This is the 9th chapter of Pokemon Re: Dux and coincidentally, it's being uploaded on basically the anniversary of its release on the platform!
(I've only had the will to write for about 4 months, so have only been starting recently which is why it took a year for me to start - Sorry)
In honor of the anniversary chapter, there will be special author's notes at the end of the Chapter, basically just trivia about the series.
Anyways, time to dive into Chapter 9!
2027 - Unova, Star City Retsuko's Apartment
After another hour of Via wrecking Kyu in every game they played, Via's boredom grew and Kyu got tired of losing.
"Yup, I'm done," Kyu said as Via's digital Braixen-themed car beat Kyu's Mimikyu Themed one in the racing game.
"Where are you off to?" Via asked as Kyu walked to the couch, plopping onto it.
He opened his phone and started scrolling through it.
Via peered over him and sighed.
"I should check on Retsuko. He's been out for a while and I'm getting kinda worried." Via thought.
She hopped off the couch and woke up Vye, who was sleeping on her lap.
Vye stumbled to her feet and began to mindlessly follow her, still tired.
Via went to the kitchen and took out some Moomoo Milk and popped it into the microwave, and then some berries which she placed in the blender.
She opened a bag and took out 1 tablespoon of extra finely ground coffee with powder consistency.
"If I remember correctly, Retsuko likes a lot of caffeine and sweets in his Coffee. -Vye, hand me the sugar and Coffee Creamer." Via said.
Vye walked over to the cabinet and hopped onto the counter so she could reach it, opening the door and taking out a Coffee Creamer and a bag of salt instead of sugar.
She handed the ingredients to Via, who poured them into the cup along with the finished Coffee brew.
Via mixed everything together and added a whipped Cream pattern on the top of the cup, and then turned on the blender.
She pulled a cup holding tray out of the cabinet, drained the berry juice from the blender into a mug, and placed them both into the tray.
Via picked up the tray and headed for the door with Vye running over and opening it for her.
Via went down the Apartment complex stairs and looked around at the scenery.
Retsuko lived in a reasonably luxurious apartment, with grand red halls and a large garden on the top floor near the penthouse.
Via hadn't noticed during all of the Plaza commotions but she felt uncomfortable in the environment of the wealthy.
They made their way to the first floor and saw Retsuko in the distant field.
Via and Vye rushed over to him as quickly as Via could with a hot tray of coffee in her hands and stopped a meter away from him.
Retsuko and Rio stood side by side and Kaz stood across from them, with Retsuko's other pokemon spectating.
"Rio, Stone edge!" Retsuko ordered.
Rio stamped her front paws into the ground and a line of rock pillars shot out of the earth in the Buizel's direction.
Retsuko raised his hand up.
"Kaz. Every kata starts and finishes with the sword sheathed."
"STEP!" He ordered.
Kaz marched forward with her paws as if holding a sheathed blade on her hips.
"SWING!" Retsuko ordered again, and Kaz drew out her paw swiftly in the formation of a quick Iaido slash.
A burst of water exploded from the middle of her paws, creating a blade of compressed water for a second but then stopped after reaching the tip of the blade and surged back into the hilt in a wave. In less than a second, the water dispersed, and Kaz failed to stop the rock pillars from nearly hitting her.
"Fire Pledge!" Via ordered out to Vye, who took out her stick from her tail and breathed a burst of fire into it that destroyed the incoming rocks and saved Kaz.
Kaz stared at Vye, amazed by her show of strength, and urgently got back into position.
"Kaz must not be able to hold the charge of water efficiently. She can generate the power, transfer it to water and form it into a blade, but she can't make use of it..."
Retsuko thought for a moment.
"Like a phone and a charger! She can generate and transfer the water but she can't display it and use it, just like a phone!" Retsuko said, smashing his fist into his palm in realization.
He turned and noticed Via standing behind him with the tray.
"Oh, hey Via. I thought that Fire Blast came from Sol." He said, walking over to her.
The Volcarona's expression became one of panic after being discovered, and she backed up as awkwardly as a 5'03 fire moth could.
"Nope, just me..." Via said, joining Retsuko as they both went for the bench.
"I kinda got a bit worried about you guys so I made some coffee and came to check in." She explained.
Via handed Retsuko the warm cup and he sat down on the bench.
"Thanks," Retsuko said in gratitude.
He took a sip of Coffee and immediately spat it out on the grass beneath him.
Via's expression darkened as if she were disappointed in herself.
"Is it that bad?" She asked him.
Retsuko gave her an apologetic look and waved his hand no.
"No, no it's just- Did you accidentally use salt instead of sugar?" He asked.
Her face reddened in embarrassment and she looked at Vye, who edged backward bashfully.
"Braixen..." She said.
"I think I get it now," Retsuko said meekly.
He turned to his Pokemon, who had continued to train without him.
"Have you gotten any rest tonight?" He asked Via, who shook her head in response.
"You need sleep. Go get some rest, and I'll see you tomorrow." Retsuko told her.
Via gave him a pouty and frustrated look.
"I should be telling you that! You haven't gotten a proper shower or cleaned your hair in two weeks, and you look sleep deprived!" Via retorted.
She sighed.
"What are you all doing out here?" She asked Retsuko.
"Well... You know about Star Fest, right?"
"It's like... the biggest celebration in the world. Of course, I know about it."
Retsuko winced.
"I feel so stupid." He thought.
"We're part of the scheduled exhibition match and I'm planning on using Kaz here," Retsuko said, pointing to the small Buizel who had stopped training to come over and crawl up his back.
"You named him after Mama Kourada?" Via questioned.
"Her." Retsuko corrected. "And yeah. I took my sister's advice."
Via's eyes brightened.
"You talked to Bri?" She said gleefully.
"Just wait till you find out about Carmen..." Retsuko mumbled under his breath as he nodded.
"For real though, you should go to sleep." He reminded Via.
"No! If you're going to stay up and train then I'm going to stay up and help!" Via said, scolding Retsuko.
"Okay, Mom," Retsuko replied sarcastically.
Via rolled her eyes and then looked at Kaz confidently.
"Alright, then Kaz. Let's get started!"
Retsuko woke up on his own the next morning without any effort or extreme exhaustion.
Normally he would sleep for around 14 hours, only making exceptions for training and professional Pokemon league Champion activities, which took a toll on his already unhealthy conscience.
Retsuko sat up and looked around his room, taking a deep breath and placing his hand on his chest.
He felt lighter.
Happier.
Like the weight of being alone and holding the duties of the Champion on his own had been removed from him and he could finally be free to have fun with his friends.
Just like in Alola and Unova.
Retsuko sprung up out of bed, still surprised at how much energy he had despite the fact that he'd gone to sleep so late after training with Via and their Pokemon.
The image of Kaz on the rock in the lake popped into his mind and then when Kaz used the blade of water.
"Only five more days to go," Retsuko said, leaving his room.
He went into his bathroom and readjusted his hair so that he could slide in his hairclip and puffed up his spiky hair.
The hair that flopped down on the sides of his head left nothing to cover his forehead so Retsuko would occasionally wear a bandanna on his head to cover his lack of bangs.
As he finished grooming himself for the day, he heard a ring on the doorbell.
"Is that Kaz messing around with things?" Retsuko asked as he walked into the living room to answer it.
He was met with a flash of morning light which nearly blinded him, and he rushed into the bedroom to retrieve his glasses so that he could see.
"How am I awake so early?" Retsuko questioned.
The doorbell rang again violently and Retsuko dashed to it.
He tripped on Kyu, who was sleeping soundly on the ground in his Charizard Pajamas.
His body was sprawled around on the ground in an awkward position, and Retsuko slowly maneuvered around him without waking him up.
Kaz, who was up and about before anyone else, had completed her exploration of the apartment and was pawing at the door.
Retsuko shooed her away as kindly as he could and opened the door.
He was greeted by Carmen, who was already out and fully dressed at 6 AM.
The pair looked at each other awkwardly, and then Retsuko broke the silence.
"Hey, Carmen?" Retsuko greeted her.
"Hey!" Carmen replied with all the energy in the world.
"What brings you here?" Retsuko asked. "So damn early..?" He squeaked.
"I heard from Ki-Ki that Kyu and Via were in town and staying with you," Carmen said.
She peered into Retsuko's living room and saw Kyu sleeping peacefully, causing her to smile.
"He was right." She added.
"Oh, Yeah," Retsuko said.
Carmen switched her focus to him.
"Mhm?" She replied.
"Thanks for yesterday. I know it was my first time, but I hope I did it right and I hope it made you as happy as it made me." Retsuko thanked her.
Carmen looked toward Retsuko in disbelief and her face turned crimson.
"Don't say it in such a misleading way, eres tonto!" She said, slapping Retsuko right in his face.
Kyu turned over from his sleep and Retsuko heard a rustling from where Via had gone to sleep last night, causing Carmen to quiet down.
"Promise me to never speak of what had happened the night prior again, capiche?" Carmen said aggressively.
Retsuko nodded.
"It was... A mistake. We were confused so
no hard feelings." Retsuko replied.
Carmen's angry demeanor disappeared and was replaced with a happy and friendly one.
"Thanks. Seriously. Thank you." She said.
"You gonna come in or are you gonna stand there all day?" Retsuko asked.
"Oh, yeah," Carmen said.
She came into the living room and Kaz appeared out of nowhere, landing on Carmen's sunhat.
Carmen snatched her into her hands and looked at her.
"Ay, Dios Mío! She's soo cute!" Carmen said, hugging the small Buizel and carrying her around.
Via walked into the room with a mug of coffee and walked past the two of them.
"Hey, Retsuko." She greeted him tiredly as she walked by him.
Carmen's jaw dropped as she saw her, and she rushed over to hug Via tightly, lifting her with Kaz still in her hands.
Via was woken up completely by the jolt of the hug and her eyes widened upon noticing Carmen.
"Carmen!" Via squealed loudly.
She returned the hug and completely ignored Retsuko.
"Via, I haven't seen you in two years!" Carmen said, squeezing her tightly.
"I missed you so much," Via said.
Retsuko leaned against the doorframe, watching the interaction silently.
Kaz wrenched herself from in-between Carmen and Via and landed on the floor next to Retsuko.
"T-Training. Now." She said to him.
Retsuko shook his head in response.
"I'm so glad you're okay!" Carmen replied in relief, breaking the hug.
"I know I'm late to the news about the Plaza Attack. I know it doesn't travel quickly all the time but for some reason, people in the closest Region didn't know until it got leaked.." Carmen said.
"Asther." Retsuko mentally snarled. Kaz seemed to have heard his reaction and flinched.
"How bad have things been? You are the champion so I hope you know." Via asked.
Retsuko frowned.
He couldn't bring himself to tell them that because of his weakness, almost 3,000 people died. He couldn't tell them that he'd somehow turned into some sort of Pokehuman and fused with a Pokemon he'd never even met. He couldn't tell them about the Orakuru, the truth about Ascent, how Asther controlled literally everything around them but nobody but he and Kion seemed to realize.
He wanted to tell them.
But he couldn't.
Retsuko clenched his fist and out of nowhere, his body shook violently.
His eyes were shut tightly and he didn't even notice.
Kaz thumped her paw on the ground in impatience.
"Training, now." She repeated.
Retsuko's mind was focused on everything. Every single detail in the room. He felt like the room was getting smaller.
Smaller.
Smaller.
Like the walls were slowly moving in.
Retsuko clenched his chest through his shirt as his heart began to beat faster and faster.
His breathing rate increased, and he began to exhale faster than he could inhale.
The walls of the room got smaller and smaller.
"Training. Right. Now!" Kaz shouted.
Retsuko dropped to the floor on his knees as his breathing got faster and faster.
He was having a panic attack and hyperventilating quickly.
The random burst of twitches happened again.
Retsuko got another series of flashes, but the memories weren't his.
The images that ran through his mind were of a young Buizel, dancing and singing with her mother, living carefree and joyous lives.
Until it was interrupted.
Retsuko could feel Kaz's pain. Her frustration and feeling of inferiority to every one of Retsuko's other Pokemon.
It's like he was being attacked with a rush of Kaz's emotions.
He opened his eyes to see Carmen and Via standing over him, with Kaz worriedly tugging at his shirt by his side.
"Retsuko!"
"Retsuko, are you okay?!" Carmen and Via asked.
Retsuko's breathing returned to its normal rate and he regained his bearings.
"Retsuko!" Kyu said, snatching his hand.
He returned to his senses and looked at him.
Kyu had awakened and was behind him.
"Yo, You are clearly not alright," Kyu stated.
Retsuko's eyes widened as he looked at the palm of his left hand.
"No... Not again." He thought in fear.
"Was that some sort of panic attack? Retsuko, did something bad happen to you?" Carmen wondered out loud.
Her face was reddened and she was holding back tears as if she felt the blame for Retsuko's reaction.
"N-no. It's not that. Something else." Retsuko stuttered.
Kyu placed his hand on Carmen's shoulder.
"You and Via wouldn't really understand." He said.
Carmen lowered her head in defeat, and Kuu worriedly burst into the room along with Retsuko's other Pokemon as they crowded around him in concern.
"I'm fine, guys chill!" Retsuko said, overwhelmed by the sudden affection.
In the midst of everything, Retsuko's phone rang violently on the desk in his room.
He pushed his way out of the embrace of his friends and Pokemon and ran to his room to pick it up, stumbling on his feet.
"Hello, Kion?" Retsuko asked.
Kion, who had spent the night at the I.P.F. headquarters with Asther, was now up and about.
"Retsuko. Get to the League Hall ASAP. There's something important you need to know." He said.
"Y-Yeah." Retsuko responded with a breath.
He walked into his living room to find everyone looking at him in concern.
He wiped the sweat from his panic attack off of his face and put on his hoodie, which he had taken from the room.
"I told you all, I'm fine. I'm needed at the Pokemon League, so just hold up the fort while I'm gone." Retsuko explained.
He took out all of his Pokémon's Pokeballs and Returned them.
Kuu refused to accept the beam of red light that carried him into the device, hooting overprotectively and jumping to Retsuko's side.
Kaz did a similar motion, and Retsuko took a deep breath.
He looked over to Carmen, Via, and Kyu.
"Don't do or make anything stupid while I'm gone! " Retsuko said, running out of the doors and leaping from the balcony.
Kyu and Via ran out after him and saw that he had landed on Kuu, and was riding on his back with Kaz.
Kyu leaned back on the porch frame.
"I need a drink. You guys want anything?"
2027 - Unova, Star City League Hall
Retsuko rushed to the Pokemon League Hall and made his way inside.
Scrambling through the many People going through the building, he made his way to Asther's office and found her and Kion there waiting.
"What happened?" He asked between panting.
"You're in luck," Asther said smugly.
Kion's eyebrows furrowed.
"The last of the remaining previous generation of Gijinka has requested to become your teacher. Seems like you have a fan."
Asther passed Retsuko a printed copy of the scroll she was sent and he opened and read it.
Retsuko had done his best to mentally avoid the fact that he was a Gijinka and the Burst phenomenon as a whole, but he'd never considered thinking about the other legendary Pokemon Gijinka and who they could be.
Before Retsuko could ask anything, Asther spoke again.
"Interestingly enough, he's also requested to meet your friends. Kyu Yeonghon of Kanto and Olivia Fluerprin." She added.
"Why?" Retsuko and Kion both asked.
"Everyone who was exposed to the Oracle that day has a chance of becoming a Gijinka. It reacted to Retsuko as we can see clearly, but all four of you were there."
"What about Kion?" Retsuko asked.
"He... declined," Asther said, glancing at Kion who gave her a scowl.
"Where is this guy? And what is he gonna be teaching me? And also, why am I just now finding out about this Star Fest thing?!" Retsuko interrogated.
"One at a time. The teacher is located in the Sinnoh Region at a temple on Mt. Cornet. It's a secluded area and only a select group of people know about it and can travel there freely. For their safety." Asther said.
"I'd say that this teacher is going to help you learn how to control your Burst. I'm guessing Asther wants to use you as a weapon for Unova." Kion said.
"On the contrary." Asther rejected Kion's statement.
"A defense against the threat of the Orakuru and their abilities is needed. Retsuko is our only method of defense."
Retsuko paused for a moment to think.
"I'll think about it." He answered.
"Retsuko, I don't advise you to do this," Kion warned.
"I know. I don't want to either, but if this can help me learn how to use my new powers and protect Unova then I don't really have a choice as the Champion." Retsuko said, balling his hand into a fist.
"That being said, the teacher gave you one condition. You must teach that Buizel of yours a new move before you undergo any training, and then show that move off during the Star Fest Exhibition." Asther said.
Retsuko's eyes widened in confusion.
"Is that what the point of having Star Fest early was?" Kion questioned.
"That... And since our nation was attacked in its heart by a terrorist group that threatens the very fabric of Unova; I felt that the citizens needed a display of the power of our top trainers to show that they are protected."
She walked over to the window, not looking at either of the boys.
"I am... Concerned about the people of this nation. They are all likely terrified to even leave their homes, and the once busy streets of star City are barren."
"So that's why you brought Carmen and Gill into this?! To appeal to the crowd?! To show off your damn connections?!" Kion questioned angrily.
"Precisely. People from Nuvema to Humilau will be there. All ages, races, genders, and regions will come together in support of Unova. The Gijinka Teacher will only train Retsuko if he provides him with ample entertainment through his showcase of strength." Asther explained.
"She predicted everything. She probably already knows about Kaz and how we've been training. She was the one that suppressed communication about the attack until Star Fest was announced. Does she know about Via's flame? Or Kyu's true condition? I can't tell her anything." Retsuko thought.
"You have five days before his next message will come after Star Fest. You best get to work." Asther advised.
She walked off and Kion left behind her.
Retsuko stood in place, frozen by the new news.
"No pressure, Right?"
Kion followed Asther into the Hall and she stopped walking.
"Why didn't you tell Retsuko the full truth that you told me?!" Kion demanded.
"I haven't a clue what you're talking about." Asther Replied.
"About the 8 Oracle Fragments. About how the I.P.F. are looking for them along with the Orakuru. And about how you've been using clubs and bars throughout Star City and the Illegal Rare candy scam to fund events." Kion said.
"Because you took the liberty of investigation and finding out on your own," Asther answered.
"Fine then. I'll tell him on my own-" Kion said but was stopped by a Leaf Blade attack from Asther's Serperior narrowly missing his face and slicing off one of his locs.
"You will not be telling Retsuko anything. If you even try, I will prevent you with the force of the entire Unova Government.
"Where did you put Khan," Kion growled.
Asther tossed him a keycard.
"Cell 06. I had to take the proper precautions so that you wouldn't attack me out of anger." Asther said.
Asther walked off, and Kion sank down in defeat.
"How can someone like her have so much power over everyone..?" He questioned.
He heard a doorframe slam and turned around to find Saabrina who had listened to the entire conversation hiding behind him.
He couldn't make out her face but saw the outline of her body behind the door.
"Hey, you!" Kion called to her, but Saabrina ran off back to her post.
Though slower, Saabrina knew the building better than Kion and eventually lost him.
She walked into her med room and found Retsuko there waiting for her with Kuu.
"Retsuko!" Saabrina said, semi startled by his sudden visit.
"Can we talk?" Retsuko asked her.
Saabrina lowered her brow. "About what?"
Retsuko sighed and sat on the medical bed next to him.
"For the past 4 months, I've been having dreams." Retsuko paused. "Nightmares." He corrected.
Saabrina looked at Retsuko intensely.
"Have you been showing symptoms again? God, why didn't you tell me sooner!" She said, rushing over to Retsuko.
He pushed her away slightly.
"No. It's not that." He said.
Saabrina backed up. "And your other... conditions?"
"I haven't had any episodes recently and my OCD is fine," Retsuko answered.
"And these dreams? What's been happening in them?" Saabrina asked again.
Retsuko turned away from her.
"They were of Kaz. The Buizel." Retsuko explained.
"So you did take my advice and name her. After Grandma?" Saabrina wondered.
Retsuko didn't answer her.
"Saabrina, what does this mean? Does this have anything to do with me being a Gijinka? What's going on."
Saabrina's lip quivered slightly. She wanted desperately to help Retsuko figure this out but she herself had no idea how his conditions affected his Gijinka abilities. Neither of them had even known what a Gijinka was a month prior.
Based on Saabrina's facial expression, Retsuko knew what her answer was.
"Alright." He said weakly.
Kuu remained silent through the exchange. Out of everyone around him, he was by far the most worried. Being the champion, among other things, was always mentally taxing for Retsuko but he'd always found confinement in Kuu. Retsuko did seem happier when his friends had returned but there was still lingering fear and helplessness caused by the attack.
Kuu could feel how Retsuko felt.
"I heard that you'll be battling with Buizel during the Plaza match. Maybe getting to know her through training will help you understand better?" Saabrina suggested.
"Maybe." Retsuko said as he fidgeted with the drawstrings on his hoodie.
"Speaking of the Gijinka thing… Do you even know how to turn on the burst? Or how the power transfer works? Or how does a male human fusing with a female Buizel function? Or-" Saabrina trailed, but Retsuko stood up and she stopped talking.
"I don't know." He said coldly.
Saabrina sighed, recognizing that she'd overwhelmed him.
"Course you don't. Shit, I don't even know where to begin trying to understand. This must be so difficult for you." Saabrina said apologetically.
"Retsuko. With everything going on, don't you think now would be a good time to tell your friends the truth? About your disorders I mean-" Saabrina suggested.
Retsuko didn't respond.
"I've known Via for eight years. Mom took her in and she was like a sister to me. Not even she knows." He said finally.
"It's your decision," Saabrina replied.
"Music still suppresses the symptoms for me, so I'll just listen to that more," Retsuko said.
He made his way to the door with Kuu.
"I have to train for the Festival. Take care, sis." He said as the two of them left the room.
"I seriously hate Mondays," Retsuko said to himself.
Saabrina looked at the Calendar in the office and lost herself in thought.
She smiled slightly as a bright idea popped into her head.
"Star fest, huh?"
Saabrina has a plan? Could it be in relation to what she heard from Asther and Jackson? Retsuko and Kaz have a week to train for the exhibition match, and if Kaz doesn't learn that mystery move, then their chances of learning how to use the Burst are over.
Time for the Pokemon Re: Dux trivia/ fun facts!
For starters, I originally planned for Retsuko and Jackson to have some type of aura or battle bond power but decided against it, and when Hisuian Variants of Decidueye and Samurott got announced, I used that. I find the coincidence really funny.
As for how the two of them gained the ability, that's going to be explained in a later chapter.
Retsuko is the youngest of the main characters so (excluding Naoki), being 15 and born on December 25th of 2012.
Gill is the oldest yet shortest out of the main characters being 16, and born in June of 2010, with Via being in second place and born in August of the same year.
Madame Asther is related to an official Pokemon character, but who that person is is unknown.
