LISA

Kai's rummaging around in the pool house when I go out to the garden. If only he knew what happened there. If we left any clues at all, I'm sure Jennie erased them forever.

I carry my phone with me everywhere, hoping for a call from Damian. As long as I don't hear anything, the news can still be good, but I'm also dying to know what Jieun Lee thought of me.

"Hey, Lisa," Kai yells. "Can you give me a hand, please?"

I enter the pool house. All the furniture has been pulled away from the walls. He points at the bed—the scene of our first crime—and says, "That is one heavy bed. Can you help me move it over there?"

"What are you doing?"

"I thought I'd repaint, now that I'm here."

"Seriously?" He and Nathan sat outside with that bottle of tequila long after I went up to my room, unable to sleep but equally unable to knock back any more shots with my brother. Kai doesn't seem to be suffering too hard from a hangover. Maybe after imbibing too much, he simply drank a bottle of water and slept it off—instead of ending up in bed with someone he shouldn't. "What about your own house?"

"What's the point of renovating the house if Jennie doesn't want to live there with me anymore?"

"Are you sure that's what's going on here?"

"I just… need to do something. I can't sit around doing nothing. It drives me completely insane."

"These walls don't need painting. Go to the office if you want to work."

"I can't deal with people today." He pushes his fingertips against the wall as though assessing whether to knock it down or not.

"Fair enough, but I really don't think you should take on yet another project."

He exhales loudly, then leans with his back against the wall—I guess it's still deemed strong enough. "You know what I was thinking last night? When I was drunk out of my skull?"

"No." I stand next to him, my back against the wall as well.

"That if Jennie doesn't want to be with me anymore, maybe I'll find another woman who can have kids with me." He scoffs. "Can you believe that? Can you believe how vile and awful that thought is?"

"You were drunk. We all think and do things we shouldn't when we've had a few too many."

"Maybe that's why she wants to go on a break. Maybe she wants another man who can make a baby with her because her and me together simply doesn't work on that front."

"But it works on all other fronts," I say. "You've been married ten years, Kai. You don't just throw that away." It's not only my brother that I'm trying to convince.

"I'm not so sure of that."

"I'm not moving that bed with you, just so you know."

"Whatever." He shrugs. "She'd hate me for repainting without consulting her, anyway. Paint colors are Jennie's domain."

"Do you want to do something? Go to a movie? Go for a hike? Have a swim?"

"Sorry, Lisa. I've been so caught up in my own shit, I forgot about your audition. You must be beside yourself waiting for news."

"They probably haven't decided yet. They may take weeks. I don't know."

"Yeah." He overlooks the room. "Help me put this stuff back?"

"Sure." I cast one last glance at the bed, at the couch Jennie was sleeping on when I woke up in the middle of the night, my head sore and my soul ripped to shreds.

I'm arranging the chairs under the table when my phone rings. It's not Damian. Unknown number. I pick up because when you're an unemployed actor, you always do.

"Lisa Manoban speaking." I sure hope it's not Jennie calling me from a number that's not in my phone—not with Kai only a few feet from me.

"Hi, Lisa. This is Jieun Lee. I wanted to give you the good news myself."

I'm already jumping up and down with excitement. Kai stops what he's doing and rushes toward me.

"It looks like we'll be getting to know each other a lot better, because you got the part. It's yours if you want it. There was a really great vibe between us, don't you think?"

"Um, yeah. Oh, my god. Thank you so much."

"My pleasure. I really look forward to working with you. Let's get together soon, okay?"

"Yes. Definitely."

"Okay. Bye, Lisa." With that, Jieun abruptly ends the call.

"Was that what I think it was?" It's so good to see a genuine smile on my brother's face.

"Oh, my god, Kai. I got it. I'm going to be Jieun Lee's co-star in an awesome TV show." I stare at my phone in disbelief.

"That's so amazing." Kai throws his arms around me for a bear hug. "Finally, some good news. I'm so happy for you."

My phone starts ringing again. This time, it is my agent.

"It's Damian. I have to take this," I whisper against my brother's shoulder.

He lets go of me and crashes into the couch, as though he too has been waiting for the news and getting it has released all the tension from his muscles.

I chat with Damian, our elation growing as the conversation progresses.

"You did this, Lisa," he says. "And you're going to kill it."

When we hang up, I crash next to Kai in the couch.

"My sister's going to be on TV." He smirks at me. "Does that mean you're going to be even more insufferable than usual?"

I play-punch him in the biceps. "I've never been insufferable," I reply while thinking that, at the very least I'll stop sleeping with his wife. I do text Jennie the good news, though.
