Mark's POV

Mark was on the defensive as Jackson bombarded him with a barrage of attacks—punches and kicks that hit harder each time, sending him crashing through a grove of trees. Mark executed a backflip and landed on his feet. His body was far more durable than before, thanks to the strange energy coursing through him, enhancing his strength, speed, and stamina. He sensed something more to this energy, something even stronger, but he needed to figure out what it was.

His thoughts were abruptly interrupted by four blood spears hurtling towards him. With remarkable agility, Mark dodged all four and sprinted toward Jackson. Cocking his fist, he slammed it into Jackson's face, sending him flying. Mark chased after his airborne friend, quickly positioning himself below Jackson and kicking him further into the sky. Mark leaped higher than Jackson, raising his leg for a massive axe kick. Jackson, however, anticipated the move and blocked it with his arms crossed in an X. The impact sent Jackson crashing to the ground, but the block mitigated the damage.

Mark landed safely, but he knew he needed an advantage to defeat Jackson. If only he could create barriers by drawing on the ground. Unbeknownst to him, his foot had subconsciously begun tracing a circle around himself. The only reason Mark noticed was Jackson's mocking comment: "What are you doing? Trying to make a friendship circle? We all know that won't help you beat me. I thought you were better than that," Jackson said with disdain.

Mark couldn't understand why he was drawing the circle; it seemed pointless. Yet, the thought occurred to him—what if the circle could create a barrier, a boundary Jackson couldn't cross? His musings were cut short when Jackson lunged at him, attempting to punch him. To their mutual surprise, a barrier formed along the circle's border, sending Jackson flying back several meters.

"What the hell? Did I really make that happen?" Mark wondered aloud, astounded. "Can I really give this circle meaning?" He decided to experiment further. Grabbing some blades of grass, he willed them to become as hard and sharp as iron. To his amazement, they did, without cutting his skin despite his allergy to iron. This revelation excited Mark—he had discovered a new ability, or perhaps his true ability: to imbue objects with meaning through symbols or marks.

Realizing this was the advantage he needed, Mark set to work. Outside the circle, he drew four additional symbols, each designed to enhance his movement within the barrier. With newfound determination, Mark prepared to use this ability to its fullest potential.

Lee POV

Ashley was walking towards the front of the train. There were four train closets to check. He tried the first one, but it was empty, nothing important. He closed it and moved on to the second one. This one had some tools, mainly a bunch of wrenches. Lee didn't know their exact names, but he grabbed the more wrench-like one. "This is a good weapon," he thought, getting a feel for it. He then closed the second train closet.

Next, he looked into the third one, which contained machinery equipment. Lee needed help understanding what it could be used for but felt he'd figure it out. He closed the third one and checked the fourth, which also had nothing in it. He quickly closed the door to the final closet and finally reached the door to the control room. Through what was once a window, he saw Lily pulling a walker outside of the train.

Lee opened the door and saw the train controls. To be honest, he thought it was way too complicated for him to even try to operate. "Maybe Kenny will have a better crack at this," he thought.

"Hey Lee," a voice startled him. Lee turned, wrench in hand, ready to clobber any walker or monster, but it was just Ben. The boy looked scared and surprised.

"Oops, sorry Ben, but you shouldn't sneak up on people like that," Lee said, lowering the wrench.

"Sorry Lee, I just thought you noticed me, and you know, I didn't really want to arouse suspicion or any awareness, for, well, you know..." Ben said, trailing off awkwardly.

Before Lee could reply, Lily came back in. She looked curious about what was going on. "So, what are you boys doing?" she asked, folding her arms and waiting for an answer.

"Nothing," Lee said, wanting to keep it simple.

"Yeah, it was nothing, nothing happened," Ben added, not as convincingly as Lee.

"Are you sure there was nothing?" Lily urged.

"Yes, there was nothing. Can we deal with this now?" Lee said, hiding his embarrassment.

That's when they noticed a blinking button. "That light is blinking," Lee said.

Lily just glared but didn't say anything.

"Push it," Ben said with the goofiest smile on his face.

"Push it?" Lily repeated, surprised at what Ben suggested.

"Why not?" Ben added, still grinning.

"Are you f****** serious?" Lee said, hesitant. He didn't want to be the one responsible for breaking the train. For all they knew, it could be a self-destruct button or something equally disastrous. After all the crazy stuff they had seen, it wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen. But maybe, just maybe, it would do nothing.

Ben leaned down and pressed the button. Both Lily and Lee tensed, waiting to see what would happen. They heard a sound—it was the brakes.

"See, it's just the brakes," Ben said a triumphant smile on his face.

"Alright, I'll give you that," Lily said, scratching her head and smiling. Lee also smiled, realizing the implications. If the train brakes were this easy to release, maybe they could get it running. Their luck might finally be turning around.

"This f***** works!" Kenny said, walking in and sitting at the controls.

"I think so," Lee answered, his hope growing.

"I'll be damned. How in the hell are we going to get this thing moving?" Kenny's tone was more joyful, which made Lee smile even more. Maybe Kenny was starting to feel better, focusing on something other than his family.

"I don't know. Ask Mr. Amtrak over here," Lee said.

"No clue," Ben simply said, walking out of the room.

"We found this in the boxcar back there," Lee said, handing Kenny a clipboard with a map of the tracks.

"Whoa, is this what it looks like?" Kenny asked, looking at the clipboard.

"I think so," Lee said, hope in his voice.

"These tracks will take us right towards Savannah. A hundred tons of steel. There could be a hundred walkers and monsters in our way, and we wouldn't even have to give a s***," Kenny said.

"I don't think it would be that easy. The things we've seen those monsters do, they might be able to cleave right through this thing," Lily said realistically.

"Well, that may be true, but it's a better chance than us walking. Don't you agree?" Kenny said, looking at Lee.

Lee thought about it for a moment. What Lily said was true, but this might be their only chance, their quickest way to get to Savannah. If they were going to move fast, they needed to leave a message for Mark and the others in case they arrived at the train. They were probably heading in the same direction.

"This is our only option, but I think we should let Mark and your father know. Maybe leave a message," Lee suggested.

"Yeah, that might actually work. My dad's pretty good at navigating Georgia, or anywhere in the country. He'll find us for sure, but we'll make his life easier if we tell him which direction we went," Lily agreed.

"I don't care what you guys do as long as we get this train working. I'll be down for whatever," Kenny said, dismissing Lee and Lily's conversation.

Lily frowned and walked out of the boxcar in a huff. Lee frowned too, feeling for his friend. He knew it had been hard for Kenny, but sometimes he wondered why Kenny had to be such an ass.

"Come on, man. Don't be like that," Lee said, clearly disapproving of his friend's actions.

"Be like what?" Kenny asked, confused.

"What you said just now—that can't fly anymore. We're in this together. I know it's hard when you lost Katjaa; she was a nice woman. But I need you to be nice to everyone. We can't be split apart on this. We need to be united, do you hear me?" Lee said seriously, with no intention of backing down.

"What do you know?" Kenny retorted harshly.

"You know it, man. I want you to think about what I said. I'll go and figure out how to get this train working, and when I'm done, we're going to have a talk—just you and me. I don't care what the outcome will be, but you are going to conform to this group. It's not just your family; it's the group now. I want you to know that," Lee said, his voice carrying a dangerous tone, but he knew it was necessary.

Lee walked over to the other side of the controls and spotted a notepad with words on it. The pages were torn, but there was still a piece left that read "engine instructions." The last half of the instructions was missing, but Lee could discern enough.

"This is it! These are the instructions on how to start the engine," Lee said, excited. "But damn it, the pages are gone," he added, frustrated. Their good luck seemed to come with a dose of bad, but it could be worse, he thought, grabbing the notepad. Then, he remembered something.

Jackson's POV

Jackson returned to the scene where Mark had frustratingly ousted him. He couldn't understand how Mark had gained so much power in such a short time. The most alarming part was that Mark, who should have been there, was nowhere to be seen. There wasn't even a trace of him. "Damn it, where could that pesky human be?" Jackson thought, enhancing all his senses to scan the area. Yet, he couldn't sense anyone. He did detect two other signatures heading towards the area, but they were still far away. Another enormous signature, brimming with mana, made Jackson stumble back in surprise.

Just as Jackson sensed Mark at the last second, he found Mark beside him. Jackson was baffled but had no time to react as he was slammed by a massive orb of mana that enveloped Mark. The impact smashed him through the ground. As Jackson's body made contact with the orb, it began disintegrating and burning. "Damn it, I need to get out of here quickly," Jackson panicked. He tried to break free using his enhanced strength. When he attempted to squeeze and break the orb, it felt like rubber, and each effort only intensified the burning. The only reason he hadn't been reduced to ashes was due to his blood magic enhancing his healing abilities.

Like a rubber band, he was snapped away, crashing through multiple trees. He needed a new tactic, perhaps something long-range. Pointing his fingers like guns, he began shooting blood bullets at Mark, but they merely bounced off the orb. Mark pursued, and Jackson fell to the ground, ensuring he landed with style.

"There must be something I can do to pierce that thing. If I could just get one good shot at his torso, I could probably kill him outright," Jackson thought. He then had a perfect idea. He punched the ground, creating a dust cloud that momentarily halted Mark. As the dust cloud dissipated, Mark looked around in shock. Above him was Jackson, whose lower torso was encased in a blood cone with grooves like a drill. Jackson spun his body like a drill, piercing through the sphere. His aim was dead center, and he drove right through Mark's stomach.

Jackson laughed in absolute victory. "This is a battle I will win. Nobody will stop me now, and that is a fact," he thought as he landed on the ground.

Naruto POV

Naruto groaned in boredom. "Lee and the others better hurry up. There's nothing to do here," he said. It had been about three hours, and they had done nothing but sit around.

"Quit your whining. It will get done when it gets done," Emily said, though her tone hinted at boredom.

Naruto had clones hiding around the area for protection, ensuring they were safe. "Maybe I should practice controlling my chakra more," Naruto thought. He slapped his face, realizing he should have done that. His clones would alert him if anyone came close since he would gain their memories. "Damn, this would have been a great time to train. Better late than never," he mused. Doxie would probably chew his ear out about this. Maybe not. Why hadn't she come to train with him? Maybe she was waiting for him to come to her.

Naruto started meditating, but before he could enter his inner world, he was jolted by memories of a man approaching through the bushes. Naruto opened his eyes and immediately stood up to see who it was. True enough, everyone else had their guns raised. Naruto held out his hand in a seal, ready to activate his chakra if necessary. To their surprise, it was just an old man with a shovel. He looked scruffy and dirty, almost homeless, with gray-white hair, an unkempt beard and mustache, and filthy clothes. He appeared to be in his late fifties.

"Don't move, or I'll shoot," Carly said, her gun aimed at the man's temple, her gaze intense and threatening.

"Yeah, you're outnumbered. Don't try anything funny," Emily added, making Carly smile at the remark. Duck took cover behind Travis, surprising the teen, but Travis raised his gun while Ben shakily raised his. Travis then put his friend's arm down.

"I don't think that's necessary, man. He already has three guns trained on him. I don't think he's going to do anything," Travis said. Everyone else nodded. The third person with their gun trained was Lily, holding a pistol.

"Well, this is a welcoming party. I didn't expect to come back to my home to find strangers taking it over," the unknown man said kindly, dropping his shovel to the ground and raising his hands. "But that's fine. I can always find a new one."

Naruto had a weird feeling about this guy like something was about to go wrong. "Who are you? And don't try anything funny," Lily demanded.

"My name is Chuck, and I was going back to my home, which is that boxcar over there," Chuck said, pointing to the boxcar behind them.

There was an uncomfortable silence until Chuck broke it. "May I ask you guys a question, if you don't mind?"

"Sure, why not. Come on, guys, this guy doesn't seem that threatening. Let's just hear him out," Naruto reasoned. Everyone started lowering their guns.

"All right, what's your question? And make it quick," Carly said, not in the mood for nonsense.

The man scratched his head. "Have you guys seen anything weird? Any footprints that were super big, anything wolf-like?" he asked ominously.

"No, why do you ask?" Travis said, not liking where this was going.

"Well, the reason I was in that boxcar in the first place was to kill a werewolf that's in this area right now. It's probably roaming around, so it's unsafe to be here until I kill it," Chuck said, his voice serious.

This unnerved everyone. "Are you serious? There's not just vampires in this world, but also werewolves?" Ben said, absolutely terrified.

"Oh, you've encountered vampires? That's quite interesting. Hopefully, it wasn't a vampire lord. Those things are hard to kill. I don't think any of you would be able to kill such a being. So, I'm assuming it was just a normal slave vampire," Chuck said, picking up his shovel and holstering it on his back.

"This guy is pretty cool," Naruto said. Everyone began to relax and get to know Chuck. Surprisingly, he was a nice guy. He told them he was a monster hunter.

"Really? You're a monster hunter? Do you know of the St. Johns?" Emily asked. Everyone grimaced at the name.

"Actually, little girl, I think I have heard of that family. I thought they were all extinct, though. It's been a long time since there were any monster hunters with the St. John name. Probably a few thousand years, I reckon," the old man said.

Emily was surprised. "That's how far back my family goes," she said aloud.

"So you're a St. John," he said, surprised. "Now that I look at you and your mana levels, they're abnormally strong. You must be a St. John. You have the potential to surpass me if you cultivate it," Chuck said sagely. He then pulled out a guitar from nowhere.

"Holy crap," Travis said, shocked. Clementine was equally impressed.

"That's my mana ability. I'm able to summon things from thin air using my pocket dimension. I store a bunch of things in here," Chuck explained as a big brown bag appeared in his hand. He pulled it out, revealing it was full of shiny silver items. "These are all made out of silver. Here's some hag dust; it's good for warding off wraiths. Here's some boko root; it's useful for skinwalkers or wendigos." This went on for about thirty minutes until he put everything back into his pocket dimension.

"Well, I better be going back to my home. Don't worry, I'll come back. I just need to get some stuff," Chuck said, walking towards the boxcar. It was surprising how this old man could win them all over. He was cool and seemed like a genuinely kind guy, Naruto could tell.

Naruto could easily read people, but he still wondered how truthful Chuck was. If there truly was a werewolf, how close could it be?

Unbeknownst to them, just outside Naruto's view, a giant claw emerged from the shadows, only a few feet away. It watched them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Doug's POV

Doug and Larry finally caught up with Mark and Jackson, but it seemed they were too late. "Mark, no!" Doug yelled, a rush of anger surging through him like a tidal wave. Larry held him back.

"We can't rush in recklessly. I'm as angry about Mark as you are, but we need to keep a level head, understand?" Larry said harshly but calculatedly.

Doug decided to stay hidden. "Where did that god run off to?" Doug asked, both of them looking at each other with unsure expressions.

On cue, the strange god-boy named Hades appeared just as Jackson was about to destroy Mark's body. Hades grabbed Jackson's hand. "What do you think you're doing?" Hades asked with a chilling stillness.

Jackson was completely frozen in fear, and Doug could see it on his face. "What are you?" Jackson gasped in pain as Hades grasped his arm and broke it in half before ripping it off entirely.

Hades, unfazed, continued, "You say you're immortal, but you're not. You're an evil son of a bitch, but it's not my destiny to kill you. Another person's destiny is to do that." He glanced at Mark's corpse, then at Doug and Larry, giving them a signal.

"He's giving us an opening. We need to take this chance," Larry urged, drawing three knives. Doug activated his power, touching the knives. With all the speed he could muster, Doug shot out, making contact with Jackson's face, and punching him. Hades stabilized Jackson, and Doug's power took effect. The two silver daggers shot out, one hitting Jackson's neck and the other his torso. Larry ran forward, throwing the third knife at Jackson's heart. Jackson disappeared, reappearing behind Larry, and ripped open his chest cavity in the blink of an eye.

Larry, with a pained smile, looked at Doug. "My lad, don't you learn anything? Hurry, kill the son of a bitch," Larry said, holding Jackson's arm in place.

Doug thrust his magnetized daggers into Jackson's stomach, making him fall to his knees, still clutching Larry's chest cavity. "You damn fucker," Jackson said in agony, a trench of fear in his voice.

Behind Jackson, Mark appeared with a silver dagger in hand, a cross on his chest with the inscription, "Heal all of my injuries." With all his strength, Mark shoved the dagger into Jackson's heart.

"No! Damn you bastards!" Jackson yelled, glowing—a sign of his impending death. "How could I have lost? Is this really how I'm going to go?" Jackson asked himself.

Doug didn't care. He shoved the other two knives into Jackson's heart, ensuring a quicker death. He wanted Jackson's memory to fade into obscurity. A teacher once told him, "When you die, you're not actually dead. It's only when nobody remembers you that you're truly dead." Doug didn't know how many people knew who Jackson was, but he vowed to never think of him again.

It looked like Jackson was talking to Mark, but Doug didn't care. He just wanted to sleep. It had been a very long, weird, and sad day.

Lee POV

At first, Lee wasn't sure how he was going to start the train. He had no experience with trains, and without instructions, they could spend months trying to figure it out and still get nowhere. Then, he remembered the pencil and Clementine's leaf-rubbing project she had shown him. He couldn't believe how crucial these simple events would be in getting the train working. Using the pencil to do a rubbing, he managed to make out some of the faded words on the instructions. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than nothing.

Before starting the train, Lee decided to scout the rest of the train for supplies. He went through the second door and found himself at the front. Using the train's ladder, he climbed down and was startled by a walker stuck in a nearby car. "Jesus!" Lee exclaimed, his heart pounding. He started laughing, realizing that after everything he had seen, walkers seemed almost manageable compared to the other monsters out there.

Inspecting the car, Lee spotted a box of animal crackers. "This could be useful for the group, especially the kids," he thought to himself. He joked about the seatbelt, "I thought those were supposed to save lives."

Lee devised a plan to kill the walker. He opened and slammed the door to get its attention, talking to himself, "This is going to hurt." He found himself talking to himself more and more lately. He quickly got into the car, restrained one of the walker's arms, and pressed the seatbelt release. Backing away, he exited the car and smashed the walker's head multiple times until he was sure it was dead. "Better safe than sorry," he muttered. He grabbed the animal crackers and felt a small sense of pride. Wins had been rare lately, and this was a good one.

As Lee walked back to the front of the train, he overheard a heated discussion. "Are you sure this guy can be trusted? He might seem okay now, but we don't know if he could go crazy overnight," Lily said cautiously.

Lee, unsure of what was going on, asked, "Hey guys, what are you talking about?"

Travis responded, "Some guy just came out of the forest, warned us about a werewolf, and gave us candy. Then he walked towards the second boxcar." He pointed to the boxcar.

Lee was shocked but relieved that no one was hurt. Naruto chimed in, "His name is Chuck, and he seems pretty cool, to be honest."

Lee was suspicious but decided to address the immediate need. "Before I deal with this guy, I have some bottled water. Does anyone want a drink?" The group erupted into arguments, so Lee quickly calmed them down. "Alright, everyone will take one swig. Line up."

After distributing the water and the animal crackers, Lee kept the notepad with the train instructions. Watching everyone eating and laughing, he felt more determined to get the train working. He debated whether to start the train now or confront Chuck. He decided to start the train first.

Lee walked over to where Kenny was. "Alright, man, I have the instructions. Let's get started." The first step was simple: flip three switches. The entire dash lit up.

"Holy shit, whatever you did, it lit up the dash," Kenny said excitedly.

"So far, so good," Lee replied, reading the second step. It was even easier—just turn a knob. "Now we're talking," Kenny said, more excited.

Lee looked for the third step but couldn't find it in the front compartment. He remembered a compartment with engine knobs, so he quickly walked over, following the instructions precisely. The train started.

"Holy shit, we're golden!" Kenny exclaimed, as happy and accomplished as Lee felt.

"Yeah, we are. We're super golden. It feels great," Lee said. Naruto jumped in front of them, eyes full of enthusiasm.

"I can't believe you guys got this big thing working!" Naruto said, joyful but with a hint of uncertainty.

Lee frowned, remembering Chuck. "Alright, you two, I'm going to confront this guy named Chuck. I'll be back in a bit."

"Wait, there's a man in that boxcar?" Kenny asked.

Lee nodded. "Nah, I think I'll come with you. You might need help," Naruto said seriously.

Lee decided to let Naruto come along. They both walked over to the second boxcar, where they found Chuck sitting on a dirty sofa, seemingly without a care in the world.

Chuck stood up. "I assume you were the one touching my stuff," Chuck said, with no ill intent that Lee could notice. Naruto was on guard but slightly more relaxed.

"Don't worry, I didn't take much. Just the route to the train, the bottled water, and the animal crackers," Lee said, opting for honesty. Lying would be a last resort.

"It's all right. Most of my important stuff is sealed in my dimension. Everything here is just junk, except for the shovel," Chuck replied pleasantly.

Lee was surprised by how friendly Chuck was. "Really?" he asked, still cautious.

"Yep. Plus, I have it all memorized," Chuck said, pointing to his head.

Lee was surprised but felt it could have been worse. Chuck seemed genuine, and for now, that was enough.

Chuck turned towards his dirty belongings, speaking nonchalantly, "I tried to burn this place or tried to kill me." He then turned back to Lee. "My name is Chuck. Charles if you're fancy," he said, introducing himself.

Lee introduced himself in return. "I'm assuming you're part of that crew over there that almost tried to put a bunch of holes in me. Would you mind my drift?" Chuck said, chuckling.

"Yeah, sorry about that. Can't be too sure these days, right?" Lee apologized.

"And I guess the guy at the front is also part of your group?" Chuck asked.

"Yep," Lee confirmed.

"I saw you guys come over here to this area. It's a good thing that I did too. I'm going to tell you what I've told everyone else: there's a werewolf in these woods, and I'm supposed to slay it. So, it's fine if you take this train, but I'll need you to wait for a moment so I can go and do that. I can't have you take my home," Chuck said. His tone wasn't threatening, at least not as far as Lee could tell.

Lee didn't know what to say, but before he could get another word out, there were screams from outside. Shocked, both Chuck and Naruto quickly exited the boxcar alongside Lee to see a giant beast attacking the group.

The scene was chaotic. The beast, a massive werewolf, was tearing through their defenses. Carly, Travis, and the others were trying to fend it off, but it was clear they were outmatched.

"We need to act fast!" Naruto shouted, his eyes focused and determined.

Chuck didn't hesitate. "Stay behind me, and I'll handle this," he commanded, gripping his shovel tightly. He sprinted towards the beast, using a combination of agility and brute strength to strike at it.

Lee and Naruto joined the fray, using whatever they had to distract and attack the creature. The werewolf snarled and swiped at them, but Chuck's presence seemed to keep it at bay.

"Keep it busy!" Chuck yelled as he pulled out a small vial from his pocket. He tossed it at the werewolf, and it shattered on impact, causing the creature to howl in pain.

"This stuff is silver-infused!" Chuck explained. "It won't kill it, but it'll weaken it!"

The beast, now visibly weakened, staggered back. Lee saw his chance and charged at the creature with a crowbar, swinging with all his might. Naruto, using his chakra, enhanced his speed and strength, landing several blows.

Finally, with one last effort, Chuck drove his silver-tipped shovel into the werewolf's heart. The creature let out a final, agonized howl before collapsing to the ground, lifeless.

Panting and covered in sweat, the group gathered around the fallen beast. "Is it... is it dead?" Carly asked, her voice trembling.

"Yeah, it's dead," Chuck confirmed, pulling his shovel out. "But we need to get out of here. There could be more."

Lee nodded. "Let's get this train moving. Chuck, you're welcome to come with us."

Chuck looked at the group, then at the train. "Alright. But let's make sure we're ready for anything. There's no telling what else is out there."

The group hurried back to the train, adrenaline still pumping. As they climbed aboard, Lee couldn't help but feel a surge of hope. They had overcome another obstacle, and with Chuck's help, they might just make it through the next one too.
