Lorelei hurried through the train station, pushing her overflowing luggage cart in front of her. She wove between the crowds, trying not to run over any children or small dogs. She was going to be late! It was only her second year at Hogwarts, even though she was a 7th Year.
Lorelei was born to a rich Muggle family in Virginia. Her family attempted to hide her magic abilities from the Muggle world, and also from herself, by using questionable methods. Her family finally gave up when her mother gave birth to Lorelei's younger sister a month before her 12th birthday. The next month Lorelei was shipped off to Adams, Massachusetts. Lorelei resented being a witch, but had come to terms with it once she discovered her skill with brewing potions.
At the age of 17, Lorelei's family moved to England for her father's job and she transferred to Hogwarts. Because she started wizard school a year late, she was a year older than her fellow classmates. However, this didn't prevent her from making a few friends at least; Myra and Beth, two fellow Slytherins, immediately took her in and made her feel welcome.
"Lorelei!" Beth was waving frantically over the crowd of students. "Over here!"
Lorelei ran over, leaving her luggage cart with the others.
"I thought you'd never make it!" Myra said, giving her friend a hug.
"So did I!" Lorelei said between breaths. "I woke up late. My alarm didn't go off and of course Jester here is useless." Her friends laughed. Her cat just snuggled deeper into her soft, black hair. Jester was a Sphynx cat who's only cares in the world were eating and sleeping.
"Well you're here now, and just in time." Myra said. The students boarded the train just as the clock struck 11:00. They walked down the corridors of the train cars until they came to an empty room.
Lorelei plopped onto the leather bench and let out a sigh. "Phew. I think that's the most activity I've done this month!"
"Oh geez." Beth rolled her eyes.
"Did you have a good summer?" Myra asked the two.
"Oh, definitely! We went to the beach a lot." Beth said happily, "It was Gerald's first time in the ocean. He didn't much care for it." She laughed at the memory of her little brother squealing as the waves washed over his feet and made his footprints disappear
"I bet that was adorable." The girls cooed over the photos Beth showed them of her baby brother.
"What about you, Lorelei? Were you able to get out of that crummy flat?" Myra asked with a frown.
Lorelei's friends were both aware of her unfortunate situation. Her parents rented out a flat for her in London to live at when she wasn't at school. "I did actually. I visited a few museums and this really good bakery. We have to go sometime!"
"For sure!" Beth agreed.
"Once we graduate we'll get a flat together in London and explore the city from top to bottom." Myra said. They had come up with the plan halfway through their 6th Year at Hogwarts.
The train ride to Hogwarts flew by as they talked about everything they were going to do once they graduated. Before they knew it, the train was chugging into the station at Hogwarts and they were being ushered into carriages for the ride to the castle.
"We have hardly any classes together!" Myra groaned. The students had received their Year 7 schedules shortly before being ushered to their house common rooms.
"It's not our fault you want to be an Auror." Lorelei said. "That's a lot of homework and NEWTs . A lot more than Beth and I will have."
Lorelei had picked her NEWTs in the hopes of becoming a teacher of Advanced Potions one day, and Beth simply wanted to be an owl caretaker for the post.
"You two have a few classes together," Beth said as she began unpacking her trunk. "But I only have one class with Myra."
"Which one is that?" Myra asked. She grabbed Beth's class schedule and skimmed over it. "Charms. Sweet! You're great at Charms, that means you can do my homework for me." She teased.
"You wish!" Beth balled up a sock and threw it at her friend's head.
The girls laughed and finished unpacking, then headed down to the Slytherin common room to socialize for awhile before heading to bed.
