A Light in the Darkness: Hotaru's quirk didn't always come easy to her, controlling energy can be overwhelming, but she is determined to be the best hero she can possibly be despite all the circumstances she has against her. OCx?
Author's Note: I have had this fic in my head for a while now. I am going to try my best not to create a mary-sue or one who is overpowered. But honestly, this is a story I am writing for fun in my spare time and I don't want to be too pressured, so I'll let it come as I write. I also hope that I am going to make my character believable. She is already integrated into the past of several main characters and we will slowly learn their history in flashbacks (the first one is in this chapter actually), but there are already character relationships established. I have seen this trope in several excellent fics, but I wanted to try my own spin. Please give this a shot? And please review?

Chapter 1: Something Strange is Going On
Deft fingers with small, pale, lined scaring all over them quickly tied long white hair in a fishtail braid to hang down a set of firm, broad shoulders. "Hotaru! You're going to be late!" Large, yellow eyes looked away from the bathroom mirror to see her older sister's own yellow eyes looking at her behind black glasses, leaning her small frame against the bathroom door while holding a coffee mug, a small smile on her tired face. "The entrance exams start soon, yes?"
"Ichika," Hotaru sighed, swinging the tail back over her shoulders and walking past her smaller sister, a fact she always likes to bring up as she was younger than her by 10 years and was actually taller than the older girl, "I am about to leave." Hotaru knelt down in their small apartment's entryway to pull on her well worn, black, steel toed boots. "Don't you have work as well? The bookstore today, right?"
"Yep!" Ichika smiled, "The Morimoto's were kind enough to let me have a graveyard shift at the restaurant tonight so I won't have to go in till after we have dinner! I'm making something to celebrate you getting into UA!"
Hotaru gave her sister a dry stare. "We won't know that I'll get in until I see the acceptance letter Ichi." The older sibling just grinned down at the girl lacing her shoes.
"With a quirk like yours? You are a shoe in!" Hotaru rolled her eyes, standing up and grabbing the poptarts her sister was now holding out to her, having pulled them from her robe, "Do your best!"
"I'll try my best. Don't go overboard with dinner," Hotaru replied, giving her sister a small smile and exiting the apartment. The Tanimori sisters lived on the second floor of the large apartment complex in a cramped, one bedroom apartment. Ichika, Hotaru's older sister, worked two jobs to provide the apartment for both of them and pay for Hotaru's middle school. The white haired girl was applying to UA not only because she wanted to use her quirk to save and help everyone, but also because the hero program was scholarship based; everyone who got into the hero course had their schooling paid for. Hopefully, if she got in, Ichika would be able to cut down on her hours working. Hotaru frowned, once more feeling a familiar pang at the thought that her older sister always had to take care of her, working long, exhausting hours, just to provide for them. If she didn't get into UA she wouldn't be-
"Hotaru-chan!" Yellow eyes blinked, losing their train of thought at the call of their name, looking up at the front of the apartment building to see their green-haired friend waiting for them.
"Izuku," Hotaru greeted, amused as the predictable blush spread across the boys freckled cheeks at her calling him by his name; she never got tired of making her friend blush despite the fact that they had known each other since they were practically in diapers. "Long time no see." Hotaru hadn't seen the boy since the beginning of spring break, which honestly felt like a long time to the girl even though it had only been a few weeks.
"Sorry Hotaru-chan!" Izuku Midoriya was one of Hotaru's closest fiends, with wild green hair, large green eyes and a dusting of freckles across his cheeks. He was also shorter than her as well. Hotaru wasn't a giant by any means, but she had inherited her late father's stocky build with broad shoulders and thick thighs that were muscular due to the nature in which she trained her quirk. Hotaru raised an eyebrow once she reached the boy, his energy felt different and it looked like he had put on some muscle. "I have been so busy training for the exam!"
Hotaru was skeptical if her quirkless friend would actually be able to enter UA's hero program, not because he didn't have what it takes to be a hero because she thought that her friends personality was a shoe in for it, but because as far as she knew, no one without a quirk had ever become a hero. However, she wasn't worrying about that now...her friend felt completely different than the last time she had seen him. And of course, everyone's energy can and will fluctuate from time to time, but not like this.
Midoriya started sweating at the skeptical look he was getting from the slightly taller girl, "Hotaru-chan...is something wrong? Is there something on my face?" He began scrambling around, feeling around his face for what the girl could possibly be starting at.
"Your energy feels different" The girl simply stated, causing the boy to freeze entirely.
"Wha-What do you mean Hotaru-chan?!" Midoriya asked, his voice going high and his face went a little pale.
"I mean, you don't even feel like you anymore" Hotaru states again, a frown coming to her face at her friend's more usual than weird behavior.
Hotaru's quirk, Chakra, allowed her to store and control energy in her body and feel the life energy of every living thing around her, including her friends. And considering they had grown up together, Hotaru knew Midoriya's energy like it was the back of her hand. The boy usually had a calm, if excitable at times, inner energy to him that was comforting as it usually wasn't so erratic or unstable because he didn't have a quirk that could affect what she felt. However, his energy had done a complete one-eighty. Hotaru could feel it spiking out all-over the place, almost as if the energy in his body was trying to escape because it wasn't used to his body or even suppose to be there, and there was so much of it, that Hotaru almost felt as if she could feel six or seven types of energies mixed in. Which was impossible. She couldn't think of anything that could cause a person's energy to change so much unless they had a quirk...but he didn't have one.
"Well-Well" Midoriya started, sweating slightly and panicking because he had completely forgotten how his friend's quirk would work around him. "About that Haruto…I have something to tell you while we walk to the entrance exam - we really need to get going!"
Hotaru checked the time on her watch and realized that they needed to leave if they wanted to get there in time to take the UA entrance exam. "Fine, let's go!" Hotaru started down their street, her green haired friend quickly running to catch up to her, "But you are explaining everything on the way."
Midoriya blushed again at his friend's heavy, expectant stare. "You'll never believe it Hotaru-chan!" He started quickly, a smile coming to his face despite the nervousness he was feeling. "I have a quirk!"
Note: So there is the first chapter! Let me know what you all think. At first, I was going to make Hotaru live at an orphanage, but I decided to have her have an older sister that takes care of her. And yes, her quirk is called "Chakra" and will have some inspiration from Naruto, but it will also be something different as well. I have actually gotten inspiration for her quirk from several different things...I just didn't know what to call it. So, if you have another idea, I'll take it! The second chapter, which is already written, should be out in a couple of days.
Stay safe and know you are important and loved.
