Chapter 1: Awakening on the Shore
An Eevee woke up on the shore of a beach. As soon as he awoke, he immediately felt the intense pain in his body. He had a throbbing headache, and there was a burning pain in his legs. He let out a groan, as he rolled over onto his side. He saw the vast expanse of water in front of him. There was a single thought in his mind; "Where am I...?"
He tried to stand up, but the aching feeling in his head quickly knocked him back down to the ground. He let out another groan. He tried crawling, but failed. Every attempt he made at moving resulted in pain. As he struggled to get up, another thought appeared in his head; "Who am I...?"
His eyelids grew heavy. He began to fight off his exhaustion, which was pulling him back into a state of unconsciousness. "N-No... Must stay awake...!" Was his last thought, as he eventually gave into his fatigue, and passed out, lying down on the shore.
"Okay, Sammy, today's the day that you're finally going to become an Explorer!"
An Absol hyped herself up as she paced back and forth across the outskirts of the town. Her determination began to fade as she began to doubt herself. She stopped her pacing. "B-But will I even be able to...? The Pokemon of Sugarcane Town already don't like me, why would the Pokemon of the Guild be any different? This is stupid!"
She threw herself onto the ground in a sitting position. She let out a sigh, as her gaze turned towards the ground. She tightly clasped the pendant she wore around her neck. She looked at it with a sad expression. "I promised to you guys that I'd become an Explorer, but I just can't! I-I'm so stupid!"
Out of pure rage, she ripped the pendant off of her neck, and tossed it away towards the beach. Her anger was quickly replaced with panic, as she realized what she had done. She cried out; "W-Wait, no!"
She got up, and ran towards the beach. She frantically looked through the sand to find her pendant. She felt even more sorrow when she was unable to find it. Frustrated and saddened, she threw herself onto the ground, and began bawling; "Noooo! I lost my pendant! T-That was the only thing I had left of them... I'm a wimp, and an idiot!"
After a few seconds of lying, and crying on the ground, her loud cries regressed to quiet sniffles. She sat up, and looked at the sand beneath her paws. She was stricken with grief. When she looked up, she spotted a swathe of brown in the distance. She squinted her eyes at it to try and see it better, but it didn't work. Her previous sadness was now replaced with curiosity. She completely forgot about her lost pendant.
"What in Arceus's name?..." She trailed off.
She decided that she'd get a closer look. She stood up, and walked towards the direction of the mysterious brown blur. As she got closer, she noticed a few details of it. "Hm... I also see some cream color... There's a bushy thing that kind of looks like a tail.. Pointed things that look like ears... Wait a minute, that's an Eevee!"
Sammy realized that what she was seeing was another Pokemon. Now, she was running over to the Eevee to see if they were okay. She crouched beside them. Their fur looked damp, they had a few bruises and scratches, and small bits of sand speckled their body. Sammy would have thought that they were dead if she didn't see their chest slowly falling and rising.
She saw that the cream colored pattern on their tail was spiky, which meant that they were a male. But that didn't matter. Her main question was; "Is he okay...?"
"H-Hey! Are you alright?!" Sammy asked the Eevee, looking at him with a worried expression. "You look hurt..."
No response. She grew more worried. She nudged him with her paw, as she began trying to call him awake again. "Wake up! Wake up!"
Just as she was about to speak again, she was interrupted by a pain and exhaustion stricken groan coming from the Eevee. "Ughhhh..."
Sammy let out a sigh of relief. The Eevee began to wake up. As his eyes fluttered open, he began to stand up. Suddenly, he let out a sharp yelp. He fell back down towards the ground. He cried; "Ow...!"
"Oh, Arceus, are you okay?!" Sammy yelled to him. She became even more worried.
"O-Ow... I-I'm fine... Just a bit of pain..." The Eevee replied in a pained, but somewhat reassuring tone. He slowly, and shakily got back up, and stood on his paws. He winced. After a few seconds, he stopped wincing and shaking altogether. He let out a sigh. "Okay... The pain has somewhat stopped..."
"That's good..." Sammy said. She sat down, and reached into the satchel she wore around her shoulder, and took out a large, blue fruit. "Would you like an oran berry? It'll numb the pain."
"Yes, please." The Eevee answered. Sammy handed the berry to him. He sat down, and began munching on it. "Mmmmm..."
The two sat there, not exchanging a word. After a few more seconds, Sammy decided to break the silence. "What were you doing washed up on the shore? Usually, I don't see Eevees washed up on the shore, or any Pokemon for that matter..."
The Eevee finished the rest of the oran berry, before replying. "I'm not sure. I don't remember..."
"I feel like that's something you'd remember!" Sammy added.
"I-I don't really remember anything, actually." The Eevee responded.
"Anything?!" Sammy repeated. She was appalled by the Eevee's lack of memory. But she was also concerned. "Do you even remember your own name?!"
"Oh, of course I do!" The Eevee said. He introduced himself; "My name is Kuro."
"That's a nice name!" Sammy complimented his name. "I'm Sammy, by the way. I'm glad you at least remember your name..."
"Thanks, you too!" Kuro complimented her back. Both Pokemon smiled at each other.
"Man, losing most of your memory must really suck..." Sammy commented. "I'd be really sad if I lost something... Important... Of... Mine... Oh, Arceus!"
Sammy began to panic again as she remembered why she came to the beach in the first place. She stood up, and began frantically digging through the sand to find her missing pendant. "I-I just remembered why I came here in the first place! My pendant! I-I lost my pendant!"
"Your pendant...? What is... Your pendant?" Kuro inquired, as he walked up to Sammy.
"I-It's a necklace! I-Inside it is something very important!" Sammy stammered, her panic making her unable to speak properly. "I-It's something... It's very important to me!"
After a few minutes of searching, Sammy was beginning to believe she truly lost it. That's when she heard Kuro call her; "Sammy!"
"What?!" She turned around to look at Kuro.
In one paw, he held a pendant necklace. The foundation was made of gold, and the pendant itself was made of ruby. "Is this what you're looking for...?"
"O-Oh my Arceus!" Sammy exclaimed. She ran over to Kuro, and inspected the pendant necklace. It was indeed her pendant. "I-It is! Oh my Arceus, thank you, Kuro!"
"Oh, your welcome-"
Kuro was cut off, as a Pokemon suddenly bashed into his side, knocking him to the ground. Another Pokemon appeared, and snatched the pendant. Sammy was too shocked to move. The first Pokemon that appeared was a Torracat, and the one that snagged the pendant was a Haunter. The Haunter spoke, as he looked at the pendant; "Ooh! Shiny!"
"Ow...!" Kuro groaned in pain.
Sammy snapped out of her state of shock, and shouted at the two Pokemon. "H-Hey! That's mine! Give it back!"
"Hm...?" The Torracat turned over to her. He looked her up and down, before letting out a hearty chuckle. "Ahahahaha! You think we'll give it to you just because you asked?! No way!"
"Wait a minute, I know you..." The Haunter said, as he squinted his eyes at Sammy. "Say—You're that Absol we see around the outskirts of the town all the time! Kekekeke!"
"W-Well...! Y-Yeah... I am..." Sammy glanced at the ground for a few seconds, before looking up, and speaking once more. "B-But that doesn't mean anything! I'm strong... And if you don't give me back my pendant, I'm going to have to make you!"
Both the Torracat and Haunter paused for a few seconds, before they both let out loud laughs. "Hahahahahahah!"
Sammy looked at the two, with a fearful expression. She slowly backed away. Tears began welling up in her eyes, as she realized that her attempt in intimidating the two of them failed. She looked towards Kuro, who was slowly getting back up. Once he was back on his paws, he shouted at the Torracat and Haunter; "G-Give that back! It belongs to her!"
"Give it back, it belongs to her!" The Haunter mocked Kuro's words. "Who are you, her boyfriend?! Pipe down!"
"W-What?! No!" Sammy interjected. A bright red blush formed on her face. "H-He's not my boyfriend...! We just met!"
"Whatever you say, wimp!" Torracat responded. He looked away from Sammy. "We'll be taking our leave now... You're not getting this back. Hahahah!"
Then, the two Pokemon turned tail and ran away into a nearby cave. Kuro and Sammy watched in shock. Sammy stood there for a few seconds, before beginning to bawl; "W-Waaaaaaaaaaah! N-No! T-They took my pendant! Noooooooo!"
She miserably threw herself onto the ground, and began crying even louder. She was stricken with sorrow. She felt something soft press against her side. She looked to see what it was. It was Kuro, soothingly placing his paw on her side, and looking at her with a sympathetic expression.
"I-It's okay! D-Don't worry, everything is going to be fine..." Kuro spoke comfortingly to Sammy. He was clearly trying his best to calm her down. He gazed at the ground, as if unsure about what he was about to say. He then looked back up towards Sammy. "I... I'm going to help you get it back!"
Sammy's cries regressed to mere sniffles. She looked at Kuro. "Y-You will? B-But... We'll have to go into a Mystery Dungeon... And that's dangerous!"
"Yes, but you're strong." Kuro pepped up Sammy. "You're a kind-hearted and powerful Pokemon. I'm sure a Mystery Dungeon... whatever that is... stands no chance against you! I believe in you! Believe in yourself!"
"D-Do you really mean all that...?" Sammy asked.
"Yes." Kuro answered.
"O-Okay." Sammy picked herself up. She wiped tears from her face. Her expression shifted from one of sorrow, to determination. "I sure as heck don't like the idea, but we're gonna go into that Mystery Dungeon, and get my pendant back... You got that, Kuro?"
"That's the spirit!" Kuro grinned. "Understood, Sammy! I'll help you to the best of my abilities!"
"Right!" Sammy smiled. "Then let's go..."
The two Pokemon turned towards the cave they saw the Haunter and Torracat run off to, and began walking towards it.
This is the first part to this fanfic. I'm curious to see how far I will take this. So far, I'm greatly enjoying the process of writing everything. I know this chapter was very short, but I'll work my hardest to make sure the next following chapters are quite lengthy. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. This is my first time writing and posting on this website, so I'm still getting used to the formatting, lol
I'm also a complete novice when it comes to fanfiction, and writing as a whole, so please give me tips and tricks to better my writing prowess. With that out of the way, this is the end of these author's notes. I'll see you in the next chapter. Peace be upon you, and may God be with you.
