I motionlessly stared at the parking lot, waiting for my cab… yeah… cab… I decided that I didn't want to go home today and instead go to Seattle, I did want to stay for Bella's birthday but then she had a party to attend, so instead of just sitting around, I was going to get things done.
A weird feeling had come over me, as usual, it was a warning. 'Prepare,' it whispered without words. Chills ran down my spine.
How could you prepare for something you had no idea about…?
I pulled out my notebook and stared at the bookstore name…. maybe it had answers… maybe it didn't… the shop was said to be popular among the people who believe in the "supernatural" or the "Lost legends"
Most people would laugh but I guess it's not that funny when you are somewhat "supernatural"
A honk snapped me from my thoughts. "Dammit it! I really should pay more attention" I quickly got up and was ready to dart to the cab but my legs felt like jello.
Seriously?
Now's not the time to be wobbly. I'm a girl on a mission.
I somehow got into the cab and told him where I wanted to go.
"If I had a car…" I sighed. It's okay… ill get one once I graduate and get a good job! I never put much thought into my future… but one thing was for sure, ill damn well make sure that I will not be in this position.
The car shook slightly as we made our way to Seattle. I took in deep breaths, something told me I was going to find something really important and maybe be dangerous… I picked at my fingernails. I was swallowed in my thoughts; it was as if I was currently trying to not drown in my problems. I felt clueless… I guess ever since I moved to folks, I realized how much I didn't know, when I was in Minnesota it was as if I looked away from my problems and it was just that I had to prevent people from knowing my problems.
It was as if everything was clear. My parents had left me, I went from one foster parent to the other until I found ross and laura and I just wanted to be independent and when I came here it was like a harsh slap of reality, in reality, everything I thought I knew was something else in different. I bit my lip in frustration.
But one thing never changed, I guess…
My will. If I thought about it… I became legally emancipated for me so I didn't have to worry about burdening people so then I wouldn't feel unwanted I can be happy even now… I'm accepting the fact I am different and… that's ok… yeah
And there are many more things that I'm clueless about… and that's ok too… yes it was hard that I found out that I thought clear was actually a blurred image, not the real one…
I softly laughed to myself. Jesus. I had an emotional moment in a cab. Pffffttt
"We're here madam" the bored cab driver spoke. jeez, his face and his tone sounded depressed.
"Um yeah thanks," I said as I got off the cab and paid the driver. Jeez, I hope he gets through whatever dilemma he is in!
I took in a deep breath, here I come.
⋙—⋘
I aimlessly wandered the streets of Seattle. Ok so not aimlessly but hey, I was new here after all.
Ok. I could have asked the driver to drop me off a bit closer. But of course not! My brain didn't function well enough to think that.
I really must be high today on something…
I sighed deeply, as I continued walking.
Wait! This is the route! Ahhhhh Yesss! I internally screeched as I ran down the street not bothered about the weird looks I was getting, but I should have just speed-walked because I collided with a strong chest and fell on my butt.
"Ow," I heard myself and the… man. Oh god!
"I'm so so so so sorry!" I said quickly getting on my feet. But before I could give him a hand, he stood up before.
"It's fine." I felt the heat rush to my cheeks in embarrassment.
"No, it's really not, oh my god! I'm really sorry" the man chuckled and shook his head.
"It's fine really… I'm Riley Biers, you are?" still in embarrassment, I tried to calm myself down.
"I'm Daniella Ivy…" I said biting my lip. Why oh why am I stupid?
"Daniella, do you mind me asking why were you running?" he spoke looking around for any signs of danger. Oh. I mentally face-palmed myself, of course, people will think you were being chased by a serial killer or something! Why do I get excited so much?! I felt like ripping my hair out
"O-oh I um was lost and got excited when I um found the place I was supposed to go" I looked down sheepishly. Then unexpectedly he chuckled, and my head snapped up.
Amusement was written all over his face, and heat once again rushed to my cheeks… oh my god, the embarrassment…
I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
"Where were you headed too?" he asked flashing a smile, he looked to be in his… twenties? I debated whether or not to tell him where I'm going, I mean he is a stranger… oh what the hell, I hope he isn't the serial killer
"Um the bookstore, right over there," I said pointing over his shoulder, he glanced back and shook his head.
"Funny, I was heading there too…" he said brushing some hair off his face. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not…
"We could both go there together" he suggested awkwardly. I bit my lip again debating, I mean we are going there anyways.
"Sure…" I spoke shooting him a soft smile.
"Quest bookstore" I stared at the bold orange letters.
Here goes nothing…
Riley reached for the door handle before I could,
"Ladies first" making me blush again.
"Thank you," I told him as I entered. A strong smell of cinnamon, vanilla… and old books… reached my nose.
It burned but in a good way. It was like we entered some sort of… fortune-telling shop? I dunno…
I stared in awe at the shop's aesthetic and the countless books, there were candles placed here and there but not lit… or I could imagine the outcome…
"You've been here before?" I asked Riley. He smiled and answered,
"Yeah, plenty of times… I like the supernatural theme… its very… captivating" he spoke.
"Since you got lost, I assume it's your first time in Seattle or this part of Seattle?" he continued.
"Yup, first timer" I answered still caught up in the rows of books. I have to come here more often I thought. It's not like I have anything to do, other than school, homework and my job.
"Are you a tourist or have you moved here recently?" he asked curiously.
"Well, I moved to Folks and came here to check out this bookstore"
"Hey, I'm from Folks too, never seen you though…" he said surprised.
"Yeah, I moved like 8 months ago"
"Well, hello there" an old lady spoke, jump scaring me.
"Edna!" Riley exclaimed giving the short old lady; Edna a hug… ok?
"I see, you've finally brought a girl along," Edna said patting his shoulder.
I knew for a fact,
That I,
Was a tomato right now…
And it seems so was Riley…
"Edna! We just met!" oh my god… this embarrassing day couldn't get worse…
"Ah but that's how it starts!" she said giving a laugh. Ok yeah… it did get worse…
"Do you want some tea, dear?" Edna asked.
"No thank you, ma'am" I answered politely, trying to not think at all.
"Please call me, Edna!" she spoke, ok she was nice.
BUT MA'AM, YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY THAT!
"Ma-I mean Edna, could you please tell me where I could find books about witches? Or do you know of any books about scarlet witches?" this caused Edna to raise her eyebrow.
"The witch books are that way," she said pointing in a direction. "but I'm not sure if there are any books about scarlet witches… I'm afraid I haven't even heard about them"
Liar the voice whispered. I shook my head to get rid of that voice. Why would she lie?
"That's fine but thank you," I said smiling at her. She slowly disappeared to wherever she came from.
"Sorry about that" Riley spoke again. I took in a deep breathe,
"It's all right really, she seems to know you well"
"She does, I've come here almost forever for all of my research," he said awkwardly. Why was that kinda dorky?
"Witches?" he asked raising an eyebrow. "Why?"
"For research just like you…" I said with a slight smirk. He tapped his chin and narrowed his eyes playfully. "Seriously?" I crossed my arms and raised my eyebrows
"What?" I asked.
"Personally, I prefer vampires, they seem more complicated than other creatures" if only you knew…
"So you're saying witches aren't cool enough?" I asked playfully glaring at him. Are witches cool though? Hell, I'm not sure im entirely witch though… Damien, Viana, Tristan… they all seem to have this figured out but me? I don't even know what to do with myself, I didn't even know I was a witch in the first place…
"Well not that they aren't but vampires are cooler"
"Pffft" I spoke "But we all know werewolves are the best"
There was silence.
Until the both of us broke out in laughter.
"Ok, ok. Now come on, ill show you, your witchy books…"
⋙—⋘
Nothing.
Nothing at all. All of them were those typical witch books! We don't make potions!... I think…
But that was not what I was searching for… like at all.
"Bummer, these aren't what you wanted…" Riley said looking apologetic. I talked with him a lot while we were looking for books, turns out he is still 18 and not in his twenties, once he got to know what I thought his age was, he went on to telling that he is not that old and then I argued, playfully of course, how twenties isn't old!
"Yeah…" I replied. Just then Edna walked in.
"Found what you wanted?"
"No," I said sighing sadly "But… I've got a book I'd like to read…" I said, placing it on her counter.
Riley disappeared back into the books saying he needed a book and would be back soon, however he left me and Edna alone.
"So deary… where did you hear about scarlet witches?" damn…
"Um my grandma used to er tell me about witches… she was very fond of them, she um passed recently so I wanted to know more, you know get to know her interests, like closure" I lied. Gurl, you don't even have a family! Let alone a grandma!
"I'm sorry for your loss… Look, I have a book… which briefly mentions about what you say…" she hesitantly opened her drawer. I felt power unconsciously leave my system…
"How could I know if she misuses it? This book is said to be important… but not many people know about… them. And if she knew, there must be a reason! But… what if?" I gasped lightly but not loud enough for Edna to hear. Did she know about… my kind? Wait. Did I just use my powers? No no no… did I just lose control? did I just read her mind?
"Are you ok?" Edna asked, probably seeing my panic-stricken face. I nodded slowly.
"Here," she said giving me a big brown book well not big… it was small but with many pages.
It was old… and the brown leather cover was slightly covered in dust but was kept in good condition…
"Thank you," I said genuinely grateful, I could finally get to know something!
"How much is it?" I asked willing to pay more than she asked.
"It's on the house… but I hope you get to know whatever you are searching for…" she said. Just then Riley walked in with a book in his hand.
"You got another book?" he asked.
"Yeah, you got what you wanted?" I asked. He smiled a dazzling smile "I did"
"I better go now… I have school tomorrow" I said carefully placing the two books in my bag.
"Have a nice day, dear" Edna spoke taking the book from Riley's hand. "I hope you come again for more books"
"I definitely will, have a nice day too Edna" I smiled at the old lady. "Bye Riley, thanks for being my friend" I smiled, it was kinda awkward but definitely genuine. He nodded disappointedly, why? I don't know…
"Bye," he said softly. I waved at him goodbye again as I left the store.
I looked if there was a cab approaching, you know what? I should just walk a little further, take a bus maybe… after all it was a long drive.
"Hey! Wait!" I heard a voice before I started walking away. Riley?
I turned to see Riley standing.
"Here," he said handing me a piece of paper. Scribbled on it were… his number and his name. Heat rushed to my cheeks… ok maybe I find him a little attractive
"Text me," he said awkwardly. He then looked up and met my eyes, amusement overtook his features.
"First time?" he asked. Oh god… I nodded shyly.
"Me too…" he said making me smile. "Taxi!" I heard him call out. Just then a taxi parked in front of us,
"I hope to meet you again soon," he said opening the door and signalling me to get in. I nodded and got in saying "Thank you"
"Where to ma'am?" the driver asked me.
"Forks, please…"
I rolled down the window and waved at Riley, his figure getting smaller as the driver drove further away. I silently stared at the piece of paper, and hundreds of emotions raced in my mind. I felt special, and I haven't felt that way… I leaned back and sighed in content.
