice, he carried Abigail to the Infirmary, limping as he did so. And every time he tried to limp forward, he often felt that he himself was about to collapse on the ground because of his broken leg.
No…
He couldn't let his broken leg stop him.
He had to take her to the Infirmary.
He had to make sure she was okay.
Goddamn it!
God fucking damn it, Abigail!
Why didn't you say anything?
Why couldn't you tell anyone what was going on?
Why try so hard to assure people that you were fine?
As Haruto carried her past the Auditorium, he could feel how soft her breathing was. He wasn't even sure if she was going to be okay. And that was the worst part about all of this. He was scared.
Scared for her…
"For God's sake, Abigail!" Haruto yelled as he struggled to get to the Infirmary as fast as he could. "Stay with me! Please!"
Stay with me…
Stay with me, goddamn it!
DANGANRONPA: CORRUPTED HOPE
Here it is! The second part of Chapter 4 Daily Life! God, I need to fix my sleep schedule...
You know what I also need to do? Write Trial Part 1 for this damn Chapter because I have to kinda rewrite everything. I have stuff planned for it, but it all comes down to the execution of set plans. Speaking of set plans, I really didn't have everything pieced together before I wrote some of these scenes. I had to edit a lot of these scenes, specifically the scenes with the Kingston siblings since I didn't really like how I tackled their interaction when I first wrote them.
I suppose I'm learning just how hard it is to actually write Chapter 4 because Chapter 4 is a Chapter where plot points need to start wrapping up and new big plot points shouldn't appear much often otherwise it just makes things overwhelming. And as you can see, one of the big plot things that's been happening is Abigail's little sleeping habit finally reaching its breaking point. What will happen to her?
Who knows except me :D
Either case, that's all I really wanted to say! Let me know what you thought about the Chapter! Loved or hated it? Leave me something to let me know and if it feels a little rushed and insecure in some places, I will say that I kinda did rush some of the editing process cause of classroom time so hahaha XD
Until then, next time for Daily Life Part 3 :D And hopefully I also get Trial Part 1 done as well XE
