Mistress of Fire Index
Characters Bios
Aguya: She's a chambermaid. Fire Lord Sozin meets her by chance at Avatar Roku's wedding. They both feel a strong connection to each other. However, because Aguya is a lowly servant, she's not even supposed to look or talk to the Fire Lord.
She's the story Cinderella. She's very kindhearted, caring, loyal, and speaks quite elegantly. She's exceptionally self-aware and brilliant despite being forbidden from having a formal education.
She's also a firebender, which she must keep a secret from her boss, Mistress Sumiko, who hates firebenders. Mistress Sumiko strongly believes no servant should be one, even if that can't be helped. Aguya is also extremely beautiful, both inside and out. She's the spitting image of her late maternal grandmother. She loves her family and best friend, Lian, very dearly and will do anything to protect them.
Suzuki and Niko: Aguya's parents who are in their fifties. They've worked as servants downstairs their entire lives. Suzuki is the best seamstress in the palace, while her husband works in the kitchen washing dishes and taking out the trash.
They both genuinely love each other and are very protective of their daughter. They're even willing to stand up for her when Mistress Sumiko becomes incredibly abusive to their daughter, which they figure is partly out of jealousy for whatever reason.
They're devoted servants and parents. Both wished their daughter could have a better life than being a servant. Of course, they only vocalize this if they can ensure privacy.
Lian: She's Aguya's best friend and more like a sister to her. In the Cinderella aspect, she is the nicer stepsister, as the modern versions show that one of the two stepsisters is nicer to Cinderella. She may be plain-looking compared to Aguya's outstanding beauty. But they're joined at the hip and will do anything for one another.
Mistress Sumiko: She's in her late 70s had served as overseer of the servants for over fifty years. She serves as the antagonist and would be labeled "Evil Stepmother" for the Cinderella aspect of the story. She's ruthless and callous. She demands perfection from all her underlings. She firmly believes servants should be non-benders, so any bender must hide that fact from her. She constantly verbally abuses those who work under her.
At times, she even gets physical, but people are too scared to tell their Fire Lord the truth of how she treats them. She is the one who ensures the servants remain uneducated. So they have no chance at a better life. She has some secrets that will be revealed later in the story.
Mayumi: Aguya's late grandmother and former best friend to Sumiko when they were young. They're as close as sisters till something breaks their bond permanently.
Lord Kazan is Sozin's grandfather's best friend, Fire Lord Zenki. He and the Fire Lord were close as brothers, and their bond never broke.
Fire Lord Zenki: His personality matches that of Iroh, who is the best. However, Sozin bears a strong resemblance to his grandfather. He wouldn't have approved of the 100-year War Sozin started without a doubt. Nor what the royal family became.
