Chapter 6: Final Message

Year: X752. 32 years till Canon begins.

No POV:

As Commander Hugo revealed the horrible truth of what happened to Cobalt, Cade's eyes filled with tears as ran back into the manor and up into his room, the rest of the guests shocked at what they had just heard. With June ordering everyone back into the house as she too began to cry.

Gildarts and Lilly were also upset at the news of Cobalt's passing as they both knew him as a kind man, but the former knew him as a teacher and a good friend at Fairy Tail.

Master Makarov was especially distraught and emotional at hearing the news of one of his guild mates dying on a quest. It didn't help that the Makarov saw all his guild members as his own children. He too made his way back inside with Commander Hugo following them.

Upon entering the house June ordered all the guests to stay in the lounge, while she would go upstairs to try and comfort her son. During this Master Makarov and Commander Hugo entered the library after getting permission from June, so that Hugo could explain the tragedy that day.

He first explained the details of the break in, then talked about Cobalt arriving to help. Next he talked about the travel to the mountains and how they stopped to set up camp for a few hours. After that he mentioned Cobalt running off to investigate the magical spike and how not to long later, he and his men were attacked by an explosion wielding maniac with him being the only survivor.

Upon mentioning that he then saw Cobalt returning not long later with a severed arm, Makarov was especially furious, with Hugo feeling the raw magic energy emanating from him. He then said that the last thing Cobalt did was give him three of the missing magic items and important information about their enemies, before heading off to stop the ritual. Hugo then explained that he felt like he saw a dark presence pass over the bushes in which he hid himself in, before then feeling the ground shake.

Hugo explained that after fearing that the worst had happened to Cobalt, he waited for his wounds to heal before making a dash for Crocus, but not before carefully returning to the campsite just to see of Cobalt was ok. Upon being disappointed to not find his body, but rather a huge crater, he then gathered the now drained magic items at the campsite and Cobalt's rucksack that was left there.

Upon reaching Crocus he immediately ran for the King's castle to explain the situation. When he did so the Knights returned to the campsite to find more information, but found nothing. The Magic Council labelled the quest as a failure as the criminals had ultimately succeeded in the plans they had for the items.

Hugo later went to the Royal Museum to hand back the stolen items, Yakone was horrified upon learning what had happened to Cobalt and that the items were now useless in terms of marketing potential. Hugo then journeyed to Magnolia to inform the Fairy Tail Guild and Cobalt's family. He just didn't know it would be on his son's birthday.

Makarov had remained silent during the whole time Hugo was talking, his fist clenching upon learning what had happened to Cobalt during the quest. "So… that's what happened you say?" He spoke calmly having stood up from his chair and facing away from Hugo.

"Yes… I'm sorry for the loss you feel, I just wish there was more I could have done." Hugo gritted his teeth while looking to the ground in shame.

"You did all you could. But I just need you to answer one question for me Commander."

Makarov turned to look at Hugo who had raised his head to see that Makarov's eye pupils were gone and now being replaced with a blinding white colour. A powerful magic aura was emanating from him, which terrified Hugo as he had never seen a Wizard Saint get this angry before.

"Where is the Tartaros Guild located?" Makarov demanded, with complete calmness and furry of anger in that question. His face had veins bulging out, with a terrifying expression that could kill just by looking at it. The only reason Makarov was not yelling down the manor at this point, was due to the fact that he didn't want to scare any of the guests and children here.

"I-I don't know! Or I m-mean… the Magic Council doesn't know!" Hugo replied petrified at the man he saw before him. "Tartaros is a Dark Guild that we have only just heard of, so the Magic Council can't locate them-"

"DO THOSE FOOLS EVER TRY TO ACTUALLY STOP THE DARK GUILDS FROM CAUSING THIS SORT OF TRAGEDY TO HAPPEN!" Makarov yelled, as he snapped finally loosing his composure. His magic aura erupted from him even more, with the veins on his forehead pulsing as he clenched in fists in anger. However he was interrupted from continuing this talk, by Charles who had rushed into the room.

"Master Makarov please try to calm down! You are scaring everyone right now!" Charles pleaded desperately trying to defuse Makarov's anger. Upon hearing that he was scaring everyone which included Gildarts and the girl Lilly, Makarov began to calm himself down with the magic aura eminently from him shrinking. The colour returned to his eyes as he breathed again.

"I… I'm sorry for that outburst just there… To you and the others in this building… I just lost myself in my anger for a moment. Please forgive me." Makarov apologised at Charles, who in turn nodded his head in thanks before leaving and closing the door behind him.

"I am sorry about that Commander… I've just… never lost a guild member on a mission before. I didn't think it would feel this painful inside of me." Makarov explained his voice now choking with sadness, now that his anger had died away.

"Do… you need a minute? There is one more thing I have to show to you." Hugo said looking at Makarov with an understanding expression.

"I'm fine Commander… What is this thing you wished to show me?" Makarov asked, as was successful in holding back the tears that tried to exit his eyes. He then was able to calm the broken tone in his voice.

"I believe Cobalt said that you had an interest in this item. Am I correct in saying that?" Hugo asked as he reached into Cobalt's rucksack and pulled out an old leather tome with a buckle on the front cover keeping it shut tight. The words on the front were barley intelligible. Makarov's eyes widened in shock as he knew what this was.

"But that's…! That's the Translating Tome that helps unlock Malvel Nickolas ancient spell book!" Makarov whispered with shock. "But wait… how did you get this? I thought that the quest had to be completed to receive the item from the museum?" Makarov questioned as he scratched his moustache in a new found curiosity.

"Well the Magic Council was kind enough to me, as I had reported all this new information to them, that they were willing to grant me a favour. That favour was to get that book from the museum as it was the gift Cobalt planned to get his son I believe." Hugo said, as he recalled the details. "Wanted to fulfil the man's last wishes."

"Thank you for doing such a thing Commander. You could have used that favour on something else but you chose to use it to benefit the family here." Makarov thanked, who was now almost crying tears of joy at Cobalt's last wish fulfilled.

When the Master calmed down, he asked Hugo another question. "So tell me, what do you have any more plans regarding this incident? Or is that all the Magic Council will do to respond to this?" He wondered, as he practically spat those last few words out of his mouth.

"No… I have another plan. Those Demons said they planned to return to the Dark Wizard Zeref, presumably them mean to resurrect him." He took a deep breath as he said this next part "I'm going to set up my own division in the Magic Council and prepare it, so that way if these Demons return Fiore will be ready to fight them." Hugo said with determination in his eyes. Makarov looked completely stunned to hear this.

"Why that's amazing! To see someone go that far to form their own division to make sure that an enemy threat as powerful as that will not harm anyone else is remarkable. As a Wizard Saint you'll have my support when this happens!" Makarov said, amazed at what he had just heard.

"Thank you for your support Master Makarov. I'll be sure to contact you if any new important information comes up about all of this. What will you do now?" Hugo questioned.

"I will make sure Gildarts is alright, and then return to Magnolia. Tomorrow I will have to inform the guild about what happened, I doubt they will take it very well." Makarov told Hugo with a grimace. "Anyway, thank you for this information Commander Hugo. I wish you luck in creating your own division!" Makarov said proudly, as he made his way out of the library, while still holding the Translating Tome.

As he exited he saw that all the guests had returned home except a few. Gildarts, Lilly, and Jack were all still there in the royal hall. Jack was just looking at the floor with his arms crossed not saying a word, Lilly and Gildarts were both talking to each other to try and comfort each other. Makarov sighed before looking to Gildarts.

"Gildarts. That's time to head back now." Gildarts waved bye to Lilly before heading to Makarov who was at the door at this point.

"Are you ok?" Gildarts didn't reply to that question, he just awkwardly looked away from Makarov. Makarov brought Gildarts in for a hug which the boy returned almost immediately.

"He's… really gone isn't he Master?" Gildarts spoke with sadness in his voice. The boy had already spent all his tears upon first learning that Cobalt was dead.

"I'm afraid so Gildarts. I knew you were good friends with Cobalt so if you need anything just come by the guild and ask me." Makarov assured, as he pulled away from the hug to look at Gildarts.

"I… don't think I'm the only one you should be a bit worried about Master." Gildarts muttered before turning to look up the stairs.

"Hmm, all we can do right now is give him some time. He will recover eventually even though it may not seem like it." Makarov stated grimly before turning to Jack who had looked up at them at this point.

"I'm sorry you lost your brother. I can only ask that you be there to help your nephew in this time." Jack just nodded his head without saying a word. "There is one more thing. The Commander who arrived here to deliver the news, wanted this tome here to be handed over to June and Cade, could you please give it to either of them?" Makarov requested, holding out the book to Jack.

"I will, thank you Makarov." Jack took the book out of Makarov's hand.

Makarov smiled lightly before making his way back down the path with Gildarts beside him. He would have to prepare for tomorrow, he had no idea how the guild would react upon learning Cobalts death.

Not to mention that with him gone, he the Master of the guild, was now the only S-Class level wizard there. It would take a long time before the guild could recover from this he reckoned, both physically and mentally.

With the two of them gone it was just Jack and Lilly in the Royal hall, Pierce and Charles were given the rest of the day off. A few minutes after Makarov left with Gildarts, June came down the stairs.

"Well?" Said Jack "How… is he?" He asked with concern.

"He just wants to be alone right now." June then ran over to hug Jack "I just can't believe this happened!" She cried as she began to break down finally began to let her emotions out, now having finally left her son's presence. Jack hugged her back. He too was still in utter belief that something was able to kill his brother who was one of the strongest mages he knew.

When June had finished crying she wiped her eyes and turned to look at Lilly. "Lilly, would it be ok if you head back home now? I know you want to see if Cade is ok, but I think it's best if he's left alone right now ok? I'll let you know when you can talk with him again." Lilly nodded her head slowly and turned to look out the door.

"It's dark outside though. I'm…. a bit scared of the dark June..." She admitted shyly. Before she or Jack could reply to this a voice emerged from the library.

"I can walk her home if you want. I was about to head out anyway." Said Hugo as he entered the grand hall.

"Oh that'd be perfect Commander!" June said.

"I feel like after what happened I no longer deserve the rank of Commander. I plan on breaking away from my previous position and forming an all new section of the Magic Council, and the goal of that is to combat the threat that killed Cobalt. I um, may be stuck in the finance area of that but I'm sure I'll work something out." Hugo said.

"Oh! Well that's great Comma - er sorry Hugo. I wish you the best of luck with that!" June said praising the man. Jack on the other hand, looked at him with surprise not expecting to hear that.

"Well I'll join you two on the way back to Magnolia I gotta… pick something up there." Jack piped up before turning to June. "By the way, Makarov wanted to give this to you." He handed her the tome.

June was shocked upon hearing that and turned to look at Hugo. "Oh thank you for that! I really do appreciate what you did just there." She expressed with gratitude.

Jack, Lilly and Hugo then made their way out of the manor and back towards Magnolia leaving only June in the grand hall. She turned to look up the stairs to where Cade's bedroom was. She sighed.

All she could do right now was to try and comfort her son the best way she could. With that she locked up the manor and retired to her room.

As the days went by, Cade had not left his room since entering upon hearing about his father's death. He was brought up food by Pierce and Charles (who had also tried to support him), as well as June who really wanted her son to leave his room at this point. He couldn't stay in there forever, it was unhealthy after all.

Of course, June knew that it was possible that she and her son, may never fully get over Cobalt's death. But surely her son had to try and at least leave his room, he had been in there for ten whole days! The worst part was that she had a feeling it would only drag on for longer if nothing came up.

Lilly and Jack had returned to the house occasionally to see if Cade was ok, but it was always the same reply.

"I'm sorry he just isn't ready yet."

She had placed the Tome given to her by Jack/Hugo in one of the storage rooms, not wanting to bother with THAT until her son had recovered enough.

It was just then as she was in the lounge trying to think of a way to help her son, she heard the doorbell going off. She assumed it was Jack or Lilly again coming back round to see if Cade was feeling better. But instead, when she opened the door she was greeted by none other than Master Makarov himself.

The Master had changed out his formal clothing, and now dressed in a casual manner, with an attire consisting of a white shirt with a black Fairy Tail stamp in the middle under an orange hoodie. His attire was completed with matching orange shorts and an orange and blue striped jester hat.

"Hello there June." He greeted kindly looking up at her. "Are… things better with Cade yet?" He asked nervously.

"No, I'm afraid not… he hasn't left his room since he learned that Cobalt died! I'm so worried about him Makarov! I just want him to be well and happy, but I'm not sure how to help him!" June moaned crying out in sadness.

"Hmm, that bad huh…?" Makarov muttered grimacing at the idea of the boy refusing to leave his room.

When Makarov went to the Fairy Tail Guild the day after hearing about the incident he was forced to tell his fellow guild members about the sudden death of Cobalt.

They did not take it very well. They were all yelling at Makarov asking if they could go after the Tartaros Guild to avenge their fallen friend. He was sadly forced to shut down that idea after saying that both he and the Magic Council didn't know where it was.

After that, the guild was very quiet. Not that much conversation going around the guild members. Gildarts had been saddened by the loss of the man who he considered his teacher, who had been helping him since he had joined the guild.

Also as there was no more S-Class Wizards in the guild due to Cobalt's sudden death, Fairy Tail could no longer accept S-Class job requests which would damage the guild's reputation and ranking.

Makarov had been dealing with some "important" paperwork in his office when he accidentally sneezed quite loudly, sending a gust of wind magic towards a shelf that he barely acknowledged, which then sent all the items on it crashing onto the floor.

As he was cleaning the mess grumbling as he was doing so, he noticed two old lacrimas which had been gathering dust on the shelf. When he examined them (having not remembered what they were) he saw that there was an important message on each of them for two particular individuals. Upon having watched the videos, he picked up the two lacrimas and ran all the way here.

"Well I actually came here to help, I have something for the both of you to give you a bit of closure on Cobalt's sudden death and it might help your son with whatev-"

"YOU DO?!" June yelled at him, thankful at the idea that there was now a way she could help her son with his grief.

"Yes, yes, I do but could I please come in first?" Said Makarov taken aback by the sudden surprise and joy June had shown just there.

"Oh yes of course!" Replied June as she stepped aside to let Makarov in the house. As he entered the grand hall she then asked Makarov the important question "So what is this thing that you said would give us some closure?" She asked curiously.

"It's these two lacrima that's what!" Makarov proclaimed, as he held them both up for her to see. "They were recorded by Cobalt when he became an S-Class wizard a few years back. He recorded two of them, one for you, and one for Cade." Makarov explained nodding his head, him now remembering why he had recorded them.

June gasped lightly upon hearing that. She didn't know that her husband had left messages like that for her or his son. "Do you want to see your message first?" Makarov asked to her holding up one of the Lacrima.

"Yes please." June replied, nervous at what she may feel when seeing this message. As Makarov put the lacrima on the floor, (him then putting a little bit of magic into it to power it up), a holographic image of a slightly younger Cobalt appeared above the lacrima. Upon seeing it, June began to get a little bit emotional seeing her now dead husband again.

"Hey June… So I just got promoted to S-Class today, I er… definitely had my work cut out for me back there. I had to get by Bob and Goldmine together! I couldn't tell if they were holding back or not but I still beat them. After that I had to find three items in this forest nearby and make a potion to give to Makarov. He then decided it was good enough and granted me S-Class. Trial was a bit easier than I thought but I ain't complaining. Anyway! Now that I'm S-Class I can start doing much higher paid jobs to enough money to pay for rent, meaning that I won't have to constantly do so many A-Class jobs all the time. But er… the main reason I made this message is if something happened to me while I'm on a S-Class job."

"Look these jobs are dangerous and I'll be careful I promise. But if something ever does happen to me and I don't make it home… Then just promise me this. Please look after Cadewell, I know he's not even born yet, but when he is running or crawling around eventually, I may not always be there to see him, so please be there for him when I'm not… Heh, I still remember our first date together you know, I really loved that cake you made for me to the point where I can still practically taste it in my mouth. I love you June, more than anyone. You and eventually Cadewell are the most important people to me. So please keep fighting on for me ok? I love you honey."

June then began to break down in tears after hearing that, falling onto her knees and covering her eyes with their hands. Hearing her husband say that gave her great sadness, hearing his voice and seeing his face again after she thought she never would again. On the other hand she was filled with a newfound determination to make sure she was the best mother she could be to her son.

"Are you ok? I know it must have been hard to experience that idea of seeing him again, only to have the recording stop and be reminded that he is gone from this world." Makarov calmly asked June, putting his hand on her shoulder. "But you know where he will never be gone from? Our hearts! As long as we remember him and the good times we shared with him he will never be forgotten. That's why we need to keep moving forward. So we can live for them!" Makarov said with determination. Upon hearing that, June stood back and wiped her eyes with her hands. She then smiled at Makarov. One if the most sincere and happy smiles she had given since ten days ago.

"Master Makarov, thank you for that message just there. I actually think I needed it since learning my husband died ten days ago. Now I'm feeling a lot better! Could you show my son the other lacrima?" June asked him.

"Well of course! Just take me up to his room and I'll show him the recording, I really think it will help him." Makarov replied back to June grinning. June then led him up the stairs of the manor to the second floor where Cade's bedroom is.

"Ok this is it, just knock the door to let him know that you are here." June said nervously, as they both made their way to the door to Cade's bedroom.

Cade POV:

*knock knock*

"Cade? It's me Master Makarov. Would it be ok if I come in to see you? I have something to show you."

I was surprised to hear a knock on the door, only to then hear Master Makarov's voice on the other side. I hadn't expect him of all people to come here to see me.

"Umm, I'm sorry but I want to be alone for a while." I mentioned, as I fell back on my bed not interested in what he wanted to show me.

"I have a message from your father here, that he wished to show you." Makarov immediately replied from the other side of the door.

'What?! Is father really?… No wait… It must be a recording he wanted me to see.' I realised, as I made my way over to the bedroom door to open it slowly. As I opened it I saw Master Makarov in some more casual clothes with a lacrima orb in his hand, next to him was my mother and from what I could see from her eyes she must have been crying, she too held a lacrima orb in her hand.

"There you are. It's nice to see you again Cade. Would you mind if I come in so I can show you this video?" Makarov asked, smiling as he saw me again.

"Yeah you can both come in." I said awkwardly, as I moved further away into my room to let them in.

My bedroom was a nice size, with a double sized bed that had the comfiest pillows and bedsheets which was located at the end of my room. To the left of that was a wardrobe that held all my clothes and shoes. At the right of the room there was a small bookshelf with some of my favourite books that I liked to read.

There was also a wooden desk with a chair in the rightmost corner of the room. The windows were located on the left wall and they looked out into the garden. They were currently closed shut with the curtains pulled in to stop a lot of light from getting in the room. Despite having all of that in my room there was still plenty of space to walk around.

"Ah this is a lovely room you have here." Makarov complimented as he made his way into my room taking a look around. "Now then, I have here a lacrima with a recording from your father on it which was meant to be seen by you. I assume you'd want to see it?" Makarov requested turning to look at me.

"Yes please. That… would be really nice Master Makarov." I said as I took a deep breath. I began to get a bit emotional at the idea of seeing my now deceased father one last time. As Makarov placed the orb on the floor and put his hand on it to let a bit of magic into it, it soon activated showing a hologram of my father.

He looked a little younger than when I last saw him, and he looked a little nervous in the recording from what I could see on his face. I took a step back at seeing him again finding it painful that he was right there in front of me and yet… it wasn't actually him. Just then he started to speak.

"Hey uh… Cadewell… the uh… thing is you haven't actually been born yet as I'm saying this right now. But you're to be expected in a few weeks from now. Anyway… I made this to say that I just reached S-Class today in Fairy Tale – If you don't know what that is it's a place where all sorts of wizards come together to make new friends and go on jobs together to earn money and stuff. I'm in a position now where I can go on really tough jobs and come back with loads of money for you and your mother."

"Now I'm recording this to say… these jobs are dangerous and… there's a chance I may not come back alive from one of 'em. So I just want to say that… I may not make it back on a job one day. I just want to say if I never get to see you that is, is that I'll always love you son. If you ever needed me to help you with something I'd do it for you, If you ever needed me to be by your side I'd be there for you. Cadewell, I promise that I'll always watch over you from where I am. I know I made a lot of promises to you there… but I kind of need you to me one for me. If I ever… die promise me that you will be strong and kind to others, that you will keep moving forward and always press onwards even when things seem like they are at their worst for you. I love you son, I always will."

When the recording ended, I began to break down and cry uncontrollably. I was emotional the whole way though the recording, but it was hearing my father say that he would always love me – even before I was born that really broke me up. It wasn't long until I felt my mother bring me in for a hug, with her hugging me tightly.

As I continued to cry I began to think about the last thing my father said to me. "Promise me that you will be strong and kind to others, that you will keep moving forward and always press onwards even when things seem like they are at their worst for you." As I recalled that I dried up my tears and wiped my face using the sleeves on my shirt. I then let go of my mother and turned to face Master Makarov.

"Thank you *sniff* for bringing this to me *sniff* It means so much to hear that from him." My feeling of sadness was then replaced by confusion, as I noticed that Makarov was… tearing up as well?

"Oh… it's so sad to see Cobalt's last message to his you. He loved you before you were even born!" Makarov then started to cry just like I had a while ago.

"Agh! Master please don't cry!" I said nervously trying to defuse the emotions he was feeling, as I heard my mother laughing from behind us finding the current situation hilarious to watch.

Well there we have it folks. Cobalt's final message was delivered to his wife and son thanks to old Makarov. We also got to see Hugo break away from his old job and go off to try and from his own division to combat Tartaros and other dark guilds.

Now that the tears are out of the way, we can focus on other things in this story that will be important. Keep reading to find out what.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed, and I'll see you in the next chapter!
