I watched in shock as one of the only people I thought I might never see again walked through the cafeteria doors, bouncing to the beat of music only she could hear and sat down at the farthest table, I felt transfixed with the mix of emotions swirling through my chest. I looked away when I realized there were others with them, other vampires, the blond man beside him had a pained expression on his features, I tried to concentrate on remembering until I heard a slight cough beside me, turning again to look at my face. At the table, I noticed Jessica looking at me with a knowing look on her face before turning and gesturing to the table where Mary was.
"Those are the Cullens" She said and I turned back around to look at the table at the back of the room again.
"The blond ones are Rosalie and Jasper, they are twins that Carlisle adopted, Jasper is dating Alice, the shortest and Rosalie, Emmett, the guy who looks like a bear." Jessica made a disgusted face when she finished "It's honestly gross you know". So Mary was Alice now, I could get used to it.
"They're not siblings, you know that Jessica" The other girl at our table said, Angela I think was her name, but I didn't look away from the Cullens' table.
I took another deep breath of the sweet, unmistakable vampire scent, maybe she remembers me, I thought for a moment before deciding to take a test and then, low enough that no one at my table could hear, but loud enough to still fit like a human, I whispered.
"Mary?" I watched waiting for some response from her or anyone at her table before I looked away in frustration and went back to my lunch.
"Edward is staring at you" I blinked looking at Jessica.
"what?" she rolled her eyes and pointed to an occupant of the table that I still hadn't noticed "the one with the bronze hair, but don't waste your time, apparently no one here is good enough for him"
The boy in question was staring at me with a posture as tense as a bow about to break.
"I won't" I didn't make a point of paying him any attention and went back to my tray without any desire to go back to eating, I let out a sigh and stood up putting my backpack over my shoulders with one hand and holding the tray with the other.
I made my way to the trash can, dumping what was left on my tray into the trash before making my way down the halls and to my locker, grabbing the supplies I needed for the biology class that was to follow. My thoughts turned to Alice, she knew what I was and as a vampire I was sure she could hear me calling from across the cafeteria, but there was no acknowledgment when I called out to her. I closed my locker and leaned my forehead against the icy metal, pondering the idea that she might have forgotten about me even after all these years, a vampire's memory is perfect she should be able to remember, a sharp pain ripped through my chest and I cringed slightly.
I heard footsteps down the hall to my right and again the vampire scent, I didn't make any move to acknowledge her presence as she stopped beside me and I watched her shoes as if they were the most fascinating thing in the world, I could feel them. she was almost radiating energy and I felt my lip twitch slightly in nervousness.
"Hey, I'm Alice." Her voice sounded like bells, it was different from the voice I used to hear, but at the same time so much the same.
"I know" I replied simply, not letting on whatever emotional turmoil I was feeling at that moment.
"You know, usually when someone introduces themselves to you, you introduce yourself back." Her voice was amused and I found myself looking at her suddenly, pulling away from the closet and giving her my full attention.
"I thought you already knew my name" I cocked my head to the side with a slight smile trying to be hopeful.
"I know, but I thought it would be more polite to let you introduce yourself" she beamed at me and my heart sank.
I cleared my throat and looked away at my shoes "I suppose so, my name is Isabella Swan, but you can call me Bella", I reached my hand towards her, instantly feeling her cold hand wrap around mine, I stared at our hands for a moment before returning my attention to his face not sure what to do.
"Sorry, poor circulation" she said awkwardly as she withdrew her hand and took a step back.
I huffed in amusement at the perhaps not so 'unintentional' joke she's just made "Bella, it's rude to laugh at someone's condition" she said frowning at me which honestly was adorable and I couldn't help but smile more .
The bell rang, signaling the start of the next classes I slung my backpack over my shoulder and looked around seeing some students start to show up for their classes, when I looked back at Alice she had a thoughtful look on her face before shrugging her shoulders with a new smile and launching herself at me.
I froze at the sudden closeness, her arms around my torso and her face buried close to my neck.
Slowly I wrapped my arms around her smaller figure and then I felt more than heard her give my shoulder a light sniff, feeling amused at the action I buried my face in her hair squeezing her lightly in my arms and took a deep, exaggerated breath. without any intention of hiding my action, and then in the next second I could feel her shaking with her laughter before pulling away from me with a huge smile that I unconsciously reciprocate.
"See you Bella" she said pulling away from me while waving exaggeratedly and heading off in the opposite direction.
I sighed contentedly for a moment before wiping the smile off my face and heading to my next class.
