"Thanks for coming," Suzy said when Kate arrived at Heath Road a little later that afternoon. Jo Davidson had let her leave from work without a problem, it was her emotional state that had delayed her visit.

"Anything to help," Kate said meekly.

As Suzy led her to the room where the ID parade was going to happen, Kate caught sight of Steve hanging around with the rest of the Assault team. It was the first time she had seen him since they had split up and they both looked at each other awkwardly.

She had sort of known Steve would have been involved in capturing her attacker as he had vowed to do, but it didn't help ease her anxiety. In fact if she was honest she felt more anxious that she had to get this ID parade right.

"Do you want me to run through the drill?" Suzy asked as she showed Kate in to a room where an unknown police officer waited to show photographs of some men wearing balaclavas to Kate.

"No," replied Kate. "It's fine," she said, remembering back to when she had assisted DCI Huntley with a similar task.

"I'll be waiting outside then," Suzy said before she exited the room.

Kate turned to the unfamiliar female officer and when she was ready looked at the eight photographs prepared for her.

They were whole faces instead of wearing balaclavas which made the job much harder than she anticipated. She had thought she wouldn't ever forget his eyes, but looking at the pictures, Kate found her memories getting muddled up. It could have been any one of these men she thought.

She glanced at the officer for help even though she knew that she wasn't involved in the case and had no idea which one was the photo that Suzy, and more importantly Steve wanted her to pick.

"I don't know," she informed the officer a little stressed, before looking again at the pictures. "Maybe number 5," she said, looking again at the officer's face for a clue, but annoyingly it remained neutral. "Yes, number five," she repeated.

The officer got up and opened the door, allowing Suzy back in. "Number five," the officer told Suzy and Kate instantly knew from the disappointed look that passed briefly over her features, that she had chosen the wrong one.

"I'm sorry," she apologised to the DS before hurrying off.

Suzy repeated Kate's choice to the rest of the team before Steve took off in hot pursuit of his ex. Why had she got it wrong? Had she done it on purpose? She'd told him she didn't want him caught?

"Go easy-," Suzy shouted after him but realised it was too late. He was already out of sight. "-on her," she muttered the last words of her warning to herself.

"Kate!" Shouted Steve when he caught up to her.

"I know!" Kate retorted. "I fucked up! I got it wrong! I'm sorry," she rushed out without letting Steve get a word in edgeways as she continued her march out of the police station. "It's just they all looked so similar and everything got so muddled in my mind," she defended herself.

"Hey!" Steve said gently as he reached out and grasped her hand to turn her towards him. His disappointment at Kate had evaporated on seeing how she was beating herself up over making the wrong decision. He knew she hadn't done it on purpose. "It's not your fault. It was a long shot that you'd be able to recognise him from just seeing his eyes and mouth," Steve pointed out. "And he was behind you for most of the time," he added.

"I'm still sorry," Kate repeated.

"We can still press charges on the DNA evidence," Steve reminded her. All was not lost.

"I know you worked hard on this," Kate said as she looked at their hands still joined together. She'd missed Steve's touch since she'd ended things.

"Too hard, wasn't it?" Steve teased and Kate smiled before finally raising her eyes to meet his. "How've you been?" he asked. To him it looked as though she had lost weight which he was concerned about.

"I'm getting by," she said. It was an honest assessment. It was hard without Steve beside her. "You?".

"OK," Steve said when he felt anything but. He really wanted to wrap her in his arms right now. "Can I give you a lift home?".

"It's ok," Kate replied. "Jude's waiting for me in the car park,".

"I see," said Steve as he quickly let go of Kate's hand.

"I had a bit of a wobble when I found out I'd be doing this ID parade," Kate explained, knowing that Steve had automatically jumped to the wrong conclusion. "I didn't know who else to call,".

Steve felt sad at her admission. He would usually be the one she leant on, but now that wasn't to be. "Better not keep him waiting then," he said as he walked Kate to the door of the police station.

"Bye," said Kate at the top of the steps

"Bye," replied Steve as he watched Kate descend the stairs and walk over to a car. He saw Jude get out and give a tentative wave to Steve who returned it, before helping Kate in to the passenger side of the vehicle. Steve couldn't help but notice the hand he placed on Kate's lower back.

"Is Jude single?" Steve asked Suzy when he returned to the ops room. If she knew him there was a chance she knew about his relationship status.

"Who?".

"Jude. The rape counsellor?".

"I'm not sure," Suzy replied. "I think he might be. Why?".

"No reason," Steve replied. It was a lie. He was fairly sure that Jude quite liked Kate.
