***Scene Break*****
The next forty-eight hours were a blur for the Walsh family, especially Brandon who couldn't stay awake for more than a few minutes at a time.
It was full of doctors coming in and out of the ICU room he was in, having tests run blood drawn and having to have his mother help him drink or eat.
He was confused half the time. He would fall asleep to his mom sitting with him only to wake up with either his dad there instead or Brenda and Dylan. He knew he had heard Dylan tell his dad something about his car but couldn't make heads or tails of it. It was never quiet there; there was always the sound of his heart monitor and oxygen machines permeating the room.
Slowly, Brandon was able to stay awake longer and, finally, was able to sit up in the hospital bed. He scratched the nasal cannula under his nose. He was glad for the face mask to be gone though as it tended to make his face itch.
He was still confused about how he got there and what was going on. He didn't really remember much of what was said to him in the first few days in the ICU. He remembered not feeling well at the rave and not much else. He could remember waking up here and a doctor talking to his parents but couldn't really follow much of the situation.
Forty-eight hours into his hospital stay, he was finally staying awake longer - at least a half-hour to forty-five minutes.
Dr. Freedman, accompanied by a new doctor named Dr. Morley, had confirmed that if he remained stable and progressing how he was then he'd be moved to a monitored room outside the ICU. Though he wasn't going home it was better than having everything he did watched constantly. He still had rules and the visits still would only be two at a time and under a half-hour each as he still needed rest.
****Scene Break ***
It was moving day at last, and Brandon was more than ready. He was finally awake enough to visit with his parents, Dylan and Brenda when they were there. Brenda had wanted to skip school that day so she could be there when they moved him.
He had put his foot down and said she could see him when she got out of school that day. He knew she had been missing classes to be by his side; he didn't want her to jeopardize her schoolwork. He'd wondered about how Emily was but neither his sister nor Dylan had mentioned her since he woke up. He hoped she was okay.
He looked up as his new doctor, Dr. Morley, walked in with Dr. Freeman. They said if everything checked out, he'd be able to be moved to his new room today. He watched them as they checked all his vitals hoping that nothing would crop up.
Dr. Morley looked at him as he checked out the readings from the monitors by his bed and nodded. "You're looking better than when I first met you Brandon…" He quietly conferred with Dr. Freedman then looked at Brandon again. "I think it's safe to move you to your new room." He smiled when Brandon seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. "I know it's not fun being stuck in here where you feel like everything is under a glass bowl. But we had to make sure you were stable enough to be moved before we did it. There was no point in moving you to a room only to have to bring you back if you ended up worse."
Brandon just nodded in agreement.
After the breath of relief, he held onto his mom's hand who was also holding her breath. She'd been worried they were going to say it was going to be another day. "So, can I get up and head to the next room?
"No, we will be moving you in the bed," Dr. Freedman replied as they started to move things around.
His I.V was set on the hook of the bed along with his oxygen that was connected to the tank behind his head. His monitors were moved with him as they opened the door. They unlocked the breaks on the bed and started out of the ICU cubicle.
They were just heading to the elevator when Brandon turned to the side seeing his friends sitting in the waiting room.
Brandon and Cindy waved at them. They headed over towards the bed. He waved tiredly at them. "Hey, you guys didn't have to come…."
They all stood up.
"Hey, you're headed to your new digs!" Steve said jokingly. "We wanted to be here to see you off."
This was the first time they had seen Brandon since he'd been admitted. Dylan and Brenda's description of what happened was informative, but it was different seeing Brandon like this. Seeing him on the hospital gurney was scary.
Brandon shrugged then nodded. "Yeah, now that I'm going to be in a regular room I can have a bit more visitors."
They followed him to the elevator.
Dr. Morley looked at Brandon. "Yes, you can have a few but there are still restrictions on visitations. Two people and only half an hour at a time." He hit the up button on the elevator.
"But…" Brandon protested. He thought now that he wasn't in the ICU all the restrictions would be lifted. He wanted to be able to see his friends. Sure, he slept most of the time, but he still got bored. There was only so much TV that he could stand to watch.
"Brandon, you're still recovering and need rest," his mother said. "I don't think your friends will mind as long as they get to spend some time with you."
His friends all nodded in agreement.
Dr. Freedman looked at the group of teenagers. "Let's get him settled in his room and then you can visit him. He'll be in room 350."
They moved the bed into the elevator and closed the door. They watched as Brandon's eyes started to droop closed. They knew he had a long road ahead of him. They still had to talk about what happened. He had asked a couple of times what was wrong but they wanted him to be more alert so he could understand it better.
