Synopsis
Chen Mai Dong and Zhuang Jie journey of friendship and love began not by choice but rather by force. The High School Guidance Counselor tackled two problems by forcing Mai Dong and Zhuang Jie to help each other while at school. Mai Dong was the rebellious out of control teen always getting in fights who had no purpose in life. Zhuang Jie however was an introvert keeping to herself because she was still trying to learn how to cope with being disabled because of her leg being amputated. The more they helped each other the more they developed new leases on life.
At a young age most children do not have to confront the issue of death , yet both Mai Dong and Zhuang Jie had to face that reality. Mai Dong's rabble rousing was the instigation whereby his best friend was brutally assaulted and killed. Zhuang Jie however had to face death and it's harsh cruelty when she was involved in a horrific traffic accident that killed her father and maimed her for life. Seeing "Death " first hand….. the two formed new leases on life.
After seeing the reverence and dignity the local funeral director and embalmer gave his friend Mai Dong took head of the lessons of life he learned from his new master and mentor …he became the funeral make up artist. Even though his life as a mortician is looked down upon, he stayed true to his commitment in serving the dead and giving them a dignified farewell. Chen Mai Dong was now unapproachable and an extremely private person, a far cry from his rebellious days as an errant teen.
Zhuang Jie high school experience with the help of Mai Dong moved to Shanghai and became a top medical sales person ….. making her the envy of those around her. In Shanghai she wasn't looked upon as a cripple as no one knew of her disability unless she told them . Her success stemmed from her effervescent personality and ever smiling face that drew people in and garnered customer loyalty. Though Zhuang Jie's teenage years were tough…..she worked hard on herself, overcoming the many challenges that came her way.
When Chen Mai Dong and Zhuang Jie meet years later on a train back to Nanping their hometown . Zhuang Jie is surprised to see Chen Mai Dong's brusque and rudeness in not wanting to acknowledge the friendly Zhuang Jie.
Their love journey seems be left in the hands of fate—and the townsfolk, including Mai Dong's grandmother, that want these two to be together, but the biggest spanner in their plans could well be Mai Dong's prickly personality and his willingness to open his heart due to the scares of the past.
Character Analysis- Chen Mai Dong
There is something irresistibly charming about Chen Mai Dong, but approach him at your own risk. He is extremely reticent, and even though what he does is somber, it seems to have become part of his personality. Now he is in his thirties and a far cry from his 17-year-old rebellious self. …. that was known to have gotten into fights and having been a bully in school, Mai Dong was a troubled child caused by his parents divorce at an early age. Even though there are constant rumors around town of his hyper defiant days as a teenager and of that grievous incident which changed his life, Mai Dong remains impassive yet well respected as the person that gives loved ones their due respect in crossing over to the other side when life comes to an end. Well aware that his profession is looked down upon, he has a valid explanation: "It is not us they hate, they fear death. This is one profession where you cannot say let me be of your service." He is committed to his job, and the grim reality of the inevitable has made him practical as much as it is made him sensitive toward those suffering.
However if there is one thorn in his life, it is his grandmother's constant efforts to get him to date and hopefully married. Mai Dong has had a break-up in the past and seems disinterested in getting into a relationship.
Even when his former classmate Zhuang Jie cheerfully greets him on the train, his cold stare clearly states, "Buzz off." It is obvious he remembers her but does not want to acknowledge her or anything from his past. But what is it he is hiding, and why does he avoid getting close to people, are questions which constantly come to mind. As he keeps running into Zhuang Jie and avoids her, you can feel there is more to it than he shows.
There is something intriguing yet fascinating about the mysterious Mai Dong. He has layers to his personality, but no one can scratch the surface and dig deep into his soul. Even though he has deep insight into life, which also comes with the nature of his job, it seems Mai Dong has also shut the world out.
Character Analysis - Zhuang Jie
Zhuang Jie is a spirited soul who is warm and friendly, and it is easy to get along with her. She is back home in Nanping after years in Shanghai. The first person she befriends when back is an old lady, a former ping pong champ, who is desperate to find her match for her grandson. A hilarious moment is when Zhuang Jie teaches the granny how to navigate Shake, a WeChat function that matches random strangers, so much so the old lady feels Zhuang Jie herself would be worthy future granddaughter-in-law. That's Zhuang Jie's charm—you cannot help but like her. It only seems her former classmate Mai Dong back home does not want to recall or even engage with her.
Back home, she helps her mother who runs a successful chicken business along with her husband, who is Zhuang Jie's step-father, with food deliveries. She also takes charge of her young sister's education. Following the arrival of her brother, who no longer wants to pursue his major and becomes a cause for concern, Zhuang Jie is the one who understands his existential crisis.
We are matter of factly told that Zhuang Jie has a come a long way. When she casually teases Mai Dong for failing to recognize her, one understands she was indeed a different person back in school. Years ago, the crash which killed her father had left her with a serious injury. Having lost her leg, Zhuang Jie was dealing with severe trauma, but recalls it was a classmate of hers who had given her the hope to carry forward. She is told by the young Mai Dong, "A crutch can be a weapon too," which are words she had held dear. As she takes on life as it comes, one cannot help admire her optimistic attitude.
Even though Zhuang Jie is the poster girl of determination and indomitable strength, could it well be just a mask, a front she has put on for the world to see?
The 21 episodes of this series deals with a destined love journey with " Death" being the ultimate enlightener as to what is really important in anyones life. The screenwriters did a marvelous job in mind provoking analysis as to what events in anyones life determine the actual outcomes of a life worth living . The director of this series allowed the two main leads to personify the emotions that would be lovers face on a daily basis and allow them to fully display those emotions onto the screen. K Dramas are starting to get away from the Harlequin type romance whereby any form of romance is left to the viewers imagination… Will Love in Spring is not one of those… Zhuang Jie is not one of those … when she loves she wants to feel… touch ….. devour her lover in ways most K Drama females leads are not allowed to.
The culmination as to where this series was headed ….. comes in the last half of Episode 21.
Zhuang Jie: Chen Mai Dong… Do you plan to leave me and find another woman?
Chen Mai Dong: That's so typical of you… you always speak without thinking it through….You are never sincere.
Shocked and stunned Zhuang Jie: I'm never sincere?… I have been explaining and apologizing to you over the past months….You are hard to please.

The realization that they are different in their thinking and expectations begins to place cracks in the masks that Zhuang Jie has placed on herself to protect her from further pain and hurt she doesn't want to deal with.

AS she heads up the ramp she is surprised to see Chen Mai Dong waiting for her.

Zhuang Jie: I'm sorry , Chen Mai Dong…during this period I have made many proposal plans… still , I couldn't plan out our future. Her biggest fear seems to become reality as he tries to grab her hand with the ring … she immediately pulls it away….. however he continues only to hold it.
Chen Mai Dong: Because it's never your own business .

Zhuang Jie's epiphany was seeing her life flash before her eyes as she is once again at death's door seeing the huge truck barreling right at them with no means of escape. No one can plan their life meticulously. You can never know which comes first… Tomorrow or an accident.

Episode 22
Though the series provided a very thought provoking insight into life and death it failed to deliver the full impact of the Web Novel" Lover" by auther She Mu Si…. Chen Mai Dong's and Zhuang Jie"s story was far from over. Many story lines still needed to be told especially how their married life would be. Will Cui Ge blunt truthful mannerisms drive Wang Xi Xia crazy after she has children with him? Does Zhuang Yan find himself and his purpose in life. Will He Niao Niao keep the family together just like her dad did? How will Chen Mai Dong learn to interact with his mother and father now that Zhuang Jie has brought them back into their lives?The Wed Novel " Lover " had 64 chapters and an Epilogue ... I was able to find the english translation to 11 chapters that led up to when Mr He's death and Funeral. Those eleven chapters did provide the back story to what transpired in the Chen family...with details of the divorce and the reasons why Chen Mai Dong chose to live with his grandmother and why he became so rebellious. I tried to incoperate some of those details in Episode 22
The train ride from Shanghai to Nanping is much different than the first time for Chen Mai Dong and Zhuang Jie did it in episode 0ne….This time they know they can no longer live apart and their love won't let them. Zhuang Jie cuddles next to Chen Mai Dong as she playfully nibbles on his ear lob and then lets her hand rub his thigh to see if she can get a rise out of him.

Zhuang Jie: Mother Chen … I didn't expect all this.
Mother Chen: You've married my son…. This is the least I can do…. I want to do for you the same as I would for my younger daughter….
Zhuang Jie: Mai Dong has a sister….. He never told me.
Mother Chen: His father and I have made so many mistakes in his life… that I'm sure he doesn't want to talk about it…. We can't change the past …as much as he would've liked to….. now that you're his wife ….you need to now why he is the way he is.
Zhuang Jie: I know him from high school so I know he was a trouble maker back then ….but he was always considerate of me and helped out….. He was actually my first love.
Mother Chen: Dongzi was a very sweet and loving little boy….but once he started understanding what was happening between his father and I and the reasons for our divorce….he changed completely….. he wanted nothing to do with either of us….that's why he went to live with Grandma Chen.
Zhuang Jie: But both of you seem to be together now
Mother Chen: It's taken us over 20 years to get our act together…..When Dongzi was little I thought we had the perfect little family…when he was about 8 or 9 I discovered that my husband had an illegitimate son with his secretary only a few years younger than Dongzi….. I was crushed but then I eventually forgave him….. but when he had another son with one of his clients that was it for me….. I divorced him and married the first guy I could …..just to get my revenge on him….. Dongzi hated me for doing that ….. to make matters worse I got pregnant and my daughter was born….. now you can understand what we put him through…. His rebellious stage was all because of his parents that didn't know how to be parents.
Zhuang Jie: I thought my childhood was messed up….now I can understand him more.
Mother Chen: From the first time I saw you two together…..I felt you were good for him…continue to love him….that's all he has ever wanted.

Wedding Ceremony
Zhuang Jie has always had an affinity for beautiful things whether cloths, furnishings and men….. seeing her husband dressed in his tuxedo she thought he was beautiful…she. was eager to walk with her arm under his as they made their way down the flowered laced walkway of the grand ballroom of Park Hyatt Hotel…Mother Chen spared no expense to give her son and his wife the wedding ceremony they deserved.
Zhuang Jie nudges her husband: You never told me your family is this wealthy.
Chen Mai Dong: Don't let this go to your head….it's not mine…. Be happy with our house and our way of life.
Zhuang Jie: I couldn't be happier….. you know I was just messing with you.
Mother Chen takes Liao Tao under her arm and begins introducing her as the mother of the bride and networking with the local dignitaries and promoting her chicken business. She has a big smile on her face hearing all the compliments as to how beautiful and smart the bride is and how lucky Chen Mai Dong is for finding such a girl.
He Niao Niao was feeling kind of left out until she got a tap on her shoulder from another girl her own age ….Chen Mai Dong's step sister
Li Li: Hi….. who are you related to or you just a guest?
He Niao Niao: I'm the sister of the bride... Zhuang Jie… who are you?
Li Li: I'm the sister of the groom but we're not very close….he's my stepbrother…. My mom has really outdone herself this time…. She must really likes your sister… My name is LiLi….. what's your name... do you want to hang out….I'm really bored here.
He Niao Niao: Sure…. My Name is Niao Niao... What school do you go to?…. I haven't seen you around.
Li Li: I'm forced to go to a private school and I hate it….. all the girls there just talk about how they need to find rich husbands to keep up their life styles.
Zhuang Yan walks up to them
Zhuang Yan: Are you behaving yourself?…..mom asked me to check on you to make sure you don't get into any trouble.
He Niao Niao: Tell mom not to worry ….I won't cause any trouble.
As Zhuang Yan walks away ….Li Li asks her
Li Li: Who is that beautiful guy…..does he have a girlfriend?
He Niao Niao with a surprised look: He's my brother… Zhuang Yan…. Are you into older boys?
Li Li: If they are as good looking as him ….I am.
He Niao Niao: you're funny.
Li Li: What does he like…..I mean what type of girl does he like?
He Niao Niao: He was into ducks just recently…. Now he just spends all his time painting….I don't think he really like's girls that much… you do know there's a big age gap... he goes... to art school in Shanghai.
LiLi: My body will start filling out in a few years ...that age gap won't be a big deal…. He'll see me differently by then.
He Niao Niao: I don't know about that... When I grow up I want to find someone like Mai Dong….. he's so nice to me... he even helps me with my homework... even math that I hate.
Li Li : Maybe I need to get to know my brother better... I need help in math too!
The Wedding Ceremony wouldn't be complete without a few words from Grandma Chen… she takes to the stage and asks for the microphone
Grandma Chen: How do you turn this on….. you over there turn this on for me…. Attendant turns the microphone on…..Ok…. Can you all hear me…. I've waited for this day for so many years and I can honestly say I'm extremely pleased… Dongzi …you did good…. Jie I couldn't have picked a better granddaughter…. I did pick you….. didn't I…..Everyone laughs…Jie he is your responsibility from here on out….. I know you will love him dearly ….. especially after what I saw you two do…
Zhuang Jie: Grandma don't say it…. I'm already embarrassed.
Grandma Chen: There's nothing to be embarrassed about…that's what a good wife does for her husband and a good husband does for his wife…. You two made me wish I was young again….. Now that everything is official….. I expect a great grand baby nine months from now….. Don't make me wait any longer... Wang Xi Xia comes and whispers into Zhuang Jie's ear: What was that all about... did she catch you doing it? ... You're going to have to tell me everything.
Zhuang Jie: She's something else... she caught us naked in bed and then made us breakfast... my mother would've killed both of us ... but not Grandma.
Wang Xi Xia: I guess there is a trade off... can you imagine if you had married that jerk with his family issues? You got the Cinderella Wedding and Prince Charming to boot... Even though he doesn't act like Prince Charming.
Zhuang Jie: he's my Prince Charming... hows the your baby making going?
Wang Xi Xia: You're going to have to have Mai Dong give him some pointers ...for him being a doctor you would think he would know how to get me off.
Zhuang Jie: Have you talked to him about what you like... it's give and take... you're to use to taking but little in giving.
Wang Xi Xia: Let's do a double date... so we can get him in the right frame of mind.
