The alarm clock went off, and Chuck woke up with a big smile on his face. "Today's the day!" he said. "Wake up, UD! Today's the day I've been waiting all year for!"
"Your birthday?" UD asked.
"No."
"Last day of school?"
"No."
"Choice-iversary?"
"No! It's finally the Father's Day you are going to meet my dad!" Chuck grinned. His and Norm's parents had divorced when Chuck was three. They got nice birthday and Christmas gifts from him, but Father's Day was one of the few times a year they got to actually see him.
"Uh…" UD said. "That's great."
"Something the matter?" Chuck asked his robot buddy.
"It's just that, well, I've never really got the chance to meet him." UD said.
"Yeah, about that." For the two years UD been on Earth, Chuck had never worked up the courage for him to meet his father. He was afraid that they wouldn't get along at all.
"I know you're nervous, but maybe we will get along. All you have to do is just wait and see." UD told Chuck.
Later, the McFarlanes had gotten their house ready for the visit. Chuck and Norm stood at the front door with their homemade presents. Norm had made a collage scrapbook, while Chuck had a hand-crafted mug.
"Dad is never going to accept your gift." Norm scoffed.
"It's the thought that counts." Ellen said. The doorbell rang. They opened it, and there was Bernard McFarlane, Chuck and Norm's father.
"Hey there, boys!" he said, giving both his sons a hug. "Great to see you!"
"Happy Father's Day!" They handed him their gifts.
"I love these!" Bernard said. "What's on the schedule for this year?"
"The boys are taking you to the annual picnic." Ellen told her ex-husband.
"That sounds like a lot of fun! Chuck, you said in your e-mail you had an additional surprise for me?"
"Uh, yeah. Wait here and I'll go get it." Chuck ran up to his room and shut the door.
"I can't do it!" he said. "If my dad finds out I'm friends with a robot, he'll never wanna see me again!" UD activated Decider Mode for the first time for the day.
"Choice 1: Your dad acts like he's know me for years. Choice 2: I become human to disguise myself. Choice 3: The picnic is cancelled to due it literally raining cats and dogs!" UD said.
"If Dad thinks he's known you for years, he won't wanna spend time with me, and pet rain isn't a good idea. So I'm gonna make you a real boy!" Chuck selected it, and in a flash, a boy around his age stood in the room.
"UD, you're human!" Chuck gasped. UD saw himself in the mirror.
"Wow! I have skin, and fingers, and hair, and everything else humans have!" he said, very excited. He touched himself on the belly. "Hmm. It appears this is some sort of disposable exoskin."
"You okay up there, son?" Bernard asked.
"Coming!" Chuck answered. He took UD's hand, and led him downstairs.
"Dad, this is UD. He's an, uh, exchange student staying with us." he said.
"Nice to meet you. Where are you from?" Bernard asked.
"Gnocchi. It's a very nice…" UD saw Chuck gesturing to not mention he was from another planet. "town in Italy."
"How long have you been staying here?"
"About two years. The exchange program is three years long." UD sweated nervously.
"Well, I'm sure your parents miss you." Bernard went on.
"Yeah, they do!" Chuck said. "In fact, UD wants to spend time at the picnic with us! Right?"
"That's right, Mr. McFarlane." UD said.
"Well, let's go!" Bernard led the boys to his car, and they drove to the park.
When they got there, lots of families were gathered, having a good time. Chuck got out of the car, and saw Misha with her dad.
"I didn't think you'd come this year." she said, when he called out to her. "Nice to see you again, Mr. McFarlane."
"It's a pleasure." Bernard said. He went to sign up for the events. Misha then noticed an unfamiliar person.
"Who's that?" she asked. Chuck explained about the choice he had made earlier. "Why not just show UD as he is?"
"I'm too nervous about Dad finding out UD is a robot." Chuck said.
"UD could never replace your dad." Misha reassured her friend.
"I certainly couldn't." UD added. It was soon time for the games to start.
First was the beanbag toss. Kids would throw beanbags to their dads and back. The referee blew his whistle, and the beanbags flew.
Chuck and Norm easily passed their beanbags to Bernard who tossed them back. They had a good time.
"Come on, UD! Gimme a toss!" Bernard called. UD tossed a beanbag, albeit very hard. It flew out of the park and into the horizon. "That's quite an arm you got."
"Er, thanks!" UD said. Chuck was glad they were staring to get along.
Next was a game of freeze tag. The last father and his children left unfrozen would win. The McFarlane men ran as fast as they could to avoid being tagged. They didn't win, but they still had a good time. As the day went on, Chuck watch as his dad got along with UD.
Before the last event, Chuck spoke to his friends. "This is awesome! My dad really likes you!"
"He sure does." UD said. "Maybe I can even reveal my true identity to him now."
"I wouldn't do that." Misha said. Even Chuck had to agree. But UD didn't listen.
"Mr. McFarlane." he said. "I have a confession to make. I'm not really an exchange student." He grabbed his exoskin.
"Don't!" Chuck shouted, running over. But it was too late. UD took off his exoskin, and revealed his true robotic self.
"WHAT THE HECK?!" Bernard shouted. There was no hiding it now. Chuck had to tell the truth.
"Dad, UD is an alien robot. He has been helping me make choices that can alter reality, and many of them have caused a lot of trouble."
"Wait, so those news reports I saw about yetis invading Cedar Hills, and Hamgeline's kidnapping, were because of you?!" Bernard gasped. Chuck sadly nodded.
"Charles Dylan McFarlane, you are so grounded!" Bernard said. "We're going home right now!" He ushered his sons into the car, and they left.
Once they got home, Bernard argued with his ex-wife. "I can't believe you let our son befriend an interplanetary weapon!"
"He's not bad once you get know him!" Ellen shot back.
"I'm not putting any lives in danger because of that thing!" Bernard turned to Chuck. "Go up to your room, and pack your things. You're moving in with me, and away from that mechanical menace!"
Chuck tried to protest, but he went upstairs, and started packing his stuff. "I knew this would happen." he said sadly. "My dad hates you, and now, he's gonna take me away from Cedar Hills forever! I'll never see you, Mom, Misha, Norm, or anybody again! I've ruined Father's Day!" He flopped onto his bed.
Just then, UD activated Decider Mode again. Chuck knew his next choice could secure their friendship or make it worse.
"Choice 1: Your parents get remarried so we're one big happy family. Choice 2: You put on a presentation that shows your dad I'm not as bad as he says I am. Choice 3: He completely forgets this ever happened."
"While it would be nice to have my parents remarried, my dad would still hate you, and he'd freak out all over again if his memory was wiped, so I'm goin' for Choice 2!" Chuck selected it.
Bernard, Ellen, and Norm sat on the couch, while Chuck stood before them with a screen next to him.
"What's going on?" Bernard asked.
"Father, I know you and UD got off on the wrong foot, but I have another present for you. A slideshow of just what a great friend UD can be." Chuck said. UD projected photos of his and Chuck's friendship onto the screen. At first, Bernard tried to ignore them. But as the show went on, he found some of the pictures quite amusing. He smiled a bit, and soon was starting to laugh.
After the last picture was shown, Chuck looked at his dad. "Did you like it?" he asked hopefully. Bernard stood up and walked over to his younger son.
"Chuck," he said. "I'm sorry about what I said earlier tonight. After seeing all those photos, I now realize that although UD isn't from this planet, he's really quite a guy to be around. And I'm glad you do take responsibility to make up for the chaos you cause."
"Does this mean…?" Chuck asked.
"You can stay in Cedar Hills with your mom and brother." Bernard smiled. "And UD can stay too."
Chuck jumped for joy! His father and robot buddy were now friends. The family finished their Father's Day celebrations by ordering in, watching a movie, and taking a new photo featuring all five members.
As the sun set, Bernard hugged his sons goodbye, and spoke to UD. "Keep looking for Chuck, okay?"
"I will." UD said. As Bernard drove away, UD looked at Chuck. "Sooooo… now that your dad and I are pals, what's the possibility of me meeting your grandparents?"
"One look at you, and they'll be 6 feet under." Chuck said worryingly. UD just stayed quiet.
