Mila wasn't entirely sure what she had been expecting when she decided to go out with her ex camp director, she also wasn't sure what Elisa and Meg were expecting to happen either. She could feel the minor effects that her drink was having on her in the way that their conversation seemed to flow more smoothly as her drink went down.
He had offered to buy her another drink, which she would have ended up paying for anyway but she had declined. She was beginning to enjoy her time with the god and while she had always trusted him at camp, she wasn't willing to be fully drunk around him.
"So I said to him, why did you fuck the horse if you didn't want the horse child?" She laughed as he waved his hands around whilst telling his story, "Well, he didn't like that and next thing I know I'm ten feet deep in this swamp, covered head to toe in things that shouldn't be mentioned in polite company." His hands came to rest on the table after he had almost hit a woman who happened to walk past during the height of his storytelling.
"What happened after?" She questioned as he took a moment to pause.
"Oh, you know, I can't quite remember. Probably something interesting though." He sighed as he went to drink from his glass, not hesitating as the deep burgundy liquid turned clear immediately.
"Surely that gets annoying?" He looked at her over his glass as he downed the rest of his water.
"What?" His eyebrows shot up as she motioned to his glass that he had set back on the table between them.
"The whole, reverse Jesus thing." She waved her hand towards the drink, "Wine into water and all that."
She peered at him as he seemed to mull over his answer. He had been a lot more thoughtful than she had expected him to be from what she knew of his character. It was strange to her, to be thinking of Dionysus as thoughtful. Teenage her would have been aghast.
"It's the worst punishment Zeus could have thought up for me." He sighed and seemed to stare into the bottom of his glass as if it held all the answers to his problems.
"That must be awful." It wasn't even conscious, merely instinctual, her reaching out to grab his hand.
He looked down at where their hands met, seeming to realise what was happening at the same time as her. He coughed and pulled away.
"I know this lovely little cafe down the street if you want to get drinks that we can both drink?" She looked around at all the dancing people. They were all so young, so many that were clearly only in their first few years of adulthood. Mila wasn't old by any stretch of the imagination, but being surrounded by all of these youthful faces fresh into university, some of them still at college, made her realise just how out of place she suddenly felt in the club. And coffee sounded like the perfect solution.
"That sounds lovely." Meg would be annoyed at her for drinking caffeine so late at night, but Meg could go fuck herself. Mila was a big girl, and she could do as she pleased. Elisa on the other hand, would be yelling at her about second locations and how that's how kidnappers get you. Mila highly doubted that Dionysus would attempt to kidnap her, she liked to think her mum would save her, but then again who knows.
He grabbed her hand as he stood, dragging her out of her seat and towards the door. The cool night air caused goosebumps to ripple across her skin. She threw a quick goodbye to Bob over her shoulder as Dionysus continued to pull her down the street.
The cafe he came to a stop in front of was quaint. 'Caffeine and Chaos'. Her night had certainly been chaotic. The building was painted in various shades of blue and pink and seemed to have white, fluffy clouds drawn onto various panels of the brickwork. It was perfect, and adorable, and very much closed.
Dionysus didn't hesitate for long before going to the door, "What are you doing?" She hissed at him as he began to fiddle with the door handle.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" She stared at him, "I'm getting us coffee, obviously." He picked two hairpins from his hair, she hadn't noticed they were even there. Now that she looked, it seemed that he had put some effort into taming his normally untamable hair.
"Oh, obviously. How could I be so stupid?" He shot a glare at her as he began picking the lock. "This is highly illegal."
"I'm a god, what're they gonna do? Arrest me? I'd like to see them try." The lock clicked into place and he opened the door. It swung open and the smell of homebrew coffee and a variety of sugary goodies oozed out.
"They might not arrest you, but they'll arrest me." He rolled his eyes and walked through the door into the dark cafe. Begrudgingly, after a few moments, she followed him in.
"Then I'll be forced to save you like the hero I am." He turned to face her, "Now, what can I get you?" He clicked his fingers and the lights flashed on, temporarily blinding Mila. When her sight reappeared, he had moved to behind the counter, a coffee mug already clasped in his hand, all of the machinery buzzing away behind him. He looked a bit like Willy Wonka.
She laughed as she sat down at the stool in front of him. "I'll get a Latte please." He nodded and began to make her drink.
"Any syrups, Darling?" The machine hissed as he stared at her.
"Cinnamon if they have it." He looked through the syrups that they had, quickly grabbing the cinnamon one and drizzling it into her mug.
"Cinnamon's an odd choice. I wouldn't think it would go in coffee." He placed the mug in front of her when the coffee had finished brewing. He wiped his hands on a teatowel before draping it over his shoulder.
He peered at her as she took her first sip of the hot drink, sighing as it took away the chill from outside.
"It's my dad's favourite. It works better in hot chocolate than coffee, to be honest. It just reminds me of home, I suppose." She seemed to curl in on herself as she spoke, like talking of home made her feel cosy and warm.
"Sounds nice." He reached forward and took the mug from her hands, bringing it to his mouth and taking a sip. She let out a noise of indignation as the cup was stolen from her hands. "That is vile. Disgusting. Ugh, get it away from me." She laughed as he downed glass after glass of water.
"It's amazing. You're just wrong." She laughed as he looked at her. She didn't know if he could look more disgusted than he currently looked.
"If that's amazing, then I'm not a God." The two dissolved into laughter as they made eye contact. Dionysus slowly went to make a drink for himself, she noticed it was a cappuccino with caramel syrup.
It wasn't long after that they made the decision to call their night short. Dionysus offered to walk her home and the slow amble to her apartment was nice.
The air was cool and refreshing after her hot drink and Dionysus made idle conversation with her. The twenty minute walk between the cafe and her apartment seemed to pass in a few seconds as he continued to make her laugh with stories of himself and the other gods. She was sure that Zeus would not be pleased with the things Dionysus was telling her.
They reached her door far too soon in her opinion.
"Well, this is me." She glanced at the door behind her as he leaned backwards, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "I should head in, I'm sure my friends have probably broken in and made themselves at home. They have a habit of doing that." She was talking too much, Meg had told her that she did that when she was nervous.
"Right, well. Chiron will be expecting me back soon. Work and all that." He seemed to look around hesitantly. It was like he was waiting for a monster to appear out of nowhere and attack them, which wouldn't be entirely out of the ordinary, Mila thought.
Dionysus suddenly leaned forward and planted a chaste kiss on her cheek. Pulling back quickly as if her skin had burned him. He looked as if his action had surprised him just as much as it had surprised her.
"Yep… Well… I'll be going then… See you, uhm, see you round Mila. If you want, I mean." He stuttered through his words as if he had never had to ask to see someone again before, which Mila highly doubted. She wondered just how much of the nerves were put on to make her feel special.
"I'm free saturday." She put him out of his misery as he continued to stutter about consent and boundaries which was really rather sweet, "Pick me up at seven."
She opened her door and walked in, leaving him in the hallway.
"Wait, what are we going to do?" He called through as she went to shut the door behind her.
