Chuck and Sarah get started on their tasks in ancient Egypt…

Chuck vs Egypt

Chapter 6

Sarah looked at her first interviewee of the day. Horus's beautiful wife, Hathor. A friendly Ennead who Looked quite regal when she first joined Sarah, but then relaxed into the chair opposite her and smiled.

Hathor was interesting. She didn't have the same belief in Osiris that her husband had. She agreed that Osiris would make a great overseer covering the whole of Egypt, and he did have the trust of others, but she could also see him have an affair.

"Why'd you think that?" Sarah asked.

Hathor looked at her. "Well, for one thing, I saw how he looked at you."

Sarah was surprised. "I noticed. I've suffered that all my adult life, but I didn't realize others saw."

"I might be more observant than most," Hathor replied. "Besides, he made a pass at me."

Sarah's jaw dropped. "When was this?"

"Oh, a few centuries ago."

That was a reminder that they lived longer than humans. "Are you all immortal?"

Hathor shook her head. "No, we're not. We just live much longer than humans."

"Why did you come here?"

"Our planet was dying. We left to survive."

"How many of you?"

"About five-hundred came here. Not all stayed in Egypt. Similar numbers went in other directions. I do not know how they fared."

This was a lot to take in, and not relevant to her investigation, so she focused on that. "So, Set could be right about Osiris sleeping with Nephthys?"

"Quite likely," Hathor replied.

"But no one believes him," Sarah stated.

"None of the men do, and probably many women are the same. Some women will, but may be hopeful that Osiris turns his attention to them."

Sarah frowned. "Is he that desirable?"

Hathor gave her a flat look as if to convey that Sarah shouldn't need to ask. "He has a position of power. A lot of women are drawn to that."

Sarah knew that of women in her time. "But not you. Is that because Horus has power too?"

Hathor laughed. "Horus does, but not as much as Osiris. I love him and nothing could entice me away." She looked at Sarah. "Much like you and Chuck."

That obviously flustered Sarah. "We're not-"

Hathor stopped her spiraling. "You may not have admitted it to yourselves, but I can see it in you."

Sarah had to get them back to the investigation. "So, Nephthys. Why was she not happy with Set, her husband?"

Hathor sighed. "I think she was probably jealous of Aset having Osiris; that she thought she should have him. Set was second best. Rumor used to be that Set was impotent, too."

"The myths and legends state that Anubis is Set's son," Sarah said.

Hathor laughed. "And you believe these legends?"

Sarah looked at her. "I don't, but the Egyptians used to. Part of their religion."

Hathor contemplated that for a few moments. "And what of this story you're capturing?"

Sarah didn't like that question. "My investigation will be the collation of evidence and the views of all of you. It will be supplemented by whatever Chuck finds before we draw any conclusions. It will not be a 'story' but the facts and will resolve this issue."

Hathor nodded. "You're very confident in your abilities."

"I've always been very successful at finding the truth," Sarah replied.

"Hence you being chosen for the independent assessment."

Sarah asked the question that should already have been answered. "How were we selected? How did you find us all that way off in the future? How were our skills known?"

"You'd have to ask Thoth. He's the inventor of the devices we depend on."

Sarah checked when she had him scheduled. He was lower in the list because he was currently training Chuck.

Hathor returned to the subject of Nephthys and Osiris. "Osiris is hungry for more power. He has the same as Set, power wise, but he wants more. Set was content with what he had. I suspect getting together would suit both his and Nephthys's purposes. She was probably additionally drawn to his hunger, maybe overcoming her better judgment. If she was, that is."

Sarah mentioned what she'd heard, "She's left Egypt. Away from any of the power. Away from both of them."

"Exiled for making a mistake?" Hathor suggested. She then sighed. "She's a confusing woman. Although Set would've liked to have children, she wasn't bothered."

Sarah remembered what she wanted to ask this woman and saw this as an opportunity. "If she didn't want children, did she use contraception? I assume you have that."

Hathor looked at her and carefully said, "We used to use contraction on our planet, and on the journey here, but not since arriving. It seems that we cannot conceive here. Many have tried. Thoth recently discovered why, but not all know the reason."

Sarah was shocked. This was the first she'd heard about their sterility. "But you could have children before."

Hathor nodded. "We could and some of us did on the journey here. Horus and I did, but others now regret not doing so." She held Sarah's gaze. "You'll find no young Ennead here. Thoth would be best to explain why. As I say, not everyone knows the reason. Some may not know, even now. There certainly has been no conception since landing. When the children conceived on board die, the Ennead here will be no more."

Sarah was stunned. She was saddened by their loss, but also that she and Chuck would get no help, selfish though that was, "No contraceptives," she muttered to herself.

She was obviously louder than she thought. Hathor visibly noticed it, but said nothing.

Sarah had to get them back on topic. "Do you know what Nephthys is doing now?"

"I understand she's seen as an important goddess to some other people now. Maybe that'll satisfy her."

Sarah and Hathor continued for another hour, covering the woman's opinion of Set and his behavior, including the likelihood of the accusations, both at him and from him. Hathor was not convinced of any of them.

"Thank you for your time, Hathor," Sarah eventually said.

"I hope you find the truth," Hathor said. "Even if we don't like it." Before she left Sarah, Hathor added, "And I hope the other truth makes you happy."

Sarah guessed what she meant, but had to ask, "The other truth?"

"Between you and Chuck." Hathor walked out.

Sarah should be reviewing what she'd learnt from Hathor, but found herself thinking about Chuck again. "Damn him!" She hoped that what he found helped them because currently he was far more of a distraction than help, even if a distraction she really wanted.

Thoth had been tutoring Chuck for most of the morning when one of the female Ennead came to see him. Thoth walked to the other side of the room to talk with her. They occasionally looked over at Chuck, so it was obvious that they were talking about him. When she left, Chuck asked what they'd been discussing.

"Your fertility," Thoth said. "It seems your wife is concerned."

Chuck flushed. He held off saying that Sarah and he weren't married because he wanted to know more. "And does she have to be?"

"Although your body is physically here, it is also in the future. I do not know if you can conceive here. It is not something I've considered. We can't here, so the thought has never occurred to me."

"You can't?" Chuck asked.

"The crystals that we used to bring you here were from the engines of our spacecraft. They were released when we landed, crash landed actually. Exposure to them made us infertile, so, thinking about it now, I suspect that it will have had the same effect on you. If you don't go back to your bodies in your time, I'm afraid you cannot have children here."

"But if we return?" Chuck asked.

"The bodies you return to will be in exactly the state you left, so as fertile, or not, as you were there."

He and Sarah certainly hadn't talked about this, but Chuck knew he wanted children and found he really wanted them with her. He breathed a sigh of relief.

He also realized that there was nothing stopping them from having sex while here. This was something he definitely wanted to discuss with Sarah.

Surprisingly, after just a morning of tutoring, Thoth said, "After lunch, I have a test system for you. You will try to hack into it. There are firewalls, security traps just like the real thing, an email system within it, and four secure file locations."

"You think I know enough already?" Chuck asked dubiously.

"This will test that. If you fail, we'll focus on what stopped you."

Chuck tried to marshal his thoughts as he ate lunch.

"You'll have to crack multiple blocks, some simultaneously," Thoth told him.

Chuck nodded. "I realize that. I'm fast normally, but I may not be here."

Thoth said, "Practice makes perfect."

It was weird hearing a phase used back in the twenty-first century.

After they finished lunch, Thoth led him to a different room. There was a computer set up. "Unlike reality, the screens in front of you will light up red if you fail at one of the locations. They will go yellow first and green once you've passed them. If one goes back to yellow later, it's becoming a threat again and you'll have to overcome it again."

Chuck nodded his understanding.

Thoth left the room and Chuck sat down. He flexed his fingers and got started.

He got through three of the seven layers first time before becoming overwhelmed with the defenses. It felt like monsters with fangs closed in on him before six red lights showed on the screens. It reminded him of games from his own time.

Thoth walked back in. "You weren't fast enough with some and completely misunderstood one, but that I will explain."

Chuck described the dragon images. Thoth chuckled. "Subliminal images released against a cyber attacker. Intended to further the disorientation and ensure failure. I had forgotten about that. I can implant the way to overcome that and train you how to use it."

The latter occupied part of the afternoon and then they reviewed Chuck's misunderstood block and then his main failure. "You'll have to keep practicing to speed up," Thoth said.

Before ending for the day, Chuck ran another test. It wasn't exactly the same, but he thought he was only beaten because he wasn't fast enough this time. Slightly faster, but not enough. The dragons appeared near the end, but he just swept them aside. Fifteen blocks stopped him this time.

"Better, but you'll have to keep practicing," Thoth told him.

Chuck headed back to their residence, which he had started thinking of as home. He needed to rest, eat, see the woman he was definitely falling in love with, and sleep.

Sarah's next session was with Sobek. She knew of him as the crocodile god. He was associated with healing and, in the mythology, worked with Isis to bring the deceased Osiris back to life after Set killed him.

Sobek didn't sit on entry. He had his knuckles pressed against the table top and he leaned rather aggressively toward Sarah. She didn't move, being used to men like this. A frown appeared on his brow, obviously puzzled, but he growled, "You will not accuse Set of anything."

She smiled sweetly, further confusing him. "Are you trying to intimidate me?"

That obviously threw him completely. "Are you too stupid to understand that?" he snarled.

She leaned forward, getting her face close to his. She became the Ice Queen, her eyes changed, seeming to freeze over, a piercing, ice-blue now. Her pen tip, suddenly, under his chin, threatening to enter his neck.

"You don't intimidate me because I'm the one in control here," she hissed.

His eyes widened. She knew hers were chilling, but the pen was a definite danger to him. He clearly realized that any movement could be deadly. He looked at her showing something he probably never felt, fear.

"Is your intimidation reserved for human females or women in general?" she said.

Talking would move his jaw, and therefore the pen would at least dig in. He stayed silent. He didn't seem to know what to do.

She pulled the pen away and sat back. "Sit down," she said.

He did. "How?"

"I've met many aggressive men in my time. They don't intimidate me." Her eyes remained icy. "I can handle them. In fact, I intimidate them."

"B- but-"

She smiled coldly, which clearly affected him. "But you're a god? Humans are supposed to be frightened? Not me, mister."

"Obviously," he replied drily.

"Let's start afresh," she said, easing back on the coldness.

Sobek sat back. "I'm obviously one of Set's friends and I think Osiris is the evil one here."

Sarah almost smirked, but held it in. "Tell me your history with both men."

Sobek sat quietly for a couple of moments before starting. "I knew Set on our home planet. We became friends while young. I wasn't important like he and his family were, but we shared a love of sport." He smiled to himself. "Particularly javelin and wrestling."

"Who was better?" she asked.

"He was at javelin, and I was at wrestling. We were equally fast at sprinting, but he was better at long distances." He was obviously reminiscing about happy times.

"As we got older, we moved on to hand weapons. Lasers and phaxiers became the ones to compete with."

"Phaxiers?" she asked, never having heard of these.

"Like lasers, but more deadly. You could eliminate a rock at one hundred lengths." She frowned and he added, "A length is about my height."

She used the Star Trek name, "Phasers."

He shrugged. "Set and I were about equal at these. He sometimes won, and other times I did. It kept us competing."

"Do you still compete here?"

Sobek looked sad. "We mostly stopped when he married. That was a long time ago."

"Mostly?"

"After arriving here, we couldn't use either of those weapons where humans could see us. We have cloaking on our flyers and head out into the desert, well away from anyone, but only very rarely." He paused. "Until recently."

She raised a brow.

He sighed. "Set is worried that Osiris is going to either attack him or challenge him to a laser duel."

That took her by surprise. "Dueling? Here in these times?"

He looked at her for a moment. "You have that in your time?"

"With pistols, an equivalent to your weapons, it started about four hundred years before my time."

"It is an honorable way, but some, like Osiris, only do it if he is sure he can win. That's not honorable."

"And he thinks he can win?" she asked.

"Osiris was always good and still practices regularly. He would be confident if he knew that Set's practice has lapsed."

Sarah considered this for a moment. "So, you think Osiris is the problem here?"

He snorted. "Of course he is. He always has been. Screwing Nephthys is just the latest of the women he's taken. He'd probably announce them all as conquests if he wasn't frightened of Aset."

"He's frightened of his wife?" That was a new angle.

Sobek nodded. "If she walked out on him, he'd lose all credibility, and a lot of support."

Sarah asked the obvious question, "Why doesn't she?"

"You'd have to ask her that."

Sarah huffed, but stated, "I want your opinion."

He thought for a second or two. "Maybe she'd lose standing, too. They're a power couple together."

"Interesting," Sarah mused. "So, she turns the other eye?"

"I've not heard that phrase, but if you mean she ignores his indiscretions, then I guess so."

"Set threatened to kill him," she said.

Sobek shrugged. "We say a lot of things when angry."

Sarah thought of her parents and their awful fights. Some things she heard were terrible.

"Heat of the moment," she muttered.

Sobek looked at her strangely. "Another phrase from your time? Evocative. I can guess the meaning."

She spent the next half hour quizzing him on how Set reacted to threats and finished with whether this was any different.

"I think your wife having sex with someone else would be very different from threats," he said drily.

"And your own wife is?" she asked, as she hadn't before.

"Renenutet," he replied. He narrowed his eyes. "And she is totally faithful."

"In the myths she has a child with Geb," Sarah said to test him.

He laughed. "Neither would do that. Geb is, and has always been besotted by his wife. Renenutet and I are the same."

"But what if she strayed?" Sarah pushed.

"Strayed? You mean slept with another?" Sarah nodded. After a pause, he replied, "I'd be like Set." He fell silent for a while, then added, "I don't think I'd get over it."

They finished shortly after. Sobek was quite morose as he left. Sarah felt guilty for pushing him like that. It reminded her of going too far in one of her interrogations in the FBI. She'd been reprimanded back then.

Sarah's final interviewee was one of the main gods of the Karnak region. She remembered this from the visit to the temple. She would interview the other main one the following day.

Mut was stunningly beautiful, but that was no surprise. Sarah was feeling completely overshadowed by these female Ennead. It was an unusual feeling. The only reason it caused any discomfort was the worry that Chuck could stop focusing on her. Thinking of his self-doubt, she wondered if that was part of his problem. She would definitely make Chuck know he was the only one here that interested her.

Focusing back on Mut, Sarah remembered that In the Karnak temple she was always topless, but here she was clothed much as Sarah was. She caught Sarah's glance and laughed. "I don't always have my breasts out!"

Sarah blushed and looked into the woman's green eyes. "You do in the carvings."

Mut sobered up. "Egyptians seem to like depicting their gods topless, whether men or women. It's how they often dress themselves and I think it makes them feel less threatened with us like that."

"You often have animal heads, though. That's pretty threatening."

Mut smiled. "I'm not sure where that came from. I suspect it was when Set got drunk and used one of Thoth's transmuters to make his head look like that of a beast from our planet. Maybe a human saw him."

"Set got drunk?" Sarah focused on that for now.

Mut looked at her. "We all do sometimes. Don't you?"

Sarah nodded but didn't want to think of the pranks she and Carina used to get up to.

"To the Egyptians we became known as beings who could walk with animal heads. I seem to have a few, but mainly a vulture. It's not very pleasant to be seen like that."

"Better as a woman with her tits out?" Sarah teased.

Mut laughed. "Really?" She pulled her top down, poking her breasts toward Sarah. Sarah's shocked expression made her laugh more. Covering up again, she said, "We're not here to talk about my tits, though."

Sarah laughed. "I like you."

Mut smiled at her. "The feeling's mutual, Sarah."

Sarah resisted the temptation to pull her top down and started the interview proper. "What do you think of Set's claims?"

Mut tilted her head. "About his wife or the attacks?"

"Start with the former," Sarah replied.

"I can believe it of Osiris. Much as I like him and Aset as a couple, he has a roaming eye."

"Has he… approached you?"

Mut snorted. "Approached, propositioned, even groped when I least expected it."

"Were you already with Amun?"

Mut nodded. "My husband and I have been together for a long, long time. And before you ask, we're still very much in love with each other."

"You two and your son, Khonsu, are known as the patrons of Thebes."

Mut smiled. "This is where we live and support the people. Our son was born before we arrived on this planet."

"We're in your home city, then?"

Mut nodded. "You are."

"So, you think Osiris and Nephthys may have slept together?"

"I never saw them together, which was surprising in itself. Maybe that was because they'd not be able to control themselves and others would see."

"Has Aset said anything about it?" Sarah asked.

Mut's lips tightened before she replied, "She hasn't spoken much since this whole thing started, but she's always been far too tolerant of his ways."

"Why?"

She got the same response as she had from Sobek. "Ask her."

Sarah sighed and moved onto the other topic. "And Set's claims of Osiris threatening to attack in some way?"

"That's less likely. Osiris has always been ambitious, wanting more power, but I doubt he would make a move. It wouldn't go down well with any of us, but certainly not Geb."

"But a personal attack. Or a duel?"

Mut's eyes widened. "A duel? Yes, he might do that in response to Set's accusations."

"Who'd win?" Sarah asked.

"That's hard to say. Maybe neither. Both could die."

Mut was unsettled after that. They continued their discussion for another half hour but the woman struggled to focus much. She didn't seem like the happy, exuberant woman from the start of the interview. Sarah wanted to correct that and thought of a way.

"Let's finish as we started," she said, and she pulled her top down. Mut was surprised, but grinned. "Sorry they're not as large as yours."

Mut laughed. "I bet your man isn't complaining."

Chuck hadn't complained. In fact, he'd liked them. She covered quickly, feeling the flush rising.

"Thank you for lightening the mood, Sarah. I really do like you and wish you luck with your endeavors here. You and the man who likes your breasts!" She walked out chuckling.

Sarah thought about that man. They didn't need condoms to enjoy each other's bodies.

It was time to go. She'd discuss things with Chuck when they were together. What she'd learned and what she'd decided.

When Sarah walked in, Chuck was sitting quietly, looking down. An air of despondency filled the room.

"S'up?" she asked.

He looked up and his melancholic expression lifted. His hazel eyes seemed to bore into her soul. She swallowed. They definitely needed that talk.

Then, his expression changed again. "Thoth started testing me today," he said.

She sat beside him and clasped his hands in hers. She didn't say anything.

"I failed, of course. I expected that, but it's still a blow to someone who was… is… so good back home."

She brushed the back of the fingers of one hand down his cheek. "You'll get there."

"Probably, but I feel so useless right now."

"Let me tell you about my day and… what I think we should do." She felt nervous, which was stupid. He was as desperate as she was.

She started with her interview with Sobek. Out of order, but she wanted to get this one out of the way first.

He didn't speak until she mentioned her reaction to Sobek's stance. "You threatened him with your pen?" Chuck shook his head. "You're such a badass."

That surprised her but it wasn't a bad comment. She leaned toward him, batted her eyelids and cooed, "You don't see me as a sweet little thing, then?"

He surprised her with his response. "Sensual and alluring rather than sweet, but I've always known you and Zondra to be badass FBI agents." After a pause, he added, "And I've seen the scars that prove you've handled situations that I wish you hadn't experienced." She hadn't expected that last comment. He added, "On your stomach and shoulder." She must've looked confused and he added, "I'm observant. I notice things."

She snorted. "I thought you were just noticing my breasts."

He smiled. "I definitely noticed those, but I took in everything I saw."

She placed her hands on his chest. "And you liked what you saw, didn't you?" she purred.

He pulled her closer for a kiss. "Every inch."

They did kiss, but Sarah had to push away before it went too far. She had more to tell, but that delicious shiver reminded her how she felt about Chuck Bartowski.

She said, "Sobek settled down after that and I learned about Set and weapons. And dueling. They do that here. Set is now practicing because he thinks Osiris may challenge him."

Chuck's eyes widened. "Wow!"

"I learned from both Hathor and Mut that Osiris is thirsty for more power, but also has a wandering eye," she started.

Chuck narrowed his eyes. "Was he eying you up?" he asked. It seemed protective, but hearing him say it didn't feel unpleasant to Sarah.

She nodded. "He was, but apparently he's known for that."

He avoided the path she thought he might take. "What does his wife think of that?"

"I keep getting told to ask her," she snarled. "And I will."

"Is that the way to interview suspect's wives?"

She was surprised by that question. "I wouldn't just bluntly ask it," she replied and then thought about her blunt questions today. "He also has wandering hands. Both of the women I talked to thought he probably had screwed Set's wife."

"Bastard!"

He seemed more bothered by this than he should be. She suspected she knew why that was. "Are you thinking about Bryce?" She hated bringing him up.

"If this is true, it's just like Jill and Bryce," he snarled, confirming her suspicions..

She had to move on, so she covered the other information about Nephthys. Chuck seemed really unsettled by this. She raised a brow to prompt him to speak.

"That feels like Jill, as well. I wasn't good enough and she wanted more, which Bryce could give her," he confessed.

Sarah cupped his cheeks and made him look at her. "I think you're good enough for me, Chuck." She kissed him tenderly. His hands found her waist and he held onto her. They stayed like that for quite a while.

Resting their foreheads together, she said, "I also asked about protection."

"Are we at risk?" he asked, pulling away, looking worried..

She smiled. "From having babies."

"Oh."

"Hathor basically told me they don't need contraception because they're all sterile. Not all of them know this for sure, but it must be obvious."

"She must've been the one who came and talked to Thoth. He told me about them being exposed to the crystals used in their spacecraft's engine when they crashed."

"Oh, so that's the reason," she said.

"He also said we wouldn't be able to conceive here due to the crystals being reused in the time travel machine."

She was shocked. She'd never thought of having children, but to have the possibility removed by being brought here angered her. "Damn them!"

"Your body back in our time is unaffected, so if we get back, you can still have kids, assuming you were fertile before."

She had no desire for children in the immediate future, but felt enormous relief on hearing his words.

Then, she thought about now, here. "So, we can…"

"We can. When we're ready."

She was surprised by the implications of his words. "You're not?"

"It's been a long time for me. Can we take it slowly? I'd like to explore all of you before we do."

That sent a thrill through her. "We might need to eat to have the energy needed."

He stood and pulled her up. "Dinner time!"

She laughed as he pulled her to the replicator.

They didn't get much sleep that night. Exploring each other's bodies was a long and dreamy experience.

Sarah felt worshiped from all of the tender brushing of her skin and the kisses all over her. She tried to do the same, but Chuck was a master at this.

Of course, he focused his attention on some parts of her, including a wonderful time on the objects of her discussion earlier with Mut. He definitely liked them, but he seemed to like every inch of her body.

When he focused lower, no one had ever given her more pleasure. She did the same with him and his gasps were music to her ears.

She obviously wanted more than that, but he seemed reticent. She could wait. What he'd done was wonderful in itself.

They finally lay beside each other very, very happy, and very much in this as a full relationship. A fling would not be sufficient.

Eventually, she rolled onto her side and he spooned her. She sighed contentedly and soon drifted off to sleep.

Chuck had his naked body pressed up against hers. His hand on her ribs just under her right breast, his legs against her gorgeous long legs. She was now asleep, but his mind wouldn't let him yet.

He had a goddess against him. Not one of those mythical ones, or one of the Ennead. Sarah was a real goddess. He'd worshiped her earlier and if she let him, he would do it again. Every inch of her was perfect, although the scars from wounds she'd sustained in her job were troubling. He would ask her about those, but he'd kissed them, wishing he could take away the memory of receiving them.

He'd realized that he loved her before they'd come to bed, but now he knew he loved her body as much as everything else about her.

He wanted her to stay in his life when they returned to their time. He'd do anything to make that happen. God, he even wanted to have babies with her, the very thing they wanted to prevent happening while here.

He was worried that she would be disappointed in his performance when they had sex, so he had avoided that tonight. He had worshiped her body, giving her as much pleasure as possible. The next time they came to bed, he was determined to pluck up the courage to go further. If he wasn't good enough, he hoped they could fall back on what had happened tonight.

Her relief at being able to have kids when back in their time made him think of that. The idea of raising kids together sounded so good. He mentally shook his head. He was getting so far ahead of himself! They had only just become intimate and he was planning a family!

He was sure that this thinking too far ahead and blurting out his thoughts was part of what led to the breakdown of his relationship with Jill. He had to control himself.

He would definitely make sure she knew how wonderful everything had been, but he mustn't talk of love, marriage or babies! They were wonderful thoughts, though.

He knew he was quick to fall for someone. He'd done that with Jill, but this felt so different. Sarah was so much better than Jill. His connection to her was stronger, right from the start. He could only think of her as his soulmate.

He was still thinking about that as he fell asleep.

A/N: Chuck's preparing for what he needs to do and Sarah has actually started. And their relationship is developing further.

So, what d'you think so far? A review would be nice.
