Okay, next chapter up and running. A certain someone's adult self is introduced here, at the beginning. Adding the eight canon travelers, between Nathan, Priscilla, Alistair and Sabrina, there are now twelve total in the fic, and Nathan and Sabrina don't even fit the Octopath naming theme, oh well.
Disclaimer: Octopath Traveler II and its characters, locations, etc. were made by Square.
Song of Hope
The knight who Alistair had sent to deliver the message returned to Vella Castle. The king was currently meeting with Commander Cadoc, whose hair was graying due to his age, but the knight commander was as spry and strong as when he was younger.
"Since monster activity is growing more frequent, extra patrols and surveillance have been been set up" The commander stated"Along with escort requests for those of the citizenry who cannot fight."
"Understandable" King Lorian replied"And have we heard anything about Sir Nathan and Lady Priscilla?"
Before the commander could reply, the knight who Alistair sent entered the throne room"Your majesty, Commander, pardon the intrusion, but I've some news that Sir Alistair and Sergeant Gareth asked me to convey."
"Do tell, Destin" Cadoc prompted.
The knight bowed"Sai and Timberain have ceased hostilities, thanks to Lady Priscilla, Sir Alistair and a group of other travelers. But I am afraid there's been some bad news as well: Ku is becoming aggressive once more under the rule of Mugen, the late King Jigo's eldest."
"The apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree, King Jigo clearly neglected to rein in his son's worst impulses while he could. Not that he would've cared about that during his days of conquest" Cadoc commented, frowning in contemplation"But surely we are far enough from Hineouma that Ku should not be too much of a problem."
"That would depend on if Mugen is satisfied with only the rest of the Hinouema clans, which I suspect is very unlikely" King Lorian stated, troubled by the news of Ku's renewed aggression"We could challenge Ku now, for I do not intend to submit to his ambition, the last thing I want is needless bloodshed. But we don't know the full extent of the Crimson Sun's objectives, either, we cannot spread ourselves too thin."
"One of the travelers I mentioned is Prince Hikari, King Jigo's other son" Destin informed them"Sir Alistair believes that he intends to thwart Mugen, so its possible we don't need to concern ourselves too much with the madman."
King Lorian nodded"Commander, send a carrier pigeon to Prince Hikari, I will arrange for some of our finest knights and mages to be at his beck and call if he requires it. Also, we'll want to monitor the mainlands for sign of Crimson Sun activity in the event that Lady Priscilla requires aid."
"I would to honored to assist" Cadoc volunteered.
"I do not have the heart to send you out at your advanced age, my friend" The king said, shaking his head"It pains me just as much to do this, but I shall have my daughter, Sabrina lead the expeditionary force I am sending out."
"The princess has certainly grown more confident, but are you certain?" Cadoc asked.
"She has mastered Sorcery and is a fine archer" The king replied"Destin" he told the messenger"Send for her at once."
The younger knight nodded and hurried to the Royal Mage guild. The guild was located close to the castle and was a small building with a conference table, chairs and a desk. Several mages were studying, among them a young woman with blue hair, green eyes, a purple dress with a white undershirt, navy blue gloves and a flowing white cape was reading up on some paperwork.
The messenger came in"Princess Sabrina, your father, the king summons you."
"I will be there right away" Sabrina stood up and accompanied the messenger back to the castle. Outside the castle, only those in the guild were aware that she's the king's daughter for security reasons. Cadoc, meanwhile had gone to send a carrier pigeon to Hikari.
The king greeted his daughter as she came in"Sabrina, is everything going well over at the guild?"
"Yes, father" Sabrina nodded, her confidence had grown over the years and had long completed her studies"What did you need me for?"
"An important mission" The king replied, then sighed tiredly"Also, I'm getting old, so I plan to retire in a month or so. In which time, I shall abdicate the throne to you, my daughter."
Sabrina was hardly surprised, but was still concerned for her father"Are you ill?"
"No, its just that my time to rule is drawing to a close" The king replied.
Sabrina nodded, understandingly, she had studied long and hard for it. No doubt her duties as queen would be rather taxing, and she'd yet to find a suitable husband"So what is the mission?" She asked.
"It grieves me to put you in any kind of danger" The king replied, hesitantly"But you will be scouring the mainlands, primarily the east, for any sign of Crimson Sun activity. Prosecutor Whiteshore is handling the investigation, but after what happened the last time Chief Prosecutor Davis sent an investigation team, she may require further assistance. The other people that Destin mentioned she is traveling with can't watch her all the time."
"Then its a security measure" Sabrina took a moment to process this"But couldn't we simply inform the authorities in Stormhail, Flamechurch and Clockbank?"
"I already sent a message to Clockbank, the mayor replied that the Clockbank Constabulary will keep an eye out" The king replied"Stormhail and Flamechurch are having issues of their own. Which is why I am sending an expeditionary force to the east continent. Alistair and Sergeant Gareth can keep an eye on affairs on the west continent. And there's one more reason we are dispatching troops to the mainlands: Ku is becoming aggressive once more, under the rule of Mugen, King Jigo's eldest son."
Sabrina frowned"But what about King Jigo? Isn't he still ruling Ku?" She had been very busy with her duties as head of the arcane corps and therefore hadn't heard any news regarding Ku.
The king sighed"King Jigo is dead. But we know that Jigo's younger son, Hikari is amassing allies to overthrow Mugen before he plunges the whole continent into war. As commander of the Arcane branch of our army, you will be permitted a small force of elite knights and mages to serve on this mission and to provide Prince Hikari with aid should he desire it."
"Very well, father. I shall marshal the Arcane Brigade and set off for the east continent" Sabrina nodded"We will remind all Solistia of our creed of justice and honor. And it might be wise to establish a front on the west continent, just in case."
"Alistair and Sergeant Gareth can handle that, I will dispatch another squad to reinforce them. This I can do without spreading our army too thin and having the knights mistaken for an invasion force" the king replied"I know I am asking a lot of you and have done so since your childhood, Sabrina. I was only strict because I believed in your potential, that your inner leadership qualities would make you an excellent successor to the throne" he added.
Sabrina nodded"I always will be grateful for your instruction, father."
"I know you are" King Lorian smiled, then said, more seriously"And furthermore, to ensure the continuation of our bloodline, we should also see about finding you a Suitor. Yet your thoughts dwell on Alistair. I know how close you were and how much you missed his company."
"Yes" Sabrina nodded"I hear he's been working hard to restore honor to his family's name after what Yolanda did. I don't even think any of the other eligible noblemen are for me."
The king frowned"It wouldn't do to be too picky, although I do understand your feelings on the matter. I married your mother because I loved her since we were children. Alistair may be a worthy choice to be the next king by marriage, although that ultimately depends on him and you. And one more thing before you go: Be careful. We don't know what other dangers to expect beyond the syndicate and a potential war with Ku. Vella needs you to return home, safely."
"Yes, father." Sabrina turned to head out of the throne room and went to the easternmost tower which served as the headquarters for the Arcane Brigade. A young man with black hair and blue robes over his orange shirt and pants was doing a bit of paperwork.
"Glenn" Sabrina addressed him.
The man looked up"Princess Sabrina" he bowed his head"How may I help you?" He knew that Sabrina is the princess due to being a part of the Vellan Royal Army.
"We are to gather an elite force of knights and other mages from our brigade and head to the east continent" Sabrina replied"Our mission is primarily reconnaissance and assisting Lady Priscilla in her investigation when it is required. Prince Hikari of Ku may also need our aid."
"Understood" Glenn nodded enthusiastically, then said"Where should we set up a camp, though?"
"We will find a spot in the Brightlands. If we ever need money during the mission, I will have some of our men find some decent side jobs if needed" Sabrina replied. Hopefully she can do this without drawing unnecessary attention.
Glenn nodded and went to rally their comrades. Sabrina waited until Glenn returned with a contingent of knights and mages. One of the mages addressed Sabtina"We're ready to go."
"Good, let's move out" Sabrina led her squadron out of the castle. On their way out of town, they had taken the liberty to buy supplies and other necessities so as to be as thoroughly prepared as possible.
The squad headed to the port. Glenn addressed Sabrina as they walked"So how will we go about our recon?"
"We'll split up and direct our attention to the regions surrounding Clockbank and Winterbloom" Sabrina replied"If the Crimson Sun intends to strike at any of those towns, we'll be ready to intercept them, hopefully. We will first contact the leaders of those towns so they do not get the wrong idea. And I plan to visit Montwise, too."
"Understood" Glenn nodded as they headed into the harbor. They paid for a ship to take them to New Delsta and set sail.
Sabrina stood close to the front of the ship, gazing at the sea, the ocean was a very pretty sight. Glenn and the rest of Sabrina's squadron stood at various other parts of the ship, interacting with the few civilians who happened to be on the same ship as them, picking up rumors and information in the process. The princess studied the map she brought with her, memorizing the layout of the east continent and trying to figure out a good spot to set up camp.
'The former village of Healeaks perhaps, but that doesn't feel right. Besides, there may be some Vagabonds saying there' she thought, continuing to study her map. She had no plans to visit Stormhail, which is under the jurisdiction of the Sacred Guard and the location of Clan Mei because of the slightly shady reputation of the Sacred Guard, no thanks to one who tried to force himself on one of the noble ladies back on Vella. Montwise seemed like an appealing place to go, on the other hand.
'Well, here's hoping this proves to be a fruitful expedition' Sabrina thought, putting her map away and continuing to look out upon the ocean.
Priscilla's group's ship eventually reached New Delsta Harbor, the group taking the time to enjoy a quick breakfast of fruit, jerky and seafood before the ship docked. They disembarked and started towards the city of New Delsta, itself.
"Once we arrive, we will want to decide which of us should go where. We each have our own affairs to attend to, after all" Hikari said as they walked"Temenos, you intend to visit Stormhail, correct?"
"Indeed, but I am also curious about the Fellson ruins near Crackridge" The cleric nodded"Maybe after we're done at Montwise, though I daresay it'll be quite a trek back to the west continent."
"I think Stormhail is where I'll find Glacis" the hunter piped up"But there are other fun places to see here, I bet." Akala just silently walked alongside Ochette, not that anyone else in the group besides the Beastling can understand him.
"I wouldn't exactly call this trip fun" Priscilla murmured as she looked at her map for a second, not that she minded traveling with everyone, but at the same time she hadn't really expected to become a leader of a group of travelers along with Prince Hikari who is the highest ranking person amongst them.
"I'll be off to Clockbank to see what I can do for the folks, there. And to visit Roque" Partitio informed them as they neared the town"But I'll meet with you all back at New Delsta, afterward."
"Father will be expecting me at Winterbloom" Throne said"So I'll be going there with Castii."
"Akala, Acta and me will go there too, then" Ochette offered.
Castii looked at the Beastling and the Thief"Thank you for coming with me."
"Its no trouble" Throne said.
"I'm going to be in New Delsta for a bit longer to gather information" Priscilla informed everyone else.
"Then I will stay in town with you and Agnea until we're ready to move on" Hikari stated"Osvald, do you intend to go on ahead to Montwise?"
"No" Osvald grunted, as much as he disliked crowds, he was still in no hurry to keep on going after Harvey"I will remain with you, Priscilla and Agnea."
Temenos smiled knowingly, despite having known the Scholar for only a short time"Because deep down, you care about our little flock, right?"
"You don't know what you are talking about" Osvald retorted. Although, admittedly, he was starting to grow fond of their group, enough to give advice and assist in battle when needed, anyway. He just wasn't much for small talk.
Priscilla didn't know if she liked being compared to a sheep or not as she kept walking"And what about you, Temenos?" She asked.
"I'll be relaxing at the inn for a bit, and to go over my notes" The cleric replied, physical exercise wasn't one of his strong points.
"Well, there's also a marvelous theater in town, I think I might go and watch a show, there" Priscilla said thoughtfully"Temenos, would you be interested?"
The Cleric nodded"I can certainly go see the show with you" He can review his notes quietly while he is at it.
As they entered the town, Agnea was in awe at the big city"Wow, so this is the Metropolis, itself."
"Its certainly much larger than my hometown" Priscilla commented.
"Mom took dad, my sister and I all round the west continent when I was little, but nothing quite like this" The dancer commented, taking in the sights as she walked around. A notice board soon caught her eye"What's this?"
Priscilla walked closer to the notice board, one particular message stood out'All for you-Dolcinaea, Superstar.'
"Superstar!?" Agnea read the notice as well and was amazed at that Dolcinaea person's fame, she looked around"The signs are everywhere, what is a Superstar like?"
"Dolcineaea must be the person who is performing in today's show" Priscilla commented"I meant to get right to gathering information, but I can afford a bit of a break. Shall we go to the theater, together?"
"Sure" Agnea smiled.
"Partitio, Castii, Ochette and I will be taking off, now. We'll see you later, perhaps" Throne told Priscilla.
"Same to you, Throne" Priscilla replied.
"Hope you have a good time" Partitio grinned.
"Thank you" Priscilla told the merchant.
As Castii's group headed out of town, Priscilla and her group headed for the theater. People were lining up to go into the theater and see the show, showing their tickets to a nearby Theater Doorman.
"Its really amazing" Agnea commented, walking toward the theater.
The Doorman stopped her"Hold on, do you have a ticket ready?"
"A Ticket?" The young dancer asked.
"You need one to get in" the attendant explained.
Agnea turned back to the others"Sure is a fun name, Ticket. Cropdale never had anything like this."
Priscilla frowned"I didn't plan on seeing a show before we came here... Tickets are hard to come buy, I imagine, judging from how popular the theater is, and how famous the local superstar must be. Tickets are also quite expensive to buy."
"Well, nothing to it but to find a ticket and then come back" Agnea said, optimistically.
"We don't know where we'd even buy one" Priscilla frowned"Let alone the fact that there are five of us."
"We'll figure something out" Agnea continued walking.
The group followed, stopping by the local tavern. A woman was standing outside, muttering to herself.
"Excuse me" Priscilla addressed the woman"Is there a problem?"
The woman looked at the group"Oh, its nothing, its just that I received a ticket, but unfortunately, I won't have time to go see the show."
Agnea looked at the woman thoughtfully, then walked up to her"Well, if its no problem, may I have the ticket? My friends and I are planning to see the show, ourselves. But I'm from a remote village and didn't think we'd need any tickets."
"Oh ho, certainly" The woman smiled, handing her ticket to Agnea.
"Thank you" Agnea smiled, then led her group back to the theater.
"Don't we still need four more tickets?" Hikari asked"There are five of us."
Priscilla thought about it"We'll come up with something."
The group returned to the Doorman. Agnea presented him with the ticket"Here you go."
"Thank you very much" The doorman accepted the ticket"The show will be starting, soon."
Agnea nodded, then asked"Could you let my friends in, too?"
The Doorman was surprised by the request"But without tickets-"
"I'm from House Whiteshore on the island of Vella, my name is Priscilla" Priscilla interrupted, this was going to take some creative thinking"Agnea is a Dancer, the rest of us are sort of acting her as bodyguards. I understand that the seats may be about full due to the show's popularity, but we can stand if we need to. And if its a matter of money, my mom would be happy to write a check, I realize that I should have ordered tickets in advance, but could you not make an exception?" She disliked lying, so she had instead resorted to a half-truth.
The doorman looked at Priscilla more closely"Hm? You look very much like one of our old regular attendees. Lady Vanessa used to occasionally frequent our theater with Lord Percival, Sir Sylas would occasionally come, himself before he disappeared."
Priscilla frowned at the memory of her so-called uncle, but shrugged it off"You knew my mother?"
"I was only a child, I would sometimes come here with my father" The Doorman replied"Lady Vanessa would sometimes perform, she was a fine Songstress in her prime. Her father was acting as her bodyguard at the time. Even though she was of the nobility, she treated both Commoners and Nobility equitably. I will make an exception for you this one time, but just this once, and don't tell the manager."
Priscilla had no time to think about these details as she headed into the theater with the rest of her group.
"Interesting to hear this about your mother" Agnea commented to Priscilla.
Priscilla shrugged"It was news to me. But then, I never really got much time to get to know my own mom while growing up, thanks to that monster, Sylas." She made it clear in her tone that she didn't want to talk about him.
"My mom was a dancer, she was a Star, herself" Agnea said"She died when I was still little."
"I see, I'm sorry to hear that" Priscilla said.
"Its okay, its thanks to her I got into dancing" Agnea smiled.
The group went into the Auditorium and took seats. Soon, a woman with blond hair and a blue dress came onstage"All of you" She addressed the audience"I was born to be a star, but thanks to you I can truly shine."
Priscilla, Agnea and everyone else listened as the blond dancer began to sing, entranced by the song and the dance she performed. As the dancer finished, Agnea stood up, amazed"She really is the greatest dancer in the land!"
Priscilla shook her head at Agnea's over-enthusiasm, but didn't say anything. She was also impressed by the woman's dance. When the show was officially over, the group headed back outside.
"Quite a performance, I must say" Temenos commented.
"I agree" Priscilla nodded.
As they exited the theater, they saw another young man standing outside, he was wearing a leather vest over his white shirt and pants and wore a cap"Man, show's over" The man sighed"And the stars are out of my reach."
Priscilla, Hikari, Osvald and Temenos walked a short way ahead of Agnea, the dancer sighed as she performed the dance moves that Dolcinaea had performed back at the stage. Hikari, Temenos and Priscilla turned to see what was up. The man in the leather outfit watched as well.
Agnea danced and sang for a moment"So that was All for you... No wonder Dolcinaea is a Superstar."
"Those were some hot moves, kid" the other man applauded.
Agea turned, flustered"Hot moves...?"
"That's right, seeing you has got me fired up, even though I missed Dolcinaea's show" The man grinned.
"And you are?" Priscilla addressed the man.
The man looked at her"Oh, my name is Gil. I wanted to see the show, but I couldn't afford a ticket. So I sneaked here to the theater, but couldn't get in. Us poor folk can't afford tickets, you see."
"I see" Priscilla frowned"Oh, my name is Priscilla, I'm from House Whiteshore on the Island of Vella."
Gil nodded"Nice to meet you."
"This town really has lots of big dreams" Agnea commented, having recovered from her earlier embarrassment.
"Yep, but dreams taste like beans" sighed Gil"I run a tavern in the Backstreets, by the way. I serve spirits and freshly ground coffee."
"Do you happen to sell information?" Priscilla asked the Bartender.
The bartender sighed"Nope, I've just been minding my own business, kinda. What were you looking for?"
"Information on a group called the Crimson Sun" The Prosecutor replied.
"Can't say I heard of them, but funnily enough, a lass called Scarlet stopped by the other day, she was seeking info herself. Didn't have much to offer, but she offered to donate to my tavern to help with my business" Gil commented"A rather fine gentleman was accompanying her. Sorry I can't help more than that, but I can offer you all a drink if you'd like."
"That sounds nice" Priscilla nodded"And thank you for telling me."
"Some coffee wouldn't hurt I suppose" Osvald grunted.
"All righty" Gill led the group to the backstreets where his tavern is. The tavern seemed a bit run-down, but otherwise was in decent shape with a bar, a few tables with only a couple of customers and a piano in one corner.
Agnea took in the smell of coffee"It sure smells good in here."
Gill smiled and offered the group cups of coffee"Here you all are, try some. I promise you won't regret it."
Priscilla, Osvald, Temenos, Hikari and Agnea each received a cup. The dancer commented"Its bittersweet."
"Basically what dreams taste like" Gill said.
"I usually prefer a bit of cream in my coffee" Priscilla shrugged"But its not too bad."
"I typically prefer it plain black" Osvald said"But to each his own."
"I couldn't agree more" Temenos said as he sipped his cup.
Gil smiled"Well I'm glad you all enjoy it."
Agnea finished her cup, then glanced at the piano"That's a beautiful piano you have, you ever play it?"
Gil sighed sadly"Montraine could, he was a famous Pianist and a master at captivating people with song. He took up tending this tavern after he retired. I was born in this town, every day was boring as the last, except when I could hear him playing the piano from the alley."
"I see, he must have been quite the Musician" Priscilla commented.
"Yep. I came here when I could, Montraine even taught me how to play the piano" Gill said"I wanted to be able to make music like him, to see people smile. So I kept on practicing, sometimes the patrons would jeer and laugh at me, but i never gave up. And so the years passed. But no one paid any mind to my music. Montraine grew old and passed away. That's when it hit me, I have no talent. I've just been selling spirits."
One of the few other patrons called over"Enough reminiscing, Gill. I'm thirsty."
The Bartender turned, annoyed"Is this going to be on your tab, too? You have to pay for it someday."
Agnea felt a twinge of sympathy for the bartender"Gil" she said"I would like to hear you play the piano."
"Sorry, but I quit" The bartender replied, sadly.
"As you should" The other tavern patron scoffed"Dreams are only good for getting you hurt."
Undeterred, Agnea asked"Well would you mind if I danced here?"
"Why would you want to do that?" Gil asked.
Agnea giggled"I just feel like it."
Gil nodded"You're more than welcome to."
Agnea smiled"Thank you. Now, if were going to put on a show, we need an audience! I'll go gather a crowd."
"Hey now, don't get too carried away" The Bartender said"I can only handle so many. Bring me any patrons you find."
"How charitable" Priscilla commented"Well, I can spare a little more extra time to watch."
"We'll wait here for you" Hikari told Agnea.
Agnea nodded and left to go find some people.
"You say your mother was a songstress" Temenos commented at Priscilla"Have you ever indulged yourself in the musical arts?"
"Not really, although sometimes I would sing to myself when I was lonely from being neglected, but mostly I just read books" Priscilla replied.
"I'm quite good with a flute myself" Hikari commented, joining the conversation.
Temenos smirked mischievously"Why don't you both ask Agnea and Gill if you can join the performance?"
Priscilla blushed brightly in embarrassment"S-surely, you jest!"
Temenos chuckled.
Hikari shook his head"It would not do to spoil Agnea's moment, it was her idea."
Gil smiled"You have quite a lively group traveling with you, Priscilla."
"I suppose you can say that" Priscilla admitted.
Soon, Agnea returned with a handful of people, having asked them to come and watch. The dancer walked over to Gil"Well, I got as many folks to come as I could."
"You gathered quite the crowd, plus the handful of people who came in with you" Gil commented.
The crowd started to take their seats as Agnea prepared to put on her show. Priscilla, Hikari, Osvald and Temenos quietly watched the performance with everyone else, Hikari and Priscilla were especially amazed.
As soon as Agnea finished her dance routine, Gil clapped along with everyone in the audience"I knew it, your move really are hot!" He exclaimed"Truth be told, I was hoping you'd dance for them too."
Agnea beamed as she asked"Say Gi, would you mind if I danced here for a while?"
"Not at all" Gill replied"But I wouldn't be able to pay you for it..."
"I don't mind at all!" Agnea assured him"Let the dance continue!"
"I think we're gonna be here for a while" Priscilla commented to Hikari"You okay with that?"
"Its quite all right" Hikari replied.
"Fine by me" Temenos said, he was enjoying the performance as much as everyone else.
Soon, evening came, prompting the group to go to the inn for the evening. Priscilla went to the inn to relax while everyone else went to gather information or find some part-time work to earn some extra leaves except for Osvald who elected to spend quiet time reading his books.
Sabrina's ship landed after a couple of days, the retinue of mages and knights from Vella's Arcane Brigade disembarking and heading into town. Glenn looked around the city"Sure is a big place."
"Not too surprising" Sabrina replied as she walked towards the main part of town. As she walked past the backstreets, a certain dancer with golden brown hair came rushing out of the tavern, irritated about something.
"What's going on?" Sabrina asked, curious.
The dancer turned around"Oh, a friend of mine was attacked, I'm about to go give the meanie who did it a piece of my mind. Who are you?"
"My name is Sabrina. Though this is none of my affair and I have my own business to attend to, I can help you" Sabrina offered.
"Thank you, but I have some other friends at the inn, I was going to ask for their help before going to the theater" Agnea replied"But could you keep Gil safe until I deal with the Theater Manager? You all look pretty tough. Gil is running the tavern I just came out of."
Glenn sighed"We're on an important mission of our own, but it would be bad form to ignore a request from a young lady who is in need I suppose. My name is Glenn."
"I'm Agnea. Well, I'm in a hurry" the dancer said before continuing to the inn.
Sabrina didn't know the entire scope of what went on, but it sounded like there was an altercation between this Gil individual and the Theater Manager who Agnea is going to confront, but it was best to try to keep things from escalating"Well, you heard her request. Most of you wait for me outside town while two of you go check on the tavern. Glenn, come with me."
"Yes, my lady" Glenn replied.
Agnea entered the inn and raced to the room Priscilla is staying in"Priscilla!" She knocked.
"Is something wrong?" The Prosecutor replied as she answered.
"Gill's tavern was attacked, he was hurt!" Agnea explained"They were attacked by the Theater Manager. I'm going to give the manager a piece of my mind, and I would like you, Temenos and Hikari to come with me for support."
Priscilla clenched her hand"The manager sounds like he is a petty criminal. All right, wait outside for us. I don't know if what you said is true, but I will investigate."
Agnea nodded and went outside to wait. Sabrina and Glenn came up to her.
"So what's the story?" Sabrina asked"I have some of my men making sure everything is all right."
"I started working at Gil's tavern for a while as a dancer" Agnea replied"I don't know the whole story, but I want to make sure that Gil is safe from the person who attacked him."
Sabrina was outraged at the injustice that she was informed of"And the other friends you mentioned?"
"They'll be right out, Hikari is a prince and a warrior, and Priscilla told me she is a Prosecutor" Agnea replied.
Inside the inn, Priscilla had just informed Temenos and went to Hikari's room, the prince was reading a letter that was sent by the king of Vella. Priscilla walked over"Pardon me, but we're needed. Gil's tavern was reportedly attacked, I plan to help Agnea to investigate and apprehend the assailant if needed."
"What? Why was Gil attacked?" Hikari asked.
"I have no idea, but we're headed for the theater" The prosecutor replied.
Hikari nodded and went with her to get Osvald before meeting back up with the others. Sabrina greeted Priscilla as she came out"Prosecutor Whiteshore, how is the investigation?"
"Still trying to get information" Priscilla replied"Oh, and you must be...?"
"Sabrina" Sabrina didn't want people knowing she is a princess in case the Crimson Sun is lurking"I was sent to this continent on a mission from his majesty. But right now, I understand there is trouble in this town. I'm going to alert the authorities if needed."
"That won't be necessary, its a fairly straightforward case, I just need to investigate" Priscilla replied.
One of Sabrina's soldiers returned"Lady Sabrina, the tavern was indeed ransacked recently, our Apothecary is treating Gil so he should be fine."
"Good to hear" Sabrina nodded, relieved.
"Thank goodness" Agnea commented, she had been worried about Gil's injury.
"Aren't you already undertaking a case?" Osvald asked Priscilla, referring to the Crimson Sun"Hikari, Agnea and I can deal with this."
"Normally I make a point to finish one case before taking another, but I can't bring myself to ignore this" Priscilla replied"Agnea, you may want to remain outside the theater for your safety."
"I'm going, I want to give the manager a piece of my mind" Agnea replied, adamantly.
Priscilla thought about it"Very well, let's go, then."
"I will wait outside" Sabrina said"It shouldn't take many people to apprehend a lone assailant."
Priscilla nodded and accompanied Agnea, Hikari, Temenos and Osvald back to the theater. The Doorman stood near the entrance, Priscilla pulled out her Prosecutor's Badge"I heard a serious allegation, you are to permit me to ask your manger some questions."
The Doorman paled"You can't-"
"I only told you as a formality" Priscilla snapped as Agnea rushed inside"Now get out of my way before I have to charge you with interfering with an official investigation."
The doorman reluctantly stood aside to let the rest of the group pass. Priscilla put her badge away and followed Agnea inside. The group made their way through the seemingly empty theater.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought that the king of Vella has a terrible habit of getting nosy in affairs not his own" Hikari commented.
"Yes, well" Priscilla shrugged"We've always prided ourselves on justice and honor. King Lorian is a good ruler, even if he does tend to get a bit overzealous."
The group headed through the theater's interior, eventually making their way onto the stage where a portly man with blond hair, a mustache and a dark suit stood. Agnea walked forward, glaring at the man"You're the one who attacked Gil and the others, aren't you?"
The portly theater manager turned"You must be their house dancer" he commented"Here to get a real job?"
"No, I want to talk to you" Agnea replied, shaking her head.
"You don't deny it?" Priscilla asked the theater owner"What Agnea told me is true, then."
The portly man scoffed"I merely gave'em what they deserve for imitating my fine theater. New Delsta simply has no need for two such establishments, the patrons are rightfully mine! Anyone who wants entertainment need not look further than where we stand."
"You'll regret taking away people's fun" Agnea told him.
"The only "fun" the town needs lies in these halls" The manager laughed"The tickets may be beyond the means of the rabble-"
"But they still have Montraine's Tavern" Agnea interrupted"Its a place of hope for them, I want Gil to be able to dream again. So promise me you won't lay another finger on that tavern. I won't let until you do."
"How dare you speak to me like that!" The manager seethed"I will swat you like the annoying flies you all are!"
"Are you sure you want to do that? With Agnea and Gil's testimonies, I can send you to prison if they press charge" Priscilla pointed out"I don't care at the moment that Vella has no authority here, I have enough information and witnesses to put your greedy, fat behind behind bars if I inform the proper authorities!"
The infuriated manager lunged at Priscilla with a baton, the Prosecutor parried it with her staff. Temenos swatted at La'Mani with his own staff, driving the portly man back while Osvald pelted the manager with Fireballs.
La'Mani signaled a couple of Troupe Dancers to come back him up before rushing at Temenos, only to get knocked back by a Ruinous Kick, courtesy of Agnea. Osvald blasted the trope dancers with Fire as they attempted to attack him. Frustrated, La'Mani unleashed Windy Minuet, blasting the group back. Temenos healed his group while Hikari evaded a doubt slap attack from the portly man, countering with a slash, which barely nicked him.
"That's it" La'Mani called a troupe dancer and a troupe musician onto the stage. Osvald blasted the musician with thunder while the troupe dancer tried to attack Agnea, only for Priscilla to knock the Troupe Dancer down with her staff. La'Mani attempted to attack Priscilla with his Baton, only for Agnea and jab at him with her dagger. La'mani scowled and attempted to cast a gust of wind at the group, driving them back a bit.
"You annoy me" Hikari flared up as his body became briefly engulfed in shadow. La'Mani seemed terrified, but rushed at Hikari anyway, only for the warrior to drive him back with a jab of his spear. Agnea jumped and landed with a powerful kick on the portly man, knocking him to the ground.
Priscilla walked towards their subdued enemy"Its over."
La'Mani gasped, glaring at the group"Why you-"
"That's quite enough!" A familiar voice said as a certain blond woman in a blue dress came from backstage. Accompanying her was another woman, this one was muscular and had dark hair in addition to a black garb.
La'mani got up, looking at the newcomers"Madam Dolcinaea!"
The veteran dancer walked over"I was wondering what the commotion was about. You are to leave that little tavern alone, do you understand?" she spoke sternly.
Priscilla looked at Dolcinaea"With all due respect, miss, that man has assaulted an innocent man for no reason than to monopolize the entertainment industry in the town. I was all for having him serve prison time. I'm a Prosecutor."
"That won't be necessary" Dolcinaea told her, haughtily"Besides, I doubt that he would come quietly.."
As Hikari pulled himself together so as to not needlessly kill anyone, he wondered for a second just how much clout the blond dancer had.
The portly man sweat-dropped"But my lady-"
"Need I remind you who I am?" Dolcinaea shook her head, frowning at the manager"I am Dolcinaea Luciel, Continental Superstar! When I dance, the realm rejoices. None can compare to my splendor. Now, promise this young woman you won't harm that tavern ever again. Because I refuse to perform at a theater owned by such a shameful man" she finished, scathingly.
'So she's vain and a blackmailer' Priscilla thought to herself, but didn't say out loud. Dolcinaea was clearly not doing it out of malice, but she clearly had her own reason for protecting Montraine's Tavern from that greedy theater owner.
La'mani sputtered in shock, but relented"Very well... I promise."
The blond dancer nodded her approval"That settles that, then."
Agnea walked over to the older dancer"Dolcinaea..."
"That dress and hairpin are lovely on you, dear" Dolcinaea complimented her.
"Its my dream to become a star, just like you" Agnea said, admiration evident in her tone.
"Is that so?" Dolcinaea smirked"Then so you know... The road to stardom is laden with thorns."
Priscilla frowned at La'mani"Consider this a warning, I won't be so charitable next time." She then followed her group out of the theater.
Gil, Sabrina and a few bar patrons met up with them outside.
"Kid! I was worried, so we came looking" Gil greeted Agnea, relieved that she's safe.
Agnea smiled"Thank you... All of you."
"The culprit has been dealt with, then? I'm surprised that you hadn't arrested him, Prosecutor" Sabrina told Priscilla.
The Prosecutor shrugged"Well, I don't think he's going to be trying anything funny for a good long while. Besides, I still have bigger fish to fry. And nobody really got hurt."
Sabrina nodded"Lord Percival was a just, charitable man like you. He would've done the same thing" she commented.
"I try" Priscilla said.
"Well, now the tavern is safe" Agnea beamed"Dolcinaea made that manager promise not to hurt you guys anymore" she told Gill and the tavern patrons.
One of the patrons widened his eyes in surprise"D-Dolcinaea did that for us!?"
Agnea nodded, then looked at Gil"So how is your face?"
"It'll take more than that to do me in, my partner is alive and well, too" Gil smiled.
"Your partner?" Agnea asked, confused.
"Come with me" Gil led the group back to the tavern. Glenn and the two other Arcane Brigade members had already left to wait for Sabrina outside town. Agnea was happy to see that the damage had been repaired when they returned"You fixed your piano, thank goodness! We should do another show to celebrate."
The Bartender just silently stood there for a moment before replying"You can't stay in a place like this, kid. There is a whole wide world that could use some cheer like yours."
"Gil..." Agnea was at a loss for words.
"From here on, the guys here and I will put on shows together" Gil smiled"To try to bring whatever hope we can to this town."
"Good for you" Priscilla commented.
Agnea smiled"Thank you, Gil."
"That's our line" The bartender smiled"You helped us to remember something important. Here's a little something as a token of our gratitude."
As Gil started to play music again, Agnea obliged the patrons and her friends with one last dance. After a long rest at the inn once the show was over, Agnea's group and Gil and his patrons went to the east exit from town.
One patron smiled"Don't be a stranger now, Agnea. Feel free to come dance at our tavern again, anytime."
Agnea bowed her head"Thank you, everyone."
Gil handed some sheet music over"Here, a little parting gift for you."
"Sheet music?" Agnea asked as she received the paper.
Gil nodded"I call it the Song of Hope. Its what we played together, last night. Its not much, but I hope you'll get some use out of it."
"Are you sure, Gil?" The dancer asked"I mean... This song..."
"Its the least I can give you after what you gave all of us" Gil smiled.
"Thank you so much, Gil" Agnea smiled"I can feel hope in every note. You're truly amazing."
Gil shrugged"But unfortunately, the words wouldn't come to me, its just the notes."
"Well would you mind if I wrote them? I can find some words along my journey" Agnea said, optimistically.
"I hope you do" Gil nodded"I'd love to hear it when its finished. So, what did you feel when you came to this town?" he asked.
Agnea smiled"The worth of a dream, I want to put those feelings into words, to experience all sorts of things on this journey and turn them into music. And I want to sing and dance to this song and bring smiles to everyone's faces."
"I know you can do it" Gil said"You're going to be a star, someday."
"I could say the same thing about you, Gil" Agnea smiled, turning to go, stopping to wave good-bye to her new friend before joining the others as they headed out of town.
Hikari turned to the dancer"I must admit, I was quite entranced whenever I saw you dance. Was this what Master Gil meant when he said you were hot?"
"Huh?" Agnea shrugged"I think that's just something Gil likes to say."
"Perhaps" the swordsman said thoughtfully"Nevertheless, I think I understand why he was so attached to that word" he then smiled slightly"Agnea, your dance moves are hot."
"Hearing you say that makes my cheeks feel hot" Agnea flushed.
Temenos turned to look back at them"Do you two need a room?"
"Temenos!" Agnea squeaked, embarrassed.
Osvald simply shook his head at the group's antics as they walked.
"Seriously though, you almost totally flipped during our fight with that theater manager back there" Agnea commented.
Hikari paused, remembering when he wielded the shadow power"Oh that... Its because of the curse on my family's bloodline, the curse of Clan Ku."
"The curse of Clan Ku?" Priscilla asked, curious"What is it about?"
"Its difficult to explain" Hikari admitted"For as long as I can recall, there were instances where I hear a voice in my head, compelling me to commit needless acts of bloodshed and violence. My father had it, and Mugen has it. It takes a strong will and great strength of character to fight it."
Priscilla paled"Ah, this reminds me... There was a passage in an old book in Vella about the Archmage D'arqest. There wasn't much about him, only that he is a bitter enemy of the Lumina Clan."
"But there shouldn't be anything to worry about if he lived a long time ago, right?" Agnea asked.
"I presume so" Hikari said as he and the others kept walking outside of town where Sabrina's squadron waited.
How was it? I hope this chapter was enjoyable, especially Sabrina's segment. I couldn't help but do a Hikari/Agnea moment toward the end. As for Glenn, he won't be around that much, since he's just a minor character. Sabrina/Alistair and Priscilla/Temenos are still going to be the primary pairings, but I might end up with an idea for Hikari/Agnea.
