After they left Seto called a couple of people on her resume.
"Hello, how may I direct your call."
"I'm looking for information about a teacher named Raina Amaris."
"Ms. Amaris worked here for about a year. She was fine. But I suppose young Prince Timmy and Princess Cynthia were too sophisticated for her. She wasn't a very good teacher."
"Thank you for your time." Seto said, hanging up. "Or perhaps it was more to do with the lack of parenting. I'm going to assume when she said some didn't want to learn that the parents didn't force it." He made a couple of more phone calls and only a couple of others were like the first one. All the others had nothing but good things to say. A couple even expressed sorrow when she left as their kids liked her but had to let her go due to political pressure. They were being told to choose someone from their country. Seto had never completely subscribed to the whole you must be from our country. Although because of his political standing he had to be careful about choosing anyone not from their country. He did understand to a certain degree as they don't want spies from foreign countries infiltrating and leaking secrets to a possible unfriendly county looking to conquer them. He hoped that Yami's new guard won't be an issue seeing as he doesn't appear to have a home country.
He decided to talk to Samantha. He knocked on her door and waited. Samantha was surprised to see him. She quickly put her arms around him and kissed him. He kissed back before pulling away. "So, did you come to ask me to the Ball?" Samantha asked.
"I can't."
"What? You asked her instead of me?"
"I haven't asked anyone yet but yes I am going to invite Natalie."
"I don't understand. You just said you haven't invited her yet. So why not invite me."
"Samantha, you know as well as I do how inappropriate it would be for me to take you."
"No, I don't understand."
"If anyone asks what you do for a living and you tell them you're the royal tutor. Can you imagine the gossip and the looks? What will people think?"
Samantha waved it off, "Who cares. Let them talk. It doesn't affect me."
Seto was surprised. Did she understand that his reputation would become as bad as his late father's if this got out? Rumors that he sleeps with staff would start. Then rumors that she's either a bad teacher and only got the job by sleeping with the king or only got the job because she was sleeping with him. "When did you want to start school again?" Seto asked to change the subject.
"Monday. Have Maura meet me in the study room and tell Mokuba to meet me Tuesday morning."
Seto wasn't happy. He'd hired her initially to teach Mokuba. "Why start with her?"
"What do you mean? I suppose I could take them both for one more day and send Maura back with homework and do only Mokuba Tuesday."
The tone in her voice indicated she was disappointed in the thought of having both kids and taking Mokuba. "Nevermind, from this point forward you will be exclusively Maura's teacher."
Samantha blinked in surprise, "What? What about Mokuba? You're not thinking of tutoring him yourself or sending him to the local school are you?"
"I don't have the patience or time to tutor anyone. I would also never send him to public school. Yami did say he wanted to. I would have overruled it. No, I was recently approached by someone looking for a job and had very good teaching credentials."
"I don't understand. Why are you letting them teach Mokuba?"
"Why not? Do you have any lesson plans for the kids yet?"
"Well I do for Maura. I was going to work on plans for Mokuba while Maura worked."
"Samantha, do you want to teach Mokuba or Maura?"
"Seto, I'm a teacher. I want to help kids learn."
Seto wasn't convinced. It felt like she was dodging the question. He decided to try a different tactic, "So, I should just have the new teacher take Maura on then?"
"If…if you insist on a new teacher then it can't be helped. After all, you hired me for Mokuba. I'll continue to do so."
"The new teacher will be for Mokuba. It's not up for discussion." Seto said after hearing the hesitation in her voice. "You're welcome to come to the ball if you so choose. I just can't be your date."
"I wish you could be my date."
"I'm sorry it can't happen." With that he left. Irritated that she didn't argue more on keeping Mokuba as her student. Then after walking away he rounded the corner and stopped, for some reason this room seemed to be calling him. He opened it and it seemed like a normal room. Nothing special. Then he felt something hot in his pocket and pulled out the feather he had been given. It was glowing but it wasn't hot. He realized that the feather had chosen this room. So he dropped the feather and a minute later a portal opened.
"You called for us, sir?" Zariah asked. Seeing as she didn't see him as her king she didn't wish to call him sire. But she still wanted to be respectful.
"Yes," Then turned to Raina, "You're hired. If you wish, you can start Monday."
"Monday? I, I never expected so soon. I'll have to get my books together."
"We have a library in the castle and a lot of the rooms also have extensive collections of books. I can have someone show you the library if you'd like?" Seto offered.
Raina bowed and said, "Thank you, but I will find it if I need it. But I will need a classroom."
"Since your feather led me to this room it can be your classroom."
"It did?" Raina asked, shocked.
Zariah cast a spell that Seto saw flickering lights appear. "Strange, there's nothing here. It's just an office, nothing more special." Then Zariah found a feather duster appear in her hand. She looked at Raina.
"This place is filthy. It needs to be cleaned."
"We have magic for that or I'm sure if we ask politely King Kaiba can get some staff to do it."
"Why ask his staff to do it? We're perfectly capable of doing it. I also don't like using magic to clean. One it's not as satisfying and two if your magic starts to glitch because you're sick it could all come undone."
"My magic has never glitched. No matter how sick I was, my magic has never come undone. You need to work on yours if it comes undone so easily."
"You got me this job. The least you can do is help me clean my new office. Then help me find a place to live." Raina said.
"There should be a room across from the hall in the tower that Zariah is currently staying in. You can use that one."
Raina smiled and said, "Thank you. I appreciate it."
"If you require anything more, let me know and I'll see what I can do."
"Would you mind if I put a sign on the door? There are so many Mokuba or anyone you might send to get him if you need him for something, might have trouble finding the right room."
Seto thought about it and realized that the office Samantha was using had a plaque on it stating it was an official office classroom. He nodded, "Yes you may put a sign on the door."
Raina waved her hand and a small colorful sign read: school in session please knock. She turned it over and it read: school classroom not in session at the moment.
Seto wasn't exactly thrilled with the colorful sign but whatever. He left the girls to it.
