Chapter 18
Facing the storm
Week 4: Day 28
(Johnathan's POV)
Several minutes later
"Come on, this way!" I yelled directing my friends and family down the halls. Rhode Island was beside me firing a few controlled burst down the halls. Rosa and Rojo were carrying a semi conscious Cole and frightened Elaia on their backs, and Cole seemed to be mumbling about missing an arm, but he seemed to be in one piece to me. And Rojo was hobbling thanks to his cast. Weiss earned a new scar down her other eye for not listening to my warning, trying to fight something she can not win against, and was lucky it missed its original target. Had I not showed up, she wouldn't be here to kick my ass later. Fencing techniques don't work too well when you're opponent had shields and plasma weaponry, best way to beat those guys with a sword is with samurai warrior like techniques. Velvet was beside Elaia trying to keep her calm. All of us were heading to a special armory for something with a bigger and I mean a lot bigger punch for close quarters combat like this. We need bigger guns to even stand a chance against these guys.
I should have known this would happen. Every time something good happens in my life, my luck decides to screw with me and throw me something horrible. Not even moments after Serena, Cole, and Elaia fall on me from a portal, all hell broke loose when a few Elites jumped out to kill them and me. Not just any Elites, ones specifically train to kill Freelancers and Spartan III groups. What's next, Blake is part cat? Wouldn't be surprised if she was, would explain a lot really.
All the doors and windows were locked down and sealed shut with really tough Aura infused metal shutters. Think Ozpin installed that a bit after I first arrived. Don't know who activated it and I don't care. As long as people stay in their rooms and don't try screwing with these things, they'll live a lot longer. Only reason RWBY and JNPR were out was because a few of them were spying on me and Velvet during our time in town. Apparently Yang and Nora made bets on when me and Velvet would get together. Others went along to be sure they didn't destroy the city.
I wasn't in the best of shape to be fighting, but I don't want anyone dying on my watch, me and Rhode are the only ones trained and equipped to deal with these guys. Several of my stitches already busted open and were bleeding, multiple plasma burns on my armor and helmet, I overall felt like I was going to die. I had to muscle my way through this, rest is for when we no longer are in danger of dying. Why didn't I leave in the shields, or at least some of them?
We stopped down the hall toward the elevator door to Ozpin's office, the armory is in the basement under his office tower. Perfect place to put a few hyper advanced weapons. Go here all the time to try and repair my railgun, guess having the power of a miniature MAC cannon classifies, in Goodwitch's words, 'extremely dangerous to be repaired in the school forge' and 'Too much of a liability to be in my hands'. I modified, repaired, rebuild it from a completely shattered everything only missing the power supply, and trained my ass off just to use the damn thing. I want to make a crater or explode something organic with it, I'm going to blow shit up till Yang actually tells a funny joke or when Goodwitch develops a sense of humor. Whichever one comes first.
I pushed the elevator button and looked back at them.
"Everyone alright?" I asked. A collection of groans and a short headcount was all I needed.
"Elevator is coming down. Rhode and Nora, keep an eye on the southern flank. Blake and Yang, you got the eastern. Ren and Ruby, you get northern. Jaune, you and Serena cover the raptors and their cargo. Velvet, you and Weiss throw up a shield if the situation demands it. Anything even twitches funny in any direction, light 'em up with everything you got. Don't hold back. Mu, get online now."I ordered stepping up to the plate of leadership. No one really questioned me and did as they are told. I need to work fast, won't be long before the Elites find something to kill. I kept my energy swords in hand ready to ignite.
"How can I be of assistance Agent Ohio?" Mu responded appearing on my shoulder. Man do I miss having this little voice on my shoulder. Shots fired from the northern end, I turn to see smoking holes in the wall heading outside with Ruby and Ren's barrels smoking.
"We saw the wall move and acted." She explained. Well I did tell them to shoot anything that twitches. At least this way the Elites know that if they go down that corridor they will walk right into a firing squad, sort of. Makes it harder for them, that's what matters now.
"Anyway, hack the school's mainframe and do everything you can to stall them. Don't care what you do, just keep them busy." I ordered. She nodded and flashed herself into the nearest computer system. Good thing about her being alpha's humanity and mercy, she'll do anything and everything in her power to save innocents. In terms of combat, she tried to talk me into not killing the enemy when they haven't done anything to deserve it. Works half the time, other half is when I am in a rage fit.
"Where are we going?" Elaia asked.
"Somewhere to keep you safe, very safe." I replied biting my tongue at the end. Small ding and the door behind us opened. "Raptors go in first. Rhode I need you to go in with them to keep things under control down there." I ordered stepping inside for a bit to push the bottom button before stepping out. Elevator can't support all of us at the same time, going to have go down in separate groups. I'll go last, I weight the most by a lot.
(Velvet's POV)
Few minutes later down below Beacon
"Everyone down here? Everyone alright?" Johnathan asked exiting the elevator exhausted with multiple areas on him bleeding. The room we were in was amazing. Heavy duty weapon lockers lined the walls, several have the Promethean weapons glowing inside. Poor Ruby was in hell because she can't touch them. Something about being able to disintegrate whatever was on the other end and having sensitive triggers. Dust and Aura infused concrete surrounded us, looks like it can take a whole lot of punishment. Glowing crystals were infused in the ceiling, light the place up nicely.
"Everyone is here and accounted for." I replied. I was currently petting Elaia's head softly to keep her calm. Turns out it works a lot better then I thought. Apparently Blake or Johnathan's advice works. Poor girl has had a rough day. I admit she looks adorable. Her whiskers and fur tickled me as her head moved around.
Yang and Nora were trying to get one of the lockers open. With how strong the lockers look, they are going to be at it for a while. Weiss was getting bandaged up by Rhody, those red swords left a nasty mark on her other eye. Blake was holding Weiss down as Rhody worked. Ren and Pyrrha looked ready to go back out there. Jaune was trying to trying to open the locker by guessing the combination. Johnathan's sister was sitting on her helmet while digging her her backpack, no idea what she hopes to find. Rosa and Rojo were off to the side licking their wounds, they got pretty hurt out there. Doubt they'll survive it again. The other guy was off the floor unconscious. Don't know his name.
"Are we going to be okay down here daddy?" She asked. Feels a bit weird having someone call Johnathan 'daddy'. I don't question it. He'll tell me her story when he's ready. I am curious how a adorable kitten like her got put in his care.
"Don't worry, you'll be safe here. I trust Velvet will keep you safe." He informed kissing the top of her head. "Have you been a good girl for Serena and Mu while I was gone?"
"Yes daddy. I did my schoolwork, Mu taught me about Mara and her teachings yesterday. I got A on her test." She proudly stated smiling brightly.
"Very good. You'll get some ice cream when it's safe for you to go up." He promised picking her up and hugging her. "I missed you Elaia."
"Miss you too daddy." She replied kissing his forehead. He smiled as he put her down. She ran off toward Ruby for who knows what reason.
"I got her out of a burning city where her trade caravan set up shop. Her mother and father were killed in front of her by a dragon. Took her to the wild to calm her down and take care of her on my way to Whiterun, a stronghold where she's from. Think her mind blocked off certain memories after such a traumatic experience. She started calling me daddy after that. I grown use to it and adopted her as my daughter legally." He explained. "To be honest with you, I have no freaking clue what I am doing. Just copying what Dad did with me and Serena growing up. Biggest difference is she has a raptor for a pet instead of a stinky ferret." I smiled a her and Ruby started talking. She seems very friendly, just meet Ruby today and already she's trying to make friends with her. Two would go together like peas in a pod. "She's very friendly, rarely gets in trouble or thrown any tantrums. Just beware when she does. Trust me, that is a can of worm you do not want to open." He warned.
"You're doing a good job. You know that right?" I praised. "She's a good kid. You're raising her well." I know I wasn't a perfect angel when I was six. Tried a few dust spells mom taught me in the house and well, the living room got redecorated a nice burnt color with a hint of ice and lightning on the trim. Got grounded for a month and my dust kit took away for a year.
"I know, just wish I can give her more. She's been begging me to bring her a new mommy for the past year. Someone to make me happier and to play with her when I'm not around." He explained running his hand through his hair.
"Velvet I'm not going to lie to you, the odds are heavily against us. We're outnumbered, out gunned, and outmatched. Me and Rhode are the only ones with the armor able to stand a chance against them, even then I don't see everyone coming out of it alive." He whispered as he handed me something cold as he walked over to one of the lockers throwing his helmet on.
I look in my hands to see a pair of dog tags in my hands. Why would he give me a pair of dog tags? I look closer to see it was his tags. What is that crazy man planning?
(Johnathan's POV)
I really hope my plan works. I opened the locker and pulled out the scattershot. I started loading it the ionized particle shells. I can't bring myself to tell anyone my plan. They'll never let me go through with it.
"Here, you're going to need this real soon." Serena said handing me a small battery looking pack. I knew exactly what it was, my fission pack. Thank whatever is in control of this world. I turned around and her her do her thing. Thank god this is modified so the pack is removable and interchangeable in case of damage. Damn this suit is heavily modified, any more and I'll void the repair agreement. "So, who is the bunny girl I seen you with? Spill everything that happened after I lost contact with you."
"You remember when I said I found a local trying to hide from me?" I replied. "Well she is the same one, her name is Velvet Scarlatina. I defended her against the Prometheans, got knocked out trying. Woke up two days after that to her holding my helmet, meet her friends a bit, spent the night at their dorm because I had nowhere else to go. Headmaster here let me learn here, Rhode crashed in next day, got her accepted here as well. T-rex rampaged through downtown, spent a few hours in the Jurassic park universe with her, saved her from a troodon bite. Raptors showed up and completely turned my week around. Spent a month learning about this place and getting accustom to it. Went on a trip that nearly killed me. She took me around town to learn more about each other today. Then you guys showed up. That is the short version." I explained as she handed me the fission packs cover.
"So I assume you two are close." She asked.
"Pretty close, she helped me when I needed it most, I defended her when she was in trouble. I will admit to breaking a couple assholes arms. Laid down a 'don't mess with my friends' law around here." I replied as she took the cover from me.
"What am I going to do with you Johnathan. We both know where this is leading, we both know it will never work out in the end." She reminded as I felt a surge of energy. My HUD sprung to life, all the systems online, everything is as it should. "Fission pack is in. try not to break this one, Okay."
"I know Serena. I know it will never work out in the end." I replied softly taking a few steps forward. Everything was alright, nothing broken yet. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I look back to see Serena giving me an apologetically look.
"I know its tough for you to not make attachments after being on your own for so long. I know it is not easy for you to let go, but sometimes it is for the better to let her go. Spare her the pain for when we need to leave." She informed looking over at Velvet, who was pondering over my tags. I seriously hope this plan works.
"I just wish I can stop this never ending curse. To be happy for longer than a few week. " I said to myself pulling out a Light rifle.
"I know little brother, I know." She softly said walking away. I let out a deep sigh as I reloaded the forerunner gun and took a extra mag. This was all I'll need to complete my mission. I closed the locker shut and headed toward the elevator. What I need to do next, I can't ask them to help with. Someone can get killed very easily.
"Hey Johnny, where you going?" Nora asked.
"Something I got to do." I replied pushing the elevator button for it to open.
"Wait a minute Ohio! You're not going out there again, not alone!" Rhode yelled running to me.
"Yeah, we want to help." Nora said looking ready to kick butt.
"Not up for discussion." I dryly replied stepping into the elevator. It started to close fast but Rhode pushed the door back open and looked at me furious.
"You're not going alone. We're all in this together." She stated trying to get in with me. I held her back.
"Not your call to make." I replied pushing her out and slamming my hand on the up button. The armory went into madness as the door closed quickly. I had to do this alone. I can not risk their lives for my past actions. This is my fight, I started it, I need to fix it. I can't have them die fixing my problem.
"Johnathan Ian Grey, what the hell are you doing?!" Serena yelled at me through the comms.
"I have to do this Serena. There is no other way, none where you all would survive." I replied feeling a tear roll down my cheek.
"What are you talking abou..."
"I had Mu do a few calculations. Every scenario, she said at least one of us will die. I rather it be me then anyone I care about." I replied keeping the scattershot out. "You take care of Elaia for me, don't teach her nothing I wouldn't. If Yang, the female blonde one, corrupts her in any way, I'm coming back from beyond the grave to haunt her butt. Rhode, you got custody over the raptors. Treat them well, keep them safe."
"Johnathan don't do this. They are way beyond your level, you can't take them all." Serena warned.
"Elaia if you're listening, I want you to listen to everyone down there, they'll keep you safe. Velvet I might not get another chance to tell you this, but I lo..." the elevator shook violently. I got nothing but static from their end. I took a deep breath as I pumped the forerunner shotgun and chambered in a shell. Today is a good day to die, and there is no better way I would want to go out then protecting my friends and family.
"Monty protect them." I softly prayed.

I wouldn't call it magic but I do my best. sorry about the wait everyone, my pc died and I had to email people on my ps4, I finished betaing this on my neighbor's computer, and from what I hear about next chapter, you should be ready for a long and epic time people cause next chapter will be a monster in more ways than one!
