"Come on Harry!" James shouted over the crowd as he opened the door for the bookstore. He couldn't believe that they had forgotten to get one of Harry's books for class this close to the school year. Albeit the book was for Herbology but neither the less it was something he was sure that Lily would snap at him for doing this.
"Got it Dad." Harry slid in under his father's arm and into the bookstore.
"Alright go to the main desk and let them know… I'm going to look around there for a book I was interested in." With a nod Harry skidded off from his dad up to the main desk and placed his hands at his side briefly as he waited for a worker who walked over and smiled at the young boy. "Hi! I'm looking for a first year's book for Herbology."
"Ah, I thought I remembered you. Harry, right?" The man asked before receiving a nod. He smiled. "Let me go look in the back, I think I should still have one." And he walked to the back as Harry stood and looked around. He didn't know how long he was standing there before he heard a voice so soft it surprised him.
"Excuse me?" He turned and his eyes widened. There stood her brown bushy hair that ran around her head almost like a mane. His eyes locked on the brown of hers as he took all of her in he had forgotten that she had asked him something.
"I'm sorry, can you repeat that?" Harry shook his head.
"Oh it is alright!" She smiled and looked at him for a moment. "I was just wondering if you knew where I could find these books… it's like the adults are too busy around here." Harry took her list and looked at it for a moment then to the pile of books she had beside her.
"It seems you're just missing the same one as me. For Herbology. I think the clerk that was helping me should be back soon." Harry smiled at her.
"Oh thank god.' She sighed happily. "I was going mad looking everywhere for it." She grinned as she looked at him. "My name is Hermione Granger."
"I'm Harry. Harry Potter." Her eyes widened and her eyes lifted up from his own to his forehead causing him to subconsciously lift his hand and recover the scar on his head.
"Oh I'm sorry." She looked down briefly out of respect.
"No it's alright just….don't like it when people focus on it too much."
"I don't blame you…. I'd be the same if what happened to you happened to me."
They smiled at the other with understanding before a cough was heard and they turned to see the clerk. The clerk held up the book.
"Found it."
"Oh thank you!" Harry grinned before he looked at Hermione. "Could you see if you had a second one?"
The clerk smiled and nodded, heading to the back before shortly returning with the second one handing it to the young girl.
"Thanks!" She turned and looked at Harry. "Thanks for asking him…" She smiled shyly.
"It's no problem." He smiled back shyly.
"Hermione? Hermione? Oh there you are." A woman walked over with a big man who stopped upon seeing both Hermione and Harry. "Ah I see you found your book, and who's this?" The woman asked softly.
"Oh Mum, this is Harry." Hermione answered. "I'm guessing you're going to Hogwarts as well this year?" Harry nodded happily.
"Everyone in my family has for as long as we can find." He looked at the parents before seeing bracelets on their wrists. "Oh! You're a muggleborn."
Hermione shifted in her step slightly. "Yes, a teacher from Hogwarts came and she told us everything about it." Her father answered. "To be honest we thought she was pulling the wool over our eyes until she transformed into a cat."
"Oh Auntie Minnie." That caused a weird look from all three of them. "Uh, my family is very close to Professor McGonagall." Harry blushed slightly, rubbing the back of his head.
"Well yes Professor McGonagall did tell us about the world and we are slowly coming to understand it. And everything."
"Oh…then I guess that you know about how some people think that's a bad thing." Harry said shyly. "But my family and alot of my friends don't believe that." He reaffirmed, shaking his head. "Dad says my mom was a muggleborn as well."
"I don't think that's kind though calling them that." Hermione screwed her face up in disgust. "I think they should simply be referred to as a first generation witch."
"Oh boy, now someone sounds like old Arcturus." A voice said as a man with a metal mask and a cane walked over. "Forgive my manners. My name is James Fleamont Potter." He offered his hand out to the parents first.
"Jane Granger."
"Daniel Granger. And this is Hermione." The father introduced the young girl.
"Ah so this is the one I heard saying the same thing as Arcturus." James kneeled down to look at her holding his cane. "Please forgive my face…"
Hermione turned her head to the side examining her before she reached her hand up and gently touched it. "You're like Harry…" Her voice was soft and full of care, something that caused a swift flashback of a similar girl but with red hair. "With a good heart… that people need to focus on." She smiled. And leaned forward pecking his cheek before going back to her parents who were smiling at her and picking up her books.
"Well we better get going." Her parents smiled before James shook his head coming back to his senses. He reached in his pocket and pulled out an address and phone number.
"My…my loving wife before she passed demanded that no matter what house we lived in we had a phone so I made sure to add one to my ancestral home. You can call me if you have any questions. I can help you. And the address is for letters. I'm sure before they go to school Harry would love to keep in contact before school."
"Thank you Mr. Potter-"
"Please….My name is James. I'm not that old yet."
"That's not what Ameli- Ow!" Harry joked before James gently tapped his son in the leg with his cane causing the five to start laughing together before the Grangers left.
"So…"
"Nope, don't start dad."
"I'm just saying if it's what I-"
"Lalalalalala I'm not listening." Harry handed the clerk the money and headed out himself with his father laughing in tow.
Arcturus gripped the side of his bed and forced himself up to a sitting position with the cane by his side. Five years moved by so swiftly and it was becoming clear to the aged man that he would not live too much longer. He could only hope that Sirius was ready for the responsibilities of being the Head of the House.
He knew after his death Lucius would seek out an attempt of gaining the power but with his will and heir clearly defined he had fully stopped that. He worried however, would Lucius' reaction cause harm to not only Narcissa but even his son? Although the child was clearly Lucius, he clearly only cared for himself over them all. Even more so the Lady Black in Amelia. He closed his eyes and hoped. He hoped as he had these past long five years.
He sighed slowly before walking out of his room and to his study where he slowly sat himself down in a desk and activated a self writing quill and took in his breath.
"To whoever finds this letter, thank you. It is not a happy thought to die and not be found so to know my worth is known is something that will guide me to the light with hope. It is this hope that shall lead me to Melania…I miss her so and pray that I have made up for my mistakes of the past with these past years.
I wish I could be here to watch how the House of Black grows and truly becomes over these next several years. But I know it will live. But before I go I wish a few passing notes. These are things I should have said sooner but with age comes not only wisdom but also hindsight.
To the infamous Black Sisters. Your strength will always be your unity. You three must always be there for each other. As Trixie and Andromeda have shown. It is the truest form of our family. Guide each other to new levels and aid Sirius in his goals for our family.
Sirius, your father never wished for your banishment by the hands of Walburga and you must forgive me for letting it occur. If I had not been so lost in my own grief than perhaps I would have noticed the kind of woman she was and how it would affect you. Forgive your grandfather. And if you do honor my wishes. Make our family strong again. Let the name of Black once again mean something to any who hear it.
Thank you and be strong, my family.
Arcturus Sirius Black The Third"
The paper was slowly put down as a hand went and cupped the face of the old man.
"Goodbye grandfather." Sirius whispered as he closed his eyes and lifted the man to lay in his bed and the sheet pulled over his body. He stood and proceeded to begin alerting the family of a great loss to the Ancient and Most Noble House of Black.
No leads. In the 5 years since both conclusions, that the Silver Dementor was still out of prison, and that Voldemort had returned, and still nothing concrete had come to fruition. It was maddening for Amelia as she sat in her office and rubbed her aching brow. Folders scrawled across her desk as she had continued looking over them once more.
"Damn it." She muttered in contemplation before biting her lip. Was she perhaps grasping at straws? Were these conclusions just made up in her mind trying to still figure out the horrors that plagued her career and world only a decade ago now?
No, Or at least she told herself no. This was the least of her headache though. On her table was a list of people from this coming year who were interested in becoming an Auror after this year of Hogwarts. One name drew her concern. Nymphadora Tonks. Young Dora has surprisingly done very well in her OWLs and if she did as well in her NEWTs then she would be a shoo in for the Auror Academy and in doing so a rising Auror in no time… However, her mother's opinion on this was another thing entirely.
She can still recall the argument the past several years between both Andromeda and Tonks, as Nymphadora has preferred being called only allowing Harry to call her Dora, It was actually quite awkward when they occurred. And what's worse is how much Andromeda would look to Amelia and Sirius to try and convince Tonks out of it. They were however, the worst to attempt this goal as both their lives have been for the most part better with being a member of the Aurors. It was such a shame when Sirius decided to leave it telling her that his duties as the Head of the Family would cause too many conflicts but she made sure to give him a hitwizard's license just to be safe and trusting that it would be needed.
She sighed and sat the paper down and contemplated. Perhaps partnering her to learn under Shacklebolt would be the best way to ensure her safety and preparations. Afterall Amelia was assured that she could not prevent Tonk's application and if her scores are good enough then she couldn't deny her access. But that was still a year away to be seen as a possibility.
This however was better thought of at a later date. The letter she had just received from Sirius brought great concern. If Arcturus had passed then her place wasn't in this office. She sent a missive to her secretary that she would have to leave early before rising to her fireplace, throwing floo in.
"Looks like it's time for a family meeting."
When she arrived the very first thing she did was as true as everything. She embraced her husband. The comfort he sought in her made it well known how much this loss affected Sirius. Although they probably grew distant from his time away from the family he nevertheless cared deeply for his grandfather. It wasn't too much longer but eventually the entirety of the family met and discussed what was to happen. Agreement was made that the funeral would be quite soon and before the children left for Hogwarts once again so all members of the magical community could be present for it to honor the man.
