Chapter 26
To Spin and to Weave
September 30th cont:
Amelia had indeed entered the wards which protected the castle grounds, along with Amos Diggory. They both strode, with purpose up the drive, towards the Castle entrance. Although surprised and impressed with its restored condition, they commented on it to each other, they did not break their stride, until they reached the steps to the entrance hall. They had spoken before setting off regarding the note, that had been received by Amelia, describing an incident involving the headmaster, Umbridge and Miss Granger. It would appear the two supposed Adults had issued threats to the Girl disputing the validity of her familiar. They both knew that if the accusation were true there would be serious repercussions for Hermione, theft of a familiar carried a heavy penalty Amelia understood corruption of a light creature had also been mentioned. On the other hand those same charges could be levelled at both the Headmaster and Umbridge if the Familiar had bonded with the student, which she knew to be the case, but it now had to be independently verified. That was why she had asked Amos to accompany her, as head of the department of Mysteries, he was qualified to verify the bond in a manner that was accepted as independent by both the Wizangamot and the international confederation.
Amos and Amelia walked through the door into the entrance hall, to be greeted by Minerva, who was accompanied by Harry and Hermione.
"Welcome both of you, I presume you have arrived in response to Miss Bones note." Minerva welcomed them.
Amos nodded. "Indeed we are, although reports have also been received from both Albus and Umbridge as well. I am glad to see Lord Potter here along with Miss Granger, I am aware of the circumstances that make that necessary, I believe we shall require Lord or Lady Black here as well."
"Lord Black will arrive shortly, along with Lady Ashmole." Minerva told them. "They shall catch up with us before we reach the Headmaster's office, shall we go up?"
The group headed up the stairs, towards the entrance of the Headmaster's office. Sirius and Ginny were waiting for them at the end of the corridor, having used the access direct from the Alliance common room to the corridor.
"Ah good, Lord Black, Lady Ashmole, I am glad you are here." Amelia greeted them. "Now we are all here that need to be, before we go up I should inform you that Amos and I have discussed how best to go about this. We need to go through the procedure to verify the bond, so please bear with us while we do. We shall also need to ensure Umbridge is there, so if she isn't in the office already I shall have Albus summon her. Finally, unless there is a direct challenge to family, no matter what either of them say, please allow Amos or I to deal with it. Naturally If Amos or I ask you a question you should Answer, but otherwise do not react to anything others say on this matter."
They all nodded their agreement, then headed towards the statue which guarded the entrance. Minerva gave the password and led the way up the stairs, knocking on the door when they reached it, then pushing it open to allow Amelia and Amos to lead the way.
"Ah, Amelia, Amos, I am glad you have come, you received my letter I trust." Albus greeted cheerfully.
"Indeed we did, one of three sent on this matter." Amelia replied. "Though what involvement the sender of one of them has in this I am left to wonder. However, as she has decided to insert herself in this, would you please summon your Defence against the Dark arts Teacher, Dumbledore."
Albus nodded and summoned a house Elf who he sent to retrieve Umbridge. "She is a witness to the events and therefore to the theft of my familiar." He said confidently. "I am glad to see you have brought Miss. Granger, I thank you for escorting her Minerva, you and the others may go, I am sure this will be resolved shortly and there is no reason for your attendance."
"They are here as required Dumbledore." Amelia responded.
Albus adopted his caring, puzzled expression. "I fail to see why their presence is necessary Amelia."
The head of the DMLE sighed. "Really Albus, you are not fooling anyone. Lord Potter and Lady Ashmole are here as House Granger is under their protection, and so they are here to ensure the rights of their ward are not infringed. As you know you may not have an interview with Lord Potter or Lady Ashmole without the presence of Lord or Lady Black, and Minerva is entitled to be here as this matter involves a student of her house."
A knock on the door interrupted any retort Albus was about to give Umbridge entered. She looked round the room and opened her mouth to speak, but Amelia prevented her.
"Ah Delores, we have been waiting for you. Now while I fail to see any good reason for you formally inserting yourself into this matter, you have done so, requiring that you are present for these tests. Should Dumbledores claim fail, then you shall be just as liable as he is, thanks to the letter you sent. Now the evening wears on, so Amos shall we begin?" She stated.
"Indeed Amelia!" Amos grinned preventing Umbridge from saying anything, although she had opened her mouth to speak. "Let us begin with the first of the tests, I should say that regardless of the result of individual tests I shall continue until the internationally agreed standard for results has been reached. I shall begin with the claimant, Dumbledore would you please summon the familiar which you claim has been taken."
Confidently Albus called for Fawkes to come to him, a command no truly bonded familiar could ignore. The room was silent, Delores was looking smug, but after a full minute there had been no response. Dumbledore was about to call again, but Amos raised a hand to silence him. They waited a full five minutes, until Amos lowered his hand and spoke. "My apologies for silencing you Dumbledore, but the agreed test is for the clock to be restarted if the call is repeated and five minutes is deemed to be the maximum time to wait before the other party be allowed to make a call, should the disputed familiar not respond. Under those standards it is now the turn of Miss. Grainger, if you would please."
"Hem, Hem!" Delores interrupted just as Hermione took a breath.
Amos scowled. "Apologies Miss Grainger, could you start again, everyone else please remain silent as we were for Dumbledore. Are you ready Miss Grainger?"
"Yes Mr. Diggory." She replied calmly and at his nod again took a breath. "F..."
"Hem, Hem." Umbridge coughed again.
"Silencio." Amos said, his wand pointing at Umbridge, who flushed red. "That should keep her quiet, I will not tolerate disruption of these tests by anyone. Again my apologies Miss. Grainger, would you please call the familiar."
Hermione called Fawkes, who appeared in a flash of light and settled on her shoulder.
"Excellent!" Amos smiled. "Now Fawkes, I wonder if you would allow me to cast a bond detection charm on you."
The room filled with Phoenix song for a moment.
"Fawkes asks that a protection charm be cast around the three of us, that is Mr. Diggory, herself and I, one to prevent anyone using magic to interfere with the spell." Hermione told them.
"That is a good idea and would not interfere with the charm I need to use, Fawkes could you recommend a suitable spell?" Amos responded, the Phoenix song briefly filled the air once more. "Dumbledore, perhaps you could translate?"
Albus shifted uncomfortably, he had not understood the song. He could lie of course and made a suggestion from his own knowledge, but he knew the Phoenix would betray any prevarication he attempted.
His discomfort was brought to an end by Amos speaking again. "No matter, perhaps this one will suit." He threw up a little known shield that would deflect any spell, except Unforgivables, but would bind any who cast one in enchanted ropes.
Fawkes sang once more, Hermione chuckled. "She says that one is perfect, the old coot doesn't know that one."
Amos barely managed to keep a straight face, knowing that Albus had just failed the second test as well as the first, however this test would be conclusive and reveal the result to all in the room beyond any doubt. "Lets get this done shall we." He smiled, and cast the charm to reveal the bond.
A golden light surrounded Fawkes, after a moment a gilt rope of light spread from Fawkes to link with Hermione and the light spread around them both. A second rope emerged, this time red and black, sparks crackling from it, moving quickly and impacting forcefully in Dumbledores chest, knocking him from his chair.
Amos lifted the spell and dropped the shield. "Well I would say that is conclusive, three tests and all of them clearly demonstrate Fawkes is bonded to Miss. Granger and no other."
Albus was picking himself up from the floor. "Was the attack on me really necessary Amos?" He gasped.
"Yes that was unexpected." Amos replied. "Though it did have meaning. Just when did you force a bond on Fawkes Albus? It was broken this last summer, but the rope was the backlash from a bond imposed on a magical creature."
Albus sat down heavily in his chair, but did not reply.
Amelia sighed. "Another charge to add to your growing list Albus, I cannot think of anyone with such a variety of charges, not an achievement I should think you would be proud of. Tonight alone we have forced bonding of a magical creature, imprisonment of the same. Attempted theft of a light Creature and the Familiar of another, as well as attempted corruption of a familiar, which also carries a charge of assault on the bonded witch or wizard."
"Is all that really necessary, Amelia, it was a simple mistake." Albus gasped.
"It most certainly is, and it is not all." Amelia lifted the silencing spell from Umbridge, who looked livid. "Umbridge, you will be facing similar charges of attempted theft, corruption and assault. We shall be discussing the matter further shortly."
"Lord Potter, Lady Ashmole, Lord Black, Miss Granger and Fawkes, my thanks for your co operation and assistance in this matter, you are all free to go, as are you Minerva." Amos bowed and they all turned to the door, Fawkes on Hermione's shoulder.
Half an hour later, Umbridge was released to continue her duties pending trial, both she and Dumbledore had been left in no doubt whatsoever that they were under close scrutiny between now and their trials. Umbridge was furious she had been humiliated in front of the supposed lords, her considerations of earlier resumed, she needed a way to restore her position and take these idiotic charges away. Yet more for her to occupy her mind.
The moment the two Ministry heads of department left his office, Albus was subjected to gales of laughter from the portraits covering the walls.
"You never learn Albus, yet again you have made a fool of yourself in your quest for power and control." A voice bellowed over the laughter.
Albus was furious at the ridicule. "Shut up Hat." He bellowed.
October:
The first meeting in October gathered in the Wizangamot chamber, with just one purpose, selection of the new Chief Warlock. To date not a single delegate knew who had been nominated, just that there had been at least one. They were all aware that this was the second attempt at the process, they also knew that the first had been held up by the Minister, he had admitted it at the second session last month, when he refused to table nominations, so they had restarted the process and taken control of the process into the Wizangamots office. It was the first time in four centuries the actions of the Minister had necessitated that, and as a result they had nominated Madam Longbottom to chair this session in his place.
"Order, Order!" She called. "I call all Lords and Proxy members who wish to participate in this session to take their seats and come to Order."
The delegates fell silent as they took their seats, attendance was almost complete, very few seats were left unoccupied, the sense of anticipation rose as Madam Longbottom struck the gavel twice.
"I declare this first session of October open, and call upon the clerk to announce the business to be considered."
Percy Weasley stood at her side. "This session of the Wizangamot has been called to consider the election and appointment to office of a Chief Warlock. This being the case there is no other business scheduled until after the appointment is filled." He announced.
"Very well, I call on the head of the Wizangamot office to announce nominations." Augusta proclaimed.
The witch stood, a parchment in hand. "I have received three nominations though one of the candidates had already notified me that they did not wish to accept any nomination for the post leaving two. For the first time in our history both are employees of the Ministry, and all the nominees, including the withdrawn candidate, are Witches. First of the remaining candidates is Amelia Bones, who has a number of Lords, Ladies, Proxy Members and Ministry employees who have signed in support. She is of course eligible as a current head of department and is a member of this body as Proxy for her niece."
Augusta noted that Cornelius head shot up at that news and was going to interject, but the Head of the Wizangamot office continued.
"The second nominee is Delores Umbridge, who was nominated by The Minister for Magic and has no other signatures of support. She is eligible, as a Ministry employee, although she has never held a post higher than a Senior Undersecretary, a position she held until recently. She was demoted to her current post in the Ministry in the summer, she is currently on secondment to Hogwarts. Even though she sat in this body due to her previous position, she does not otherwise have a seat on the Wizangamot, nor does her family." The witch resumed her seat.
"Thank you!" Augusta said then announced. "As is tradition I shall ask for speakers on behalf of each candidate. First, as is customary, I shall call for speakers in the reverse order of the announcement. Beginning with the proposer, in this case Cornelius Fudge, I ask for speakers in support of Delores Umbridge."
Cornelius stood, Umbridge was in a seat next to him, looking smug. The Minister spoke for twenty minutes about how, as this was his nomination it was the only one worth supporting, there could and should be no debate that Umbridge should be sworn in immediately. Her experience at the Ministry would be invaluable despite her recent demotion and secondment to Hogwarts. He spoke about how important it was that the Minister and Chief Warlock could work together as they had done, how with his guidance to prevent her excesses, or over enthusiasm as he called it, she was the ideal candidate. He spoke of his concern that a head of department had not sought his support and the loss of one in charge of such a critical a department could have serious repercussions to the Ministry and its smooth operation.
The Wizangamot sat silently throughout the Ministers monologue, as was demanded by protocol, some smirking at him as he continued. Cornelius saw how many were smiling, but took that as approval for what he was saying and that his message was getting through , gaining approval even. When he finally sat, he was convinced he had made his case and his candidate would be certain to win. Certain that others would now enthusiastically speak in support, he decided to stop and allow those others to speak.
Augusta sighed in relief when he finished, but remained neutral as she moved proceedings on. "Thank you Minister, are there any others who would wish to speak on behalf of this candidate?"
There was silence, apart from the fidgeting of Cornelius. When it became obvious no other would speak, he stood once more, but before he could speak again Augusta stopped him.
"You have had your say Minister and as no other wishes to speak, your words shall have to suffice, for the time being."
Reluctantly he sat down, he knew he was not entitled to speak again on this election, and Delores was not allowed to speak in the chamber, unless addressed directly or if she was asked questions. She had no seat, and had only spoken here previously as part of his advisory team. All that was left was to hope he had done enough to sway sufficient votes the way he wanted, despite the lack of obvious support.
"We move on to any wishing to speak in support of the nomination for Lady Bones." Augusta announced. "As is custom those who signed this nomination shall go first, followed by any others who wish to speak. We shall begin with the first signatory, Lord Diggory, then move onto the others in the order in which their name appears on the nomination."
Cornelius and Umbridge glowered at the two heads of department as Amos rose, as if daring them to speak.
All the signatories spoke, each covering different aspects of Amelia's suitability, none taking more than a few minutes to detail their topic. Then about twenty others added their thoughts, it was an hour and a half before all who wished to speak had done so.
Augusta rose again. "Thank you to all who have spoken, now is the opportunity for questions of the candidates. Any question asked will be put to both Candidates, who shall have three minutes each to provide an answer. If you wish to ask a question please indicate in our usual manner. Could the candidates please make their way to the counsel stands, Director Bones to the one on my right, Madam Umbridge to the one on my left, ready to give your answers."
Cornelius looked up, to see most of those who had not spoken were indicating they had questions for the candidates, he watched as both candidates made their way to the stands, and realised that Delores had been sent to the one furthest from him, he could not feed answers to her without being noticed. Umbridge was on her own, he could help her no further, he just hoped she had taken note of the briefing documents he had sent her. His attention returned to the room as the first question was asked, Amelia answered easily, as did Delores, perhaps his worry about her was unfounded.
The questioning continued, there were fewer asked than initially thought from the number of those who had indicated they wished to ask one. As each enquiry was asked, any who felt their query had been covered, withdrew their own indication.. With each question asked, Augusta indicated who should answer first, generally taking turns between them. As the questioning continued and became more specific or technical, it became clear which of the candidates was better suited temperamentally. Umbridge was soon showing her lack of preparation and anger as a result, her frustration clearly exposed. When asked what they would do if they were not elected, Amelia pledged to continue her work within her department, while Delores made it clear she believed that as the Ministers preferred candidate she believed they had no choice, but to elect her. After that her answers became shorter, as did her temper.
Once the last question had been asked and answered Augusta sighed and a sense of anticipation flowed round the room. "Thank you candidates, for answering our questions, I am sure it has helped us understand what you would bring to the post more clearly, if elected." She announced. "Now is the time for us to vote! As is customary this will be done using Ballot papers, once you have cast your vote please return them to the box in front of me."
Percy and the head of the Wizangamot office distributed the ballot parchments, which once completed and folded into paper aeroplanes were sent to a ballot box in front of the dais. Once all ballots had been cast a bell sounded to indicate to all that voting was now closed. Once more Augusta stood. "Thank you all for your efficiency in casting your votes. The Clerk and Head of the Wizangamot office shall conduct the count, if they wish the proposers may enter the tally area to observe, however if they do, they may not interfere with the count in any way."
The two officers collected the box and took it into an area to the side which was shielded from any interference. Cornelius made his way to observe, Amos followed to stand within the area, although the count would be conducted in full view. The two officers could be seen unsealing the box, tipping the ballots out onto the table and begin to sort the ballots, then count them. First they confirmed the number of votes cast, then they sorted them into two piles, it was clear that one candidate had won by a large majority, but the formality of counting each stack of ballots was carried out. At each stage the two noted the results on the formal declaration parchment, both signing it once the process was completed. Having finished the count, they placed the ballots into an envelope that was then sealed, and all four emerged from the warded area, only Fudge showed any emotion, his face red clearly flustered.
Once they had all returned to their places Augusta called the meeting to order again and asked Percy, as clerk to announce the result. Percy stood. "As is customary the tally will be published in the minutes of this meeting, but I can announce the winner is Lady Bones." He handed the formal declaration to Augusta.
"I confirm the Declaration and thank both candidates for stepping forward to stand and for their participation in the process. Congratulations Lady Bones, you are duly elected, and I am delighted to add my signature to this document." She did so then handed the parchment back to Percy, he and the head of the Wizangamot office made copies of the declaration to be posted, the original added to the file with the Ballots.
There were cheers around the room, with the notable exceptions of The Minister and Umbridge, although a few others looked resigned rather than happy at the result. Soon Amelia was brought up to the dias where she was sworn in by Madam Longbottom, then invited to take the seat, which she did. Amelia then made a speech of thanks before asking the Clerk if there was any urgent business to be raised now there was a new Chief Warlock in place. A few small administrative matters were quickly dealt with, before she closed the session.
As the delegates departed, Fudge made his way to where Amelia, Augusta, Percy and the head of the Wizangamot office, were talking, making arrangements for the official hand over and preparing for the press pack, they quieted at his approach.
"Amelia, how dare you?" He blustered. "Was that intended to humiliate me? I shall require a full explanation and apology for daring to stand without gaining my permission first, permission I would not have given. You will report to my office first thing in the morning, at which time I shall decide on what disciplinary measures I shall take."
Amelia snorted. "I think you will find that my nomination and subsequent election are quite above board and perfectly legal, Cornelius, well within both protocol and the rules." Amelia responded calmly. "I look forward to working with the Minister moving forward, as is customary I shall see you in the morning, in the Chief Warlocks office for your official welcome."
"I most certainly will not!" Fudge exclaimed angrily.
"Oh yes you will Cornelius!" Augusta ordered. "Now stop behaving like a petulant child, just because it did not go your way. I suggest you return to your office unless you can face the press for the announcement calmly. If not then you will make a fool of yourself in front of the entire population, not just us."
Suddenly aware of exactly where he was and who would arrive at any moment, he blanched in sudden fear. He then turned on his heel and left quickly, through a door away from where he knew the journalists would emerge to ask questions about what they had observed.
"He will have to go, for the good of us all, that boy will have to go." Augusta muttered, just before the Wizarding press pack rushed up to the podium and began taking pictures and shouting questions.
That evening a veritable Parliament of Owls swooped round the school delivering copies of the Evening Prophet, which carried news of the events at the Wizangamot and the election of Dumbledore's replacement as Chief Warlock. Students were soon headed to the Great Hall for their evening meal, chattering about the news of the humiliating defeat of the unpopular Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor.
Dumbledore himself was absent from the Hall when the students began to arrive, but the rest of the teachers were there, Umbridge looking like she had swallowed a lemon, but trying to maintain a dignified look. Most of the students were in their seats when Susan walked in and her fellows rose to their feet cheering and clapping, to her embarrassment as she walked to her own seat with her friends. Hermione noticed Umbridges face turn red, then purple. The Professor rapidly stood, sending her chair to bang on the floor, but only her colleagues noticed over the noise of the applause. Delores turned on her heel and stormed out of the hall, as the staff joined the students congratulating one of their own for her Aunts success.
The next morning a new Educational Decree had been issued, banning all news publications from student areas, though by the time Breakfast was over, the Heads of House had ensured the decree was rescinded. There was also the unexpected announcement that all Defence classes that day were cancelled, as the teacher would not be available. Not a single student was sorry to hear that news.
Susan walked over to Harry. "I have a feeling that I will not have a quiet time from Umbridge from now on." She sighed.
"Not to worry Susan, I doubt if any of us are flavour of the month with her, anyway. Though from what I am told about what happened yesterday, I think she may find that the support she has gone to find will not be as forthcoming as she thinks." He replied. " Your Aunt says to call her later by the way."
Umbridge stormed up to the Ministers office, having Flooed to the Atrium from the School, while the students finished breakfast. She was going to have Cornelius strengthen her position beyond any doubt in that school, it was unthinkable that she should be undermined by the other staff, and insufferable that she should be by the Students.
Arriving on the floor she walked purposefully down the corridor, passing the doors for the various secretaries, including the one to her old office, which now had a new occupant according to the label on the door. At the end of the corridor was an area for receiving important guests and holding press conferences, she crossed the space quickly and approached the desk of the Ministers Personal Assistant which guarded access to the Ministers office. Reaching the desk she waited to be noticed, by the unusual number of staff scurrying around in the area behind it. She recognised the signs of a hectic start to the day in this office, though not the reason. She had rarely seen this amount of frantic work here and knew well that it meant all involved were far to occupied to worry who was waiting at the desk without an appointment. She knew she that if she went behind the desk though, she would be noticed, but not in the manner she needed, she was no longer authorised so to cross that line would not serve her cause, Umbridge knew she should be patient, she was not in the mood to be patient.
"Hem, Hem!" She coughed.
One of the staff paused and called. "One of us will be with you as soon as we can, please be patient."
Umbridge huffed and was about to respond, but that member of staff had already disappeared. She tried again to attract attention by coughing, but was ignored.
"Excuse me, but I have important business with the Minister." She called.
"Please be patient, we shall attend to you as soon as we can." A slightly annoyed voice called, though she could not see who it was.
Another voice, quieter, but just as anonymous said. "I already told her to be patient, it's the Toad."
Umbridge bristled, but felt her anger rise further as she heard the response. "That's all we need as if we haven't got enough on without her adding to it, well she will have to wait, he isn't in his office anyway, he's dealing with far more important matters."
Umbridge seethed and shouted. "Excuse me, I have vital matters I need to discuss with the Minister. When will he be back?"
The personal assistant came out. "I doubt a junior such as yourself could possibly have much of importance to discuss, and he will be back when he is back. You have no appointment, so sit and wait until you are told if the Minister is available to you. I assume even you can find where to wait without a nurse maid to guide you." She said, then turned and returned to what she and her staff were doing, leaving Umbridge to fume on her own.
She saw a memo fly out and above her head, before it entered one of the offices. A moment later a figure appeared from the door and entered one of the lifts, turning and glaring at her, the figure shook his head as the door closed. She knew that the Minister would not be returning by this route now. That secretary was on his way to divert Fudge to the other access to his office, a route she could no longer access, she would have no choice, but to wait.
The day so far had been disastrous for Fudge, the reports in the mornings press and reports on the radio had been bad enough, even the usually loyal Daily Prophet had questioned his competence. Its reporter had witnessed his behaviour after yesterdays Wizangamot, albeit at a distance, it was enough for them to call his behaviour into doubt. The print media had drawn their own conclusions, simply from his absence from the press conference, not that, that helped him at all. Then he had arrived in his office to a flurry of howlers and letters from the public, each one complaining about him, creating chaos in his office, especially as the howlers burst open.
He had escaped that bedlam when he had gone to his first meeting with the newly elected Chief Warlock, who he was told had already been in her new office over an hour that morning. The meeting was not a good one as far as he was concerned, it was clear she was no Dumbledore, although she was not going to bow to him automatically, just as her predecessor wouldn't. She certainly had no remorse for going behind his back to be nominated, she had been clear that she would not allow him any control over her position. He knew Amelia was much tougher than her predecessor, and with her knowledge of the law and law enforcement, she would not be lenient for political advantage at all. Bribery was certainly out of the question, she would not be corrupted, of course and made it clear that she would carry out her duties without fear or favour.
He knew this was another chip gone in the erosion of his political world, which was going to be so much harder to control now, at the very time he needed it to be easier. He knew he had a political war to win, things were becoming far too complex for his liking. There were just to many factions developing for him to keep them all happy, he had no advisors left who he could trust. Losing Lucius had been a blow, especially financially, he doubted he could foster a similar arrangement with Potter, despite his youth. The boy was far too well advised for that to succeed, at least in the time frame he required. He wondered if he still had the Boy's support, even the small amount he had, he had not so long ago. Perhaps it had been a mistake to allow the boy's guardians to recover their positions, allow them to show young Harry his position in society. Certainly it would have been one less Bludger to control, from the way his, until yesterday, junior was conducting this meeting, he was in need of fewer complications as Minister of Magic.
As he left the Chief Warlocks office after the long, uncomfortable meeting, he had no doubt that she was fully aware of her role, and disconcertingly of the limits of his. No longer would he be unscrutinised, no longer would he have some of the freedoms he had acquired in his role. Once in the corridor, he found young Weasley waiting for him. The moment he saw the young man, he knew that another complication was about to be revealed. Any hope that the new problem would not harm his already fragile position, evaporated with the news that an angry Delores was waiting for him at the front desk of his office. Even so he almost sighed in relief, she might be formidable in many ways, but she was one Bludger he would control. Thanks to her carelessness at Hogwarts, acts she herself had told him, he knew she had dug her own hole. She must know that persuading him to support her in the election was her last chance to show she was worth saving from herself. Having failed utterly by her own actions and words, he held her responsible, at least in part, for the newly increased fragility of his position. Because of her, he now had to deal with the rock solid Amelia, and now Delores had the temerity to turn up at his office angry, when she should be contrite and begging forgiveness. That could not be allowed to continue, he had far bigger worries than those she brought, to consider. Even so he used the second route to his office, avoiding being intercepted by her, allowing him time to control the situation.
It took him ten minutes, after he had returned to his desk, to prepare himself for her to enter the office. Now he had calmed himself sufficiently that he would not simply lash out before she spoke, he summoned her. The moment she arrived through the door, she angrily berated him for the debacle of the day before. Then, without pause described the latest events at the school, demanding that he make her the ultimate power in the school, or she would leave it. When her tirade had finished, he looked her in the eye, all his efforts to calm himself were wasted, he was furious. He had done all he could to secure her position at the moment, he had bigger worries than whatever was going on at Hogwarts, not once had it been relevant to why she was sent there in the first place.
"Enough!" He erupted, shocking Umbridge into sitting, at last, he had never reacted like this to her. "Don't you think I have enough to worry about, without you whining about piffling matters at the school. I don't give a dam if you leave the place, you are the one who would need to agree the end of your contract with the Governors. You resigned your official position at the Ministry, though I expect you might be able to reapply for it, you might regain that menial position, though I understand that matters are working much more smoothly there without you. Even so they might take you back, but I doubt it, so I leave that entirely up to you. I am fighting for my own survival here, don't you realise that, or are you so blinkered by your own problems you can't see the bigger picture. Leave the school or stay, you have had all the help you are getting from me, I can give you no more. Your contract is with the school not me, now get out and let me try to salvage something from the mess of yesterday, which, despite your incomprehensible denials, you helped create. Now if you have nothing useful to present, then please return to your duties, what you do at that school is between you and the headmaster, you are on your own."
Shocked by her beloved Ministers actions, she turned and left, deflated and empty handed, with no idea what she was going to do next. She returned to her house, a place she had not visited since she had arrived at Hogwarts, she spent the rest of the day considering her options. Reapply for the mediocre job she had been demoted to at the Ministry, return to the School without the backing of the current Minister, with only the same power as her colleagues, less than some, or do something else. She contacted her last department head, expecting the ministers' statement to be an exaggeration and that the woman would be keen to welcome her back. That appeared to be a delusion, as the head had literally burst into laughter then once calmed told her in no uncertain terms that she would not be welcome back even if Merlin himself ordered it. Although she had no deadline given to her, she knew she had to decide what she would do before the end of the day. Return to the school, hamstrung and needing to ensure Dumbledore's support or find another job, which would not be easy after the report in the Daily Prophet. She knew she could not be without a position at all, she needed one to rebuild her life, regain the respect and influence she deserved, from where she could gain revenge on those who had humiliated her. She needed a platform to do that from, time to solidify her place and build from there, teaching could be that start, certainly it was better than nothing, she would bide her time, ready to strike when the time was right, hope her chance came sooner rather than later.
31st October.
Harry was, as he did every year on this day, feeling down when he woke on the morning of Halloween, the anniversary of his parent's death was not a day he wished to celebrate. Commemorate perhaps, but not one he saw as a happy event. He did not begrudge others honouring All Hallows Eve as a party in the slightest, he could understand them wanting to enjoy the festival, for others it was a reason to celebrate. He did not begrudge them that in the slightest, but for him, it was not a date on which to feast and make merry. Any other time he would wholeheartedly join in the festivities, it was just this festival which he simply could not bring himself to participate in.
This year he planned to mark the date in his own way, a way he had wanted to do, ever since learning the truth about his parents. He had already spoken with Professor McGonagall, and gained her permission for both he and Ginny to be absent from the feast and the Castle. He had told her what they planned, and she had unhesitatingly approved, before she thanked them for paying her the courtesy of making the request. They all knew that for the couple it was not necessary, but they had both agreed that as any other student would have needed to gain permission from their head of house, they should do so. They respected her, and had clearly shown it, and Minerva appreciated it.
So it was a subdued couple that sat at Breakfast, surrounded by friends from all houses that Tuesday morning. Most of the students in the Hall knew the significance to Harry of this day, and were respectful of him for it. They knew they would be celebrating later, and knew Harry did not begrudge them that, and so they treated him similarly this morning. As was customary on days when traditional feasts fell on class days, the afternoons lessons had been cancelled, meaning they only had lessons this morning, giving them all plenty of time after lunch to prepare for the evening.
The ringing of a spoon tapping on a glass silenced the hubbub of chatter in the hall, drawing the attention of all towards the top table, where the Headmaster had risen to his feet. Once he had the attention of all in the hall, he spoke.
"Good morning and Happy Halloween to you all. As you are aware classes will take place as usual this morning, however after lunch all lessons are, as is customary on such occasions, cancelled." He announced, and a cheer rose amongst the students.
The staff were watching carefully, wondering why he was announcing what was already known.
The moment the cheers had died down, Albus continued. "Yes, yes a happy event I am sure. This does give you time to be prepared for the feast tonight, of course, however in order for this room to be prepared it will be out of bounds to students after Lunch. I must also inform you that it has now been decided that attendance at the feast will be compulsory for all students, there will be no exceptions regardless of reason. All other student activities are cancelled for the evening, and you have this afternoon to ensure any homework is up to date and ready to hand in, so there can be no reason for none attendance. Any who fail to join us, will be punished, however I am sure that will not be necessary. So let us begin the day looking forward to coming together to celebrate this evening."
He sat down to silence, every student in the school knew this was targetted at Harry in particular, as did the staff who looked as shocked as the students. All of them were aware of the significance of the day to Harry, even the first years knew the story and the announcement had brought home to them how he must feel on this day each year. Only Ron seemed oblivious amongst the students, whilst at the staff table only Umbridge looked pleased, a fact noted by many. It was also commented that it was the first time she had looked so happy since she had disappeared for the day after not becoming chief Warlock.
Since she had returned she had been much more subdued, she was yet to issue any more decrees, but her lessons had not changed, they were still less exciting than History of Magic, except in one respect. Her manner of control in the classroom, now she issued punishments much more easily for the slightest reason she could come up with. No one could make sense of it, all were thankful that the Heads of House had to approve any punishments, or all of them would have spent time in detention with her. She had tried to justify punishments by exaggeration, never quite lying about the misdemeanour, but certainly making them seem more than they were. As a result, few of her punishments were upheld, those that were, were never with her supervision. Even so, those who had class with her this morning felt dread at her expression, they knew from experience they would have to be cautious. She was always most vindictive to the students, when she looked as happy and smug as she did following this announcement, and she only looked this happy when she knew either someone she disliked was suffering, or she believed she was going to cause someone to suffer. It didn't take a genius to realise she could now cause both, and that the announcement had probably been her idea in the first place.
The whole school knew that the Feast had never been compulsory, it was attended by most, but not everyone would stay for the whole event and it was not just Harry who didn't attend at all, though he was the only one who never chose to take part. It was the least formal of the feasts held at the school during the year, almost casual, when compared with the others. It was far less courtly, particularly than the ones at either end of the School year, where certain ceremony had to take place, no such events were prescribed for the Halloween feast, it was simply a celebration.
Harry glanced up towards Minerva, who was looking as surprised as everyone else, then shrugging to his friends, he and Ginny stood and left the hall, the other students following.
It was notable that Dumbledore and the four heads of house were absent at lunch, and that Umbridge did not look as pleased with herself as she had at Breakfast. The rumour in the school was that the four heads of house had blocked her from joining them as they went into Dumbledore's office earlier, and had not emerged since. The Defence professor herself had appeared late for her first class that morning and each student in both lessons had been victim of her anger. The lessons due to be taught by the four, had been cancelled, the house ghosts passing on the message to students to use the time to catch up on homework or study. Lunch was held almost in silence, Umbridge snapping angrily at any who dared speak, the rest of the staff ignoring her, then after they had eaten, going to engage any student they wished to in conversation. Most students ate quickly, then left, Harry and Ginny included.
They, along with most members of the alliance went into their common room, some bringing friends with them. Since Jennifer had become a regular visitor when accompanied by Philip, others had asked to bring friends in as well. This had been agreed so long as they were always accompanied by their host, the guests would not be able to access the room unaccompanied in any case. It was also agreed between them that they could not access the suites except in exceptional circumstances.
It was not long after they had settled on the circle of seats near the fire, when a flustered Minerva entered, looked round and spotted them. She hurried over to them, taking a seat next to them. "Well the old fool has insisted his diktat overrules all permissions given, even in the face of the Chair of Governors instructing otherwise. We had to summon him when Albus refused to listen to reason, but even then Albus insisted he was within his rights to overturn the school rules the governors have laid down." She huffed. "In any case the Governors have overruled him, but suggested that the permissions be in writing, which was easy to do, then the Chair countersigned them, as he told Albus he would. From his reaction, Albus thinks it is irrelevant, or that we would not take this that far, so we adjourned to my office to ensure we could get the permissions done without his interference, leaving him to stew. Your permissions are done, of course." She handed them both a Parchment each. "They were the only ones we knew of this year, though others could still ask."
"Thank you Professor." Harry said. "We were intending to keep to our plans in any case. All has been arranged for it, and it was too late to change things. This is my first opportunity to visit them on the anniversary, I don't intend to miss it."
Minerva nodded. "I know Harry, and all the heads fully understand, and were in agreement, including Professor Snape. We shall endeavour to give you as much time as we can without interference, but I suspect once he notices, there might be problems."
Harry nodded. "We thought that might be the case, anyway, however by that time we should have had our private family time at the grave, and the more public commemoration will have begun. That will make it more difficult for him to make a scene there, especially with who will be present. We shall leave via our Floo in about an hour Professor, thank you for your help."
"It is never a problem to ensure the right thing is done, Harry. I wish you well, be careful both of you, know that my, and others, thoughts will be with you." She smiled, then turned and left the room.
An hour later, Hermione, Neville, Draco and Daphne saw the couple off, each knowing how to contact them if need be, they would send a warning if Dumbledore disappeared from the feast. Harry and Ginny walked into their quarters and through the Floo, a moment later stepping out into Mary's living room, where the little Girl greeted them in her usual fashion, hurling herself at them for a hug.
"Hello Mary, I guess you have been waiting for us." Ginny chuckled.
"Yep! I thought you would never get here." She replied.
Harry laughed. "You enjoying your half-term holiday?"
Mary looked thoughtful for a moment. "Kind of! I miss my class, though I do see some of them, but I am enjoying being at home too."
Charles and Liz greeted them, behind them stood Sirius and Bella, Mary became a bit more sombre as she remembered why they had come. "Oh, Sorry Harry, Ginny, I was told you might not like my usual welcome, sorry if I upset you." She said looking sad.
Ginny hugged her again. "Not to worry Mary, it was lovely to get such a happy welcome, it cheered us up. We don't get Half term Holidays, and this morning was a little difficult."
Mary's eyes widened. "Not get Half term? That's weird."
Sirius grinned. "It comes with age Mary, but don't worry you get a longer holiday at Christmas and in the Summer when you go to Hogwarts."
Mary looked amazed, then doubtful. "Are you teasing me Uncle Sirius? You always try to you know."
The adults all laughed as Sirius tried to look shocked and innocent at the same time.
"She has you weighed up you old Dog." Bella laughed. "No Mary, he is not teasing this time, but I am glad you check."
Liz smiled at the couple. "Uncle Sirius is finding it harder and Harder to get things past her these days, if in doubt she checks first, though she enjoys teasing him back too. Paul has arranged some stewards down at the graveyard to make sure you get time at the Grave, and I understand some Aurors will be there too, there will be more later for the public service. I take it by difficult, you mean Dumbledore has been up to mischief again?"
"Yes, he tried to make attendance at the Feast mandatory, announced it this morning at Breakfast." Harry told them. "The four heads of house sorted it though, brought in the Chair of Governors, he signed written permissions for us."
They all shook their heads in disbelief, then Mary asked. "How did the governors chair sign anything? I hope no one was sat on it at the time."
Which returned them all to laughter, before Charlie explained it all to his Daughter, through tears of laughter.
Harry looked at Ginny. "I knew meeting here was a good idea, Mary never fails to lighten the mood." He grinned. "Exactly what we need after this morning."
Half an hour later they had been joined by Narcissa, Andromeda, Ted and Tonks for the walk down to the graveyard, Harry, Ginny and Sirius carrying a wreath of flowers each. They chatted as they made their way down the street, locals recognising who they were stood in respect as they passed.
"Draco was sorry not to come, but he wants to ensure that he can run interference for you back at the school if need be." Narcissa said.
Harry nodded. "I know, he, Neville, Hermione and Daphne have been so supportive, as have the others. I understand Snape was quite surprised when he didn't ask for permission to leave the school."
"Yes, well, I think I need to have a chat with Severus, he is still to much under the influence of Dumbledore, he has divided loyalties." Narcissa observed.
"Perhaps!" Harry agreed. "But, he is making progress, at least he no longer victimises students in class too much any more, he is fairer with points and detentions than he was, so there is an improvement."
"Indeed!" Narcissa said thoughtfully. "I think then, a chat with him is overdue perhaps."
Soon they walked across the Market square, briefly stopping at the statue, before making their way over to the gate of the churchyard, where the Vicar, Paul, greeted them, and they walked over towards the grave. There was already quite a crowd queueing to see the plot, the stewards who were there to martial people saw them approaching and cleared a route through. Harry noticed that the new stone was in place, reflecting his Mothers real name, the masons had done a fantastic job, Paul was going to bless it while they were there. The crowd of people were silent as they passed, Charles, Liz and Mary brought up the rear, but hung back from the family a little once they reached the graves. Harry had given Mary a posy of flowers to lay, so he could introduce her and her parents to his Mum and Dad as his soon to be God Daughter.
The family reached the grave and stood around it, Paul spoke a few words Harry barely heard as he looked at the plot where his parents lay. The ceremony was short, concluding with a prayer of dedication and blessing of the stone, Paul laying his hands on it as he spoke. Concluding the prayer, he walked to Harry and with a squeeze of reassurance on his shoulder, joined Mary and her family, watching, giving their friends space for their own time at the graveside. Harry knelt next to the stone with Ginny, Sirius, emotional, knelt on the other side with Bella. Narcissa, Andromeda knelt at the foot of the grave, with Ted stood behind them, a hand on the two ladies shoulders, Tonks standing with him. Harry, Ginny and Sirius laid the wreaths almost simultaneously with each other, placing them against the stone, each then taking a turn to speak, quietly, before Harry introduced Mary.
He waved her forward. "Mum, Dad, this is Mary and her parents, they live here and Mary will soon be my God Daughter. Mum she is as bright as a button, I am sure you would love her. Dad, she has Sirius weighed up, and wrapped round her little finger, as Bella would tell you. Anyway Mary has some flowers for you too."
Mary knelt and put the posy with the wreaths. "These are for you God Grandma and God Grandpa, I shall come and see you often with Mummy and Daddy, I know that would cheer Harry up, he says I am good at that."
She leant into Harry as she spoke, and he put his arm round her, chuckling a little at what she said, as did the others. "Thank you, Mary." He whispered to her, as she looked up at him with a smile.
Bella renewed the protective charms over the grave as they stood a few minutes later, then they all turned and walked from the grave, allowing others who had come to pay their respects.
Paul had arranged a room at the pub nearest the gate for them to rest and eat in, before the commemoration service began, by which time, Harry knew, the Feast at Hogwarts would have begun. That was when he expected there may be problems, he knew Dumbledore would notice their absence and most likely act to try to retrieve him. He knew precautions were being taken, Remus was finalising arrangements with Amelia, in case she was required and there were already some Aurors around the Churchyard and Market Square.
When they entered the pub, the landlord directed them into the room and gave them menus, Charles had gone to the bar to order drinks for them all, Mary with him to help carry them they said. Harry was distracted from his thoughts when Mary and her father entered, he knew the youngster had something planned, but not what, when she had gone to help her father fetch some drinks. They walked in, Charles carrying a tray, Mary had a big grin on her face, alongside him. They put the tray on a table near the door and Mary brought the drinks, carefully, one by one to each of them. Her father stood in front of the tray and passed her each drink in turn, telling her who it was for, quietly. Harry heard her giggle slightly when her father told her to take Sirius his drink and he hid her from view, carrying his own drink, and a juice for her. Sirius was being distracted by Liz and Bella as she approached. "Your drink, Uncle Sirius." Mary said as she slid a dog bowl with Padfoot written on it, containing beer onto the table in front of him.
"Thank you, Mary." He said without looking, not noticing how everyone was watching, trying not to laugh.
After a moment he turned, saw what she had brought, his eyes widened as everyone burst into laughter, soon joined by himself, then he transformed and lapped up the drink from the Bowl, before transforming back. "Good one Mini Marauder, that was nice." He chuckled.
"Thank you Uncle Padfoot." She grinned cheekily, settling in her seat between her father and Harry.
The staff and students were gathering in the Great Hall, ready for the feast. Dumbledore and Umbridge were seated at the top table observing the scene, distracted occasionally as the rest of the staff greeted them, before taking their own seats. As the flow of Students came in they were not able to individually observe all who arrived, but they were not concerned, once all were seated they would be able to take careful note. Both assumed that none of the staff would have disobeyed the edict delivered at Breakfast and actually had the Chairman of Governors sign any permissions. Albus had reassured Delores that despite the disagreement from the Heads of House, that was to be expected and gave no cause for concern. On the contrary, having allowed them to air their grievances he was positive that their loyalty to him would ensure they would not actually put their threat into action. He also assured her that even if the matter were to be raised at the next Governors meeting, something he doubted would happen, then he could easily sway the other Governors from supporting the Chair. Besides which, they could not discuss it until after the event, so it could not affect it, so any decision contrary to his would have no effect on tonight's feast.
Albus was certain no one would go against him as headmaster when it came down to it. He stood and declared the feast open, then sat down again as the starters appeared in front of them all. It was only now that he took a good look round the hall, trying to see all who were present. He knew Delores was doing the same, they knew of two Ravenclaws who would not be present, they were in the hospital wing. As he finished his first course, he realised that a few were missing from each table, though he had not identified who yet. He needed to ascertain who was missing, he quickly checked the Hufflepuff table, then the Ravenclaw tables, they were the ones easiest to check, they were in front of him. Then he saw Filius leading his Choir to the front and remembered that the Head of Ravenclaw had arranged that they would perform between courses, he had agreed to it a couple of weeks ago. That accounted for the students he had noticed missing from those tables, and he realised others from the other two houses would also be in the Choir so he would wait to check them, his view would be obstructed now in any case.
The Choir sang, the reception from the students was enthusiastic, as the singers returned to their seats. The plates had been cleared and cutlery for the main course had appeared on the tables while the choir had sung, as they settled back at their places the food for the main course appeared, and the usual mild chaos ensued as the students helped themselves from the dishes. This delayed any resumption of seeing if any were missing from the tables, but after a few minutes things calmed as the important task of eating overtook the loading of plates. Dumbledore looked along the Gryffindor table, noting who was there, he was used to identifying each student, and waited for the ones with their backs to him to turn to speak with their neighbour. The main course was almost over when he confirmed for himself who was missing. He turned to Minerva, his eyes betraying his anger.
"Where are Harry and Ginny, Minerva?" He demanded firmly, but quietly.
"They are exactly where they are supposed to be Albus." She replied coolly, continuing to eat.
"Clearly they are not," Albus retorted. "They are absent from the Gryffindor table."
Minerva placed her knife and fork on the plate. "Firstly I find it interesting that they are not the only students absent, with full authority, but they are the only ones you are concerned about, despite all of them having full authority." She observed. "Secondly, not once in all the years I have been here under your headship have you once shown concern for any student absent from this feast. This is not the first time the Earl has chosen not to be present at this event, for wholly understandable reasons, yet it is the first time you have even mentioned it. Finally, while you have shown that you are observant enough to notice they are not here, my answer to your initial question would clearly indicate that the Gryffindor table is not where they are supposed to be at this time. Now, I would like to enjoy my meal and suggest that you do the same." She calmly picked up her utensils, but was unable to resume eating.
"Please stop being obtuse Minerva!" Albus retorted. "I am aware of your objections, but I made it quite clear this morning and our subsequent discussions that all students were to attend this event, no exceptions."
"And as you were told by the Governors, specifically the Chair, you have no authority to enforce that directive. The absent students have written authority, some with medical excuse. I fail to see a problem, beyond one you are trying to create where none exists."
"Hem, hem." The cough came from the other side of Dumbledore.
"Minerva, I must insist on knowing where my ward is." Dumbledore said firmly.
"Ward? What ward? So far as School and Ministry records are concerned, you have no registered ward."
"Hem, hem" The cough came again.
"Enough!" Dumbledore demanded. "This game has gone far enough. You are very well aware that I am the Guardian of Harry Potter, as such I have every right to know where he is, and why he is absent without authorisation, I demand you tell me."
Minerva put her knife and fork down again, as the sound of another cough sounded from across the headmaster, which she ignored, but looked at Albus in her sternest manner. "You are not, and have never been the Guardian of Harry Potter as you well know from the multitude of occasions you have been told that in the last few months. You simply tried to assume that position and manipulate others into believing it. The Earl and his lady have full authorisation to be absent from here this evening, signed by both my self and the Chair of Governors. You do not have the right to interfere in his private business, nor to know what that is or where he is. If you take my advice you will calm down and enjoy the meal and forget all about it, for your own good. Finally, Delores, that cough is getting worse, I advise you to ask Severus for a potion to cure it."
Delores fumed. "Minerva, I believe you need to watch what you say and to whom. Your tone is not one you should use when addressing your superiors. It is clear that Mr. Potter and Miss Weasley have disobeyed the Headmaster, with your encouragement..."
"Delores, if I were you I would keep quiet and mind your own business." Minerva interrupted the woman. "Now in the meantime, as your superior, I instruct you to be silent."
Having not been spoken to in such a manner for a long time, Delores subsided in stunned silence, but it had given Dumbledore a moment to think.
"Very well Minerva, I truly hope when matters are restored to their proper place, you do not come to regret your actions. I am certain that I shall be restored as Guardian to Mr. Potter soon, and once the delusions he has been fed are unravelled, I doubt he will thank you for encouraging them. Now if you will excuse me, I believe I have eaten enough." Dumbledore stood, a little shakily, and turned to leave the hall.
Umbridge also stood. "I think I have lost my appetite as well." She announced, looked round her colleagues, then followed the headmaster.
Within seconds Fawkes had flashed away from Hermione's shoulder, her brief appearance outside the window of the church taken as a firework by many, though Harry and Ginny knew it meant Albus had left the feast at Hogwarts.
The church was full, many villagers, both Magical and Muggle, had chosen to attend, as had many Witches and Wizards from elsewhere who had been visiting the area that day. Paul was leading what he had told Harry had become a Halloween tradition in Godrics Hollow, a service for All Hallows Eve, and to mark the anniversary of the death of the Potters. That night had been a significant one in the Village and to many of the Villagers, it was rare that such an event happened there, and it was remembered by many, as was the couple who had lost their lives. Harry's return to the community was welcomed by all who knew of it, and his support of young Mary and family.
Paul had welcomed them all, particularly Harry, then proceeded to explain how after researching her family, the Earl had discovered the truth of his mother's identity, though he did bot reveal the truth of the circumstances under which it had been forgotten. This was not the time for that story, besides those who needed to already knew it, others could wait. This discovery had led to the gravestone stone being updated, and the discovery that she had a whole family she had not known, he had then welcomed her twin and cousins to the service as well. Although this was a memorial service Paul had deliberately designed it to be a celebration, the music was respectful, but light, the readings suitable and both interspersed with stories of the season, some of which were humorous. They were halfway through the service, when Harry had seen Fawkes appear and disappear, through the window behind the Altar, as had most of the congregation. Paul noticed they were momentarily distracted, looked to Harry who nodded briefly. The Vicar understood, and continued with the service.
At the end of the ceremony the door at the back of the Nave was opened, and the congregation began to leave, stood by the door as was customary, Paul noticed two figures waiting outside, a tall thin man and rather large woman. They were being closely watched by people he knew were there to help with security. Harry led his family to the back of the Church, he thanked Paul.
"I see we have company." He smiled as Paul shook his hand.
Harry took his place next to Paul, Ginny standing next to him once she had thanked the Vicar. They had planned that the family in attendance would line up, so each member of the congregation who wished to, could greet them.
"Harry!" Dumbledore called, then walked towards them. "I am sure you don't wish to cause a sceneā¦"
Albus stopped as he saw the congregation filing towards the door, led by Amelia, and the new head of the DMLE. Behind them were all the other heads of department, then a crowd of people. He had been sure hardly any would be attending this service, and he could easily interject himself and extricate the two students, but the Church must have been full.
Amelia walked towards him. "You are too late for the ceremony Albus, besides which shouldn't you, and your staff member be at the school overseeing the feast?"
"I came to retrieve two students who left the school without my authorisation." He responded.
Amelia raised an eyebrow. "Really, that's careless. I hope you find them, I am glad to note that the Earl and his Lady had proper authorisation to be here, signed by the Chair of Governors in fact, so completely in order. I am sure the Auror department will be able to assist you to find the miscreants Albus, who are they?."
"I am sorry to tell you that I fear my ward has somehow forged his letter of authority." Albus responded. "I must return him and his companion to school immediately."
"You have gained a ward Albus? That is most concerning, you are of course aware that, that is against your bail conditions aren't you? Certainly you had no ward when they were imposed, as Chief Warlock I have a duty to act on this information and ensure your claim is fully investigated." Amelia observed.
Albus puffed himself up. "You know very well that Harry is my ward, regardless of the fiction otherwise. He has been since his parents were killed, now, if you will excuse me I will be returning him to the School." He drew his wand, and before anyone could stop him, he cast a Stupefy towards the open door of the church.
The spell flew arrow straight towards Harry, only to splash harmlessly on a shield charm protecting the doorway.
Albus was disarmed and surrounded by Aurors before he had chance to cast again, though he did in fact feel quite giddy after casting that one. He noticed Umbridge was being held as well, so she could be of no use, then he noticed who was next to the Chief Warlock. "Kingsley, please will you instruct your new subordinates to release me and return my wand, so I can return with my students to the school?"
The new head of the DMLE sighed. "No Albus, I cannot do that. Once again you will be taken into custody, this time on charges of using Magic in front of Muggles, when they were not in danger, also further charges of attempted assault on members of the Wizangamot. Auror take him away, please send a team to modify any memories necessary."
Three Aurora Apparated away with Dumbledore, then they turned to face Umbridge, who was still being held by other Aurors.
"Hem, hem. I suggest you release me and I shall return the students to school for punishment, you have no reason to hold me, I have cast nothing." Umbridge said smugly.
"True." Amelia conceded. "However, I advise that you don't make the same mistake Albus did. Perhaps you should return to Hogwarts immediately, while you are still free to do so. It would be a shame to add to the charges you face, wouldn't it Delores."
Umbridge thought for a moment. "Perhaps you are right." She agreed, the Aurors released her and she Apparated away.
The congregation were still edging past the family, greeting them as they left the church, Harry struggling to hold himself together, overwhelmed with the goodwill all these strangers were expressing towards him.
Once all had gone, he said as much to Paul, who simply responded. "Well they have looked forward to welcoming you home for many years, this was just their first opportunity to do so as a community." He smiled. "They have each told you that they consider you part of this place and hope you will do that as well Harry, in fact they feel that way about you all, as I am sure Mary will reassure you."
Mary grinned from her place in her father's arms, then yawned and tiredly said. "Too right, your vicarage, too right." She giggled as her eyes closed.
