While waiting for what could be a long journey, I once again attempted to locate the electronic signals of the most powerful coven in our underworld, the Volturi. I had already gathered key information about their flights and their modus operandi for collecting humans to be used as food.
"Well, I have a good card now."
I continued jumping from signal to signal, focusing on Italy, Volterra, and the castle where they lived. I found security cameras and the secretary's computer, a human who, given the data I could see, was replaced by another after a few years.
"Poor woman, she has no idea," I thought. "Are they going to hire her without knowing anything?" After further investigation, I realized she seemed to be aware; they offered her immortality to later use her as food.
"Damn hypocrites! And then they punish us for doing the same..."
As I sharpened my senses even more and tried to delve deeper, I looked through the security camera at a particular painting of three vampires.
"Hmm... they must be the leaders of the coven..."
Suddenly, I captured signals from the plane and people who seemed to be coming, "Here is the harvest", I thought, so I took the opportunity to piggyback on their electronic devices.
What I heard was horrible, screams and pleas, in vain. I recorded everything and uploaded it to the network. With practice, I managed to create a "serverless" system, distributing the information and leaving subtle pieces of code scattered in different regions of the vampire world. If someday the Volturi tried to come after me or my friends, I would have enough information to negotiate terms, or use it as blackmail.
But I continued to delve deeper into the signals, and as the vampires cleaned up the scene, I could hear the leader of the Volturi, named Aro, talking alone to what I assumed was someone else. It seemed like this vampire was lamenting:
"My dear sister Didyme, why? Why did you have to fall in love with Marcus? How I miss you, you don't know the pain I feel day by day, thinking that I had to end your life. I fear I will never forgive myself for the crime I committed..."
Listening to that monologue, I thought, "This does seem really interesting. Do the others know about her? Has this so-called Marcus forgiven him?" I continued to pay close attention to what Aro was murmuring; I had a feeling this was going to be interesting.
"Sigh... I know you look upon me with total disapproval from somewhere, and no, I haven't told Marcus. You know, my dear sister, for me, the stability of our species is everything; this is something that will always remain between us, in my heart..."
I widened my eyes and then smiled. I had in my hands what could be the Volturi's main weakness, and I caught him confessing red-handed.
But I had to be extremely cautious. This information would very likely unleash a civil war within the coven, and it would make many other covens, in search of power, try to take advantage of it for their own ends. If I learned anything in my travels, it's that a spurned vampire is the most dangerous thing that can exist, and nothing and no one would stop them from avenging their loved ones, above all, the person they loved the most.
The signals from the phones used by the now deceased individuals were gradually being cut off one by one; they were getting rid of the evidence and destroying anything that could be used for espionage. I caught just one signal by chance, almost miraculously; I was sure the Lord was helping me with His blessing.
As the connection was being lost, I decided to take a break. My powers were draining me, and I hadn't fed for quite some time now. The captain interrupted me, saying:
"We've crossed the Panama Canal! So get comfortable because we're going to take a ride over the Pacific!"
The captain was excited. I had already isolated the fossilized poison in my backpack and couldn't take my eyes off it. My weapons were with me, and after drinking the other sample of the serum, I put on my hood and went out to contemplate the sea.
"Where are we?" I asked.
"Hahaha! While you were in your trance, as I said, we crossed the Panama Canal. Now we're almost out of Mexico and entering US waters."
I went back to my cabin to take a break; using my abilities that way stressed me out a lot. I was nervous and anxious to see the Cullens and finally finish my mission.
Although I had gotten used to my peculiar mind, it was very difficult for me to truly relax and let it rest. My brain always worked on multiple tasks simultaneously, and it loved to do all kinds of calculations, strategies, while other parts focused on my feelings, memories, and my abilities, which always seemed to connect with anything digital nearby. It was really annoying to have all sorts of "voices" or images in my head; the noise was loud, and many times, I just wished for some rest.
After a long journey, the captain finally said to me:
"We have arrived, my friend! Look!"
I went up to look at the landscape, and it was beautiful. A lush forest lay ahead of me along with a very flat coast. The waves were calm, and there were cliffs in some places. The fog and the trees reminded me a lot of Himmelsburg; the latter didn't have a sea and was more mountainous. We got into a boat and traveled a certain distance, and I finally disembarked, sinking my boots into the calm waters; I felt like a soldier landing in Normandy.
"Welcome to Forks, my friend! Good luck!" he bid farewell from the boat.
"Thank you very much, Captain! God bless you!" I replied as we waved our hands, and he returned to the yacht, finally disappearing back into the sea. I noticed that here, the cloudier weather didn't make my skin shine, truly understanding why the Cullens lived in this place.
I took a few steps, slowly leaving the waters, when I felt that something was wrong, very wrong. And from the forest, I could see Stefan and Vladimir emerging, along with several vampires, bounty hunters. There were a lot of them, and this time, I was without Nacho, without any plan to escape.
Vladimir approached with a smile, followed by Stefan, saying:
"We extend our most distinguished greetings, master of ingenuity and hunter of our lineage."
The other vampires began to surround me, with others emerging from the forest. I touched the saber, and Stefan said:
"Don't rush to draw your weapon, my dear. It would be a pity to have to take it from you, and, in that case, I fear the consequences would be... unfortunate."
"Damn..." I thought. I calculated all possible angles, but only the sea seemed logical; I had no idea what effect saltwater would have on the fossil, and anyway, they would reach me by swimming, given the backpack I was carrying. Coming out with boots was sure they would jump on me, and I would quickly fall to the ground, to a certain death. Vladimir continued with his speech:
"We have heard the whispers; the Volturi are fervently searching for you. But today, fortune smiles in your direction. For you see, we share a common enemy, that abomination dressed in Italian grandeur."
Silence spread like a thick fog, and finally, with a hint of impatience creeping into his voice, Vladimir concluded:
"The proposal is simple: join your talent and your creations to our cause, or we will be forced to act in ways that both of us will regret. A true pity, sir."
As one of the bounty hunters approached me, we all saw to the right as one of them suddenly lost his head.
"Afton, Volturi..." I murmured. And then, suddenly jumping out of the forest, Demetri, Felix, along with several guards.
"War!" Stefan shouts, drawing his saber.
One of the bounty hunters jumps on my backpack, and I manage to electrocute him with the glove, then decapitate him with my saber. Then another Volturi guard rushes at me, dodging my saber, while another bounty hunter manages to grab my backpack.
I throw a taser at the bounty hunter before he escapes, while flying and throwing several smoke bombs that surround the whole area. I try to go for my backpack and am tackled by another Volturi guard. I lose the saber and use the dagger, and it plunges into his chest as he screams.
"Ahhh! It burns!"
Vladimir takes the saber, murmuring, "The power..." and uses the saber against other Volturi guards. Felix engages in hand-to-hand combat with several bounty hunters while Stefan duels with other guards. Two bounty hunters run towards my backpack, and I throw two tasers, electrocuting them to finish them off with the dagger, while Vladimir feasts on guards with my saber.
"Hahaha!" he laughs while slicing through several guards, wielding my stolen saber with great elegance.
Two guards surround me, and two bounty hunters jump on one, dismembering him. I throw a taser that the guard dodges and keep him at bay with the dagger.
Then another bounty hunter looks at me; this was a three-front duel, and it seemed that no one was decided against whom to go first. I just wanted to protect my backpack and recover my saber at all costs.
The Volturi guard finally lunges at me, while the bounty hunter tries to steal my backpack. I cut down the Volturi guard, and as I struggle with the bounty hunter, another guard intercepts him and finally decapitates him; it was all chaos.
Vladimir is intercepted by an invisible Afton and disarms him, cutting off his hand. I throw a stun grenade and call my saber back, but not before being intercepted by Demetri.
As I struggle with Demetri, who has me on the ground, holding the dagger with his hand, Stefan jumps towards him, and I manage to call the saber, finally igniting both the saber and the dagger, one in each hand.
Both guards and bounty hunters are thrown at me, some to kill me and others to rob me; I manage to keep them at bay with both weapons, although barely. As the smoke begins to disperse, Felix, after killing several bounty hunters, looks at me and says:
"The vampire hunter! One on one, our duel will be truly legendary!"
He removes his cloak and runs towards me. Making movements with the saber and dagger, I graze his clothes, but his agility is impressive; it's almost as if he reads my movements. I manage to detect Afton behind me with my mask, giving a jump and delivering a deadly blow with my saber, ending him.
A bounty hunter lunges at me; Felix intercepts and brutally dismembers him.
"He's mine, scum!" he shouts.
Felix turns back towards me, and with several cuts, I manage to keep him at bay, the duel become quickly a delicate balance between fancy moves and struggles between him closing our space gap and me recovering the distance of it, using both weapons.
"This guy in hand-to-hand combat is deadly," I thought.
He kicks sand with his foot and manages to kick the saber out of my hand; I try to call it back, and he kicks me in the face, but not before managing to give him a slight cut on the leg. I call the saber again, and a bounty hunter intercepts it but is stunned by another Volturi guard. Felix jumps with a large rock and throws it at me; I manage to use the jet boots to escape in time, while he picks up the same rock, now split in two.
He throws both rocks at me; I manage to cut one with the dagger, and the other hits me in the face, breaking the mask and hindering my vision for a second. Felix charges at me and manages to grab my hand, where I have the dagger, with his, initiating a struggle.
Slowly, he moves the dagger towards my eye; I immediately turn off the dagger, seeing another bounty hunter grab my saber.
"No, no, my saber..."
Felix with his great strength slowly brings the dagger closer and closer to my eye as I scream with all my might.
"Nooo!"
I grabbed his hand with my glove and start to electrocute him, holding on to his other hand, but he would not let go of my hand where I had the dagger, and while I saw another guard running towards me, and my saber in the hands of a bounty hunter, I muttered.
"God, help me..."
